    Now this

Ricardo Flores’ goal was to study hard, become a lawyer and earn enough so that his parents could return from the United States — the destination of multitudes from this impoverished corner of south-central Mexico.

“Ricardo always said that once he was working, he was going to tell my mom to come back, because he missed her so much,” recalled his younger brother, Jose Guadalupe Flores, 16.

That dream came to a violent end one afternoon last month after rumors began circulating on social media and the WhatsApp messaging service that a pair of robachicos, or child robbers, were on the prowl.

An enraged mob attacked Flores, 21, and his uncle, Alberto Flores Morales, 56, savagely beating them before dousing them with gasoline and burning them alive on the street outside the police station here. The pair had been mistakenly suspected of child abduction, authorities said.

“It was like a great spell had overtaken the people,” said Lidia Palacios, a handicrafts shopkeeper who witnessed the linchamiento, or lynching, as such mob killings are known in Mexico. “They were yelling, ‘Kill them! Kill them!’”

The barbaric episode — reminiscent of mob killings in India fueled by viral messages — illustrates how in an era of proliferating smartphone use, rumors looped on social media and messaging platforms like WhatsApp can generate hysteria and vigilante justice.

Mob attacks are nothing new in Mexico, where rampant crime, ineffective policing and a pervasive sense that lawbreakers go unpunished fuel citizen outrage. Cellphone video of townsfolk pummeling cornered suspects accused of robberies and other misdeeds is a regular feature on TV news.

In some high-crime areas, handwritten billboards warn “delinquents” and “rats” that they will face street justice.

At least 25 people have been slain by mobs in Mexico this year, including victims beaten to death and burned, and 40 more have been rescued, according to Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission, a quasi-governmental watchdog group.

Law enforcement officials fear that hoaxes spread on Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms may be exacerbating the disturbing trend.

In the days before Flores and his uncle were targeted, half a dozen Mexican states issued public warnings refuting incendiary social media tales of kidnapping rings that remove organs from captive children to sell on the black market.

One WhatsApp message, labeled “red alert,” advised parents, teachers and others that a “plague of robachicos” had snatched an unspecified number of children, some as young as 4.

“We cannot permit [that] this keeps happening, parents, please pay attention,” the sham message advised.

Yikes 😣 I'd heard about the mob killings in India over fake news spread on WhatsApp... They even passed rules there that limit how many people you can share an article with in order to try to help the problem. I can't believe this happened because of the exact same thing 😥

Well In Some area its how much crime are you going to take to stop victim shaming from happening. Well some have responded and said its better to be part of a vigilante mob than let one more person be a victim.

Westchester County prosecutors are hoping to appeal a decision by a state appeals panel that recently overturned a conviction of a man who fatally shot a Rockland County fugitive in 2013.

This past summer an appellate panel decision dismissed the 2016 manslaughter conviction against David Carlson, who had been on trial for killing a man who had been wanted by Ramapo police on a violent rape charge.

Carlson shot Norris Acosta-Sanchez at his Orange County property in what he claimed was self-defense. Westchester prosecutors tried the case and had provided flawed instructions to some jury members during the panel's selection, according to the appellate panel decision.

The Westchester County District Attorney's Office said it has filed an application with the state Court of Appeals seeking leave to appeal the appellate decision, which it said is the first step in trying to get an appeal heard.

Acosta-Sanchez was killed on Oct. 11, 2013. He had been staying at Carlson's summer cabin in Sparrowbush, near the Pennsylvania border.

After finding out that Acosta-Sanchez was wanted for raping a minor, Carlson worked with police to capture him. As he helped capture Acosta-Sanchez, Carlson said, he was attacked by the 35-year-old, whom he shot and killed.

Carlson was sentenced to five years in prison, but has been free on $500,000 bail since last November, pending his appeal, his lawyer, Benjamin Ostrer, said in August.

As Usual this will end in blame the hero.

A priest has offered to meet those responsible for yesterday's paramilitary-style attack in Ballymoney - and says there must be a "zero tolerance" approach towards such incidents by the Churches and the community.

Father Martin Magill of the #StopAttacks group, which aims to eradicate paramilitary justice, extended the invitation having witnessed the "physical and psychological trauma" he says such incidents inflict.

The parish priest of St John's Church on Belfast's Falls Road called for an end to such attacks by those who act as "self-appointed judge, jury and executioner".

"I am looking for zero tolerance to these attacks from the churches and community," he said.

"#StopAttacks is a coalition which is calling for an end to vigilante-style justice, and some of us would be willing to meet those involved in this attack.

"I would want to listen to start with, to find out why they are doing this.

"I'm going to work on the basis that they want the best for the local community, and that in some strange, warped sort of way they feel under pressure to act like this.

"But there are so many alternatives and creative ways, better ways of dealing with issues, rather than people taking the law into their own hands.

"I have spoken to victims over the past 20 or 30 years and they are still living with the physical and psychological scars.

"It also has a traumatic knock-on effect on children, so the cycle of trauma repeats itself.

"These attacks have been going on for about 50 years, and it is time for them to stop."

Fr Magill said that local Churches must "give a lead" whenever such attacks occur.

"There have been some quite cynical comments online in the wake of this, with people saying that there must have been some reason for it," he added.

"That is far from showing Christian compassion, it's very judgmental.

"I don't use the words 'punishment attacks', as that indicates that they are justified.

"These things are happening quite regularly now, and I'm shocked to see the amount of silence around it.

"There is fear, but it's important we stand together."

Rev Stephen Woods of Ballymoney Methodist Church said that the "brutal and despicable act" had "no place in any civil society".

He said: "I'm sure I speak for all our local Church leaders in saying that these vigilante attacks need to be condemned and challenged by all members of our community. I would appeal to anyone with information about this attack to support and assist police in their investigation."

Clerk of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Route Presbytery, Rev Noel McClean, said: "None of us want this kind of incident in our community whatsoever. It is important that we join with others in condemning horrific attacks like this.

"Such attacks on the young or old alike had no place in our past and certainly have no place in our future. We would encourage anyone with information to contact the police service."

Chair of Ballymoney Churches Forum Patricia Crossley expressed "disgust" at the attack, and said that "there can be no justification whatsoever for any individual or groups to take upon themselves the right to administer such summary injustice".

ANother Mob Hit Took Place in Mexico and its a vigilante group torturing someone they accuse of being a Paedo.

They severely beat the men and burned the detective after dousing him with fuel during the lynching, in the town of Metepec .

It was unclear if he was on duty or if they knew he was a detective.

Footage taken by by-standers shows one man in flames as the mob begins to attack him.

It also shows a mob kicking one of the men in the town square and beating him with cudgels and fists.

The mob pulls his trousers down and one of the crowd runs and takes a kick at his head.

The mob gathered outside a an office and dragged the men out

In the footage some police officers can be seen walking around as the beating takes place though eventually they rescue him and two others.

The prosecutors' office said it was investigating and would bring the killers and other members of the mob to justice.

"Let it be clear, inciting or promoting these kind of acts is also a crime," the office said.

In similar cases, prosecutors have been able to identify and arrest suspects because townspeople often record the lynchings on their phones.

Lynchings have become more frequent in Mexico and are often triggered by false rumours.

In August a 150 strong mob burned alive a pair of suspected child kidnappers after dragging them out of a police station.

Eventually officers intervened to save the men who were being beaten

Eventually officers intervened to save the men who were being beaten
Locals in the village of San Vicente Boquer?n, in the Acatl?n de Osorio region, initially handed over the two men to the authorities.

In a statement, local prosecutors “ruled out that the deceased had participated in some crime”.

Meanwhile in May, an angry mob beat-up a suspected thief before burning him alive in a public square.

The disturbing scenes were filmed in the town of Villa Tamulte de las Sabanas in the Mexican state of Tabasco.

In the video, the stripped suspect can be seen bleeding from his face as a group of furious locals surround him and take it in turns to batter him.

Central and South American including Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia and Guatemala have seen an upsurge in reported lynchings in recent years.

Ra?l Rodr?guez Guill?n, who has been studying the phenomenon in Mexico for 20 years, said rising crime and poor policing is behind more people taking the law into their own hands.

"The most serious thing that is happening is that authority is eroding and that in the long term I think it is more serious than the growth of crime," he said.

The incident of vigilante groups belonging to political parties will not end anytime soon as members of a group affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Hawks stormed the Brong Ahafo region Circuit court and allegedly chased the Judge who presided over an assault case.
According to reports, the vigilante group took the law into their own hands and chased out the judge who was presiding an assault case between one Sefa Kenneth of Hwidiem and Ahmed Usman who is known to be a close ally of the Member of Parliament of Asutifi South, Collins Dauda.

    Authority is eroding?

You mean authority is absent, and has been for years. Why? Poverty is one reason. You give a cop $100 in Guatemala and tell him to do something, he's gonna do it.

But the people are equally to blame, because they've lost their ability to reason.

They are angry and taking it out on those whom society deems unworthy - criminals, only...the people that are the victims far too often in crimes like these ARE NOT the guilty party after all, and that is the most disturbing outcome of these scenarios by far.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for instant karma. Some of the degenerates on this planet deserve nothing less than to be immediately put to death. But to do it to an innocent person you mistake for the guilty is a crime that should be equally punishable, especially with the mob mentality that erupts.
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

The alleged messaging was said to have happened between May 22 and May 31 2017, at Potelle?s home in Dundee.

A second charge states the 47-year-old also sent sexual messages to who he believed to have been a girl under the age of 13, between August 1 and August 22, again from his home address.

However, Dundee Sheriff Court heard that the ?children? were in fact adults belonging to a ?vigilante? group who work to ensnare people who they believe to be paedophiles.

Potelle?s solicitor Theo Laverty argued that their actions amounted to ?entrapment? and that his client was ?deceived? into the alleged offences.

Mr Laverty said: ?The members of the group see themselves as augmenting the police force.

Sick paedo who thought he was meeting schoolboy, 13, for sex in Glasgow jailed for two years after vigilante Grindr sting
?However, they are not bound by regulation and carry out unauthorised undercover operations.

?It is not simply a case of individuals witnessing a crime and reporting it.

?My client was deceived into this.?

Sheriff Alastair Brown continued the case without plea until November 2 for further clarification.

He said: ?I?m aware that the official position of the police is that people who carry on with this type of vigilante action are a serious problem.?

Last week, a Fife paedophile walked free from court after being targeted in a similar sting operation.

David Jackson was caught after making contact with a decoy social media profile allegedly belonging to a pre-teen boy named Cameron.

The 37-year-old was actually talking to a member of the Wolfpack Hunters UK group who expose alleged sex offenders by posing as young children online.

He was told he would have been sent to jail had he been speaking to an actual child.

A Kilrush Councillor has said people in the town are considering forming a vigilante group in a bid to protect their property.

Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says concerns are high over incidents in which property is being targeted.

Garda figures show 24 recorded thefts from vehicles in the past nine months, representing an 85 per cent spike in such incidents.

    Vigilantes in Ireland

A MAN shot in the leg in west Belfast at the weekend was questioned about a firework attack on the home of Gerry Adams earlier this year.

The victim, in his thirties, was shot in the leg in the Norglen Road/Monagh Crescent area of Turf Lodge at around 11.30pm on Sunday.

It emerged on Monday that a shot was also fired through a window in a nearby Sinn F?in office around the same time.

The man was later taken to hospital with injuries police have said are “potentially life changing”.

He was one of two men arrested after commercial fireworks were thrown at the homes of former Sinn F?in president Mr Adams and of party colleague Bobby Storey in July. He was later released without charge.

There is no suggestion the shooting is in any way linked to the attacks on the senior republicans.

Forensic teams combed the area yesterday and appeared to recover an empty bullet casing from the scene.

Sinn F?in MLA Pat Sheehan confirmed his office was targeted.

“The people who carried out this attack have left a man with potentially life-changing injuries,” he said.

“They then recklessly fired a shot across the road and through the window of my constituency office, endangering anyone who may have been in the vicinity.”

“That is an attack on the democratically expressed wishes of the people of his area. Sinn F?in will not be deterred by this mindless attack from providing services to the people of Turf Lodge and west Belfast by the thugs who carried out this attack.”

A forensic officer places a suspected bullet casing into an evidence bag at the scene of the paramilitary-style shooting. Picture by Mal McCann
During the attack on the west Belfast home of Mr Adams a large firework is believed to have been launched from a passing vehicle, causing damage to a car parked in the driveway. Mr Storey’s home was attacked a short time later, causing minor damage. It is believed the attacks were carried out by members of a vigilante group based in west Belfast. Several hundred people later attended a rally in the west of the city in support of the two republicans.

SDLP councillor Tim Attwood condemned the shooting saying: “Paramilitary-style attacks have no place in our society and must stop immediately.”

“Those taking the law into their own hands must themselves be brought to justice.

“People in west Belfast have the right to live free from this type of vigilantism that does nothing to right wrongs but merely causes more irreparable damage to our community.”

A police spokesman said: “We are treating this brutal shooting as a paramilitary-style attack.

“This incident is another example of how criminal groups seek to control communities through fear and violence."

This sounds Familiar though but Im not sure where.

Yes Now SOuth Africa is dealing with a similar issue of vigilantes going after drugs

Business goes on for drug dealers in Hillbrow more than a week after vigilante residents chased them and their customers away; but it is far from business as usual.

The vigilantes forced dealers from one of the most lucrative drug turfs in the neighbourhood, but they continue to do business a block away.

However, a user told GroundUp that it was a ?completely different scene now. It?s really bad.?

About 100 people surprised dealers on the corners of Fife Road and O?Reilly Road (in neighbouring Berea) on Saturday, 6 October, in protest against what they say is the blatant peddling and use of drugs. The violence escalated with protesters damaging property and attacking people. Police then intervened but were pelted with bottles and stones.

The protest went on until after dark with tyres burning in the road. The protesters included a group of people wearing yellow shirts with ANC insignias, toyi-toying while loud music blared from speakers.

Tension was still high late last week. Dealers were standing in small groups or alone and shooed buyers away as soon as they had purchased their drugs.

A user said they used to be able to sit on the pavements of O?Reilly Street and smoke ?Thai joints? (heroin mixed with dagga and tobacco) or rocks (crack cocaine) at leisure, 24 hours a day. And many homeless users lived on their dealer?s turf.

Several users agreed that the residents were upset because drugs were being used so openly, including the use of needles by injecting drug users. When asked about the residents? complaints that police did nothing, one user just laughed and said the only reason the police came around was to collect payoffs.

?One of those people (protestors) is a woman from the block of flats there. She has a child who is hooked on Thai.?

According to the users the vigilantes first chased the dealers on the Saturday that the chaos started, but the next day they returned and targeted users. One said he had been hit several times with a sjambok.

GroundUp was aggressively told to leave the area and, more than once, warned by passersby to avoid going up O?Reilly road where ?those people will beat you.?

According to residents, users and police sources, Nigerian syndicates have been entrenched in this part of Hillbrow for almost 20 years. They once occupied the Sands hotel before police operations, which targeted other hotels too, forced them out.

O?Reilly Road had grown to resemble an ?open air drug bazaar? trading 24 hours a day. Dealers have staked out small claims of turf within about a three-block radius.

Now, it is eerily quiet with a few pedestrians. Neither users nor dealers dare go too near it.

In stark contrast just two blocks away, Primrose Terrace has dozens of homeless users sleeping there and using drugs.

Drug policy activist Shaun Shelly said he was concerned about what?s happening in Hillbrow. ?South Africa is at a tipping point. We could either move towards far more effective, progressive and rights-affirming policies or we could move towards a Phillipines-type situation where there is tacit and actual support for extra-judicial killing of people who use drugs.?
