Suspected killer pawned gun, boarded plane as search for victim began

Orange County deputies search for person of interest in missing woman's death

File video: Orange County investigators are looking for a person of interest in connection with the death of a missing woman

Two days after Vanessa Cocly was last seen by her family ? and hours before they reported her missing ? her ex-boyfriend was at Cash America Pawn on Orange Blossom Trail selling a .380 caliber handgun, court records show.

The next day, April 3, Christian Ruben Valentin Penchi boarded a JetBlue flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Days later, Cocly?s body was found inside his condo, with a gunshot wound to her head, authorities said.

Valentin Penchi, 32, was booked into the Orange County Jail on a first-degree murder charge Thursday night. He had been arrested on a warrant in Puerto Rico, where authorities said he fled after killing his ex.

Meanwhile, an affidavit filed in circuit court revealed new details about the killing, Cocly?s cause of death and a timeline of her disappearance.

Cocly, 23, left home about 8 p.m. March 31, telling her family she?d be back in a little while, the affidavit said. When she didn?t return, they used her Google Services account to geo-locate her phone. Its location: 7900 S. Orange Blossom Trail, where Valentin Penchi lived.

The family ?did not think anything of it at first,? knowing her ex lived there, the affidavit said. Her phone stopped broadcasting just before midnight.

Her mother reported Cocly missing about 5:20 p.m. April 2. The family told a detective they were extremely concerned that Cocly?s phone, which she ?lives? on, hadn?t turned back on. She also hadn?t shown up for training at her new job at Disney, or for Easter dinner.

On April 4, about 26 hours after Valentin Penchi boarded his flight, Cocly?s family found her car at the Panda Express near his condo, the affidavit said. Inside, investigators found a backpack with Cocly?s school books. In the trunk, they found her purse and credit cards.

The next day, Valentin Penchi?s brother reported him missing, not having heard from him in days. He feared his brother was depressed about the breakup, a custody battle with an ex-wife over his children and having lost his job March 23, the affidavit said.

Investigators said Valentin Penchi had been trying to rekindle his relationship with Cocly, but she wasn?t interested.

Late April 5, a judge signed a warrant to search Valentin Penchi?s condo. Investigators found her body in the bathroom. The next day, Valentin Penchi was arrested in Puerto Rico. He is being held without bail.

Valentin Penchi also faces charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Authorities say he had been stealing and pawning floor polishers from Omicron Granite on John Young Parkway, where he worked as a van driver before he was fired in late March.

According to the affidavit, he was fired for poor performance and failing to show up for work, in addition to the suspected thefts.

I would just like to add that it's taken until now for me to realise that when I read "condo" in a story from the U.S, I should maybe envision squalid, run down blocks of flats & not upmarket apartments. TIL

This is like the Aus jumper vs U.S jumper thing all over again - I might've been reading books for decades with the wrong picture in my head

Condos here can run the gambit from multi-million dollar showstoppers to real pieces of crap that you would be afraid to go in to. Back during the last housing run up (before the 2008 recession) a lot of apartment complexes were made into condos, and a lot of them were really seedy. Florida has a ton of those.

Basically, with a condo you own the unit but not the land under it. With a townhouse or duplex/triplex type house you own the land and the unit.
