Christopher Lockhart (47) took his own life five months after he killed his wife Theresa

    http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/...13_days_a.html

Students and staff are wearing red ribbons for a Schoolcraft teacher and Portage resident missing now for 13 days.

A K-9 search on Wednesday, May 31, the third one since 44-year-old Theresa Lockhart went missing on May 18, did not help police find the woman, Portage Department of Public Safety Senior Deputy Police Chief John Blue said.

Lockhart left her residence about 10 p.m. May 18 in her car, Portage police have said. The vehicle was later found a few miles from her house at a park-and-ride lot off West Centre Avenue and U.S. 131.

Lockhart is well-liked in the district, which has about 100 teachers and more than 1,100 students, he said. She teaches high school Spanish and a leadership class at the middle school, Stitt said.

School officials don't know a lot about the police investigation, he said, but they're cooperating with investigators any way they can.

"It's hard to explain," he said. "This is not a behavior that she had exhibited in the past."

Stitt said Lockhart notified the school she wouldn't be at work Monday and Tuesday, May 15-16, and all communication from her stopped Wednesday, May 17. He called police himself on Saturday, May 20, he said.

"After a couple of days of not hearing from her, I felt like we needed to do something," the superintendent said. He said the school district also sent staff members to her house in an attempt to check on her.

Investigators use a systematic process to investigate all missing person cases the same, he said, and police want to avoid developing what could be a false conclusion. Similar cases have ended in different ways, he said, some with expected outcomes and others with unexpected outcomes.

"You can't rule anything out," he said, "or adhere yourself to one particular theme, until the facts are visited and revisited again."

Police have conducted interviews and searches including aerial and K9 searches, he said.

The investigation continues to expand and involves several agencies, he said.

"We're hoping there is some sort of additional contact that we have from her," Blue said. Investigators are looking at phone records, bank records and "a full spectrum" of things in their investigation, he said.

He urges anyone who may have information about her Lockhart's whereabouts to call Portage police at 269-329-4567.

Missing teacher case is possible homicide; husband is person of interest

The disappearance of a local teacher has become a possible homicide investigation, police say, and her husband is a person of interest in the matter.

Police say they have been unable to find Schoolcraft teacher Theresa Lockhart, 44, since she was last seen on May 18.

They say that -- along with a lack of cooperation from her spouse, Christopher Lockhart -- are causing them to adjust their investigation.

"The key elements of it, the complete void of 'proof of life' for the duration of the time, the lack of communication input, and the lack of cooperation by the spouse, has refocused us," said Senior Deputy Chief John Blue, of the Portage Department of Public Safety. "At this point, we are moving the course of the investigation toward a homicide investigation."

Lockhart has not been seen since she drove away from her home in Portage at about 10 p.m. on May 18. Police have searched and say it is possible she may have simply left the area, but there has been no "proof of life."

That refers to the lack of such things as phone contact with friends, family and others, use of credit cards, the unusual place her vehicle was found, and no signs of pre-planning (evidence that her absence was pre-planned, as if she was going on a trip).

Husband of missing Portage woman: ‘It’s an attempt to embarrass me’

The man detectives have identified as a person of interest in a Schoolcraft teacher’s disappearance denies any involvement.

Christopher Lockhart told 24 Hour News 8’s Lynsey Mukomel over the phone Saturday morning he has given investigators all of the information he has on his wife, Theresa Lockhart, and that he has been cooperative despite their statements to media.

On Friday the Portage Department of Public Safety named Christopher as a person of interest in their investigation.

Theresa, a Spanish teacher at Schoolcraft Community Schools, was reported missing on Saturday, May 20, by school officials after she didn’t show up for work. Her car was found that same weekend just a couple miles from her home at a park-and-ride off of Angling Road.

Her husband cites a history with anxiety and depression, plus a potential non-renewal of her teaching contract after this school year as an explanation for her sudden disappearance.

Christopher said the district was trying to force her into resigning and she had been struggling the week leading up to her disappearance.

Dr. Rusty Stitt, superintendent of Schoolcraft Community Schools, told 24 Hour News 8 Saturday that Theresa initiated a potential resignation, however.

The district never received a formal resignation though and continues to pray she will return safely, Dr. Stitt said. Her contract runs through the end of this school year.

Her husband believes stress at work was too much and went on to explain that she received help in the past for her mental health without telling him.

“When she left I assumed she was going to get herself some help. That’s why I wasn’t really too worried about it at that point in time because I want to keep her issues private,” Lockhart told 24 Hour News 8. “…I basically told them the same story I’m telling you, that she up and left. She’s done this before. I didn’t think she had a job to go back to.”

Lockhart said for now his attorney has advised him not to answer detectives’ questions.

“I think the police just don’t have anything more right now and I guess they’re trying to shake some trees and see what falls out,” he said. “It’s an attempt to embarrass me and put pressure on me.”

After speaking with Lockhart, 24 Hour News 8 reached out to Portage Department of Public Safety Deputy Chief John Blue. He said Christopher should consider helping them find Theresa instead of obstructing their investigation.

Saturday, 24 Hour News 8 also spoke with Theresa Lockhart’s lifelong friend about the new developments in her disappearance.

Michelle Addington has known Theresa since they were just kids and have remained close ever since.

Addington said Theresa and Christopher had a strained relationship, and that Theresa had told her of problems with their marriage.

When investigators announced that Christopher was a person of interest in his wife’s disappearance, Addington said she was not surprised. She is skeptical of some of the claims he has made.

“I understand the answers he is giving, but for me they don’t fit with the character — her character — and the person she is,” Addington told 24 Hour News 8. “The fact is they were living together. They were married. Who doesn’t know the whereabouts of their spouse if you’re living together and you’re married?”

What was his reasoning for not reporting her missing? That she has supposedly done this before?

New video may offer clues to missing teacher

New video and audio tapes have surfaced that could provide new clues about the moments before and after a teacher went missing last month.

Theresa Lockhart's husband, Christopher Lockhart, is considered a person of interest and Investigative Reporter Cody Combs has a report with new video and audio tapes provided by a neighbor of Lockhart.

Neighbors tell what we're about to show you and what you're about to hear was recorded on May 27 at 11:30 a.m. and later the same day, Portage Police swing by the Lockhart's home, and approach Teresa's husband Chris, asking him about those gunshots neighbors say they heard.

Portage Police: Hey Chris can we talk to you?

Portage Police: We got a call around 11:30 this morning, neighbors saying they heard a couple of gunshots.

Christopher Lockhart: They didn't come from here (inaudible)

Portage Police: You heard it, too?

Christopher Lockhart: Yeah, I did hear it.

Shortly after police asked Lockhart about those gunshots, investigators leave, and Lockhart does, as well.

We should point out that in 2016, Christopher Lockhart was charged with domestic assault against his wife Theresa and he was ordered to have no contact with her, although later Theresa had the no-contact order removed.

Neighbors said Lockhart would frequently yell at Theresa, and provided us a clip, which they say shows some of the yelling from the summer of 2016.

I started out thinking if she was being let go from her job, married to a POS, and who knows what else, I'd be willing to bet she had some help and made a run for it.

    Doesn't seem likely however.

The husband has some screws loose. I think eventually he will be charged with Theresa's murder.

Missing teacher's husband charged with cutting internet, cable lines

The husband of a missing Portage woman faces charges of tampering with his next-door neighbor's internet and cable lines.

Christopher Lockhart, 47, is expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon on two charges -- one count of interfering with electronic communications, a felony, and one count of malicious destruction of a building under $200, a misdemeanor.
According to probable cause testimony in Kalamazoo County District Court, Lockhart's next-door neighbor found on June 30 that his internet and cable line had been cut. He installed a security camera in the event of any further problems, and the next night the camera recorded Lockhart in the neighbor's yard, Portage Public Safety Detective Dereck Hess testified.

The camera recorded Lockhart turning off his lights, coming out of his house, going to the area where the cable was cut, then going back to his house and turning the lights back on, the detective said.

"The person who lives next door is Christopher Lockhart, who resembles the person in the video," Hess told the judge.

Hess said the interfering with electronic communications charge is for Lockhart allegedly cutting the internet and cable lines, and the malicious destruction charge is for Lockhart also allegedly cutting the home's air conditioning line.

Lockhart was arrested at his Portage home around 7 p.m. Thursday, July 6.

Portage Public Safety Senior Deputy Chief John Blue said Thursday evening that Lockhart was arrested on a malicious destruction of property charge.

"It wasn't in connection with the missing person case," Blue said.

I wish I knew what any of this meant. I'm curious to what he did to violate his probation. Hopefully he'll just stay in there so he can't hurt anyone else. Pretty sure he hurt his wife. Creepy looking dude.

The court doesn't put a lot of details in their records on the site, but one of the news articles I read stated that the traffic offense was driving under the influence of alcohol. They still did not incarcerate him, but gave him what they call a tether. I think he will have to take a breathalyzer each time he starts his car and maybe wear a gps tracking device. Not 100% sure. They must have determined in the bond violation/revocation hearing that he did violate the stipulations set forth for bonding out the first time, but not badly enough to remain incarcerated until his hearing/trial for the first round of charges, or the jail may be too overcrowded so they let him out with a monitoring device.

The police have released a new missing person's poster for Theresa. Not sure why, unless they think the 2nd photo looks that much different than the other one, which was the original one used.

Christopher Lockhart arrested for 4th time since wife's disappearance

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Christopher Lockhart is back in jail today, after being arrested for the fourth time since his wife, Theresa's, disappearance nearly 11 weeks ago.

Lockhart, 47, remains a person of interest in his wife's disappearance, but none of the current charges are related to that incident.

Today, he was charged with tampering with an electronic monitoring device. He was arraigned on the charge this morning, and was ordered to surrender his passport.
Lockhart's previous arrests included charges for property destruction, operating while intoxicated, and a bond violation.

Police said the latest charge relates to a complaint that Lockhart removed his alcohol tether. A felony warrant was issued Friday. When Lockhart reported this morning for a routine checkup at the Office of Corrections, police arrested him.

Lockhart's first arrest was July 6 after he was caught on his neighbor's home security camera cutting the cable and air conditioning lines. He was released on bond, but on July 17, Lockhart violated that bond when he was arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated.

After his second arrest, he was issued an alcohol tether.
Lockhart was arrested a third time for violating the bond agreement of his first arrest after failing a test related to his alcohol tether. “It’s alleged that on or about July 21st approximately 9:45 that you failed to test on Soberlink unit on July 20 and July 21,” a judge said during Lockhart’s latest hearing.

Theresa Lockhart, a Schoolcraft teacher, was last seen May 18 leaving a Zumba class at the Family Fitness Center in Portage. Two days later, when she didn't show up for work, the Schoolcraft superintendent reported her missing.

    Uh oh

Christopher Lockhart has been found dead in his home of an apparent suicide.

Public safety officers found Lockhart's body in his house on Poplar Bluff Court after he missed a 10 a.m. report time with the Office of Community Corrections, Portage Public Safety Senior Deputy Chief John Blue said in a press release.

Portage Public Safety cars have a section of Poplar Bluff Court surrounding the Lockhart home blocked off, and detectives can be seen going in and out of the home.

Officers conducted a welfare check at Lockhart's house and gained entry, then found him dead. They are continuing to investigate his death, including looking for any information that might point to the whereabouts of Lockhart's missing wife, Theresa Lockhart.

Portage Public Safety cars have a section of Poplar Bluff Court surrounding the Lockhart home blocked off.

Theresa Lockhart, a Spanish teacher in Schoolcraft, vanished on May 18. Her car was found at a Portage park-and-ride. Police have searched a game area near the park-and-ride where her car was found, but have found no sign of of her.

Christopher Lockhart had been named a person of interest in her disappearance but has not been charged.

Lockhart, 47, had been arrested four times since his wife went missing on charges unrelated to her disappearance.
