By sunset, Inez Larson was staking out Ala Moana Beach Park for more than an hour, waiting for a man she’s never met to appear near the L&L Hawaiian Barbecue stand. After a few false leads, she and two members of her team paced along the park’s perimeter looking for their target: an adult male who thinks he is meeting a 15-year-old girl in the park for sex.
In reality, the teenager is fiction, the work of a fake social media profile set up by the latest crime-fighting group on Facebook, Hawaii Predator Hunters.
Its goal? To draw out adults and shame them online for seeking sex with children. Fresh off the group’s first Oahu confrontation in Kapolei over the weekend, Larson and her team headed to Ala Moana on Monday night to “expose” the next “suspect” who had taken the HPH bait.
“It’s a beautiful night to catch a pedophile,” Larson tells viewers who had just tuned into the group’s Facebook Live video. (The Civil Beat reporter left the park shortly before the confrontation, but reviewed the post on the group’s Facebook site. )
Minutes later, she and the team confront a homeless man who calls himself “Jerome” on the Facebook feed and confirms he is the person who reached out via text to Hawaii Predator Hunters phony 15-year-old.
“This is a Facebook exposure by Hawaii Predator Hunters,” Larson informs the man.
“I’m not a predator,” he says of the texts, and brushes off any intent to follow through with his text messages. “I was just talking shit to the girl.”
Larson continues videotaping the encounter. “If you go with the cops tonight we’re going to say you went to jail because of us … so you won’t do this to another.”
But there would be no arrest.
A Honolulu Police Department officer who was contacted in the downtown Honolulu park by Larson and the team, gave the crimefighters a quick lesson in criminal law.
Off-camera, the officer, who is not identified, tells them in a conversation that: “There’s a line. You guys have got to watch yourselves on this. I have to have probable cause on this.”
Local police discourage such confrontations. A spokesman for the Hawaii Police Department said they don’t advocate “vigilante justice,” worrying these incidents could turn into dangerous encounters.
Aiming For ‘Exposure And Education’
The encounter on Monday night in Ala Moana is the second citizen-led “sting” inside a week conducted by citizen volunteers affiliated with the Hawaii Predator Hunters Facebook Group, according to Giovanna Arioli, who started the group.
The group was started by Kona-based Arioli, who said she wants to bring a better community awareness of the problem of sexual predators. She says she was sexually abused as a teen.
“It would be the greatest thing if these guys went to prison for what they did,” said Arioli, who launched the Facebook group on Nov. 4, with her son, Kalani Kapule. “But our main goal in this adventure is exposure and education.”
She said the group confronted its first Oahu resident after he came to a Kapolei parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 17. The group said he had been texting its 14-year-old decoy saying he wanted to have sex with her.
She declined to let Civil Beat review any of the texts.
In that encounter, group volunteer Paulo Salas yelled at the man who allegedly came to meet the girl: “You’re trying to have sex with a 14-year-old. You’re done,” according to the video posted on Facebook .
Salas was also present at the Ala Moana Park “exposure,” as the group calls their actions. He says the old Neighborhood Watch method of organizing against crime is useless against today’s criminal who can move undetected online.
“I just want to make the predators more scared,” said Salas.
Citizen-led groups that conduct their own “stings” of suspected sexual predators is not a new phenomenon on the mainland or in other countries. Arioli believes it is new in Hawaii.
Such tactics give pause to law enforcement agencies on Oahu and the Big Island.
“The group is not affiliated with the Honolulu Police Department, and the department discourages private citizens from pretending to be juveniles in order to communicate with and confront others,” HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu wrote in an email. “Anyone with information on suspicious or illegal activity should contact HPD.”

But Arioli, who works from the Big Island for a bail bond company in Tennessee, says shaming through a public and recorded confrontation is the point.
“It is not vigilante,” she said. “If this was vigilante, these predators would be killed. I’m sorry.”
A background check by Civil Beat found that Salas pleaded guilty to a felony forgery charge in 2011 in Hawaii and was placed on probation, which he acknowledged to a reporter. Neither Arioli or Larson have criminal records, according to available records.
Will Confrontations Place People At Risk?
Arioli said she started the Facebook site to help police, not get in their way, because officers can’t be everywhere at once. She enlists the help of adult volunteers who pose as underage girls.
Once an adult approaches the “decoy” social media account set up by Arioli’s group, group members notify the contact via text that the girl they are interacting with is 14 or 15 years old.
If the suspected predator continues contact and wants to meet the decoy, Arioli said volunteers with the group, who call themselves “exposers,” confront the adult and then videotape the encounter as a warning to the community.
Arioli said she has done at least five “stings” on the Big Island and that two of the people they confronted have been referred to the Hawaii County Prosecuting Attorney‘s office. She declined to offer more details about the cases and any videos were not available on the group’s Facebook page.
Civil Beat could not reach prosecutors in Hawaii County on Tuesday to find out if that office was aware of the group.
But are citizen stings effective?
Not according to law enforcement elsewhere who say the only case that can stand up in court is one put forward by the police. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio announced last August that citizen stings have absolutely “zero impact” because only police officers can pose as underage children for the case to go to court.
Marcus Landsberg, a criminal defense attorney in Honolulu, said these types of video-recorded confrontations that are posted online, often derided as “justice porn,” will inevitably lead to someone getting physically harmed.
“This whole thing is headed for a fight and the police are going to be the ones to shake it out,” Landsberg said. “I think they’re inviting violence. It’s very easy to predict that one of these confrontations is going to end in violence.”

But Arioli said her group takes safety precautions and believe it is preventing a greater risk to the community.

Magistrates in Truro heard that it followed a post on Facebook that resulted in her sister getting bullied.
Nichols, aged 20, pleaded guilty to four charges of assault by beating and asked for two further incidents, of assault not by beating, to be taken into consideration.
Prosecutor Anita Kennett said: "Gemma took it upon herself to have some of vigilante period of meting out justice, perhaps, for her sister."
On May 21 she assaulted two of the youths in a car park in Porthleven, punching one of them on the forehead causing swelling. The other youth she sat on.
Then, in the early hours of June 19, Nichols was in Coinagehall Street, Helston, saw two more of her victims in the street after they were asked to leave a licensed premise. One she punched in the nose, causing it to bleed, striking the other in the face.
Her two final victims were not beaten, but she shouted at them and was "in their face," according to Mrs Kennett.
Nichols had previous convictions, including assault.
Probation officer Max Holgate said Nichols had been co-operative throughout their interview, but struggled to understand some things.
She was not working and received disability benefit for anxiety and depression, having been the victim of domestic violence in a previous relationship.
"She says she feels sad and that she could have handled it in a different way. She is protective to her younger sister getting bullied," said Mr Holgate.
Deborah Von Kohler, defending Nichols, said: "I would suggest [it was] not so much vigilante, but trying to protect her sister but going about it the wrong way. She is only 20 years old but is formally diagnosed with depression, which I suggest is quite tragic when you're so young."
Magistrates ordered Nichols to pay ?50 compensation to two of her victims that were injured, along with ?85 prosecution and ?85 surcharge.
The court was given an address for her in Trengrouse Way, although the 7pm to 7am, seven days a week curfew with electronic tagging will be linked to her partner's house in Beacon Parc where she now lives.
Nichols was also given a restraining order banning her from the grounds and buildings of Helston Community College for 12 months.
Finally, she must take part in a 12-month community penalty, during which she will take part in 25 days of rehabilitation programmes including ten sessions of the Beyond Violence programme aimed specifically at women and another involving victim awareness.

A vigilante who invaded a house with four relatives to confront a man they were accusing of abusing a child, has been jailed.
Terrence Limerick 34, was described by a judge as not one of the "main agitators" of the events in Tennant Creek but he spend time behind bars.
The group went to a house in the Northern Territory town on May 6 this year and began yelling at a man inside to come out and to fight.
The women were "upset and angry" and told Limerick "of a version of events which occurred the night before involving a family member", Acting Justice Dean Mildren said in sentencing remarks in the Supreme Court in Alice Springs.
The group of women were calling him a rapist and a pedophile.
When he wouldn't come out they broke the gate off its hinges, Limerick grabbed an axe on the porch and one of the women kicked open the front door.
The man was inside and pulled his son behind him to protect him.
One of the women grabbed the axe, raised it above her head with both hands and advanced towards the man and his son, Justice Mildren said.
The man then grabbed a 30cm hunting knife and held it in front of him for the protection of the child and himself.
The group of women picked up property belonging to the man, including glass cups, a mirror and tank with a lizard inside and began throwing it at him until he said he would call the police.
The women were the main agitators and Limerick had diffused what could have been an ugly situation when he urged all of the women to leave.
However the offences were serious, said the judge, and Limerick had a criminal record including being jailed for assault and committing an act of gross indecency with a child under 16.
The attack came only a couple of months after Tennant Creek received national notoriety over the rape of a two-year-old in February, for which a 25-year-old man has been charged.
Limerick pleaded guilty to unlawful entry to a house with intent to commit an offence while armed and aggravated assault.
"Fortunately, no one suffered any serious injuries as a result of your behaviour," Justice Mildren said.
"You had no business to go into his home and to demand an explanation ... the matter was in the hands of the police."
He was sentenced to two years and seven months but could be out by September due to a 16-month non-parole period and the fact he has been in jail since the day of the home invasion.

It persists even though communities can typically identify the assailants. Brenna Powell, a lecturer at Stanford Law School who has researched the Northern Ireland peace process, recalls meeting a teenaged boy who had been shot so many times with a nail gun that his hands were mangled. Every time he got attacked, Powell said, he knew exactly who was carrying it out. But the beatings didn’t stop, because he had nowhere else to go.
Powell cited high rates of suicide and drug abuse associated with the trauma of the conflict. “Does this kind of violence disappear in the absence of progress on all those other fronts? I don’t think so.”

Mauricio Vilanova is no typical small-town mayor. The 60-year-old patrols the streets of El Salvador's San Jose Guayabal in a 4x4 vehicle wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an automatic rifle.
Vilanova's civilian patrols are one of the reasons this town is one of the few in El Salvador not haunted by the gangs which, in this country and elsewhere in Central America, are cited by migrants as a major reason for trying to flee to the United States.
"Carrying a weapon doesn't make me feel more of a man. I do this out of love for my town," says Vilanova, mayor for 18 years in the community of 13,000 people covering 45 square kilometers (17 square miles).
Trouble is never far away, though, as San Jose Guayabal lies alongside some tough suburbs of the capital San Salvador.
Here, to Vilanova's great delight, youngsters play basketball when night falls.
"We feel free. The children can play," Carmen Garcia, a 48-year-old grandmother, tells AFP.
Ricardo Reyes, 38, an athletics club coach, adds: "Here, I've never had problems with gangs."
The mayor remains on red alert once the sun sets, ready at any moment to dash off to get his Beretta handgun and Galil SAR assault rifle, both of which are kept under lock and key in his office.
Then he heads off to see what's happening, much to the chagrin of his wife and 21-year-old daughter.

Other than unexpected call-outs, Vilanova also performs a regular patrol alongside a chauffeur and bodyguard, both also armed.
The mayor has been targeted by gangs and despite never having been attacked, he is classified as an "endangered person" by the government.
Vilanova is undeterred, though. "It's difficult to get out of it. I'd have to leave the country," he says.
Things weren't always calm in San Jose Guayabal and could re-escalate at any moment. Gang members turn up in the town regularly and paint their symbols.
If the police pick them up, Vilanova treats the gang members to a sermon and then makes them paint over their graffiti.
Gang activity in the town began in 2006 when La Barrio 18 -- one of the most dangerous criminal groups in the country alongside MS-13 -- took over two neighborhoods.
Deploring the lack of security forces, Vilanova, whose father was a champion shooter and gave him his first gun in adolescence, decided to start patrolling alongside them.
"It took us just two years to basically solve the gang problem," he said.
It didn't last, though, and around 2012 "Guayabal flared up. It wasn't two neighborhoods this time but six out of nine cantons."
Both MS-13 and La Barrio 18 took advantage of a truce with the government to expand their territories.
- Murder rate plummets -
Racketeering, kidnappings and murders were back.
A tearful 34-year-old woman who doesn't wish to give her name out of fear of reprisals says her 21 and 22-year-old nephews disappeared.
"They took them away from me. I've heard nothing of them since."
She received threats just for informing authorities of their disappearance and searching for the nephews she describes as "very honest and well-mannered boys."
Vilanova decided to revive his patrols, but as the law prevented civilians from doing so alongside security forces, he was joined on his rounds by town hall officials.
He proudly points out that the number of murders in his community has plummeted from 18 a year when he started patrolling to none in 2018. And this in a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world: 45.5 per 100,000 citizens in 2017.
He may not be allowed to patrol with security forces but Vilanova does help them.
"The mayor provides us with a vehicle and a chauffeur so we can be more effective," said Antonio Carbajal, 35, a policeman on patrol with three soldiers.
He is one of only eight policemen at the local station. They are fed by the local town council, which also pays them a monthly subsidy of around $1,000 out of its $40,000 annual security budget.
On their route they pass by some peasants carrying bales on their heads.
Suddenly the vehicle stops and the balaclava-wearing soldiers jump down from the back, M-16s in hand.
They surround an adolescent and check his bag, his phone and lift up his T-shirt.
They find nothing; no weapons, drugs or even gang tattoos, so they let him go.
- 'We don't hit' -
The mayor cannot perform such stop-and-search checks so his own team limit themselves to stopping suspects and calling the police.
"We don't violate any rights. We don't hit" suspects, says Vilanova, who claims to have only ever fired his gun "in the air or into the ground" as a warning.
Even so, not everyone is onboard with Vilanova's brand of vigilantism.
"It's the Wild West," says Benjamin Cuellar, from the El Salvador independent monitoring group (GMIES), a rights organization.
"When you have cockroaches at home, you spray their corner and four or five die. The others leave but then they come back."

Vilanova has installed security cameras and built up a network of about 300 informants but he is also investing in preventative measures such as sport and education to try to starve the gangs of new recruits.
"If we identify a youth at risk... we appoint a mentor to accompany him," said Vilanova.
Although he chooses to play the role of vigilante, Vilanova is against allowing civilians to carry weapons.
And he's prepared to venture beyond his own town's borders to help out neighboring communities, such as El Proyecto in San Martin.

Kevin Gammond, 56, of Ley Walk, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday) for attempting to contact a child to engage in sexual activity.
Over a period of 14 months, he communicated with ‘Faye’, who he thought was a teenage girl, and sent her pictures of his genitalia and made arrangements to meet her.
Judge Philip Grey said: “You were highly sexually attracted to what you thought was a 14-year-old girl.”

He arranged to meet her in Basingstoke and looked up train tickets, but pulled out as he could not afford it.
Gammond also asked for pictures of her in a bikini or swimwear or of her breasts.
He said he knew she was 14, but it did not bother him so long as she engaged in sexual activity with him.
He asked her if she had a boyfriend, and if she considered him to be her boyfriend.
Judge Grey said if he had not been caught by the vigilante trap, Gammond “could have found a real young girl for perverted intentions”.
Gammond was arrested in December 2016 after the vigilantes contacted police, and in an interview he gave a full account of talking to ‘Faye’ and admitted he knew she was 14.
He has a previous conviction for harassment in 2012, after meeting a 17-year-old girl through a drop-in centre.
She was sent a letter with explicit sexual details written by Gammond and he also slapped her bottom.
This caused the victim to become alarmed and distressed and Gammond was cautioned.
He is the sole carer for his partner, who suffers from speech problems and dyslexia, and he himself has suffered from epilepsy since he was a boy.
Mitigating, Angela Kerner said: “He needs help.”
He has helped teach his partner, who was in foster care until the age of 25, how to cook and how to do maths.
Having previously pleaded guilty, Gammond was sentenced to 12 months in prison and will serve at least six months.
He will be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and also subject to a sexual harm order.

Man Accused of Assault but is playing the vigilante card
A man allegedly involved in breaking into another man’s apartment and assaulting him in what the Crown referred to as an act of "vigilante justice" has been denied bail.
"The behaviour here is very frightening and concerning," Judge Robert Heinrichs told the Brandon provincial court on Monday. "This would be the kind of case where the court might even consider denying bail on the tertiary ground as well … This is the kind of thing that the community and people that live in the community might be extremely concerned about."
Chris Hapa, 31, is facing multiple charges including break and enter as well as commit robbery with violence.
None of the charges have been proven in court and Hapa is presumed innocent.
On Sunday, police received a 911 call from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend appeared to be in distress while she was on the phone with him, Crown attorney Yaso Mathu said, and was yelling for her to call the police.
Officers arrived to his residence in the 3500 block of Willowdale Crescent and could hear a disturbance inside the apartment, including a man yelling, "Help me, help me."
Police kicked the door open after knocking and found the victim being held in a choke hold by one of the three suspects in the living room, Mathu said.
The victim told police that the two men and one woman forced entry into the apartment by busting open the door.
One of the men immediately grabbed him, slammed him to the ground and put him into a chokehold, Mathu said. They continued to choke him and hold him to the ground while demanding to know "where the cellphone and the cash was hidden."
Two of the suspects searched the apartment but only found some marijuana, which they pocketed.
The victim complained of pain in his solar plexus and had some abrasions on his face, including a bloody mouth.
There was also video surveillance set up in the victim’s living room and the entire offence was captured in it’s totality, Mathu added.
Hapa’s co-accused told police they had all gone to the apartment to try and get his cousin’s phone back as well as some money the victim had allegedly stolen.
"This would imply some sort of vigilante justice," Mathu said.
The entire event, including the assault, also took place in front of the victim’s four-year-old son.
"This was a very serious crime that was committed in front of a child," Mathu said. "Their interest in getting revenge … took precedence over common sense that day."
Hapa was also already out on bail in relation to pending charges from another incident in July, during which Hapa allegedly broke two windows of an acquaintance’s home and climbed into the basement while intoxicated.
He also allegedly has failed to attend court, Mathu said.
"Mr. Hapa has shown he has no intention in abiding by court-ordered conditions … It doesn’t appear that he can be managed in the community," Mathu said.
Defence lawyer Bob Harrison reminded the court there were three suspects there, adding that Hapa insisted he "never touched" the victim.
The bail plan put forward to the court was a strong one, Harrison added, with Hapa agreeing to follow strict conditions and had cash to put up for security.
Heinrichs was skeptical any bail plan would be sufficient in addressing concerns and denied Hapa’s bail application.
Hapa is scheduled to appear in court again next week.

A quick-thinking South Carolina woman shot and killed an inmate who broke into her house after escaping from a county jail, police said.
The escapee, Bruce McLaughlin Jr., 30, died from a gunshot wound to the head early Tuesday when the unidentified homeowner blasted him, Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said at a press conference Tuesday.
After busting into the woman’s home, McLaughlin Jr. — still wearing his orange jail jumpsuit — grabbed a knife-sharpening tool from the kitchen and headed toward the woman’s bedroom around 3 a.m., police said.
“This was a big guy,” Clark said. “If she hadn’t had a weapon, there’s no telling what would have happened.”
Clark praised the woman for her actions.
“I gave her a big hug. I told her how proud I was of her,” he said, noting that the woman was home alone and had a concealed weapons permit.
“She came out on the good on this end and the other guy, the bad guy, didn’t,” Clark said.
McLaughlin Jr., along with another inmate, Timothy Dill, beat up two guards during the premeditated escape plan, Clark said.
The inmates also stole the guards’ keys, locked them in a room and broke down a door, authorities said.
Dill was recaptured by police around the same time as his partner in crime was shot.
He was hit with a slew of new charges, including escape, two counts of kidnapping, first-degree assault and battery. Dill was awaiting trial on a charge of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
As for McLaughlin Jr., he was awaiting trial on first-degree burglary and grand larceny charges, records show.

Vigilantes armed with baseball bats have taken matters into their own hands to stop children running amok in Maddington streets.
Frustrated residents last night targeted a home where they believe some of the children live and say they'll keep doing it until the kids stop terrorising their suburb.
The vigilante group smashed windows at the property and swung baseball bats at children.
The late night attack following growing concerns about groups of youths, some as young as nine, who have been blamed for breaking into cars and homes, vandalising public property and assaulting residents.
Seven News reported locals were too scared to leave their homes, catch public transport, or go to Maddington Village shopping centre as children as young as nine roam the streets.
A woman involved in the vigilante response said she was sick of the children who live at the house terrorising the suburb and wanted them to feel frightened for a change.
Seven News spoke to some of the boys being being targeted by the vigilantes, including one who stood in a doorway holding a machete.
They said they were worried about further attacks, which locals say are likely unless police step in.
WA Police have thrown extra resources to fight against juvenile crime in the area and yesterday deployed mounted patrols around the Maddington Village shops on Westfield Avenue.
They have warned residents against taking the law into their own hands and advised them to continue to report incidents as they occurred.
A tentative peace has been restored this evening, after many of the children that have been roaming the streets were today issued move on notices.
But those orders only last for 24 hours and residents are concerned about what happens once they expire.

A reported vigilante attack in Ireland
Garda? are probing whether the vigilante gang who attacked security guards at a repossessed Co Roscommon farmhouse at the weekend had been given the go-ahead by local criminals.
Garda? believe republican elements "exploited" the anger surrounding the eviction of the local family and became involved in Sunday’s violence.
Garda? briefly visited the house in Falsk, in Strokestown, Co Roscommon, last night as a small group gathered outside, but no incidents were reported and local officers left a short time later.
The group have since left, but are believed to return to the site later today.
Bales of hay that the vigilantes used to block a bridge near the farmhouse were moved to the side of the road to allow traffic to pass through.
The group gathered as more details emerged about the shocking attack that occurred at the house in the early hours of Sunday morning, which saw a gang of at least 20 men armed with baseball bats attack eight security guards.
The McGann family have tasked a spokesperson to speak to the media on their behalf.
According to Donal Hanley, he said they have been "traumatised" by the recent events.
The vigilante raid has been condemned by both Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan.
It is now being probed if the vigilantes’ involvement in the attack was “sanctioned” by a number of crime groups operating in the area who are heavily involved in cattle smuggling.
“Dissidents from the North and Dublin are suspected of involvement. They reached a deal with local crime groups allowing for them to carry out the attacks on their turf,” one source said.
The ‘local’ criminals include a CAB target who is originally from Sligo, as well as a notorious crime family operating in north Roscommon.
Anti-eviction groups and local men are also believed to have been involved in the storming of the property, but not all of those involved have dissident links.
The attack had been well planned and prepared with the gang blocking off the roads leading to the house, and then making their escape across the fields to a location where getaway vehicles were parked.
It is believed that the men gathered on Saturday evening before heading to the Falsk property.
Three of the eight security workers were hospitalised after the attack – all have since been discharged.
All men reported receiving blows to the head, arms and legs. They were posted at the property by the bank which had repossessed it.
Garda? are also probing the initial eviction at the same property last Tuesday where two minor assaults were reported.
The farmer whose home was at the centre of the repossession is not suspected of having any involvement in the weekend’s violence.
A local man said: “They’re asking to be left alone and in peace. They’re seriously traumatised by what happened.
“This family have been thrust into the media spotlight – they’re not used to this. When I say they’re seriously traumatised, they’re very nearly at breaking point.
“They are totally devastated by everything that has happened. The house has been lying here idle and they want to come back to their own home. Their plan is to get back to normal.
“The family don’t condone violence in any shape or manner whatsoever,” Mr Hanley said.
A large presence of local supporters stood outside the house last night to show their solidarity and to convey their criticism about how they feel the media reported on the family’s situation.
“The right thing you can do is f*** off back to Dublin,” one man told the Irish Independent. “I’m here as an independent person representing the people of Ireland. The likes of your reporting is atrocious and you should be ashamed to come here tonight.”

A former garda and a 60-year-old man reported being assaulted during the eviction.
A garda spokesman was unable to say if Commissioner Drew Harris had been briefed about the vigilante attack.
Meanwhile Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan yesterday condemned the vicious attack on the security guards.
Mr Flanagan warned that vigilantism “cannot and will not be tolerated in this State”.
He added: “While I do not wish to comment on any individual case, I wish to stress that violence is never justified.”
He said garda? are the sole legitimate guardians of the peace in this State. If anyone has a complaint about Garda actions “they can and should go to the independent complaints body – GSOC”, he said.
“I am deeply disturbed by the thinly veiled references to vigilantism that have been made in recent days in social media and elsewhere,” he added.
“This is a very dangerous road to go down and vigilantism cannot and will not be tolerated in this State.
“While very conscious that the full facts of this particular case are not in the public domain, it is clearly deeply distressing to see a family lose their home, particularly at this time of year.”
Mr Varadkar said: “I don’t think anybody likes to see somebody being evicted or losing their property, especially in the run up to Christmas.
“But if it was done on the basis of a court order I can only assume the judge heard all sides of the story and made the decision that he did.”

Hundreds of Ogango residents in Kolwa yesterday protested the killing of a motorcycle rider in the area by a vigilante group.
They also decried spiraling insecurity in the area.
Willis Obura Awinda alias chief was stabbed to death by members of the vigilante group and the body burnt.
No one has been arrested in connection with the killing, which sparked massive protest in the area.
Area MCA George Omondi, who led the protest, called for immediate arrest of the killers.
Omondi complained that Ogango residents were being regularly targeted by the vigilante in the name of fighting crime, noting they were terrorising innocent wananchi and beating people at night.
The ‘armed vigilantes’ also attacked three boda boda riders as colleagues watched in disbelief on Saturday mid-day near Makaa estate.
They stabbed one of the riders and beat the others insensate.
The MCA and Kisumu human rights groups decried the activities of the vigilante group.
Omondi asked the police to investigate the incidents.
In the last two weeks, a watchman at Kibuye market was found murdered in cold blood and another victim was also stabbed. A retired teacher was attacked, raped and murdered in cold blood in Rabuor market.
"If the gangs can strike and stab people in broad day light, then who is safe here?" posed Omondi.
The MCA termed the killing of Obura as “bizarre and painful to all residents”.
Yesterday, Kisumu East OCPD Ancent Kiloki and East Assistant Commissioner Josephine Ouko held a baraza in the area even as the police arrested one of the vigilantes.
Ouko also announced that a team of investigators and regular beat patrol police will stay put in the area to restore calm.
Kiloki also reassured the residents increased security throughout the Christmas and New Year festivities.

A Will County judge will consider whether to suppress evidence in a case where three men allegedly tortured a man for information that led to the arrest of a suspected armed robber.
Jeffrey Tomczak, attorney for Lavon K. Young 22, the alleged armed robber, told Will County judge Dave Carlson on Tuesday that he was dealing with a “unique case” of “vigilante action” by three men who allegedly tortured a man for information that led to Young’s arrest.
Young was allegedly one of three armed robbers who raided the home of Andres Alonso, 28, on July 10, 2017, in the 800 block of North Hickory Street in Joliet, according to court records.
The robbers allegedly stole firearms, including an AK-47, jewelry and cash.
Alonso, along with his cohorts, Sergio Flores, 31, and Marlon Crosby, 26, then allegedly abducted Andres Ochoa, 22, to obtain information on the robbers, which then led them Young, who was identified in a six person line-up by either Alonso or his girlfriend, according to court records.
Alonso, Flores and Crosby have been charged with kidnapping and beating Ochoa, who denied he was one of the robbers.
Tomczak argued that the three men obtained information from Ochoa through torture, as they lured Ochoa to their car under the guise of him owing Alonso a “drug debt.” Ochoa was then allegedly beaten and bound with duct tape.
Tomczak argued that once Ochoa was in the car, the men threatened to stab him with his keys, starve and dehydrate him, and drill holes in his arms.
When Joliet police executed a search warrant at Young’s home, Tomczak claimed it was based on information derived from the men’s alleged torture of Ochoa.
“That evidence is tainted, that evidence is coerced and that evidence is unreliable,” Tomczak said.
A Joliet police detective said in grand jury testimony that none of the victims’ belongings were found at the home that was searched.
Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Slazyk said Young was identified as one of the robbers seen on Alonso’s home video surveillance of the incident. He said one of the suspects in the video had tattoos that matched Young’s. Ochoa had also identified Young as one of the robbers, he said.
Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email that Young has been the only suspect arrested in connection with the robbery. He said a detective formed his own case against Young.

Now a vigilante group has been accused for making false allegations on an Innocent person
A man who was falsely accused of being a paedophile has opened up about how the online witch hunt against him destroyed his life as he lost his job, and friends.
Trolls threatened to attack Paul Farhad's girlfriend and even rape his cat after the 42-year-old was accused of 'grooming' youngsters.
Mr Farhad from Eastleigh was the victim of a false allegation which was viewed by thousands of people over Facebook. His home was spray painted and a brick was thrown through his window - despite him being innocent.
The vicious rumour was started by self-styled paedophile hunter Stephen Dure.
Dure apparently hit out in retaliation to a remark Paul posted online about the paedophile hunter's sister.
Mr Farhad told Sun Online: 'I was furious, I couldn't comprehend it.
'He kept all the people on there who were making it worse.
'I saw some of the comments and people [colleagues] said 'I wondered why he was always quiet' - I was just getting on with my job.
My girlfriend was really scared, someone said they were going to throw acid in her face. They were saying 'let's kills his cat', they had pictures of my cat, saying 'let's rape his cat'.
'I thought 'you're talking about raping my cat on a site on people grooming children, you're talking like a rapist yourself'.'
Dure was jailed for 15 weeks by District Judge Lorraine Morgan in September for the false accusations.
Self-styled vigilante Stephen Dure wrongly claimed on the social media site Paul Farhad was a 'violent psychopath' who 'grooms teenagers'.
Dure, 34, runs TRAP, an online group which uses sting operations to catch alleged paedophiles trying to meet up with underage children - and sometimes posed as kids on the internet in a bid to catch the sex offenders.
His Facebook page has around 230,000 followers and videos showing him confronting sex offenders have been watched millions of times.
A court heard Dure's post spuriously accusing Mr Farhad, 42, of being a paedophile had been viewed by 111,000 people.
Mr Farhad said the inaccurate post, which also claimed he was a 'massive danger' to society, caused him to lose his job and as a result he lost earnings.
Southampton Magistrates' Court, in Hampshire, also heard that after the outrageous claim he was threatened in the street, a brick was thrown through his window and paint was sprayed on his door.
Mr Farhad said he has lost friends of more than 20 years as his life fell apart before his eyes.
He added: 'You can't accuse someone unless you have proof of something like this.
''He had no intention of pleading guilty. He thought he was untouchable.'
This is why I hate those fb groups. Plus every single person running them looks like they should be investigated for the very crimes they accuse others of committing.
