At least 8 dead in New York City after a man drove a vehicle into pedestrians

    What we know

New York authorities have ended their first briefing, hours after a vehicle entered a bike path in lower Manhattan in an incident officials have called an ?act of terror?. Here?s what we know so far:

Eight people were killed, and 11 others were seriously injured.
The suspect is a 29-year-old male, who had a paintball gun and a pellet gun.
Police have not provided details about the suspect?s identity, but said that given his mode of attack and a ?statement? he made, authorities are considering the incident a terrorist attack.
The suspect was shot by police, but survived and was taken to a hospital.
Governor Andrew Cuomo called it a ?lone wolf? attack, and authorities have said there is no ongoing threat or evidence of a wider plot.
The attack occurred a few blocks from the new World Trade Center building at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attack in 2001.
The incident happened near Stuyvesant high school, a prestigious Manhattan public school.
The vehicle also hit a school bus, injuring two adults and two children.
Donald Trump tweeted: ?In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!?

Eight people are dead and 11 have been injured after a truck mounted a bicycle path in lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, mowing down cyclists and runners for 17 blocks, then reportedly shouting 'Allahu Akbar'.
The 29-year-old driver, named by insiders as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, entered the bicycle path at Houston Street at 3.05pm and drove downtown, knocking down victims before smashing into a school bus at at Chambers Street.
Two children and two adults on the bus were injured; they and seven other people are now in hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
After coming to a stop in his rented Home Depot truck, the terrorist then emerged from waving a paintball gun in one hand and a pellet gun in the other.
He was shot in the stomach by an on-duty NYPD officer who was at the scene and is now in hospital under police supervision.
At a press conference at Police Plaza later, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio condemned the attack as a 'cowardly act of terror'.

So how long before new regulations on renting cars?
Still nothing we can do about guns though. We're #1!

Not to sound all Debbie Downer, but I don't see how these tragedies can be avoided in the future.

It would require a massive overhaul of priorities. Lots of people with an agenda dont want that

Actually, we are much closer to ending this particular type of attack than we will ever be with guns.

Cars and trucks are almost smart enough now to stop you from crashing them. I expect that rental places and truckers will be required to outfit their vehicles with crash avoidance technology within the next decade or so. I expect big brother to figure out how to detect tampering... Much easier than getting the gun genie back in the bottle.

And most of the people he killed weren't even Americans. What an asshole.

Trump is definitely jizzing himself over this.

NYC bike path terror suspect found guilty on all counts in killing of 8 people

Sayfullo Saipov was found guilty of murder by a federal jury for using a rented truck to fatally strike eight people on a New York City bike path on Halloween Day in 2017.

The same jury will determine whether Saipov is sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty. The vote must be unanimous for the death penalty to be imposed. The penalty phase of the trial is scheduled to begin on February 6.
