    OMAHA, Neb. —
Locked up inside Douglas County Corrections, speaking via video call, James Fairbanks shares his side of the story that landed him in jail.

"Part of me was also angry I was put in this position in the first place," Fairbanks said, "I felt like the justice system had failed, like what was he even doing there?"

Fairbanks is charged with first degree murder in the death of convicted sex offender Mattieo Condoluci.

Police found Concoluci's body near 43rd and Pinkney in May.

Fairbanks emailed a confession to KETV Newswatch 7 four days later.

According to Fairbanks, he was searching for a rental where he could live, along with his 12-year-old son, and he decided to look up registered sex offenders in the area.

Fairbanks said Condoluci's address was near an apartment he was interested in. When Fairbanks drove by, he said he saw Condoluci watching children playing, and there was a playground in Condoluci's backyard.

"I was literally ill. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat," Fairbanks said, "I was so in knots about the whole thing."

Fairbanks said he went back to the area several times and eventually decided to confront Condoluci.

"I decided to go back and basically threaten him. I drove to his house. I pulled up. I was walking up to his front door. I don't know if he seen me coming or what he was doing but anyway, he opened up his door as I was approaching, and I pulled out my gun and told him to back up. He backed up into the house," Fairbanks said.

Fairbanks said he began to stutter after he noticed a purse and thought someone else may be in the house.

"At that point, he just came forward. He's a big man," Fairbanks said, "I started shooting as soon as he started coming forward."

Fairbanks said he left the house, expecting his arrest was imminent but hours passed and nothing happened.

"For a little while I thought 'hey I'll get away with this,' I can do this. I can just get rid of everything and just pretend like it never happened. That didn't sit right with me," he said.

Fairbanks said he did send an email to KETV Newswatch 7, which arrived four days after the shooting. Police arrested him the day after that. Fairbanks explained why he sent the email.

"I didn't want...the fact that he was a two-time sex offender with a playground in the backyard, and what I had seen, just kind of get swept under the rug," Fairbanks said.

I asked Fairbanks if he has regrets about what happened, if he feels remorse?

"I don't have remorse for Mr. Condoluci," Fairbanks said, "Sorry, I'm going to get emotional. I know I hurt my kids. I definitely have regrets about what they're going through."

Supporters rallied behind him with an online campaign titled Freedom for James Fairbanks.

Fairbanks said he hopes his motive and Condoluci's background will play a role in the trial.

"I don't believe that charge or a murder charge, a jury will convict me of, I honestly don't," he said.

Fairbanks has been employed by Omaha Public Schools in the past and said he worked with some children who were victims of abuse.

Fairbanks said he spoke with KETV Newswatch 7 against the advice of his lawyer because he wants to start a conversation about changes to sex offender laws.

He would like to see mandatory minimum sentences for sex offenders and stricter rules when repeat offenders reenter society.

"Once you do it a second time, like Mr. Condoluci had, you don't get a third time. You don't get another chance to move into the neighborhood. Whether you're in prison for the next 20-25 years or they come up with a housing situation where they house 20 guys in a house. A sex offender house," Fairbanks said.

A vigilante who attacked an innocent man he wrongly branded a paedophile has been jailed after being exposed as a predator who targets young girls online.

Paul Tong, 34, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, was trapped in a sting operation after he sent explicit pictures and messages to an investigator posing as a 13-year-old called 'Gracie'.

In one message via the social media app Nearby, Tong said: 'I will warm you up by stripping you naked and putting my body against yours. Do you want to get naked?

In 2015, Tong along with another man and a woman, raided the home of a man they mistakenly believed was hiding a seven-year-old boy after they saw him handing out sweets to children.

During the attack one of the gang shouted: 'Open this door you paedophile, open the f****** door', before Tong kicked it down causing ?500 in damage.

The victim was then repeatedly punched in the face and was treated for a fractured cheekbone as well as cuts and bruises.

Judge Timothy Stead at Bolton Crown Court described Paul Tong, pictured in this custody mugshot, as a 'hypocrite' given his previous offending
Judge Timothy Stead at Bolton Crown Court described Paul Tong, pictured in this custody mugshot, as a 'hypocrite' given his previous offending

But Tong was given a suspended prison sentence due to the 'limited role' in he played in the assault.

At Bolton Crown Court on Tuesday, Tong was jailed for three years and four months after he admitted attempting to engage a child in sexual activity and attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act between November 18, 2017 and April 8, 2018.

He was in breach of his eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, imposed in July 2016.

Judge Timothy Stead told him: 'The hypocrisy of your offending in light of the facts of the previous offending is something I cannot completely overlook.

'Harm has not in fact taken place, but that was not intentional.'

The sting operation began in November 2017 when paedophile hunter group Redemption set up a fictional profile for a girl called 'Gracie' and posted it on the messaging service.

In mitigation, Tong's lawyer Martin Pizzey said: 'The defendant accepts the contradiction between the circumstances of his previous conviction and this offence.

'He accepts he had the conversation and has since reflected on his motivation for it. He had no intention of meeting her and made no effort to set up a meeting.

'The defendant accepts he did something wrong and he wasn't in a state of denial when spoken to by police. He accepts full responsibility and that he needs help. He is genuinely sorry although he accepts that is no excuse.'

Tong was also ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register and was made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention order for a indefinite period.

Paul Tong who is now convicted for Harassment of Underage Girls was once convicted for civilian brutality on an innocent man after he made false rape allegations. Yes the Power of Karma is strong here.

A VIGILANTE gang beat up a vulnerable man in his home after accusing him of being a paedophile.

At Bolton Crown Court, Brian Cooper was jailed for a year, while Patricia Roberts and Paul Tong were each given suspended prison sentences after pleading guilty to causing actual bodily harm to the man at his house in Farnworth.

The court was told how Roberts had gone to the victim’s house on September 2 last year believing her son was inside the property.

Jane Dagnall, prosecuting, said: “Miss Roberts turned up at his address shouting ‘if you’re in there open this door, open this door you paedophile, open the ****ing door.’

“She was banging on the door and the window and was then joined by Mr Cooper who started banging on the window.”

Then 31-year-old Tong pulled up outside the house, with Roberts’ seven-year-old son in his car.

Mrs Dagnall said that, despite this, the three adults continued to attack the house, with Tong then kicking the door off its hinges and causing ?500 worth of damage.

Cooper and Roberts rushed into the house and a neighbour, who had heard the shouting and banging, called the police.

Mrs Dagnall said: “Miss Roberts went in the living room and started punching the victim seven or eight times in the head.

“Mr Cooper then punched him hard to the right hand side of his head causing him to fall backwards on to the sofa.”

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for a fractured cheek bone and bruises and cuts.

Cooper, aged 40, and Roberts, 40, both of Starcliffe Street, Farnworth and Tong, of Ainsworth Road, Little Lever, all pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

Martin Pizzey, defending Roberts, said that on the day of the attack she was at work and had left her son with a babysitter. But when she called later in the day she discovered that he was missing.

He said: “It is unusual circumstances that led to her being at this man’s house. It has been mentioned that this could be viewed as a vigilante attack on a vulnerable person, but so far as Miss Roberts was concerned she was under the impression at the time that her child was still in that building.

“At no point was she told that he was in the car with Mr Tong. It is a regrettable misunderstanding as the information she received from the babysitter was mistaken.”

The court heard that she was told by the babysitter that her son had gone to the house, where it was claimed the man had been giving children sweets and small amounts of money.

Mr Pizzey added: “She fully accepts her responsibility and that her reaction was inappropriate and if she could turn back time she would. However, her behaviour could be described as maternal protective instinct — but sadly reason went out of the window.”

Marianne Alton, defending Cooper, said that there was no premeditation in the attack.

She said: “They went there looking for answers as to where Miss Roberts’ son was — there was no intention of assaulting the victim. The victim did not open the door and she was still looking for answers and the events escalated out of control.”

Sentencing Cooper to 12 months in jail, Recorder Simon Killeen told him: “The reality is that you had turned up at his (the victim’s) house and Mr Tong turned up with Miss Roberts’ son in his car and the man was not a danger to anybody.

“Instead of contacting the police and behaving civilly, you acted like a group of thugs.

“At some point you must have realised that you were deliberately targeting this man and you were all part of that group.

“It was an act of terror towards a vulnerable man in his own home.”

Recorder Killeen added that Cooper’s “appalling” previous record was an aggravating feature in his case and as the defendant was led from the dock he punched a wall.

The judge said Tong had a “limited role” in the incident and he was given an eight month jail sentence suspended for two years.

He was also given 100 hours unpaid work and will have to wear an electronic tag for two months as part of a 6pm to 6am curfew.

Roberts was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years and Recorder Killeen told her: “This is totally out of character and it’s obvious from when you left the house with your head in your hands saying ‘what on earth have I done’ that you were remorseful.”

She must also carry out 150 hours unpaid work and will be subject to a 7pm to 7am curfew, wearing an electronic tag, for two months.

James Fairbanks enters a plea in court for his hearing in relation to killing a convicted rapist.

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - New documents show a not guilty plea from an Omaha man accused of murdering a convicted sex offender was accepted by the court.

James Fairbanks allegedly shot and killed Mattieo Condoluci, a registered sex offender who was convicted twice of crimes against children.

Fairbanks says he saw Condoluci staring at children next door and saw he had a playground in his backyard. He was looking for a place to live in the area, knew of Condoluci's past, and said he had to do something to make sure he couldn't hurt any other children.

In an early June interview, Fairbanks said he would go to trial because he doesn't think a jury would unanimously convict him of first degree murder if they can see all the facts.

Triumphant protesters cheered last week as Edmonton police officers escorted accused child predator Wade Stene from his mother's home into a police van and back to jail.

Protesters had spent two weeks keeping watch on the bungalow in the McQueen neighbourhood after Stene was released on bail under house arrest near his alleged eight-year-old victim. His address was posted on social media.

But when Stene asked to go back to jail for his own safety, many protesters didn't go home.

Instead, they headed 12 kilometres north where another demonstration had erupted outside the residence of Donald George Dupuis in St. Albert, Alta. The high-risk offender was said to be living near his victim after serving 12 months for sexual interference of a child.

Within days, news spread that Dupuis had moved out of the neighbourhood, but protesters aren't done.

The People vs. Predators Facebook page, previously named The People vs. Wade Stene page, has amassed nearly 3,000 members and is organizing another protest Saturday in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. That's where Damien Christopher Starrett — who was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his one-year-old son Ares — is out on bail.

Dozens of supporters on Facebook said they planned to attend. Others on the page shared their own personal stories or opinions about child predators and frustrations with a criminal justice system many suggested is broken.

    The people vs. Wade Stene
Last March, Stene allegedly pulled an eight-year-old girl he didn't know into a vehicle, sexually assaulted her, then dropped her off in the McQueen neighbourhood. Ten days later, police charged him with kidnapping, sexual assault with a weapon and threats causing death or bodily harm. Court records show that if convicted it would be Stene's first offence in Alberta.

On June 16, Justice Douglas Mah granted Stene bail after a provincial court judge denied his release a month earlier.

In a public warning, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said Stene posed a significant risk of harm to the community.

Police later explained to CBC News that they have a duty to warn the public about significant health and safety risks, citing Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation, as well as common law rule.
That warning set off alarm bells in the McQueen neighbourhood where some residents told CBC News that initially the community was united in wanting Stene out.

Zak Gladue, who has a daughter and lives just outside McQueen, said he protested at Stene's residence for 13 days because of "a bad call on behalf of the justice system."

"I feel the victims don't have a voice," Gladue said in an interview. "It's about community coming together and realizing if there's a problem, we can fix it."

He emphasized that the protest should remain peaceful but said rocks and eggs were thrown after some outsiders turned up.

It's about community coming together and realizing if there's a problem, we can fix it."
    - Zak Gladue
"That's not what we're about," Gladue said. "We are a peaceful protest. We don't want the violence. We don't wish any harm against Mr. Stene or Mrs. Stene, and anybody who comes by here — if you're coming by to cause problems, you're not welcome."

But some residents who spoke to CBC News said the protest became more aggressive, stretching on into the night, where an increasing number of protesters appeared to be outsiders. Some of those who raised concerns on social media were accused of supporting pedophiles.

Meanwhile, demonstrators set up tents and a porta-potty where a coffin and noose were also spotted.

With kids nearby, some protesters yelled, "F--k you, Wade" repeatedly on a megaphone. The white jeep allegedly used in the abduction was smashed, with the word "scum" scrawled onto the exterior.

Edmonton police confirmed to CBC News that officers are investigating a number of alleged criminal acts in relation to the protests.

Vigilantism on the rise, expert says
Scott Blandford, a public safety programs co-ordinator, professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and retired police officer, described the Stene protest as the emboldening of vigilantism, which he said appeared to be on the rise.

He said it's partly the result of how quickly false information can spread on social media, along with a greater distrust of government and policing and a lack of understanding of how the justice system works.

"In this day and age, there's that demand for instant justice, and that's just not the way our system is designed," Blandford said.

"Who's to say that he could afford to move anywhere else or stay in a hotel room, plus the fact that on the other side of the coin — why should someone be penalized? Which forcing them to move essentially is a punitive measure before they've even been convicted."

    McQueen resident Nathan DeVries disagreed.

Partly due to concerns about vigilantism, DeVries instead launched a petition that drew nearly 17,000 signatures in support of removing Stene from the neighbourhood.

Nathan DeVries launched a petition that was signed by thousands seeking to have Stene removed from Edmonton's McQueen neighbourhood. (NAIT)
DeVries, whose eight-year-old daughter is a close friend of the alleged victim, said he wanted to show support for the family and restore a sense of safety to a neighbourhood still healing after the alleged crimes.

    He also wants answers.

"He hasn't pled either way in court. I get that," DeVries said. "But recognizing that a crime was committed in our community, and he is the accused in that crime — that is factual.

"And to then place him back in the community seems to be lacking some of that common sense and the understanding of the psychological ramifications for a young kid on how that would affect her and her family, and also the rest of the community at large."

Alberta Justice said the United Conservative Party (UCP) government is committed to "a faster, fairer and a more responsive justice system."

"Without commenting on specific cases before the courts, our government believes that those found guilty of crimes involving sexual violence and violence against children should face serious sentences appropriate to their crimes and remain incarcerated as is necessary to protect public safety," wrote Jonah Mozeson, press secretary to Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer, in an email.

Mozeson said the government had already taken notable action including doubling of funds for ALERT's Internet Child Exploitation unit, which arrested 18 suspects for child exploitation offences last month.

    'The very best'
Retired Edmonton police detective Wil Tonowski said he understands why people are so critical of the justice system. He used to feel the same way, until he attended hundreds of parole board hearings during his last decade at EPS where he was in charge of the high-risk offenders section.

He said the success of the programs far outweigh the failures.

"We're right up there with the very best in the world," Tonowski said.

Among the examples, Tonowski lauded tailor-made sentencing, top-notch rehabilitation programming that interrupts the crime cycle and strict release conditions approved at several levels that can include as many check-ins as twice a day.

Tonowski said police also work with offenders to try to find a safe place for them to work and live so they won't reoffend again — describing it as a tough balance.

"You want to warn the public that this individual is out there again," he said. "On the other hand, you can't just throw them out there with no support system whatsoever … which increases his risk level and then he's reoffending again."

But Tonowski said an offender should never be released in the same area as the victim.

"Something like that warrants some sort of an inquiry," he said.

A convicted paedophile has lost a Supreme Court challenge over the use evidence gathered by paedophile hunter groups.

The UK's highest court ruled on Wednesday (July 15) that the interests of children have priority over any interest a paedophile could have in being allowed to engage in criminal conduct.

Mark Sutherland was convicted in August 2018 of attempting to communicate indecently with an older child, and related offences, after evidence collected by a paedophile hunter group was handed to police. He was jailed for two years.

He brought a Supreme Court challenge arguing that his right to a private life, enshrined in Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, had been breached.

The court was asked to rule on the issue of whether prosecutions based on evidence gathered in covert sting operations by paedophile hunter groups are compatible with a person's human rights.

The ruling by a panel of five justices unanimously dismissed Sutherland's appeal and said the public prosecutor was entitled to introduce evidence obtained by a "decoy" at Sutherland's trial to try to secure a conviction.

The decision has been welcomed by a senior lecturer in law at Coventry University who said the judgement was paramount for "protecting children".

    What did the ruling say?
Announcing the Supreme Court's decision, Lord Sales said the court held there was "no interference with the accused's rights" under Article 8 - which provides the right to a private life and correspondence.

He said: "It is implicit in Article 8 that in order to be protected the activity in question should be capable of respect within the scheme of values which the Convention on Human Rights exists to protect and promote.

"Children have rights under Article 8 as well. Under that provision, the state has a special responsibility to protect children against sexual exploitation by adults.
"This indicates that there is no protection under Article 8 for the communications by the accused in this case. The interests of children have priority over any interest a paedophile could have in being allowed to engage in the criminal conduct in issue here.

"Since the state has to deter offences against children in order to protect their rights, the public prosecutor was entitled to introduce the evidence from the decoy at the trial of the accused to try to secure a conviction."

The court also found that Sutherland had "no reasonable expectation of privacy".

Lord Sales said: "His communications were sent directly to the decoy. There was no prior relationship between the accused and the decoy from which an expectation of privacy could be said to arise.

"In addition, the accused believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old child, and it was foreseeable that a child of that age might share any worrying communications with an adult."
    Privacy is a 'conditional right'
Maureen O'Hara, senior lecturer in criminal and family law at Coventry University, reacted to the ruling, saying: "I'm very pleased the court reached that judgement for protecting children. The judgement said that there has been no interference with his rights under Article 8.

"Article 8 is not an absolute right, but a conditional right, because to be protected the activities have to be ones that are worthy of respect.

"The court said the interests of children to be protected from sexual exploitation takes authority over legal rights for his (Sutherland's) privacy to be protected.

"So for protecting children from sexual exploitation it's a very important judgement and not only were his rights under Article 8 not breached, they weren't interfered with.

    CLICK TO PLAY
HOW DOES THE SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER WORK
"It would have been concerning had they said that somebody using the internet for the purpose of trying to meeting children for sexual exploitation had privacy in doing so."

And while the university lecturer welcomed the judgement, she admits there remains an issue around any reliance on evidence gathered by paedophile hunter groups.

She said: "These groups are not regulated like the police and more robust investigations by the police would be preferable to vigilante groups doing this."

When asked if trying to claim that Sutherland's privacy had been breached was an odd angle to use in court, Mrs O'Hara said: "It's quite a creative one.

"I think he would have taken that angle as there weren't many others open to him. It was very clear he had contacted this person and believed them to be 13 and had sent them sexual imagery.

"So the only potential avenue for him would have been the process or the procedure by which the evidence was achieved. It wouldn't have been credible had he said it hadn't happened as the evidence was there."

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- In 2016, a then 23-year-old Zach Sweers was advised by authorities to stop doing “sting” operations on men who responded to his online persona as an underage teen girl.

He did, at least judging by his social media pages at the time. Two men he caught on video had sued him.

Now three years later, he’s back to posting videos akin to the popular “To Catch A Predator” show.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker learned two week ago that Sweers had begun posting new videos to his Anxiety War web site.

In some, they show him confronting men who came to see him, thinking he was the teen girl they chatted with online. In one, he picks up a man’s dropped car keys and wrestles with the man over them.

Becker on Wednesday, June 12 joined the state Attorney General’s office and state police in warning against such video vigilantism.

“It’s dangerous to himself and it’s dangerous to the public,” Becker said.

In 2016 it was Becker’s then-boss, retired Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth, who issued a plea for Sweers to stop and told him that prosecutors would no longer look into cases he investigated.

Becker said Forsyth’s message still applies today.

“We’re not going to work with him. We want nothing to do with him,” Becker said.

He said Sweers’ motive for the videos, in his opinion, is self-serving.

Sweers appears to have started posting new videos in early April. The introduction to the first video starts with the words “Anxiety War 2.0” and “I’m Back.”

He responded to an email for comment Wednesday, but only to say that he planned to issue a video response to the Attorney General’s warning.

“There is so much more to all of this...," he wrote.

In 2016, prosecutors did charge seven men with accosting a child for immoral purposes based on initial evidence-gathering by Sweers. Those videos already had been made when police learned of them, and they soon asked him to stop.

Two of the men he captured on video ended up suing him and Sweers settled those cases. No details about the settlement were released.

Damn this went down and apparently even the daughter of the dead rapist says her father did to her

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The daughter of Omaha sex offender Mattieo Condoluci, who was killed in May, is speaking out about the years of abuse she endured from her father.

Amanda Henry says she was molested by her father as a child.

We spoke with her shortly after she'd learned of her father's death, but in a recent interview with Court TV, Henry says she was terrified of her father.

In May, Henry told us she didn't have any ill will toward James Fairbanks, the man who has been charged with her father's murder.

Condoluci was found dead inside his home near 43rd and Pinkney in mid-May.

Prosecutors say Fairbanks sent an anonymous email to all local media -- including KMTV -- confessing to killing Condoluci.

In his letter, Fairbanks says he learned of Condoluci's past and couldn't let him victimize any more children.

Henry, who tells us she hadn't spoken to her dad since the last time he was arrested for child molestation in 2006, says she was terrified of her father.

"I've had to live in fear for 34 years, and it has been the worst pain that I could imagine… and so when I finally got the phone call, yes, I was relieved," says Henry.

Fairbanks is charged with 1st-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. His pretrial is set for August 19th.

Footage has emerged of a convicted sex offender getting punched in the head, as vigilantes track the paedophile's every move.

Shannon Norgate was convicted of sexually abusing two boys in a school toilet block at Gladstone, in Queensland's north-west in 2019. He impersonated a security guard to lure them inside.

The 22-year-old is on probation after serving 406 days in jail, and was staying at a property near Brisbane until Wednesday, when he was told to move along by police

Since this moment, every move he makes is being tracked by vigilantes online, eager to ensure his relocation doesn't pose a risk to nearby children.
One of those people decided to take justice into their own hands on Friday, punching Norgate as he waited at a Brisbane transit centre.

Footage shows the man walk up to Norgate, throw a cup at his face and then punch him in the head.

The woman recording can be heard giggling as the 22-year-old shields himself from the blow.
A series of photographs have also been published online of Norgate travelling on public transport around the city.

Police asked the sex offender to relocate from his premises on Wednesday because of its close proximity to the Yeronga State School.

Members of the public reported seeing him near the police headquarters at Roma Street in Brisbane earlier this morning.

Hindutva stormtroopers are carbon copies of the Islamic fundamentalist groups they so detest. It would be funny, if it was not so tragic, that Hindu vigilante outfits operate much like their counterparts in Pakistan or Afghanistan. The irony however is completely lost on them.

Intolerance is a basic trait shared by self-righteous right-wing outfits across the world whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Jew. Those who do not pray as I do, or dress as I like, or believe in my interpretation of facts, is the other—the enemy who should be taught a lesson. So murder, rape, bullying can all be justified, so long as it is done in the name of “the greater good”. Bloodthirsty killers and goons become heroes and martyrs.

Take the rigid blasphemy laws of Pakistan. Anyone can be hauled up for real or imaginary insults to the Prophet. In 2011, the Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was gunned down by his bodyguard Mumtaz Qadri for daring to question the blasphemy laws of the country. He merely spoke up for a Christian girl who was the target of one such group.

Taseer’s brutal murder shocked Pakistan’s liberals to the core. But Qadri was hailed as a hero by several Islamist groups in the country. Qadri was hanged for the murder amid protests from thousands of Islamists. His funeral was attended by thousands of common people who believed Qadri had done no wrong by acting against a governor who was anti-Islam and pro-Christian. Blasphemy laws are not associated with Hinduism. Yet the spate of killings in the name of protecting the sacred cow, are no different. Vigilante killings in India have gone up since the BJP government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected to power with a massive majority.

There may have been vigilante killings earlier but with the ascent of Modi the Sangh Parivar, or the larger Hindutva family, took the centre stage in Indian politics. With the ruling BJP well-ensconced in Delhi, flaunting one’s religious beliefs became much more acceptable. The days of Left and liberal ideology were over. And the Indian elite, accustomed to veer towards the power centre, took a massive right turn. The fact that the world was also turning right helped.

The first lynching case was in 2015, when Mohammad Akhlaq, a 52-year old Muslim iron-smith, was attacked by a mob of 18 Hindus on suspicion that his family had beef in their home. The incident happened in Bisada village in Dadri area of Uttar Pradesh. “Mohammad Akhlaq messed with our religion, he messed with our gau mata, what happened to him was right,” one of the accused who was later freed on bail said later. Certainly no remorse for killing an innocent man. Ravi Sisodia, a member of the killer mob, developed complications and died. Villagers wrapped his body in the Indian tricolour and gave him a funeral worthy of a hero. They felt he had done his religious duty by protecting the cow, sacred to Hindus. A Union minister, Mahesh Sharma attended the funeral and promised help to the “martyr’s” family.

In 2019, Vishal Singh one among the mob that lynched Aklaq to death was spotted sitting on the front row of a meeting addressed by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Bisada village. All of them are out on bail and chances are, they will escape punishment. The Delhi riots in February once again highlighted the aggressive and self-righteous mood among Hindus who believed that they were taking just revenge on anti-CAA protesters.

The police charge sheet reported by the Wire spoke of a WhatsApp group called “Kattar Hindut Ekta” was formed during the riots. The messages they sent out are a chilling reminder of the mindset of the attackers. This was the mob that killed nine Muslims in Bhagirathi Vihar in North East Delhi, according to the police report. Here is one, sent out by accused Lokesh Solanki to the group on 25 February: “Brother Lokesh Solanki this side from Ganga Vihar area if any Hindu need any back up then do contact. We have men, arms, and ammunition. I have just killed two Muslims in Bhagirathi Vihar area and thrown them in drain with the help of my team.”

Whether court hearings will lead to convictions is yet to be seen. But so far, in today’s India, minorities have been killed with impunity.

The Hindutva supporters loudly proclaim the virtues of Hinduism, a religion of infinite tolerance with an ability to absorb different cultures and people into its fold. Yet Hinduism, as practised by the current Hindutva followers, is far removed from the philosophical all-embracing and open religion that the Rig Vedas and early scriptures preached. Some of the current practitioners have made Hinduism a formal orthodox and intolerant religion far removed from everything it was meant to be.

After the demolition of the Babri masjid in 1992, Saralata Barooah gave her take on Hinduism: “Those who have destroyed the masjid are not true followers of Hinduism. This is not something our religion has ever prescribed. Hinduism taught me to respect every religion not destroy places of worship that others cherish.” But that kind of broad Hinduism is no longer evident. When religion becomes a political tool, it has to be directed against the “Other”.

Persecuted groups ranging from Jews to Parsis were welcomed with open arms into India in the past. Mughal conquerors made India their home and contributed immensely to its culture. In modern times we had refugees from Bangladesh, Afghanistan as well as Sri Lankan Tamils fleeing from persecution to India. Pro-democracy activists of Myanmar did not just live in India, but the late NDA defence minister George Fernandes allowed the media wing of the movement to operate from his official residence in the heart of Lutyens Delhi.

After the partition of India in 1947, Pakistan chose to be a theocratic state with Islam as the state religion. Though its founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah wanted minorities, including Hindus and Christians to have equal rights, he did not live long enough to enforce his vision. There is a move now to build a Krishna temple in Islamabad. The fundamentalists are up in arms against the move. But liberals in Pakistan are supporting the temple plans. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government had given the green signal. A $1.3 million instalment was advanced. But seminaries across Pakistan are objecting. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ally Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) has also vociferously objected. The construction has been stopped for now.

Down the years, Pakistan became increasingly orthodox. Military dictators as well as politicians used religion to further their rule. General Zia-ul-Haq was one of the worst offenders. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto amended Pakistan’s constitution to declare the Ahmadiya sect as non-Muslim. Now with the rise of Wahabi orthodox Islam, Sunnis have also become targets of extremist outfits like the Pakistani Taliban. The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, an Afghanistan-based Sunni extremist group which also operates in Pakistan, has made Shias its target. The bombing of Shia mosques in Pakistan is part of their agenda. It is a orthodox Sunni outfit.

India under Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru chose another path. The Indian Constitution allows freedom of worship. Indians were proud to be multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural. Yet all this is gradually changing as the country turns right, and is increasingly becoming a Hindu state where minorities have to take extra care not to disturb the over-sensitive Hindutva believers.

Though there have been many aberrations in the past, and Hindu-Muslim riots took place several times during Congress rule, and the 1984 massacre of Sikhs in Delhi is a black mark on Indian democracy, yet never before did ordinary Hindus flex their muscles at every imagined provocation by the Muslims. Do Sanghis want India to become a mirror image of Pakistan?

The child molester was watching PBS Kids again and Jonathan Watson says he simply couldn’t take it anymore.

Inmate Watson, 41, has publicly confessed to beating two convicted child molesters to death at a California prison last month, after one of them allegedly “taunted” him by watching children’s programming in a shared prisoner space. He told his side of the Jan. 16 rampage in a confession letter sent to the Mercury News earlier this week.

David Bobb, 48, died en route to the hospital while Graham De Luis-Conti, 62, passed away three days later. Both victims were serving life sentences for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old.

“Being a lifer, I’m in a unique position where I sometimes have access to these people and I have so little to lose,” Watson told the Mercury News. “And trust me, we get it, these people are every parents’ worst nightmare.”

Watson has not yet been charged, but prison officials identified him last month as the person responsible for beating two other inmates to death with a walking cane at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, Calif. Watson had only been at the facility for a week after he was transferred there from a higher-security institution. He is serving a life sentence for murder.

Watson says he never should have been transferred to the lower-security facility, where he was placed in a shared prison pod with several other inmates, including one of the convicted child molesters. According to his letter, the first victim seemed to “taunt” their entire pod by watching PBS Kids in full view of the other inmates.

“I could not sleep having not done what every instinct told me I should’ve done right then and there, so I packed all of my things because I knew one way or another the situation would be resolved the following day,” Watson wrote to the paper.

He claims he went to the prison counsellor the next day and asked for an “urgent” transfer to a more secure facility because he was afraid he might turn violent. He says the staffer declined his request, so he went back to his pod.

The prison guards did not notice the first attack, according to Watson’s account. He says he left the pod to tell a guard about what he’d done, but he stopped in his tracks when he spotted a “child trafficker” in a neighbouring cell.

“I figured I’d just do everybody a favour,” Watson wrote to the paper. “In for a penny, in for a pound.”

Afterward, Watson says he went to a guard and reported the killings immediately. He says the guard didn’t believe him until he looked in the dorm and “saw the mess I’d left.”

He told the paper that he gave prison staff a full confession, and he plans to plead guilty to whatever charges he faces.

Followers of the pedophile-obsessed QAnon conspiracy theory sent death threats to Democratic California State Senator Scott Wiener after Weiner introduced legislation to reform the state's sex offender registry.

California law allows judges to exclude certain offenders from having their names listed on the registry if they find a valid reason to do so for offenders who have sex with minor ages 15 to 17, according to Mother Jones. The decision to exclude such offenders isn't automatic, it's entirely up to the judge.

But judges only have this discretion if the case involves vaginal intercourse. If the case involves digital penetration, anal or oral sex—sexual methods often practiced by LGBTQ people—the judge must list the offender's full name without exception.

As such, Wiener sought to change the law to give judges similar discretion in cases of non-vaginal sex, treating all sexual acts equally. Some right-wing websites mischaracterized Wiener's legislation, claiming it sought to protect pedophiles by giving offenders complete anonymity.

"You're dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. I'll publicly execute you. I'm gonna embarrass you. Pedophile," one Instagram user wrote.

Another wrote, "I'll come cut your head off and deliver it to your mom if you even considering introducing your 'bill.' Got it?"

Others messages were anti-Semitic or accused Weiner of being a child rapist. Recent legal rulings upholding First Amendment protections for free speech dictate that politicians cannot block users on their social media accounts, leaving Weiner open to an ongoing torrent of hate speech and threats.

QAnon conspiracy theorists believe, among many things, that the administration of President Donald Trump will reveal the existence of a top-secret child sex trafficking network run by "deep state" senior Democrats.

QAnon believers have accused Oprah Winfrey, Chrissy Teigen, Hillary Clinton and even the online furniture retailer Wayfair of being part of a shadowy international pedophile ring.

Its believers have a long history of mobilizing against public targets by spreading conspiracies on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube and other platforms. The group's online activities have also increased since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic, a possible consequence of the upcoming presidential elections and additional time spent at-home as many schools and businesses remain closed.

"Whether its QAnon or Russian troll farms, these are factories of false info designed to undermine democracy and public discourse, and also to send a message to elected officials that if you pursue unpopular progressive change to help marginalized groups like queer kids, 'We're going to target you,'" Weiner told Mother Jones.

The Qanon insanity or hypocracy game

Waco police arrested a 30-year-old woman Wednesday morning on driving while intoxicated and aggravated assault charges after she chased at least two cars and intentionally crashed into one, later telling police she thought she was chasing a pedophile who had kidnapped a girl, arrest affidavits state.

Officers arrested Cecilia Celeste Fulbright, of Waco, at about 10 a.m., after she crashed into a barrier near the gas pumps at H-E-B on North 19th Street, police reported.

A driver called police at about 9:20 a.m. to report a small red car had chased them on North 19th Street but that they were able to get away, according to the affidavit.

About 20 minutes later, another driver reported the red car was chasing her and that the driver, Fulbright, was yelling at her and rammed her car multiple times before the caller pulled into the H-E-B parking lot on 19th Street, the affidavit states.

"Ms. Fulbright pursued (the driver) through the parking lot striking her again and an uninvolved Dodge Durango before Ms. Fulbright crashed into a cement pylon at the gas pumps," police reported.

    The other driver was uninjured.

When officers arrived, Fulbright was in her car "crying hysterically" and yelling that the other driver "was a pedophile and had kidnapped a girl for human trafficking." She said she rammed the other car "because she believed she was saving a child" from a pedophile she followed from Speegleville, but her account "did not match the timeline or any facts or evidence," the affidavit states.

She appeared to be "delusional" and under the influence of drugs, and a breath test showed her blood alcohol content was between 0.21% and 0.217%, more than double the legal limit of 0.08%, according to the affidavit. Officers reported they found "multiple cans of spray paint" in Fulbright's car. She said she had at least one beer but denied using other drugs, according to the affidavit.

After medical clearance, she was taken to McLennan County Jail on a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a Class A misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. She was released by Thursday on $11,000 bond.

Creep Catcher under investigation for a confrontation after the "Creep Catcher" Man posed as a 14 year old girl to go after another man. Guys at what point do the Creep Catchers end up more insane than even the "Original Victims" they are claiming to spare.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Authorities in Kirksville want to remind citizens that if they have information about someone committing a crime, report it to the police and let them investigate it.

On Sunday, Kirksville Police received a report from a citizen who discovered a video on SnapChat.

The video depicted a man confronting another man in a vehicle.

According to the man recording the confrontation, he posed as a 14-year-old girl on social media and the man inside the vehicle traveled to Kirksville to meet with who he believed to be the teen.

The confrontation included the man recording the video stepping in front of the second man's moving vehicle to confront him. Later the video of the confrontation was uploaded to a Facebook account titled “Kirksville PedoCatcher.”

Kirksville Police would like to address many disturbing things about this incident. It has been stated that police commented nothing could be done and it was referred to the “child porn detective.”

When the incident was first brought to the attention of authorities, KPD Detective Steve Feeney was made aware and began investigating.

Det. Feeney is part of the Internet Crime Against Children task force and routinely handles investigations involving sexual exploitation and social media. He immediately began investigating and taking steps to preserve any evidence.

This incident may have begun with the best of intentions, however, the confrontational manner in which it occurred presents many safety and legal issues.

Police are trained to gather and preserve evidence in a manner that will make that evidence presentable in a court of law.

The manner in which the incident was carried out also poses safety concerns. The “suspect” could have run over the man recording the incident or assaulted him in some other way.

Kirksville Police ask that such “vigilante justice” type incidents not take place. If you have information about someone committing a crime, report it to authorities and let them investigate it.

Anyone with information about this crime, or any suspicious activity is encouraged to contact the Kirksville Police Department at 660-785-6945, Central Dispatch at 660-665-5621, the Adair County Sheriff’s Office at 660-665-4600, anonymously at 660-627-BUST (2878), or email police@kirksvillecity.com.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Police Department is investigating reports of two white males attempting to lure children into a red, older-model Ford Ranger pickup truck.

The reports were first made on social media posts that went viral.

Sunday, the Department received several reported sightings of the men and the truck.

Both men, who police said appear to be suffering from an unknown cognitive impairment, were located and identified.

According to police, one of the men was attacked at a gas station "in a possible act of so-called vigilante justice" after three men recognized him from the viral posts.

The man was treated for a broken jaw.

The suspects from the attack have not been located.

Police said they have spoken with several people who said the two men have been acting suspiciously and following children and women.

However, police said "no incidents of attempted abduction have been reported."

"We cannot stress enough the importance of reporting suspicious behavior when it is occurring," said police. "Sometimes, people are reluctant to call 911 about behavior that they feel is suspicious or they choose to post on social media before calling authorities ... reporting suspicious activity immediately can help police prevent or interrupt crime."

The Department also cautions people to refrain from approaching the men and taking matters into their own hands.

If you or someone you know had a recent encounter with the men, police asked you to call 325-657-4315 as soon as possible to file a report.

Thats right even Teen Boys are getting into the Predator hunting business.

LEXINGTON — A convicted sex offender was in court Tuesday as both a defendant and a victim.

Elijah Bobbitt is charged with soliciting two teenage boys, who, according to authorities, responded to his online advances in December by luring him to a Glasgow home where they assaulted him.

The father of one of the boys, who authorities said allowed the assault to happen, has been convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Bobbitt, 26, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday, sending his case to a grand jury. But before being led back to jail, he was allowed to remain in the courtroom — as a victim — to observe hearings for the two juveniles, who were charged with assault and conspiracy to commit assault.

That part of the proceedings in Rockbridge County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court was closed to the public because of the age of the accused. Prosecutors and defense attorneys declined to comment afterward on the outcome of the case.

Authorities have said earlier that the two friends, who were 16 and 17 at the time, came to their attention after someone claiming to be the 16-year-old boasted about the incident on Facebook.

According to court records, Bobbitt used a fake Facebook account in which he posed as a female to solicit sex from the teens — only to be assaulted upon his arrival.

“Broke that pedos (sic) nose and whole face,” read a caption attached to an online photo that showed what appeared to be a bloody hand. The Snapchat photo, posted to one of the teen’s Facebook page, included a hashtag that read: “Make America Great Again.”

Following the incident, Bobbitt was charged with two counts of solicitation. Those charges prompted court officials to cite him for violating his probation, which stemmed from his conviction in 2015 of possession of child pornography and carnal knowledge of a teenage boy.

Also charged in the case was the father of one of the alleged attackers, who reportedly knew of the situation but did nothing to stop it.

George Mason, 37, was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sentenced to four days in jail as part of a plea agreement accepted by Judge Laura Dascher.

A second charge of conspiracy to commit assault was dropped as part of the agreement, which gave Mason 60 days in jail with all but four suspended and ordered him to perform 150 hours of community service while staying out of trouble for the next two years.

Authorities have said they do not condone the vigilante-style in which the unwelcome sexual advance was received, saying that such conduct should be reported to police.

Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Jared Moon said that Mason “should have put a stop to this before it got out of hand, and he didn’t.”

Mason said after the hearing that he had “mixed feelings” about the case, agreeing that maybe he should have called the police.

But, he added, a stranger “came to the residence with the intent of having relations with a minor. That was his sole intent, and he left here a little banged up.”

“For me, personally, I think he got what he deserved.”

Here is the lead up to the beatings on the accused

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A San Angelo mother shared her frightening encounter with two men in a red pickup truck suspected of trying to lure kids.

According to the mother, who asked us to conceal her identity, she was on South Bryant Street Thursday when she noticed a red truck behind her.

She said the when the driver tried to get beside her vehicle, he was staring at her oldest daughter.

“He starts to point at her, and so she’s looking at him because she can feel him looking. I guess and he’s pointing at her and he’s waving at her, and at this point he rolls his window down and he starts yelling stuff,” said the mother.

She said the man continued to follow and sped up to match their speed -- making her daughters feel uncomfortable.

Eventually, the mother said they got to a traffic light and the driver got out of his truck and pointed at her daughter.

“He gets out of his vehicle and he’s just pointing. Well, the light goes green, and so I take off cause at this point I didn’t feel like it was just an awkward encounter or some type of misunderstanding,” said the mother.

On Saturday, she saw a Facebook posts about a woman in Sonora who had a similar encounter with two men in what's believed to be the same truck.

Photos of the men and that red, older model Ford Ranger have gone viral on social media.

Police have received several reports about the men and are investigating.

They caution the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and call 325-657-4315 if you or someone you know has had encounters with these men.

According to police, one of the men was attacked at a gas station "in a possible act of so-called vigilante justice" after three men recognized him from the viral posts.

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean vigilante website that published personal details of people it accused of sex crimes suddenly went dark this week after a public backlash sparked by the death of one of its targets, as police hunt for its operators.

Calls have grown for tougher punishment for those guilty of sex crimes after a South Korean man convicted of running one of the world's largest online child pornography operations was released this year from 18 months in jail.

The "Digital Prison" website had listed, among others, 170 people it accused of roles in a network that blackmailed at least 74 women and underage girls into what authorities called “virtual enslavement” by sending them increasingly degrading and violent sexual imagery of themselves.

"Digital Prison is explicitly an illegal website," said Son Jae-woo, chief of a cyber investigation team of police seeking to track down its operators.

The website put up personal details of those it said were criminals, ranging from photographs, names and ages to telephone numbers and employment data, Son told Reuters.

Regulator the Korea Communications Standards Commission said it had been processing an Aug. 14 takedown request from police before the site went offline on Tuesday.

A Seoul university student was found dead early in September following weeks of harassment by strangers after the website featured his photograph and details, police said.

Those behind the website, set up in March, have yet to be identified, despite police arrests of more than 100 suspects in the blackmail ring, including a 24-year-old accused of having founded it.

A message on the website said it existed to serve the public by bringing down social judgment on sex crime suspects despite lenient legal punishment.

Psychiatry professor Chae Jeong-ho said he received hundreds of expletive-laden texts and calls from strangers after he figured on the site.

Police cleared Chae, who works at the Catholic University of Korea in Seoul, but the experience took a toll.

"It would have been easier to heal if I had been beaten by a known suspect, but I felt helpless, as there is no way to tell who is behind this in the cyber world," Chae told Reuters.

REGION ? After 18 months of allegedly exchanging messages online with a 14-year-old child, a Leucadia bagel store owner agreed to meet the youth in person.

But when Steve Amster arrived at the parking lot near a Menchie?s Frozen Yogurt on September 11 in Oceanside, he was instead met by a man holding a video camera asking him what he was doing there ? a question Amster didn?t stick around long enough to answer.

The confrontation caught on camera was one of the latest videos released by Ghost, an online vigilante who targets sexual predators in San Diego County.

Since 2018, Ghost and his crew, known as Creep Catcher (CC) Unit, have posted 155 videos of individuals caught on video attempting to meet minors for sex in several North County cities, including Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Vista and Escondido, in addition to nearby cities of Murrieta, San Clemente and Los Angeles.

?I?ve always wondered how many of these creeps live in the area and I wanted to make a change,? Ghost told The Coast News. ?I started looking online where these people troll the internet. It?s crazy how many (sexual predators) there are. It?s ridiculous.?

Ghost?s strategy is to create decoy accounts in online chat rooms by using profile pictures of adults who look like underage teens, but who aren?t actually minors.

Once the profile is created and the trap is set, Ghost waits for someone to initiate contact.

?Every person I?ve caught, they?ve contacted me first,? Ghost said. ?I always say, ?I hope you don?t mind, I?m 13.? If they are fine with the age, then I continue talking with them. (Eventually), they start talking about sexual stuff and asking for nude photos.?

If a perpetrator asks to meet the decoy minor, Ghost will arrive at the location with his camera rolling and a couple of friends for protection. After realizing they?ve been hoodwinked, the predator typically attempts to flee.

But there is no escaping the internet.

When Ghost first started, he frequently contacted the police, and sometimes law enforcement took a report. In most cases, that was it.

?I stopped calling the police,? Ghost said. ?Now, I just upload the video and if the police take an interest, they contact me.?

    And they did.

During a four-day sting operation this past June in Los Angeles, CC Unit released a video of a disturbing capture ? teacher John Seura of Will Rogers Continuation High School.

After uploading the video, Ghost said he was contacted by the Los Angeles Police Department?s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, requesting chat logs and videos of his interactions.

Seura was later arrested in late July and charged with a felony, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department website, but it remains unclear if his arrest was related to Ghost?s sting operation.

In North County, a youth ministry coordinator at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish was suspended and later moved out of the area following the release of a damaging CC Unit video.

Toney Renteria, a former Fallbrook resident, was accused of having inappropriate conversations with a 14-year-old boy and attempting to meet him for a sexual encounter at a Vista grocery store.

Instead, Renteria was introduced to Ghost and his team, who captured the entire interaction on video.

?You never know who you are going to catch,? Ghost said. ?These are people who seem like completely normal human beings, average Joes, working 9-to-5 jobs, but they are creeps. You just don?t know who someone is. You can?t judge a book by its cover.?

    The ?big monster?
While the efforts of civilian vigilantes like Ghost and CC Unit have helped expose online sexual predators in the region, the business of human trafficking is booming, with profit margins rivaling those of illegal drug sales.

In a 2016 report by Dr. Ami Carpenter, professor at the University of San Diego, and Dr. Jaime Gates, cultural anthropologist at Point Loma Nazarene University, the illicit sex economy in San Diego County was estimated to be an $800 million enterprise in 2013, which the report suggested was an undervaluation. The study also found that sex-trafficking facilitators make an average of $670,625 per year.

According to District Attorney Summer Stephan, since COVID-19 swept across the region, San Diego County has seen an uptick in human-trafficking activities involving minors ? the average age of a victim being approximately 16-years old.

Since many children have been distance learning on computers and tablets due to the current health crisis, their risk of interacting with online predators has grown significantly.

This year, National Center for Missing Exploited Children reported the number of ?online enticement? reports from January 1 to June 30 had increased by 93% compared with last year?s national statistics over the same time period.

In a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom, Stephan noted that reports of child predatory behavior to the San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled during school closures.

According to Stephan, the number of cyber tips more than tripled in April 2020, the first full month of school closures, and quadrupled in May 2020, the second month of all school closures in San Diego County.

The FBI has previously named San Diego as a high-intensity child prostitution area, with Oceanside and Escondido holding the highest concentration of human-trafficking activity in the county.

Social media websites and messaging apps, such as Instagram, Facebook, Kik and Snapchat, remain notorious hunting grounds for online predators.

?From everything I?ve seen, I really think that social media websites should not be used at all by younger children,? Stephan told The Coast News. ?I think they are a recipe for trouble. We know predators roam Instagram looking for statements by a child that they are lonely or mad at a friend or parent, and they use that as their opportunity.?

Stephan said that unlike other crimes that are localized to a particular region, human trafficking travels, which increases the difficulty of locating victims and arresting facilitators. Large events attracting out-of-town visitors invariably raises the demand for prostitution.

?For ComicCon, we would see a lot of visitors from out of town, which is an opportunity for traffickers to sell human beings for sex,? Stephan said. ?A victim might reside in North County but the place she is being sold for sex could be in Mission Valley. That is the big monster to overcome human trafficking.?

Due to this vast and transient criminal network, a multi-agency task force was assembled in the region, which consists of law enforcement investigators from around the county and state, including the California Department of Justice, San Diego Police Department, San Diego County Sheriff?s Department and San Diego County District Attorney?s office, with multiple substations across the county.

The task force also includes Willow, a two-year-old English Labrador and the first electronic scent detection dog in Southern California trained to sniff out cellphones, thumb drives, memory cards and other electronic data storage devices.

When it comes to civilian vigilante groups, Stephan said she understands the frustration within the community but asks that concerned residents allow police and task forces to handle these crimes.

?We understand people want to help us. But we don?t want civilians to do their own investigations because it can do harm to them and compromise cases,? Stephan said.

    Local resources for victims
Once a child has been rescued from sexual slavery, the road to recovery can be difficult, but there are organizations offering services and resources to help them reintegrate back into society.

Girls Rising Above Child Exploitation (GRACE) in San Diego is a volunteer-based organization that helps victims of child exploitation receive access to food, shelter, clothing, toiletries and therapeutic services. Leah Watson, founder and president of GRACE, is a survivor of abuse who has used her personal experience to help others cope with the trauma associated with exploitation.

Since 2017, the nonprofit has relied on volunteers and community advocates to educate and mentor exploited, trafficked and at-risk youth. GRACE offers several programs, including weekly therapeutic art sessions, job skill training and resume writing services and outdoor field trips.

By next year, the organization hopes to launch a new housing program, in partnership with different churches, asking families to receive training and host a youth to live at their home.

Watson said one of the ways to combat sexual slavery is simple ? don?t support it.

?It?s a basic business concept, supply and demand,? Watson said. ?Stop buying. If people weren?t buying sex, it wouldn?t exist.?

Watson said she always tells parents to monitor their child?s social media access on their home computers and cell phones.

?If your child has a smartphone, a trafficker has direct access to them,? Watson said. ?There is so much hazard online. And it doesn?t take much. Traffickers are smart, they?re businessmen and they know how to lure, groom and appeal to troubled youth.?

A former Mission principal claims he was just doing “research” into Creep Catchers when he was filmed attempting to meet up with two underage girls at an Abbotsford mall in 2016.

The province’s Teacher Regulation Branch panel did not accept his explanation, and determined his conduct was unbecoming for a teacher.

“The Respondent’s explanation that his conduct was at best innocent personal research and at worst, flirtatious texting as part of role playing, is not plausible,” the panel found. “The Commissioner’s evidence is clear, convincing and cogent.”

Jason Alan Obert, formerly the principal of Windebank Elementary School, said the reason he was texting and attempting to meet up with two “girls” was research for a fictional or non-fictional book about Creep Catchers.

Creep Catchers is a vigilante group which creates fictitious online personas to attempt to lure predatory men into exposing themselves in meet-ups with minors.

Obert was filmed in one such sting by the group in October 2016 after he began texting two personas named Sara and Hannah on the website Skout. They told him they were aged 15 and 14, respectively.

These characters were actually the creation of Chelsea Bullon, the founder of the Fraser Valley Creep Catchers.

Throughout the month-long messaging prior to the meet-up, Obert offered liquor and marijuana, repeatedly asked for pictures, asked personal and sexualized questions, and attempted to meet in person with them a total of three times.

Chat logs of these conversations, which occurred through the TextNow app as well as Skout, were presented to the panel.

Obert claims that he knew the recipients of his messages were not, in fact, minors and he was communicating with a member of the Creep Catchers.

He claimed that messages were deleted by Bullon which showed both parties knew they were “role playing,” but provided no evidence to support his claim.

In the text messages provided as evidence to the panel, Obert is clearly nervous about the meetings at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, and the authenticity of who he was texting.

“Ya ur a cop or something; Why would u call a cab just wait til Hannah’s Mom comes,” he said, during a failed meet-up attempt on Oct. 2 at the mall.

“Lol not sure u two are real; Lol; Both so shy about pics lol,” he says in a message the following day.

After Obert was eventually filmed and confronted by the Creep Catchers on Oct. 14 at the same mall, he fled, and the video was posted to YouTube a few days later.

The Abbotsford Police Department began investigating the incident soon after.

The video came to the attention of the Mission School District after a vice-principal showed it to Mission school district superintendent Angus Wilson.

Obert was immediately suspended and replaced as principal of Windebank Elementary after Wilson held emergency meetings with school trustees and parents. Obert was fired by the district in December 2016.

The Abbotsford Police’s investigation led to a charge of child luring in November 2016. The charges were eventually stayed in the summer of 2017, and Obert was instead placed on a nine-month recognizance with strict conditions.

As proof of his intention to write a book about the Creep Catchers, Obert provided the regulators copies of notes he claims he took during a conversation with a Surrey Creep Catchers member, some book outlines and draft stories.

The panel responded there was no way to confirm the dates on these documents.

The Teacher Regulation Branch is still deciding what Obert’s guilty penalty will be and when it will be handed down.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The sheriff of Sandusky County, Christopher Hilton, as well as several other law enforcement agencies, are demanding a group from northern Ohio to stop their form of “vigilante justice” towards suspected child sex predators.

The Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office issued an open letter warning members of the Dads Against Predators Inc., or DAP, could face prosecution if they do not stop entrapping and recording men they claim are targeting minors on the internet.

Sheriff Hilton said the group has shared numerous videos online showing themselves encountering and exposing individuals as alleged child predators.

“DAP does this acting as, or pretending to be, a child on various chat websites. After luring individuals to meet with them at a location for a potential sexual encounter, DAP records and publishes the chat communication, as well as the face-to-face encounter with the individual, on their Facebook page and YouTube channel.”

[ Read the full letter here ]

The sheriff offered praise to DAP for raising awareness regarding the dangers of children accessing internet chat sites, but said the group is hindering the ability for law enforcement and prosecutors to criminally charge those individuals.

“Local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors of Sandusky County and the City of Fremont cannot and will not sit back anymore and watch as DAP continues to parade its form of vigilante justice.”

If DAP continues, individuals of the group could face criminal charge, Sheriff Hilton added.

“DAP’s careless and reckless regard for law and order and due process has resulted in the loss of life, and the situation has gotten out of hand.”

According to 19 News affiliate WTVG, two individuals died by suicide after DAP shared videos of them online. A third death is being investigated as a suicide and involves a man who died a day after his information was shared publicly.

Update Dads against Predators are under investigation after 3 people committed suicide because the vigilante group made rape allegations on 3 of their targets.

FREMONT, Ohio (WTVG) - A vigilante group that records videos of men allegedly looking to meet minors for sex is being warned by multiple law enforcement agencies to stop what they’re doing or face potential prosecution after two suicides.

The group, the Fremont chapter of Dads Against Predators, was specifically targeted in a letter signed by the Sandusky County Sheriff and County Prosecutor, as well as multiple police chiefs in the county.

“Local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors of Sandusky County and the City of Fremont cannot and will not sit back anymore and watch as DAP continues to parade its form of vigilante justice,” the letter, released Monday, read. “Its intentions may be well-intended, but their methods and outcomes are improper and unacceptable. The ‘exposed’ individuals may be exactly what DAP says they are, but they also may not be. DAP’s careless and reckless regard for law and order and due process has resulted in the loss of life, and the situation has gotten out of hand.”

Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said “loss of life” was a reference to two individuals who died by suicide after DAP posted videos of them on YouTube, and third suspected suicide, where a man died a day after his DAP video was posted online.

The letter lists multiple actions law enforcement has taken in 2020 to combat sex offenders, including dozens of arrests.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- Las Vegas police issued a warning to the community Thursday warning of a spike in "vigilante" justice cases related to child predators online.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they are investigating several incidences where people are posing as minors to lure would-be child predators and catch them in the act, the department said in a release Thursday.

Alleged offenders are meeting at designated locations and are confronted about their online exchanges with minors. Video recordings are then posted, garnering thousands of online views. Some of the interactions have turned violent, police said.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious behavior and to "not take matters in their own hands."

The community can report any activity to LVMPD Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force at 702-828-3111. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 702-385-5555.

BAY CITY, MI — A Bay City man whose vigilante videos on YouTube have gone viral has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor stemming from a confrontation with someone who was recording video of him. He eventually could have the charge dismissed under a sentencing agreement.

Mark A. Hernandez, 28, on Monday, Oct. 5, appeared before Bay County District Judge Mark E. Janer and pleaded guilty to one count of assault and battery. The charge is a one-year misdemeanor.

In exchange for his plea, the prosecution agreed to dismiss a misdemeanor count of malicious destruction of personal property between $200 and $1,000. The prosecution also agreed Hernandez would receive a delayed sentence, meaning that he will effectively be placed on probation for a period of time. If he’s successful on the delay and complies with its terms, the charge to which he pleaded will be dismissed.

Since Feb. 1, Hernandez has posted numerous videos on YouTube of him confronting adult men who he says expected to meet a juvenile boy or girl, akin to the popular Dateline TV segment “To Catch a Predator.” The videos also feature chat logs Hernandez says are of him posing as a minor in discussions with the men as they talk about where and when to meet up.

The charge to which Hernandez pleaded to stems from an incident that occurred about 11:40 a.m. on April 11. At that time, police responded to a dispute in Bay City when a man alleged Hernandez had smashed his wife’s phone as the couple was recording images of Hernandez.

The confrontation followed Hernandez recording a meeting with the couple’s son and posting it on YouTube and social media, they said. The son is not charged with a crime, which is why MLive is not naming him or his parents.

Hernandez told police he approached the truck and recognized its occupants, having previously gone to their house to speak with the father about his son, police reports state.

Judge Janer is to sentence Hernandez at 9:45 a.m. on Nov. 5.

The Leola man who made a name for himself as a self-styled vigilante by confronting would-be child predators and shaming them on social media has been charged with assaulting and restraining a woman at his home Wednesday.

Justin Perry, 34, grabbed the woman around noon Wednesday, causing her to fall into a coffee table and cut the back of her head, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by West Earl Township police.

Perry also shoved her onto a bed, straddled her, poked her in the head and head-butted her in the rear of the head, according to the affidavit, and blocked her from leaving the room four or five times.

The woman called for emergency medical services and was treated, but declined to be taken to a hospital. Perry fled after another household member confronted him, police said. He turned himself in Thursday after police issued a warrant for him.

Perry is free on $7,500 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday before New Holland District Judge Jonathan Heisse.

Perry referred questions to his attorney, Steven Breit.

"There are two sides to every story," Breit said. "We potentially have evidence to show she had motivation behind this. She flat-out told him, 'I can say what I want and they'll believe me.'"

He was in his 20s, looking to have sex with a 15-year-old girl he?d met on a dating app. He arrived at their meeting spot carrying a 15-pack of Miller Lite and had condoms.

Professionally, Perry works as a line cook ? but only part-time, to give him time to care for his father, Arnold, 75, who has dementia. His mother, Barbara, died in January.

People also have delved into his past; he?s had convictions for theft, forgery, DUI and marijuana possession.

Perry said those days are behind him.

Still, he said, ?I didn?t expect any of this.?

The in-person encounters have led to criminal charges for several of the men in his videos, but also for himself: A child pornography charge was filed in August 2018, but dropped a week later.

Perry said he didn't have child pornography and he cooperated with investigators. His phone and computer were seized, but returned. Prosecutors declined to say why the charge was dropped.

Perry said he thinks the charge was brought about by someone upset at his vigilante activities.

Justin Perry thumbs through messages on his 'predator phone,' which he uses to lure in child predators, Friday, November 29, 2019. Perry has spent the better part of the last two years luring in child predators through social media and then exposing them via Facebook live when they show up to meet who they believe is an underage girl. He posts all his videos on his Facebook page, Mr. 17540, which has more than 46,000 followers.

    The ?Predator Phone?
Perry estimated he?s interacted with thousands of men using a spare cellphone he?s dubbed the ?Predator Phone.?

?Now, some of these guys really are just guys looking for women. You tell them you're 15 ... boom, see you later? ? they?re not interested, he said.

?There has to be sexual intent. Because it?s not illegal to show up and meet a 15-year-old. There has to be something sexual in the conversation, and it has to start with them.?

About half the time, he said, the person is interested in sex, at least to a degree.

?I?ll talk to them for a little bit, then I'll tell them, ?Hey, I?m 15.? If they want to continue the conversation or not, that?s on them. A lot of them will ask for pictures,? he said. Naked, or in underwear.

He doesn?t send pictures, but he?ll ask if the man wants to send one.

?I don?t describe what kind of picture. Any kind,? he said.

Most often, it?s an inappropriate picture, Perry said.

Perry tried posing as a teenage boy a few times early on, he said, but too many men sent pictures he found too graphic. (No one has sent him child pornography, he said; if that happened, he would call police.)

Most of the time, things don?t pan out. The man might get cold feet, or a meeting can?t be arranged. There are many no-shows.

It?s like fishing: A lot of casting. But every now and then, a fish will take the bait.

No one, however, has realized they?re talking to a man posing as a child, he said.

Sometimes, Perry arranges to meet at a nearby convenience store, but he?s traveled to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the farthest he's gone is to Ocean City, Maryland, during senior week.

That encounter led to the man being charged with violating Megan?s Law.

Perry?s method follows a format: He or his adult nephew drive to a meeting spot while Perry tells viewers about the target.

Once he confirms his target, he approaches and says he's the 15-year-old girl.

Perry launches into the men, often in profanity-laden, accusatory rants. The men seem dumbfounded, fumbling through protestations of innocence.

After several encounters, Perry hit upon his catchphrase: Remember my face, because everybody?s gonna remember yours.

He just blurted it out. Now, a slight variant is on T-shirts he sells.

He often ends his Facebook Live encounters by telling the person: ?Get the (expletive) out of my city."

    Little time, money involved
Perhaps surprisingly, Perry said no one has threatened him. He does wear a bulletproof vest, which was a gift from a fan. Along the way, he also upgraded from holding his phone to record encounters to wearing a used GoPro, another gift. The GoPro is a video camera mounted on his body to show the encounter from his point of view.

Thousands of people have watched his videos, with viewers commenting locally, from other states and even from the United Kingdom. Many of his top fans are women.

His hobby doesn?t take much time or cost much money.

?Think of how much time people spend on their smartphones a day. Instead of me doing that, it?s just me on the Predator Phone? searching for men looking for underage girls, he said.

His cost is basically gas. He tied his furthest trips to other activities.

If he could, Perry said, he?d somehow make a career out of what he does.

That?s not possible, in part because of the time he spends caring for his father.

?My dad?s my best friend. My everything,? he said.

His father recently had a leg amputation and some other health problems that have forced Perry to scale his activities back a bit.

    Justin Perry Mr. 17540
Justin Perry, who's better known online as Mr. 17540, has spent the better part of the past two years luring in child predators through social media and then exposing them via Facebook live, when they show up to meet who they believe is an underage girl. While speaking about his method and his thoughts behind it on Friday, November 29, 2019, Perry said if he could make it a full-time job he would. His Facebook page has more than 46,000 followers.

?My job is easy. (The police are) the ones that got to sit there and do all the paperwork ... I?m creating work for them, but at the same time, you can?t really complain about what I?m doing if I'm doing it the right way," he said.

Local law enforcement is aware of Perry.

The Lancaster County District Attorney?s office used one his videos to help convict Thomas Wise, 37, of Columbia, of solicitation to commit statutory sexual assault and related crimes in September.

Wise was sentenced to parole for about nine months, probation for five years and must register under Megan's Law for the rest of his life.

While the office credited ?citizen?s work? in helping win the conviction, it would prefer Perry contact police instead of confronting people.
