Bruce Saunders (54) was pushed into a woodchipper and three of his friends have been arrested for his murder

A 54-year-old man has died after falling into a woodchipper on a rural property at Gympie, north of Brisbane.

Police said the accident happened as a group of men were clearing the driveway of a property off Tinana Road at Goomborian about 7:45pm on Sunday.

Acting Inspector Paul Algie said the man was working with two others to chip timber that was on the driveway of a friend's property.

"It was a private arrangement ? they were all friends who were assisting the person who owns the property ? they weren't actually there as contractors," he said.

He said police had spoken to the two friends the man was working with at the time.

"They're understandably extremely distressed over what's occurred," he said.

"They're very traumatised as a result of what's happened and police are assisting them obviously in any way we can in terms of ongoing welfare needs."

Forensic crash officers from Maryborough, the disaster victim identification unit from Brisbane, and Workplace Health and Safety officers from the Sunshine Coast were at the scene "still trying to ascertain" how it happened.

At this stage, the man's death is being treated as an accident.

"Everyone's obviously very distressed and we're still trying to work out the circumstances as to who has seen what," Acting Inspector Algie said.

He said police had been in touch with the family and they were being offered support.

    Circumstances 'absolutely shocking'

Acting Inspector Algie said support services were also being offered to the first responders and investigating officers.

"It's a horrendous thing to have to attend as a police officer ? any sudden death ? but these circumstances were absolutely shocking," he said.

Acting Inspector Algie said police could not yet say if the man had been operating the machinery unsafely or incorrectly.

"That's part of our investigation ? that's still ongoing," he said.

He urged the community to take care around machinery.

"There's very clear guidelines in terms of the paperwork that comes with these machines and also I noticed on the trailer there's a number of warning stickers in relation to how the machine should be used," he said.

"We just implore that people follow those instructions carefully, because obviously only a small mistake can obviously lead to a very, very horrible set of circumstances leading to someone passing away."

Police are preparing a report from the coroner.

Workplace Health and safety is also conducting an investigation, assisted by police.

Holy fuck. How terrifying for those who witnessed this. I'm seeing shades of Fargo but this appears to be an accident. What an awful exit from the world.

This happened around where I live a few years back. All you could see was blood sprayed everywhere. There were no body parts, nothing. It made me wonder what they did. Just buried the blood covered wood chips?

    Edit : nvm

Posting an article in place of my deleted post

This sounds absolutely brutal. Poor guy must've gone in arms or head first & then his friends tried to rescue him when they found him. It would've been beyond horrific. You'd never be able get the sights & smell out of your head. Fuuuck

Apparently there's a condolence thread from people who knew him on a fb news article, but I haven't searched for it yet

THE family of a man killed in an horrific accident when he fell into a woodchipper have spoken of their shock.

Bruce Saunders, 54, died instantly after he became trapped in the machine while mulching branches at a Goomboorian property, near Gympie, on Sunday evening, the News-Mail reports.

Mr Saunders' Bundaberg family and those who knew him took to the NewsMail Facebook page yesterday to pay their respects.

"It was very hard to wrap our heads around yesterday when we got the news about Uncle Bruce, it's a horrible incident," his niece Katrina Harrington said.

His sister, Susanne Saunders, said the shock death was "so hard to come to terms with".
Two friends, who were working alongside the 54-year-old, desperately tried to free him as he was pulled into the machine, but police said the man died instantly.

Gympie police acting inspector Paul Algie said the circumstances were horrific, but the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
"He was placing a tree into a tree shredder; he's become entangled within the machine and has died as a result of his injuries," he said.

"He was found by his two friends, they attempted to get him out of the machine and were unable to do so."

The scene was one of the most harrowing he had come across in 16 years of policing, Act Insp Algie said.

"I went out there this morning to speak to officers from Brisbane and I'd have to say it's one of the worst incident scenes I've ever seen," he said.

"There was nothing that could be done to save this gentleman."

He could not go into details about the man's injuries, but said specialist police unit Disaster Identification Squad had been brought in from Brisbane to identify the man.

The three men had been using a hired woodchipper with a 15-inch blade, for the third weekend in a row, to help clear a woman's driveway when the horrendous event unfolded at 7.40pm.

Act Insp Algie said police and emergency workers who responded to the emergency call were confronted with a very traumatic scene.

"(They were) obviously dealing with the distressed people that were there, but also trying to process what they uncovered there around the tree shredder," he said.

They would be offered support services, Act Insp Algie said, while Gympie police work with forensic crash police from Maryborough and Workplace Safety Queensland.

The machine has been impounded by police and subject to a mechanical inspection, with results from specialist engineers not expected for at least a week.

The death of a man killed in a woodchipping machine near Gympie last year is now being treated as suspicious, Queensland police say.

Police were called to a rural property in Tinana Road at Goomboorian on November 13 last year where they found the body of 54-year-old Bruce Saunders from Nambour in an industrial woodchipper.

Investigators described the scene as "horrific" but originally treated the incident as an accident.

Bruce Saunders smiles as he makes a peace sign with his right hand while standing under a tree, location unknown.

It had been believed the man had fallen into the machine as he was clearing trees off the driveway while working with two other men.

Police said after further investigation they were now treating the death as suspicious.

One neighbour Chris Parker said the men seemed "happy and content" and was shocked the incident was being investigated as a murder.

"Everyone seemed friendly enough ? just can't believe that it's not just an accident," Ms Parker said.

She said the three men had been working at the property as a favour to the homeowner.

Another neighbour who saw the men working, Keith Wilson, said he hoped police find out what happened to Mr Saunders.

"No-one deserves to go through something like that ? it would be a pretty awful way of going," he said.

On Sunday, detectives from the Gympie Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at the Tinana Road property and searched nearby land with the State Emergency Service.

During the searches, several items of interest were seized.

Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford said police were following a number of "promising" leads.

"Information we received during the course of our coronial investigations has led us to believe that the death is suspicious," he said.

"We have a number of detectives and police experts investigating this incident," he said.

"I urge anyone with any information that could assist us with our investigations to come forward, either by contacting Gympie detectives, Policelink or anonymously via Crimestoppers."

I'm wondering what was found at the scene that's made them to believe they have some promising leads.
It was mentioned they have, found several items of interest seized, and then from whatever was found around the wood chipper.

    Dear Diary,

Today I am going to throw Bruce into the woodchipper. No one will ever expect that it was me. Best plan ever. <3

Lol to all the replies I missed.

I got the impression part of him was still protruding from the chipper, so maybe the remaining body parts indicated blood flow ceased before he went in?

Love triangle twist in grisly woodchipper murder of country butcher.

POLICE are reportedly investigating a love triangle motive in the grisly murder of popular country butcher Bruce Saunders.

Mr Saunders, 54, died after he became trapped in a woodchipper while clearing a female friend?s property at Goomboorian near Gympie in Queensland last November.

When police were called to the ?horrific? scene after Mr Saunders was said to have fallen into the vegetation shredder, they initially thought it was a tragic accident.

It was around 7.40pm on Sunday, November 12, and Mr Saunders was mulching branches with the woodchipper when it was just beginning to get dark.

It was his third weekend helping out ?as an act of goodwill? to a woman who had been recently widowed.

Working with Mr Saunders on the property, which is around 200km north of Brisbane in a diverse farming district, were two other adult males.

Mr Saunders became caught in the woodchipper and died.

Gympie Police acting inspector Paul Algie later said after visiting the property that it was ?one of the worst incident scenes I?ve ever seen".

Inspector Algie said at the time the two male friends tried to save Mr Saunders after he became entangled in branches and was dragged into the woodchipper.

?It was actually quite horrific. His friends discovered him as he became entangled and attempted to extract him from the shredder and were unable to do so. So they?re obviously quite traumatised now,? Inspector Algie said at the time.

But after reinterviewing the two men and other witnesses, detectives raided the property earlier this month and seized ?items of interest?.

Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford announced last week that the death was now the subject of a homicide investigation and officers had several ?promising lines? of inquiries.

Insp Pettiford said Gympie detectives were contacted by people who knew Mr Saunders and had suggested his death might not have been an accident.

?We?ve now reached an informed conclusion that the death of Mr Saunders is suspicious,? he said.

Queensland Police told news.com.au that detectives were investigating several possible motives since declaring Mr Saunders? death was the result of foul play.

A love triangle was among the possible lines of inquiry.

Mr Saunders had operated a Bundaberg butchery, which had been in the family for two generations, until it closed in 2016.

He then moved south to the Sunshine Coast city of Nambour and following a relationship breakup had started a new romance.

Police say the woman who owned the property on which Mr Saunders was helping out when he died is not linked to his death.

If he was killed first in another way, this would be a good way to cover it up. Fuck the people who burn a body to try to cover a murder, this is the way to do it.

If it was just an accident, I still don't get it. I've used one of these 1000 times and I don't understand how it happens.

I was thinking the opposite- ?Why the heck would anyone murder someone in such an icky mess of a way??

But you?re right- it could conceal a hell of a lot of evidence.

    Still... ICK 🤮

The friends that were there aren't involved? They 'discovered him as he became entangled in branches and dragged into the machine.' How does that equal homicide? I mean, if he didn't get caught up by accident, was he forced? How was he forced, and by whom? What part of this makes the police believe it's murder?

    I'm so confused.

I'm also sleep deprived, which may contribute to my confusion 😂

There were witnesses, so maybe someone saw them arguing beforehand? Or maybe the two "friends" stories didn't match up.

I missed your update Evening Star, there's a little more info in this Vice article. Could be more in the Courier Mail article they reference but I'm paywalled out & the Courier Mail is THE WORST rwnj rag in QLD so I'm not signing up for their shite. The CM also has a more recent article titled "Woodchipper Death : Police Identify People of Interest" if anyone can be bothered getting past the paywall. Not sure if they actually name anyone, you'd think there'd be other newsp outlets reporting it by now if that was the case >

    https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/3...ikely-murdered

Last November, popular country butcher Bruce Saunders died when he fell into a large industrial woodchipper near Gympie, 200km north of Brisbane.

Police have now revealed the finding of more human remains belonging to Saunders, including new items of interest such as clothes and mobile phone fragments, and confirmed that the 54-year-old's death is being treated as a murder case, The Courier-Mail reports.

State Emergency Service (SES) workers were ordered to search the property yesterday by the Homicide Squad, which resulted in the new evidence. Existing evidence was also forensically examined.

This marks a u-turn in the investigation, which was initially believed to have been a tragic accident. The night he died, Saunders had been working with two male friends to help a local widow clear timber from her property, and it was thought he simply became entangled in the machine as he used it to mulch branches. (The widow is not implicated in the case.)

Paul Algie, Gympie Police acting inspector, said at the time that it was ?one of the worst incident scenes I?ve ever seen" during his 16-year career in the police force.

Police have re-interviewed the two friends working with Saunders the night he died, and a third (unnamed) person of interest. There has also been speculation that the death was driven by a love triangle involving a woman ? it's believed Saunders had recently started a new romance prior to his death. The machine was not found to be faulty, and all its safety functions were in tact, police said.

No charges have been laid so far.

Ex-girlfriend reportedly ?person of interest? in grisly woodchipper death of country butcher

A NEW twist in the ?horrific? death of a country butcher whose body went through an industrial woodchipper in Queensland.

POLICE are remaining tight-lipped about reports that the ex-girlfriend of a man who died following a horrific incident involving a woodchipper last year was now a person of interest in the case.

In November, Bruce Saunders? body entered an industrial woodchipper on a rural property in Gympie in Queensland.

Initially it was thought a tragic accident ended the 54-year-old Nambour man?s life. The Courier-Mail on Wednesday reported that Mr Saunders? 57-year-old former partner Sharon Graham was now a person of interest.

Two men who were with Mr Saunders when he died ? Greg Roser, 58, of Deception Bay and Peter Koenig, 61, of Gympie ? are also persons of interest, it had been reported.

Sharon Graham and Bruce Saunders, who died following an incident with a woodchipper, were once in a relationship.Source:News Corp Australia

It?s understood Ms Graham could be a major beneficiary of Mr Saunders? estate, reported the Courier-Mail .

The publication did not suggest the trio had any involvement in Mr Saunders? death, only that they were considered to have information which may be relevant to the case. Police have not confirmed the three as ?persons of interest?.

In recent months, Police and the SES have re-examined the country property where the death was discovered.

Previously police had reportedly investigated the possibility of a love triangle motive in the grisly murder of the popular country butcher.

Mr Saunders died after he became trapped in a woodchipper while clearing a female friend?s property at Goomboorian near Gympie.

It was around 7.40pm on Sunday, November 12, and Mr Saunders was mulching branches with the woodchipper when it was just beginning to get dark.

Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford announced in February that the death was now the subject of a homicide investigation and officers had several ?promising lines? of inquiries.

Insp Pettiford said Gympie detectives were contacted by people who knew Mr Saunders and had suggested his death might not have been an accident.

A love triangle was among the possible lines of inquiry.

On Wednesday, police told news.com.au that they couldn?t confirm the identities or the ages of people who might be persons on interest in the case.

They urged people with information on the death of Mr Saunders to contact Crimestoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersqld.com.au.

    Woodchipper death: ?We want answers?

The family of the much-loved Queensland butcher who suspiciously died in a woodchipper last year cannot understand why anyone would want to kill him. ?It was awful when it happened, even when we thought it was an accident?it was just awful on all of us,? Saunders's stepson Liam Rodgers, 19, tells WHO. ?But now that there?s a police investigation it?s so hard to think about. How could someone do that??

The crime scene in Goomboorian, Qld.

It?s the question at the heart of a Queensland Police probe.

In what at first appeared to be an accident on Nov. 12 last year, police said former Bundaberg butcher Bruce Saunders, 54, was killed after becoming trapped in an active industrial woodchipper on a property in Goomboorian, nearly 200km north of Brisbane, while helping two men clear a driveway for a recently widowed woman.

But since then police have launched a homicide investigation, with reports citing a possible love triangle as the motive for the murder of the affable butcher.

"He was loved," says Liam, who is the son of Saunders?s second wife, Bernadette Rodgers. ?If we walked down the street together we?d have to add an extra half-hour because everyone wanted to stop and say hi to him. Everyone liked Bruce, he always had a smile, he always lent a helping hand. He was so trusting.?

Police are investigating if that trusting nature led to his murder.

On the day of his death, Saunders, who sold a butcher?s business in Bundaberg in 2016 and relocated to Nambour on Queensland?s Sunshine Coast, had been working on the property as ?an act of goodwill,? police said.

The female property owner, who is not implicated in Saunders?s death, was planning to sell the home and the men had been doing a clean-up for her over three weekends.

At some point late on the Sunday of Nov. 12, Saunders somehow entered the machine, which has a 38cm blade, and died ?within a few seconds,? Gympie police acting inspector Paul Algie told The Gympie Times at the time.

A veteran cop, Algie called it ?one of the worst incident scenes I?ve ever seen.?

Still, it wasn?t considered a crime until police received a tip-off and have now ?reached an informed conclusion that the death ? is suspicious,? said Det Insp Gary Pettiford in February, adding that there were persons of interest in the case.

While police have not released their names, Queensland?s The Courier Mail named three people the police have spoken to for information in their investigation: Greg Roser, 58, and Peter Koenig, 61, who were reportedly the two men with Saunders at the time of his death and who told police he had ?fallen? into the vegetation shredder; and Saunders?s former girlfriend Sharon Graham, 57.

WHO does not suggest the three people had anything to do with the death.

According to reports, Graham is the sole beneficiary of Saunders?s will and has been romantically linked to Roser.

?The family is contesting the will,? read a family statement that said the will was ?out of character? with what Bruce had previously said.

Graham, who now reportedly lives in Saunders?s former Nambour home, could not be reached by WHO for comment. ?Today is the saddest day to say my goodbyes to a beautiful man Bruce,? she wrote in a Dec. 1 post on a funeral service website.

?He treated me like gold. His love to me was bigger than anything in this world. I?m so lost without you, Bruce. Will always have you in my thoughts and heart.?

As loved ones reeled over the case?s shocking developments, detectives returned to the crime scene in early February for a ?more thorough search of the area,? said Det Insp Pettiford.

They took away several items of interest from the property including fragments of human remains, clothing and parts of a mobile phone that went into the woodchipper.

It has not been confirmed whether Saunders, who reportedly raised the value of his life insurance policy before his death, died in the shredder or was already dead at the time. Whatever the case, ?We expect to lay charges,? said Pettiford.

It would be a day that can?t come soon enough for his loved ones, including his son, Blake, with his first wife, Deborah, who died of breast cancer in 2009, and his stepsons, Liam and Nolan.

?Mum has been distraught; it?s been horrible. We just want a resolution,? Liam tells WHO.

?You couldn?t meet a nicer man, he would always welcome you with open arms. He didn?t deserve this.?

A woman has been charged with murder along with two men over the gruesome death of a butcher whose body was allegedly found in a woodchipper.

Bruce Saunders, 54, was killed when he was allegedly put through the industrial machine at a property near Gympie in Queensland's east on November 12 last year.

Sharon Graham, 57, was on Tuesday charged with murder and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Peter Koenig, 61, and Greg Roser, 58, were arrested and charged with the same offences at 6.30am on Tuesday.

Police will be investigating several possible motives, including a love triangle gone wrong.

Mr Saunders was working on a property on Tanana Road clearing vegetation with the two men when he was allegedly murdered.

When police were called to the property on November 12, they described the scene as 'horrific'.

Gympie Police acting inspector Paul Algie said at the time it was 'one of the worst incident scenes I've ever seen'.

'It was actually quite horrific. His friends discovered him as he became entangled and attempted to extract him from the shredder and were unable to do so.

    'They're obviously quite traumatised now.'

The death was originally treated as an accident, but police opened a murder investigation when new details came to light.

Police will allege the three people charged were known associates and 'conspired together to commit this offence'.
