Random decaying foot horrifies grieving family as they bury grandfather

Mourning gave way to the macabre at a New Jersey cemetery where a beloved grandfather?s burial uncovered a moldering bare foot from an adjoining grave.

The devastated family of Cleveland Butler, 85, received a second and unexpected jolt when the body part appeared from the dirt as his blue casket was lowered into the ground at Mount Holiness Memorial Park.

?This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this,? daughter Sandra Butler told the Daily News.

    Fucking yikes!
No thank you. It looks like maybe the ground shifted and the foot became exposed, but the body would have to have been buried without a coffin, or else why was there no wood or anything? Creepy, creepy, creepy!

Was the dude not buried in shoes? And how the hell did his foot go through the casket?

Wow. I guess the coffin decayed first. Embalming at its best?

That would be a bit traumatizing to see at my loved ones burial.

No I think its funny too. But not so much if it were my family member being buried and I saw it live.

Second thought after the shock/trauma wore off I'd probably make jokes about grandpa getting kicked in the butt or something. It's pretty freaky though!

Why is the foot owner buried so high up? Shouldn't his foot have come out level with the base of the coffin? It's like he's lying on top of the one next door?

Edit actually, he would've been even higher to start with because he seems to be embedded in that giant chunk of mud that dropped out of the grave wall. Weird.

When we buried my Dad, I recall the funeral home guy asking if we wanted to bring in shoes. He said sometimes the shoes don't go on the feet right, so they're optional. I don't remember the exact reason, but we opted for shoes. I don't think any of us ever checked if he had them on, so for all I know the funeral director was kicking around in my Dad's sneakers.

It's common for people to be buried without shoes unless the family requests it. Also, the clothes (jackets, shirts, pants, dresses) are cut up the back and just placed over the bodies giving the appearance of being worn. Interestingly enough, underwear normally isn't cut but actually put on normally unless the person is large. There's lots of other things that people outside the funeral industry don't realize.

We didn't bury my dad in his shoes because he mostly had just one favorite pair he tolerated. He had major foot pain from health issues stemming from being ran over by a car so he hated wearing shoes anyway.

And no, Ani you're not the only one who laughed. I was just like "meh, cemetery-dead bodies, it happens"

How they gonna walk into the light without shoes though? What if the path is full of obstacles? What if heaven has a no shirts/no shoes policy? This is highly improper.

Why don't we see parts of the coffin from rotting corpse foot? Jimmy Hoffa or maybe Bill's beloved Julie? Seems as good a place as any to hide a body.

Yeah, I'm still finding that grave depth, & the body's proximity to the plot next door kind of odd. It'd be unusual for a body in a coffin to somehow end up placed so close to the edge of a plot. It could just be the result of lazy, unprofessional gravediggers, or poor plot marking - that's probably the simplest explanation.

If I was family to the person in the collapsed grave, I think I'd want to know for certain though

NJ doesn't require burial vaults (a concrete box)?

Each state is different. Some don't even require a coffin. Bizarre, but true.

NJ does not require them. The poorer cemeteries usually don't use them.

I'm really confused by this picture since the foot does not appear to be as decayed as it should be if the casket was rotted away. Since it's above the casket in the picture, not completely decayed, and it's in a plastic bag, I'd question if someone "dropped off" a body in the neighboring plot after that service was completed but before the grave was filled in. It's been known to happen...

First off, I'd say that is a really plain box- looking at the side bottom of it, it looks like folded cardboard ! There are no visible handles, and I would bet it is a plain wooden box, with a very sparse floral arrangement, so it must have been a scraping-the -bottom-of-the-barrel-type funeral, one step up from a pauper's burial. Which means the foot next door was probably in the same type of box, no vault, and wet. Which explains why a piece of it appears to be sticking to the back of its leg and heel.

My bad, what I saw as a piece of thin wood or cardboard was probably the plastic referred to earlier

This looks like a Texas Funeral. Like the one in Kill Bill. Obviously its in New Jersey.
