Search Underway for Missing Marine Recruit in Boston

    https://www.necn.com/news/new-englan...471299034.html

The case of a missing Marine recruit has led multiple law enforcement agencies to Stony Brook Reservation in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood Friday.

Boston police say they are on the scene, along with state police and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

NCIS investigators joined state and local law enforcement in their search for missing Marine recruit Joseph Brancato, and that Friday's search is "just one ongoing investigative step looking for clues," according to an NCIS spokesperson.

His aunt, Dawn Buccieri, says he went to live with a marine recruiter in hopes of getting ready for the armed services, but after moving into the Mendelssohn Street home, Brancato disappeared in November.

Buccieri made an emotional plea Friday, hoping her nephew is still alive.

She says her nephew's move into the recruiter's house didn?t sit right with any of his family.

"I guess the recruiter said, 'I can help you out. You can live in my basement.'"

All of Brancato's younger friends from Winthrop would say there?s something wrong. Something doesn?t seem right.

Brancato had always wanted to be a marine, but the family wasn?t so sure of him living with the recruiter.

His aunt told us the recruiter only spoke to them through text messages.

She says they knew something was wrong when the recruiter would keep pushing back Brancato's training start date.

Then, in November, they lost contact with Brancato.

"He?s like that big teddy bear that pretends to be a hard guy but he needs to speak with his grandmother, Mom, and Dad."

The Roslindale Marine Corps Recruiting Office is closed, with evidence tape covering the lock.

Missing Boston recruit's mentor arrested on 'unrelated' charges

A recruiter for the Marines in Boston has been arrested and is being held in South Carolina, but officials say the charges are unrelated to the search for a missing recruit.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant Frank Lipka is in custody in Charleston and was the only Marine recruiter at the Roslindale office where missing recruit Joey Brancato was being processed.

Brancato, who was training to pass the test for the Marines, disappeared on Nov. 18. In the weeks since, Boston police and NCIS have searched for him extensively.

Ed Bruce, a spokesperson with the NCIS, told Boston 25 News Lipka’s charges are unrelated to the investigation, but did not say what the charges were.

Authorities have detailed charges faced by a Marine recruiter from Roslindale who was taken into military custody earlier this month.

Gunnery Sergeant Frank Lipka remains in military custody for drunken driving, absence without authorization from work, and an altercation with two other Marines in his unit, Captain Gerard R. Farao said in an e-mail Friday.

Lipka, Farao said, was escorted by Marines to the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston, S.C., where he was taken into custody Feb. 1.

Recruiter Due In Court On Charges Unrelated To Missing Marine

The former roommate of a missing Marine recruit was taken into custody by Boston Police and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Lipka has been in military custody in South Carolina for an unrelated case. Now Brancato’s family says Lipka is back in Boston and has been arrested by Boston Police.

Police Commissioner William Evans said Lipka is facing a charge, but it is from a different case than Brancato’s disappearance.

“He’s the individual I think they’ve been looking at,” Evans said on Sunday. “I think they’re charging him with an old case where he pointed a gun at someone. Assault by means is what I believe they’re charging him with.”

Body found next to I-95 believed to be missing Marine recruit

5 Investigates has learned that a body discovered in a wooded area next to Interstate 95 southbound on Wednesday is believed to be Joey Brancato, a Marine recruit missing since late last year.

A motorist who pulled over to help a woman with car trouble along the highway in Canton spotted the remains.
On Monday, prosecutors publicly called former Marine recruiter Frank Lipka a “person of interest” in Brancato’s disappearance.

5 Investigates has learned that a body discovered in a wooded area next to Interstate 95 southbound on Wednesday has been identified as Joey Brancato, a Marine recruit missing since late last year.

Brancato's family was notified Thursday of the positive identification.

"My heart is broken," said his mother, Kim LeBaron-Brancato. "I don't know how I'll go on without him. He was a good kid. He wanted to be a Marine. That's all he wanted to do. He wanted to fight for his country but instead he's found dead on the side of a road."

"An autopsy performed today did not immediately establish cause or manner of death," wrote Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey. "Cause and manner of death remain undetermined and under investigation pending further testing."
