Sara Gomez (24) was murdered by her boyfriend Bryan Penner (31), and he then killed himself in jail

A Bend man was arrested on kidnapping and other charges in a raid on his apartment late Wednesday night as police continue to hunt for his missing ex-girlfriend, not heard from since earlier this week.

Police executed a search warrant shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday on the apartment of Bryan Michael Penner, 31, in the 1800 block of Northeast Purcell Boulevard after identifying him as a "person of interest" in the disappearance of Sara Diana Gomez, 24, who last was seen leaving her workplace Monday night.

Police Lt. Clint Burleigh said the raid turned up evidence "believed to be linked to the disappearance of Gomez."

Penner was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and held on second-degree charges of kidnap, theft and criminal mischief, jail records showed. He also faces a dozen contempt of court charges involving violation of an active restraining order involving Gomez, Burleigh said. His bail totaled $110,000.

Further searches for the missing 24-year-old woman are planned in the ongoing investigation, Burleigh said in an updated news release, adding, "We are continuing to ask for the community's help in locating Sara Gomez."

At Thursday's arraignment of Penner, a prosecutor told Circuit Judge Alta Brady evidence shows Gomez may have been the victim of foul play and may be in danger.

Penner's bail was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to be back in court on March 1.

Gomez's friends and family were in the courtroom as Penner appeared by video from the jail.

Lauralyn Searcy told NewsChannel 21 Penner and Gomez were separated and he had a past of domestic violence.

"Everyone that knows Sara and knows Bryan knows that he's violent and abusive," Searcy said tearfully. "We're just praying that he's has her somewhere and that she's not dead yet, because she's like the sweetest person on the planet and she doesn't deserve this, and we've been trying to get her out of this for a really long time."

Court records show Penner was convicted in February 2017 of misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and harassment and given 18 months probation, with several conditions, including not to consume or possess alcoholic beverages or go to any bars, taverns or other establishments were alcohol is served, as well as take anger management treatment.

A concerned friend of Gomez contacted Redmond police on Tuesday to report that she had not returned home for a few days. The information was forwarded to Bend police, Burleigh said.

Family members said she last was seen Monday night leaving work at the north Bend Albertsons, where she works in management, after the Third Street grocery closed for the night.

Sara Gomez, 24 of Bend, has been missing for about a week now, the subject of a police investigation, searches by family and friends -- and lots of prayers.

Since then, her ex-boyfriend, Bryan Penner, has been arrested for violating a restraining order Gomez filed against him last year.
Over the weekend, police released photos of a sea-foam green 2004 Chevy Malibu that they say is involved in the case, as investigators seek public tips on where it was seen between Sunday, Feb. 18 and last Wednesday.

According to Fennel, the car belongs to Penner. Fennell said that Penner and Gomez dated for five years. They met because the two families were friends.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said Penner is believed to be directly involved in Gomez's disappearance.

Gomez search investigators comb Knott Landfill for evidence

Bend and Oregon State Police investigators were at Knott Landfill on Thursday, searching through trash piles for evidence in the more than week-old disappearance of Sara Gomez, 24, of Bend, while her ex-boyfriend made his first court appearance on charges of violating a restraining order.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel also was at the landfill, later telling NewsChannel 21: "We're searching all over this county for Sara, including Knott Landfill, where we were today."

Meanwhile, Bend police issued a plea Thursday for residents in an area east of town to check their property for anything suspicious.

"During the course of this investigation, we have found information that has led detectives to believe there could be evidence related to Sara Gomez's disappearance east of Bend," police Lt. Clint Burleigh said.

Authorities say the ex-boyfriend of an Oregon woman who disappeared last month has died from a suicide attempt at a county jail.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said 31-year-old Bryan Penner died Monday at a Bend hospital. The cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation.

Penner had been taken to a hospital Sunday night after deputies and a jail nurse began life-saving efforts.
Hummel says Penner was the sole suspect in Gomez's disappearance.

Bloody ropes found in home of missing Oregon woman's ex-boyfriend

Authorities say officers found bloody ropes, blood puddles and smears of blood when they searched the apartment of an ex-boyfriend of a missing Oregon woman. The Bend Bulletin reports Bend Police Chief Jim Porter says they are waiting to hear back from the state crime lab on if the blood belongs to Sara Gomez, a Bend woman who was reported missing on Feb. 20.
Porter says information from Penner's cellphone places Penner heading east out of town the night of his arrest, before the signal was lost.

The next time his phone was located, Porter says Penner was near the same spot several hours later, heading west, into town.

Second suspect in Gomez case questioned

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel revealed to NewsChannel 21 on Tuesday that there is a second suspect being questioned in the disappearance and apparent slaying of Sara Gomez.

"We have a suspect, and we are talking to that suspect, and we are chasing down leads, and we are analyzing evidence. And that is where we are," Hummel said.
Hummel said he wants to find out if anyone helped Penner in the murder of Gomez, or helped with disposing the body. We have at least one other suspect out there. If I reveal information that suspect may or may not already know, if I put that(evidence) out there, that is going to put that suspect on notice as to the evidence we already have," Hummel said.

Hummel is not releasing the name or the gender of the suspect but did confirm the suspect was being questioned by investigators.

Good, maybe they can get somewhere in finding her body and also charging someone. It pisses me off so much when these cowards so obviously kill their girlfriends or wives, and then off themselves with the body still missing. We have like 5 different threads on here that have that same scenario.

Body in tarp believed to be missing Bend woman

A body found by a hiker in the desert wilderness near Bend is believed to be that of a woman missing since February.

On Saturday morning, a man came across a human body wrapped in a tarp, while hiking about 21 miles east of Bend, the Deschutes County Sheriff's office said. Detectives have yet to test the remains, but believe it to be the body of Bend woman Sara Gomez.
It might be several weeks before medical examiners can confirm the identity of the body, but Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson, District Attorney John Hummel and Bend Police Chief Jim Porter all believe it to be Gomez.

Deschutes County law enforcement officials confirmed Wednesday the jailhouse death of suspected murderer Bryan Penner was a suicide.

Penner was suspected in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Sara Diana Gomez, whose body was found in May east of Bend. She had been missing since February.

The Deschutes County Major Crimes Team on Wednesday released its formal findings into the death of Penner, 31, who died March 11 at St. Charles Bend. His body had been discovered by a fellow inmate the evening earlier in a communal shower at the Deschutes County jail.

He had wrapped a towel around his neck and tied it to a towel rack about 3 to 4 feet off the ground and slumped to the ground, according to information released Wednesday by Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel.

Jail staffers ran in with a ?cut-down tool? used by corrections employees in suicide attempts. Life-saving measures by deputies, paramedics and hospital staff helped keep Penner alive one more day, Hummel said.

Gomez, 24, was reported missing Feb. 20. Penner, whom she dated for five years, was quickly identified as a suspect.

He was taken into custody for allegedly violating a restraining order she had taken out against him shortly after they?d broken up.

Police discovered blood and bloody ropes while searching Penner?s apartment. They were racing to build a case against him at the time of his death.

In a suicide note left on his bunk and released Wednesday by Hummel, Penner denied involvement in his ex-girlfriend?s disappearance and claimed the two had gotten back together shortly before she went missing.

He wrote of receiving death threats and being scared of what would happen if he was released from jail.

He complained to staff at Deschutes County jail about threats from other inmates and was moved to a unit for inmates with fewer behavioral problems, a sheriff?s spokesman said at the time. He was housed there with 14 other inmates.

?I can?t take this anymore,? Penner wrote in his suicide note. ?The stress of being locked up in this situation where the love of my life is missing and everyone is blaming me for knowing why. Sara, I hope you?re happy ?cause you?ve crushed me once again. I hope you?re OK.?

Penner wrote goodbye to various friends and relatives. He named friends he claims betrayed him, and made arrangements to give away his car. ?Careful with those speakers LOL,? he said.

The note also includes a list of songs Penner wanted played at his funeral, including ?I?m So Proud of You,? by Drake featuring Nicki Minaj, ?I?m So Paid,? by Akon featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, and ?Tha Crossroads,? by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

?Remember the good times we had. All the Beers, Bowls, good jokes and sports,? he wrote to one friend.

With Penner dead, the search for Gomez sputtered. Volunteers and professionals combed a largely unoccupied 80-square-mile region east of Bend, where cellphone data placed Penner around the time Gomez went missing.

Her body was discovered by a hiker May 25 wrapped in a comforter and tarp under a tree near Horse Ridge.

The state medical examiner identified the body as Gomez but has yet to issue formal findings on her cause of death.

But the investigation into Penner?s death is now closed, according to Hummel, who released a statement Wednesday accusing Penner of attempting to ?re-write the final chapter? of Gomez?s life.

?I?ve previously expressed my contempt for Mr. Penner killing Sara,? Hummel said. ?My contempt deepens because in his suicide note he had the gall to claim Sara got back together with him before he killed her. In Sara?s final months of life, she fled an abusive relationship, filed for a restraining order and began a new relationship. Penner could not accept that Sara had moved on with her life and this is why he brutally murdered
