Residents of Point Hope are coming together in the wake of a boating accident that left one man dead and another still missing.
People across the North Slope and Northwest Arctic have spent the last week sending messages of support, remembrance, and hope to families of the two on social media.
Community members identified the men as Raymond Killigvuk and Jimmie Milligrock. They were thought to have been crossing a channel with a small boat outside of town when they encountered problems on Thursday.
Search and rescue volunteers headed out onto the water and were later able to locate Killigvuk's body. They were still looking for Milligrock early this week.
Volunteers across the region and as far away as Kotzebue offered their services to help look for the men. Locals said they believed the borough was involved in the search, though that, along with details about the accident, was not confirmed by Slope officials.
The North Slope Borough's public information officer, D.J. Fauske, did not respond to multiple requests for information about the search left for him over a period of several days. Other borough officials did not respond to requests for comment, either.
