Dan Markel (41) FSU law professor, shot to death

Days after a nationally renowned criminal law professor was found with a gunshot wound to his head, his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Florida State University professor Dan Markel was found in his Tallahassee, Florida, home on Friday. Police say there were no signs of robbery or burglary and have yet to disclose any motive.

According to Tallahassee police, officers found Markel after a neighbor called 911 at about 11 a.m. with reports of a "loud bang."

Markel, 41, was rushed to a local hospital, where he died the following day.

"While we cannot release specific information or details regarding this case, the Violent Crimes Unit is releasing that Mr. Markel's cause of death was a fatal gunshot wound to the head," Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo said in a statement.

By Monday, police had categorized the case as a homicide, and according to Tallahassee Police Department spokesman David Northway, Markel was the intended target.

Police created a tip line and offered a $3,000 reward. Within 24 hours, authorities received several leads, which they are pursuing, Northway said.

Authorities are also asking anyone who was in Markel's neighborhood between 10 a.m. and noon Friday to contact police.

"This includes delivery drivers, visitors to the neighborhood or even pedestrians that were walking in the area who may have seen or heard anything that would lead investigators to the suspect in this case," a police news release says.

Though police assured the community that Markel's killing was not likely a random act, there was still confusion and concern in Tallahassee.

"We were all shocked," former student Tony Fusco told CNN affiliate WCTV. "We didn't know why. We didn't know how. We just heard he was gone, and it was a big shock to all of us."

According to the university, Markel began working at FSU in 2005 after receiving his bachelor's at Harvard College, a master's from the University of Cambridge and a law degree from Harvard.

During his FSU tenure, the Toronto native taught several classes and wrote extensively about criminal law, including articles published in the Yale Law Review, among others.

Markel also founded PrawfsBlawg, a blog focused on law and life, and his writing appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Slate, The Jerusalem Post and The Atlantic Monthly.

On Sunday, friends, family members, students and colleagues gathered at a Tallahassee synagogue to remember the father and scholar, according to WCTV.

"I am filled with awe and appreciation for the support of our friends and family and particularly for the show of admiration, respect and love for Danny from this Tallahassee family," his sister, Shelly Markel, said, according to the station.

On the PrawfsBlawg front page, 10 fellow law professors posted about the respect they had for Markel and the mutual love he shared with his friends and family.

"His boundless energy was at the center of this community; it made it run, it gave it life. We are stunned and bereaved by his loss, and our thoughts go to his two little boys, who were precious to him, and to his family."

Florida State also issued a statement, saying in part: "His contributions to Florida State University College of Law and the broader legal community are pervasive and lasting. ... We will feel his loss for many years to come."

Markel was divorced from fellow FSU law professor Wendi Adelson last summer, according to her attorney, Jimmy Judkins.

"She is a basket case, distraught, very emotional," said Judkins, who told CNN his client has no idea why this happened.

Police have been in contact with Adelson, the attorney said.

    Dude has some creepy eyes.

From what I read earlier, Dan and his ex-wife had a rather contentious divorce.

I knew the ex had to be linked somewhere in this.

An arrest affidavit ? unexpectedly unsealed Thursday ? points to Wendi Adelson's brother Charlie Adelson, a Ft. Lauderdale cosmetic dentist, and her mother Donna Adelson, who works at the family's practice. Investigators say the motive for the murder ?stemmed from the desperate desire of the Adelson family? that Wendi and the couple?s two young sons be allowed to move to South Florida.

The information tying the family to the killing is described under the title "Motive for Murder" in the arrest affidavit for 34-year-old Sigfredo Garcia, arrested last week in the shooting of the Florida State University law professor at his Betton Hills home.

The charging document also notes an upcoming court hearing that might have forbidden Wendi Adelson?s mother from having unsupervised time with the children.

Investigators found emails showing Wendi Adelson's parents, particularly her mother, wanted her daughter to "coerce" Markel into allowing the boys' move. The correspondence also suggested Charles Adelson didn't like his ex-brother-in-law and the two did not get along.

At a Thursday news conference, Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo stopped short of calling members of the Adelson family formal suspects in the broad-daylight killing in the garage of Markel's Trescott Drive home. But said more arrests are expected. He confirmed the couple's contentious divorce was ?a motivating factor in this murder.?

Wendi Adelson, a former FSU law professor who officially left the faculty in January 2015 and now works for a federal appeals court judge in Miami, did not respond to an email request for comment. Charles Adelson did not return repeated calls to the dentistry practice, the Adelson Institute, which he shares with his father.

DeLeo would not elaborate on whether any of the Adelsons are under surveillance or if they have been interviewed. The probable cause report does not say whether family members have been questioned. When asked if he knew their whereabouts, DeLeo replied with a smirk: ?We aren?t on speaking terms.?

It always amazes me that not just one but a group of people think this kind of stuff is OK.

another article explaining the Tensions Between Police And Prosecutors
There's going to be a 20/20 episode on this case, Friday, September 16, at 10 p.m. Eastern time

They hate Danny in a way. I have never seen this kind of obsession. I mean, their hobby is hating Danny,” Lacasse is heard telling police on video recorded during his interview. “I would just say, I would be investigating Charlie Adelson. I don’t know if he did this, but if you are looking at someone, don’t miss him.”

Good old Wendi. She got everything she wanted. A dead ex she no longer has to fight over custody with, the move she wanted, the kids, etc......
There's something really nasty about the fact that she ended up even changing the kid's last names.

An undercover agent who posed as the brother of a Florida professor's alleged killer got much more than he bargained for when he confronted the victim's mother-in-law as part of a sting operation.
The unidentified law enforcement member was investigating the murder of Daniel Markel and looking to confirm a connection between alleged hit man Luis Rivera and Markel's former mother-in-law, Donna Adelson.
Markel was shot dead in July 2014 while in his garage. Rivera and Sigfredo Garcia were later charged with the murder, but some of Markel's in-laws are suspected by authorities of having played a role in arranging the killing in response to his recent contentious divorce from their daughter and sister Wendi.
To investigate the role the Adelsons may have played in Markel's death, the agent approached Donna on the street and said that his brother was in need of money, and asked her for $5,000 to help out the man.
Donna appears shocked and taken aback in video of the interaction which can be seen for the fist time ever on 20/20 Friday night, but not as shocked as police after what happened next.
According to police documents, authorities allege that soon after Donna met the agent claiming to be Rivera's brother, her son Charlie called his then-girlfriend Katherine Magbanua and said to her: 'You better kill him, because he?s going to be a big problem... if you can't do it I'll have someone else do it.'

Video of the encounter between Donna and the undercover agent shows the man approaching her on the street and saying: 'I wanted to let you know that my brother? he helped your family with this problem your family had up north. He?s going through some rough times and I want to make sure that you take care of what he?s going through.'
A stunned Donna responds to this by saying: 'You?re scaring me. I don?t know what you?re talking about.'
That is when the agent hands over the envelope with his request for money and Donna walks away.
In another phone call made shortly after the sting, police allege that Charlie told his mother she should just pay the money as 'a charity.'
Magbanua also reached out to Garcia after the sting according to police.

ABC News Corespondent Matt Gutman spoke to DailyMail.com about the case ahead of Friday night's episode of 20/20, and revealed how Rivera may come to play a big role in the case.
'State sources tell us that they are in negotiations with Rivera for a plea deal in exchange for his cooperation,' said Gutman.
That plea deal could have something to do with the ongoing investigation into some members of the Adelson family, and whether or not they paid Garcia and Rivera to carry out Markel's murder.
The Tallahassee Police Department released probable cause affidavits in the case earlier this month which they believe provided enough evidence to warrant the arrest of Donna and Charlie for the murder of Markel, along with Magbanua.
In addition to being Charlie's girlfriend at the time of Markel's murder, Magbanua is also the mother of Garcia's two children.

Among the information revealed in the probable cause affidavits was that fact that Garcia called Magbanua an astonishing 2,700 times in the three months before Markel's murder.
The documents also showed that there were a number of phones calls placed on July 1, 2014, 17 days before Markel was killed, between Charlie, Magbanua, Garcia and a phone registered to Harvey Adelson, Markel's former father-in-law.
A number of phone calls also occurred between midnight and 1am between Charlie, his mother Donna, Magbanua and Garcia on July 18, the day Markel was murdered.
Authorities also paid close attention to the money being spent and received in the days and weeks after the murder.
Rivera purchased a motorcycle within 10 days of the murder according to the affidavit, and Garcia purchased both a motorcycle and a car soon after Markel's death.
Meanwhile, Magbanua began to receive checks from Chris and his father's dental practice, the Adelson Institute, from September 2014 through January of this year.
In the year prior to Markel's murder, Magbanua also deposited a totaled of $15,000 in cash according to the affidavit.
After the murder she was making deposits totaling $44,000 the affidavit stated.
The affidavit also revealed that one of Wendi Adelson's ex-boyfriends told police she had confessed that her brother was considering paying $15,000 for a hit man.
Gutman said though that he interviewed friends of Wendi, and they stated that there is no possible way she would have been involved or even known about this alleged plot devised by her family.
The Adelson family has also called claims that they had any involvement at all in Markel's death 'categorically false.'
State Attorney Willie Meggs seems to agree with the family as well, stating last week that he would not seek an arrest warrant for Charlie or Magbanua despite the release of the affidavits.

Tallahassee Police said in their probable cause affidavit that they believe Markel's death was the result of his contentious 2013 divorce from Wendi, a lawyer who now lives in Miami Beach and works for a federal judge.
Authorities say Garcia and Rivera traveled from South Florida to Tallahassee in a light green Toyota Prius to kill Markel.
Multiple surveillance videos captured the Prius following Markel as he dropped his sons off at daycare before going to the gym.
Markel then returned home and was sitting in his car and talking on the phone, the keys still in the ignition, when he was shot dead.
A neighbor called police after hearing a gunshot and seeing the Prius back out of the driveway.
The murder came one year after the couple's divorce.
Markel reportedly learned that his marriage was over when he returned home from a business trip to find his wife and children gone, the house empty, and divorce papers laying on his bed.
Wendi and Markel's custody battle turned ugly according to authorities when her parents became desperate to move the couple's children closer to them in South Florida.
Markel eventually asked a judge to stop Donna from having unsupervised contact with his sons, claiming she had been telling them disparaging remarks about their father.
The probable cause affidavit for Charles revealed a judge refused to allow Wendi to move her sons to South Florida in June 2013, shortly after the divorce.
It also stated that the family then discussed paying Markel $1million to allow the children to relocate.
Wendi has since changed her children's last names in the wake of her ex-husband's murder, telling investigators she did this in order to protect them.
More about this case will be revealed at 10pm Friday on ABC's 20/20.

    oh what a tangled web.

The first person Garcia called when his phone was picked up on cellular towers in the Lake City area after the shooting was Magbanua.

The call to Magbanua was one of 2,700 investigators found Garcia made to her between May 1, 2014, and July 19, 2014 - the day after Markel’s killing.

Prosecutors have called Magbanua a suspect, or at least a witness, in the killing for months. Last month they sought records of a breast enhancement procedure she had they say was partially paid for by Charlie Adelson. At one point, the two were involved in a romantic relationship, court records say. Call records show she is one of the periodontist's top contacts.

Following the slaying, Rivera and Garcia purchased several cars and motorcycles around the same time Magbanua began receiving paychecks from the family's dentistry practice, court records say. The checks were handwritten and signed by Donna Adelson.

State Attorney Willie Meggs last month said there was not enough probable cause to arrest anyone in the Adelson family in connection with Markel's shooting. The investigation continues.

Police found between Markel’s killing in July 2014 and Nov. 2015, Magbanua deposited more than $56,000 in cash into her bank account. The deposits, the probable cause notes, were made mostly through ATMs in increments of $300 to $2,000.

“Investigators believe that Magbanua is supported financially by Charlie Adelson," court records say, "and has received numerous benefits from the Adelsons since Markel’s murder.”

Just insanity that these ppl think going this route would bring them the outcome they wanted. All chances of even seeing the kids are completely lost now.
And to choose to kill someone to get what you want completely blows my mind!

    Ugh.
It's a damn shame that none of the Adelson have been arrested..especially Wendi.

A woman has been charged in the death of a prominent Florida State University law professor who was mysteriously killed two years ago.
Katherine Magbanua, 31, allegedly helped facilitate the murder-for-hire plot that left Daniel Markel dead in July 2014. She has been charged with first-degree murder.
Magbanua was dating Markel's former brother-in-law when the nationally-renowned criminal justice scholar was found dead with two gunshots to the head in his garage.
Detectives believe Magbanua is the link between Markel's ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, and the two men accused of killing him.

She should have turned on that family and saved herself. They offered her deal agree deal. Maybe she will testify against her ex boyfriend for a lighter sentence, but she needs to go to jail for life. If for no reason other than being stupid. That no snitching rule only goes so far. Chances are that man's parents aren't going to look out for their children, children who have lost both parents to prison. All because Wendi and her g wants custody. I don't think that they let her in on the plan, but her mother and brother most definitely were in on the plan.
