Funeral Home Worker Admits Dumping Casket Containing Child's Organs

Police found the "shocking" item on a sidewalk.

A child-size casket containing human remains was found on a Pennsylvania sidewalk Monday.
A New Jersey funeral home worker has admitted to dumping a child-sized casket containing a deceased baby's organs on a Pennsylvania sidewalk earlier this week.

According to police, the funeral home director, whose name has not yet been released, contacted investigators in Philadelphia on Tuesday and reported one of his employees had acknowledged dumping the casket.

"It's shocking, to say the least", Philadelphia Police Capt. Malachi Jones said at press conference.

According to Jones, the organs belong to a baby between 3 and 4 months of age who was buried in South Jersey last Thursday. Jones declined to specify the baby's exact age and gender.

"Just prior to the funeral, the casket latch broke," Jones said. "The baby was transferred from that broken casket to another casket."

A passerby found the broken casket in the 3100 block of W. Clearfield Street on Monday night. The location is near a cemetery, which initially prompted fears that someone had dug up the coffin. However, police were unable to identify any disturbed plots in the area.

Left unclear is why the baby's organs were inside the casket and why the funeral home worker chose to dump it in Philadelphia.

That "is something we are still investigating," said the captain. "This is obviously not normal practice to how this is done."

The child's family was notified prior to the press conference.

"From what I understand, the family was quite upset," Jones said.

The investigation is ongoing. As of Friday, no charges have been filed.

This was a case that happened in Miami.

Dead baby found in Dumpster may have been taken from funeral home

A man rummaging for food in a Dumpster at a North Miami gas station made a startling discovery early Friday: a dead, newborn boy wrapped in cloth in a box ? with a toe tag.

How exactly the body got there remained a mystery late Friday. But the toe tag offered a big clue to police, who now suspect the child was dead long before it was placed in the Dumpster, and that it may have come from a funeral home.

A Carey Royal Ram?n funeral home worker whose assignment was to deliver the baby?s body to a crematorium told police he instead went home and left the body in his company van. Later, he saw TV accounts of a baby having been found in a Dumpster and raced to the scene. There, he told police that he had discovered the van had been burglarized and the box holding the baby was among several boxes stolen.

NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) ? North Miami Police were questioning a transport driver after a box with a deceased newborn was stolen from his vehicle and left at a gas station dumpster.

Jarren Hood was arrested Friday night and charged with obstruction of justice.

Hood, according to police, is the son of the owner of the Carey Royal Ram?n Mortuary.

A police spokesperson told CBS4?s Carey Codd that detectives do not feel Hood was completely forthcoming about the box with the dead baby inside and how that box wound up in a dumpster.

Cameras caught Hood on the scene at the U-Gas service station in North Miami on Friday. Police say Hood arrived to tell investigators that a box had been stolen from his transport van.

Family was awarded 28 million dollars.

That's just wrong in so many ways. Glad the family got awarded the money. It's not bad enough that they lost someone that young but then to have it's body thrown in a dumpster, like trash, is horrific.

Why were the organs not put back inside the baby? And why was the baby transferred to a new casket and the organs left in the broken one?

No such thing happened. Funeral workers don't make mistakes or mishandle bodies. You should know that from the Mott thread.

We all know the truth here. Bill is behind this.

I was thinking that this was something he'd be involved in.

Well, where else are you supposed to put unused baby organs?
