Florida teen who tried to flee to Canada charged with second-degree murder in shooting death of grandmother

A Florida teen accused of killing his grandmother was held without bond on Wednesday after being charged as an adult with second-degree murder.

Logan Mott, 15, appeared in the Jacksonville courtroom one day after he was extradited from upstate New York.

Investigators say Mott shot 53-year-old Kristina French and buried her in the backyard of his Neptune Beach home. He then fled in her vehicle, according to an auto theft arrest warrant.

It is believed that Mott used his grandmother's debit card at an ATM on Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania, according to the station. In addition, "a vehicle matching the victim's car" was seen leaving the area.

The judge denied bond for 15-year-old Logan Mott. Mott remains in isolation in the Duval County Jail.

“When you have a juvenile, you don’t want that juvenile to have other inmates who are potentially dangerous or angry to have contact with them, so you do typically keep them in isolation away from the other prisoners,” Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Mott is "housed alone in an isolation cell for his safety."

JSO said "it’s not in the juvenile wing" and it’s "always subject to change for various reasons."

Officers said Mott does get three meals a day, use of the phone, visitation and rec time, like regular inmates.

But, according to police, Mott won’t get time in the "dorm" environment with other inmates.

“He will be allowed to go out, he’ll have communication with his lawyers, or perhaps his family,” Carson said.

Mott’s father is a jail corrections officer with JSO.

“The father will be reassigned so he won’t have regular contact,” Mott’s attorney, public defender Charlie Cofer, said. “That’s normal protocol here.”

As previously reported by First Coast News, Mott is being represented by a public defender. He is currently in an isolation cell for what is described as his own safety. He is expected to remain there until he is sentenced. His mother penned a letter regarding his medical treatment in jail. She says that his health, which includes diabetes, is deteriorating in his current prison conditions. “He says he is freezing which is a clear sign his insulin is not being controlled properly,” the mom wrote. “This is a serious medical issue and I will have no choice but to run it up the chain if I hear nothing back.”

She told First Coast News that she wants him in a juvenile facility. "Logan should be in a smaller juvenile facility where his medical needs can be monitored closely and he will have opportunity to interact. There's no need for 'protective custody' at a juvenile facility.” Mott's attorney also issued a statement about this: “I have previously discussed Logan’s medical issues with her. As the result of those conversations, I have had numerous discussions with the Director of the Jails about monitoring and handling Logan’s condition. I have also been meeting regularly with Logan, most recently yesterday evening. Due to Federal privacy laws, it would be inappropriate for me to discuss the actual monitoring and treatment for his condition.”

Mott is being charged as an adult which is why he is at Duval County jail.

Crime Analyst Mark Baughman, formerly JSO, says the uncomfortable cold conditions are often purposeful.

“Duval County is not meant to be the Holiday Inn or the Marriott. It’s still jail,” she said. “It’s for a reason, I’ve been in cold hospitals, it’s to stop the transmission of illnesses like the flu virus, they’re taking the same approach. I’ve been in Duval County jail many times, I know it is a strict, secure facility.”http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/c...jail/498265619

Supposedly this is Logan's IG: https://www.instagram.com/gopnik_wor...s_radio/?hl=en

This kid had issues and was trying to tell people...guess no one wanted to listen. I have no sympathy for him, but it does make me wonder what would have happened if someone had listened. All this was posted right before the murder.

Wow, I was not expecting him to be obsessed with communism. One post asking for donations for the 'GOPNIK Radio' has the name Dmitri Moskovin. Someone else or alias? There is also this comment: 'dakota_geiman @gopnik_world_red_news_radio it's funny that you were preaching about feminism and now are dealing with false rape charges ' Are we sure it's him?

    Some captions from the pictures:

I am my fathers bastard son, and all I ever get from him is how worthless I am, and how all I do is cost him time and money. I don't have a family. I don't have anything to put my heart into. That's what a bad father does, is make his son feel worthless.
gopnik_world_red_news_radioThe war for freedom, for liberty, for revenge of the lost under corruption, has begun.
Comrades. The question that I ask is what are you going to do with it, the war against the rich and few will be long, hard, and grueling, but from it we will rise!!, from the ashes of the bourgeois will rise the society that we as the people will create!!!
Imagine a world without war, without poverty, without corruption and violence, a world that we helped build, that is successful technologically and strong in morales, imagine my friends this world, where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness!!! Comrades let us all unite, this is our time, begin storing ammunition, begin making cocktails, begin storing weapons and armor, this is the true war, the true war to end all wars.
Comrades!!!!! Beat down your opponents and destroy their lives, beat them in the streets and show the rest of the world this is our time, and theirs as well!! Spread the word of GOPNIK, tell that that this is our time to rise, and build a world that will save it for generations, comrades in the name of communism let us all UNITE!!!!!!
The point where you begin to listen to nothing but yourself, and follow only your morales and your thoughts, is the greatest moment of a revolutionaries life, Why? You may ask,
Because after that, the only thing left to fight for is freedom, and if you have nothing but that.
You are dangerous because you are unbreakable.
Stay true comrades, we will win
    Whatever it takes

    One more:

I never chose to be solitary, I never chose to be the one weird kid.

I've lived a short life I'll be honest, but even though it's been short I've lived and seen a lot.

I leaned the hard way people in general are cold hearted, and like fear they will use you.

I've been too kind to people and been taken advantage of. My kindness is not a weakness, but to be honest I feel weak, I feel used and violated, I've trusted people and they betrayed me.
And it's wrong that I grew up the way I did but it's what I have, I don't trust people easily, I can't, it's hard knowing that you may be betrayed again and again and again, and ik it's cynical of me to say that, which in turn makes me a hypocrite.

But it's true, I've been nothin but abused, forgetted, and taken advantage of in my life, this Instagram is the only place I have a voice.

Don't think the untalkative kid is bad, he's just been through more than you.

Don't let him be alone, please don't let him grow up like me.

I am not 100% sure, but it's out there in various places as being his. Here are the comments from the very first post:

gopnik_world_red_news_radioComrades, remember life isn't about riches and glory, it's about helping one another and building a story of your life, be the man in the bar that has all the amazing stories, not the lonely rich man in the cabin with nothing but his wealth to speak with. Every second is a story, make your story worth reading. Life isn't about things, it's about us, and what we will do in our short time in this world to make our story's legendary.

I'm pretty sure it is. The pic of the man and little boy looks like him, to me.

Funny this thread got bumped ... I'll be in Neptune Beach in a couple of hours. And we'll be passing the high school where KJ died shortly. It's an MDS twofer!

I thought the same thing about the pic of the little boy...I think that's his dad, and to me he was trying to say something in that pic. But maybe I am just reaching, who knows.

    Enjoy your Florida vacay!

Friends: Logan Mott suicidal, accused of rape before grandma's killing

Evidence compiled in the case against the Neptune Beach teen accused of murdering his grandmother suggest he was suicidal, had a drinking problem and was recently accused of raping his ex-girlfriend.

Those details surfaced in court records made public Friday in the case of Logan Mott, the 15-year-old charged with second-degree murder in the November 2017 death of his grandmother, Kristina French.

Those details surfaced in court records made public Friday in the case of Logan Mott, the 15-year-old charged with second-degree murder in the November 2017 death of his grandmother, Kristina French.
An ex-girlfriend said her relationship with Mott soured after she noticed a “violent side of Logan,” saying he repeatedly mentioned wanting to “kill himself.” At one point, she said, he put a gun to his head.

Nothing seemed wrong when Mott and French had dinner with one of her co-workers Nov. 16. But the next day, the co-worker said, French was upset because she’d found Mott drunk at home.

A long-time friend of Mott’s and a school counselor said they spoke with Mott in the days leading up to French’s death. Both said he mentioned having broken up with his girlfriend, who accused him of rape.

The counselor told police Mott seemed happy when she saw him Nov. 15 and 16. She said he was home alone, but didn’t seem fazed because his father had left him a shotgun for protection.

Asked about French, the counselor was surprised to learn Mott’s grandmother was part of his life “because he has never talked about her previously,” according to a police report.

"Clearly at this stage, the state believes there is something that either snapped or a quick emotion that happened, which is why at this stage they haven't charged him with first-degree murder," Nichols said.
Check out the pictures at the end of the article linked above. WOW! This kid was fucked up! There was no way that "shallow grave" even covered her body either.

A Duval County judge has set a trial date for the Neptune Beach teen alleged to have killed his grandmother last year.

During a pretrial hearing Monday morning, Logan Mott's parents looked on as Judge Bruce Anderson Jr. set a trial date for May of 2019 for the murder of Kristina French.

Jury selection will begin May 13, 2019, and is anticipated to last around two weeks.

The Florida State Attorney’s Office released new evidence in the Logan Mott case Wednesday.

The evidence includes two videos and one audio recording believed to be of the teenager.

The video appears to show the teen with his face covered and speaking in a Russian accent.

In the video, the teen pretended to be the host of a Russian propaganda radio show.

“Comrades, it is your time. Rise with us. Let us overtake the bureaucracy that has corrupted America. Let us make America great again,” the teen said in the video.

Mott said he was the lead propagandist of the “UCOA” organization, which he said stands for United Comrades of America, and called for others to join.

“Join the UCOA and together we will be the voice for all those suffering,” Mott said.

Court documents revealed Mott told friends he was from Russia and wanted to go back. The report also said he said he was secretly a spy.

Jury selection in the case is July 22.
And then of course there is his IG posted above. Odd.

What a mess. This kid had obvious issues prior to killing his Grandmother, but apparently his parents were too busy to bother with him. I hope this over indulged child gets the book thrown at him as an adult. His parents must be so very proud. His mother makes me want to throw rocks with all of her complaining, threatening to go up the ladder and/or sue and in the same breath act as if her son did this in some out of body experience and should take no blame. With all of her blah blah blah how long did it take her to actually get to NY? This case really infuriates me deeply.

RIP Kristina - you didn't deserve this.

I agree with all of this. Neither parent seemed like they wanted him, and didn't seem to do their job. I hope they throw the book at him too!

    Sentencing trial just started

    https://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/l...rder/987679721

The teenager accused of killing his grandmother and burying her body in a shallow grave at his father's Neptune Beach home pleaded guilty to second degree murder.

The State and Defense have agreed to a 15 to 40 year sentencing range.

In October a judge will hear evidence from both sides before making a decision on how long Mott will spend in a Florida Prison.

Is it wrong that I don't think 40 years is long enough. There is just something about this case and this kid that really set me off.

No. This is somewhat local to me, and I was galled to think he could get out that soon. Even if he serves every day of his sentence, and he won't, it won't be enough in my opinion.

I don't have the words to describe how bullshitty I think this is.

    https://www.firstcoastnews.com/artic...4-d032e4810935

An accidental shooting. That’s how the clinical psychologist who testified Thursday described Logan Mott’s 2017 murder of his grandmother.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Marty Beyer was the sole witness called on the second day of the teenager’s sentencing hearing. She spent hours delving into both the trauma she said he endured and his remorse for his crime.

Logan Mott confessed that he shot and repeatedly stabbed his own grandmother 53-year-old Kristina French, in 2017, before burying her in the backyard.

For the first time on Thursday, we heard how Logan himself explained his crime.

Beyer explored the psychological impacts of Logan's parents' bitter divorce, his own breakup with his first girlfriend and his struggle to stay ahead of his diabetic illness, which resulted in multiple hospitalizations

She said depression and alcohol abuse were consequences of years of trauma.

"Had he been evaluated by a psychiatrist for his suicidal thinking, he would have been hospitalized, because he had a lethal plan and a means to commit suicide," Beyer said. "He loved his grandmother and under normal circumstances, he would have been protective, but he reacted in the moment without using moral thinking at all."

Beyer described the weeks before Logan murdered his grandmother as a “tragic slide downhill” but said the shooting itself was accidental and "reflexive." She said Logan was attempting to run away when he went to retrieve a gun from the room where his grandmother was sleeping. She said he was drunk, and his blood sugar was out of whack and he wasn’t thinking clearly. When his grandmother woke, he shot her.

Beyer described Logan recounting the crime, saying his face lost all color and he sobbed. She testified that he told her, "Burying her was the right thing to do the only thing I could do." He said he burned sage and removed her clothes because it would be "disrespectful" to bury her in bloody clothes.

"I put towels on her so she would be covered," Mott said. "I’ll never be able to forgive myself. I killed my own grandmother."

Circuit Judge Bruce Anderson seemed to be taking in Beyer's testimony, asking her several direct questions, and describing Logan Mott’s state of mind as “a perfect storm" and a "vicious cycle."

Judge Anderson has great discretion in choosing a prison sentence in the range of the plea agreement, between 15 and 45 years.
