Serial Killer H.H. Holmes' Body Exhumed: What We Know

This was pretty interesting. I'd never heard of him before.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/...e-know-w480344

The remains resting in H.H. Holmes's coffin is being removed from its grave, and a team of researchers are hoping to find out if the they indeed belong to America's first serial killer. Last week, Philadelphia-based analysts started exhuming the body of what they presume to be Holmes, buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. He was supposedly executed by hanging just nine days before his 35th birthday, on May 7th, 1896, but rumors have persisted since his death that he actually escaped. Now, his descendants want to put a stop to this story once and for all.

My daughter keeps begging me to watch that series but I am refusing out of spite. I don't know if it was about him. She begged me to watch Pretty Little Liars and I got addicted. I felt like so old watching that show.

I've never seen Pretty Little Liars-too young for me. AHS is definately geared for adults.

All I learned about HH Holmes from AHS is that he killed a shit ton of people. I don't think there would be anything left of him now?

He was Americas First Serial Killer according to the article so, he must have been important. I don't know if there will be much for them to do DNA testing on. If they can, it will be interesting to find out if he escaped or not.

I thought there had to be marrow left in the bone to do testing.

Yes but he's been in a wooden coffin (I'm assuming) since 1896. Wouldn't that have deteriorated by now? Especially given exposure to water?

Based on the documentary Boston suggested it says he was buried in concrete. Also he was hung 121 years ago today and we share the same b-day.

He was one nasty fucker. They've based a lot of different movies on him. I'm not sure if he was the first, I thought Gunness was. But he not only killed here in the US but also in England. He would take out life insurance policies on both employees and people who were guests and then collect. There's a documentary on Netflix about him. I recommend it!

ETA: I was wrong, Belle Gunness operated 1900 on. Another crazy fucker.

I used to live not far from where he lived and did his killings in Chicago. I've always wondered if that land was haunted. There's a post office there if I'm not mistaken.

Oh wow- I'm pretty sure I've seen & read stuff about this guy. If I remember correctly, he killed a lot of people who were in Chicago for the World's Fair. And other people too. This should be interesting. Thanks for the heads up, Emmy!

He's heaps interesting! He was a crafty fella! The layout of the hotel is interesting as hell tooooooooo/fact he kept changing up builders so they didn't realise they were building a death maze.

I think this link leads to some pix and such - http://www.apredatorymind.com/The_Tw...es_part_3.html

Ok- yep, daisylane, that's the fella! I forgot about his place- it was like a maze. Staircases to nowhere & secret, hidden rooms. And no one knew the entire layout besides him. He went to enormous lengths to plan his murders, and there were a bunch of them. It's like something a depraved serial killer would do if he won big money in the lotto!

    H. H. Holmes also was delighted most by listening to the muffled cries of his victims as he slowly suffocated them to death in their gas-filled sleeping quarters.

So I'm just now seeing this for the first time, my apologies...
But actually, to be completely honest with you here; I really only have this 1 legitimate "ghost" story that I can tell, comes from a personal experience that happened one night at a now, basically abandoned cemetery. The local legend says that it's known/rumored to be haunted for many years, previously Native American burial ground.

Ended up having to run from the cops there too, one of the two times that I went... as the neighborhood folk watch for and call the cops on any trespassers they notice, that kind of thing.

Thx for posting those illustrations berm! It's one thing to say Secret Chamber, but these illustrations really help to visualize it. It's like something out of a nightmare.

Erik Larson wrote a great book about H.H. Homes, "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America".

TV Show Looks To Link H.H. Holmes and Jack The Ripper

Cameras have been rolling all week at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Delaware County. A television crew is recording a show on serial killer H.H. Holmes.
Holmes’ descendants received approval from a judge to exhume their relative’s body and it turns out they need more time. They’ve asked the court to amend the initial decree to give them the time they need.
Family lore indicates Holmes somehow escaped his own execution back in May, 1896.
A DNA test on the exhumed body should put that question to rest.
But the TV show in production on the case will also attempt to take Holmes’ story much farther, all the way to London.
According to the History Channel’s website the show, "…sets out to prove a controversial theory: that H.H. Holmes and Britain’s most notorious serial killer, Jack The Ripper, were the same man.”
