MS-13 Gang - Murders related to the gang

I decided to start a thread on this gang due to some recent events. Please post any crimes/murders related to this gang in here.

    MS-13 poses 'significant' threat
Recent threat assessment shows some of highest numbers of members in state

HOUSTON - The brutality of the gang is well documented -- from a middle school student hacked to death near the Addicks Dam, to a high school student murdered in Sam Houston National Forest, to a 14-year-old girl kidnapped, shot and left in the street. The latest murder also came with Satanic overtones.

"MS-13 has said to us in interviews: they kill for a living," FBI Supervisory Special Agent Mark Sabol said.

MS-13 is a gang rooted in the violence of Central America. The "MS" stand for Mara Salvatrucha, which translates to Salvadoran gang. The gang was born on the streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s. Original members fled the violence of El Salvador and then banded together as a way to protect each other from rival gangs in the United States. Since that time, MS-13 has spread across the country.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the gang's numbers grew in 2015 as members snuck into the U.S. among the thousands of unaccompanied Central American children crossing into Texas.

A recent threat assessment from DPS shows Houston reporting some of the highest numbers of MS-13 members in the state. The DPS's assessment noted MS-13's relationship with drug cartels, its propensity for murder and dismemberment "positioned the gang as one of the state's most significant gang threats."

"We see MS-13 activity all over (Harris) County and even the surrounding counties," Sabol said.

Yet, MS-13 is far from the only gang operating in the Houston area. Houston police reported there are 353 gangs in our area, with roughly 19,000 members. Last year, our city saw 302 murders; 57 were gang related -- a point highlighted by a DPS map showing Harris County as one of three spots in the state with the highest amount of gang activity.

"Please don't underestimate (what) they're capable of doing," Caroleta Johnson, a lieutenant with HPD, said. "They're involved in all types of crimes. They're involved in violent crime, non-violent crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, they're involved in burglary, identification theft."

Johnson said the word "gang" can also have different meanings, from the well-known, well-organized groups to a loose collection of people who live in the same neighborhood.

"Just based on where they live, they kind of do their own thing. They make up their own rules, or some of them may not have rules," Johnson said.

Johnson said a key component to combating gangs is understanding the culture, essentially, tapping into core motivations, beliefs and even the lingo as a way to counteract the gang life. Johnson said this where the public can help.

"We want to urge people not to ignore it, learn it, take interest in it and listen and provide this information to us," Johnson said.

To that last point, the FBI and all law enforcement agencies in our area contributed to the creation of www.stophoustongangs.org. This site gives a breakdown of all the gangs in our area, complete with signs, symbols and so-called "colors."

The site allows users to submit tips anonymously.

    MS-13 related death

One of 10 suspects in the torture and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Virginia claims to be connected to the notorious MS-13 gang and was wearing a court-ordered electronic monitoring ankle bracelet at the time of the killing.

Authorities say the brutal murder of Damaris Reyes Rivas in Fairfax County was recorded on cellphone video. The suspects, including six juveniles, killed Rivas in retaliation for the slaying of 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas on New Year's Eve, according to investigators. The two victims are not related, according to the Washington Post.

The ages of the 10 suspects range from 15 to 21, according to the newspaper. The video shows how they tortured the teen at length before taking her life.

The four adults have been identified as Cindy Blanco Hernandez, Aldair Miranda Carcamo and Jose Castillo Rivas, all 18, and 21-year-old Wilmer Sanchez-Serrano.

"Some of the videos depict the interrogators holding a knife, poking the victim with a knife and stabbing the victim with a large pointed log while the victim still exhibited signs of life," according to the warrant obtained by NBC in Washington. "In one of the videos, the victim is lying supine on the ground surrounded by dead leaves and bleeding heavily from large wounds on different areas of her body."

The recording is "date-stamped January 8, 2017" and includes "the interrogation and taunting of the victim by several males," according to an affidavit obtained by Fox 5.

Authorities believe that Damaris Reyes Rivas was tricked by her killers, and then taken into the woods, according to the Washington Post. She was found dead near an industrial park.

One of the juvenile suspects was wearing an ankle bracelet because he was on probation at the time. The suspect claimed to have ties to the MS-13 gang, according Fox 5. Several of the suspects in fact had links to the ruthless gang, according to the Washington Post.

The MS-13 gang originated in Los Angeles, but has spread to other parts of the U.S. and the world. MS-13 gang members in Texas are currently being investigated for killing an unidentified teen in a "satanic" ritual.

Damaris Reyes Rivas' mother had indicated that her daughter once dated Christian Sosa Rivas, according to the newspaper. Six people have been charged his slaying.

Additionally, remains of two people were found in a park in Fairfax County on Thursday. Cops are looking into whether the possible homicides are linked to MS-13, according to the Washington Post.

This one was a pretty big story locally:
    http://www.nj.com/union/index.ssf/20...n_killing.html

ELIZABETH ? German Lisandro Benites Moreno came to New Jersey earlier this year specifically to recruit people to establish a new chapter of the MS-13 street gang, authorities said today.

On May 19, Moreno and two other out-of-state gang members accompanied two Elizabeth teenagers as they tracked an 18-year-old member of a rival gang to a backyard and fatally shot him as an initiation into MS-13, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said today.

Both Elizabeth teenagers are 17, Park said. She said one of the teenagers shot the victim, Jonathan Landaverde, while the second juvenile stood by to verify that the murder was committed. Landaverde was a member of the 18th Street Gang, Park said.

After a five month investigation by several agencies, Moreno, considered high-ranking with regional influence, was arrested along with two other out-of-state gang members and the two Elizabeth suspects. One of the Elizabeth juveniles was arrested in Texas, where Moreno had previously resided.

Moreno, 21, also known as ?Raro,? and two other suspects, Carlos ?Padrino? Amaya, 19, and Luis ?Perverso? Alfaro, 26, have each been charged with murder and gang criminality, both first-degree crimes, and recruitment for a criminal street gang and weapons offenses, both second-degree crimes.

Juvenile complaints, including many of the same allegations, have been filed against both Elizabeth teenagers. They are being held at detention centers in Texas.

Landaverde was shot twice in the head in a rear yard on the 600 block of South Park Street. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.

?This was a brazen, cold and calculated crime we believe was committed for multiple purposes, to send a message to rival gangs, to initiate a new member and to eliminate a rival,? Park said. "While this does not eradicate this gang, it curbs what easily could have been an increase in their power,? she said of the five arrests.

Moreno is being held at the Hudson County jail on $3.5 million bail, while Alfaro and Amaya are being held at the Union County jail on $2.5 million and $2 million bail respectively.

Park could not recall another "initiation" murder in the county. However, she said MS-13 has been active in the county and nationwide. In September 2013, Park and federal authorities announced sweeping arrests of the MS-13 gang in Plainfield.

Park lauded the efforts of the Elizabeth Police Department, and county Homicide Task Force and its supervisor, Michael Henn. She also extended thanks to the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Attorney?s Office in Newark, the Houston Police Department and the Harris County [Texas] Sheriff?s Office.

Family: Gang harassed victim found brutally slain in Central Islip
    Updated April 14, 2017 11:24 PM

The family of a high school honor student who was among four young men found brutally slain this week in a Central Islip park said Friday the 18-year-old recently had been the target of harassment by the MS-13 gang and feared for his safety.

The revelation came as police released the names of the dead, and publicly drew an even stronger link between the criminal syndicate with ties to El Salvador and a homicidal rampage that has shaken a community already beset with fears about its reach and violence.

?At this time, all indications are that this is the work of MS-13,? Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said Friday of an attack authorities previously said was carried out with a ?sharp or edged instrument.?

Sini, whose department is jointly investigating the crimes with the FBI, also confirmed a video was part of the probe and urged anyone who believed they had received such a file to contact authorities right away.

?We are aware of its origins and it?s certainly part of the investigation,? Sini said of the video.

The family of one of the victims, Justin Llivicura, 16, has said his girlfriend received a graphic video file Thursday that depicted dead bodies lying together, including the remains of their loved one. She got the video ? which the family shared with police ? a day after the discovery of the victims at about 8 p.m. Wednesday near a soccer field in a park at Clayton Street and Lowell Avenue.

Authorities identified the victims Friday as: Llivicura, of East Patchogue; Jorge Tigre, 18, of Bellport; Michael Lopez Banegas, 20, of Brentwood; and Jefferson Villalobos, 18, of Pompano Beach, Florida.

Tigre?s sister Monica, 20, said Friday that MS-13 had been preying on her brother, a Bellport High School senior who had dreamed of becoming a police officer.

?Almost every day they would flatten his tires. He always had to go get his car fixed because they would always ruin it at school,? she said. ?He never wanted to say anything to my mother. He was scared of getting hurt.?

The student?s family said he wasn?t in a gang and was an honor roll student who had tried to distance himself from anyone at school connected to MS-13, of which at least one of his friends was a member.

Tigre?s mother, Bertha Ullaguari, 43, was inconsolable Friday as she mourned her son. Family said he?d been one of six siblings, worked in a restaurant and always had a smile as he helped with chores around the house.

?He was my beautiful boy. Why did they kill him? My god, why?? Ullaguari said.

Family members of Villalobos and Banegas, who were cousins, also came together Friday to grieve for the young men ? who they said had no gang affiliations.

Villalobos had been visiting Banegas from Florida after arriving on Long Island last Friday with his sister, father and grandmother, said Yensy Fuentes ? a cousin of both those victims.

Fuentes, 20, of Florida, said Friday she had seen a video that showed both their bodies, and that Banegas? head was covered with a plastic bag.

A seconds-long video clip Newsday obtained from relatives of one of the victims appears to show the remains of multiple males, including one with an object near his head that appears consistent with her description.

Fuentes said family last saw the two cousins at 9 p.m. Tuesday, believing they left to play soccer at an indoor facility. Both were natives of Honduras, where their grandparents still live, according to family.

Villalobos? aunt, Marleni, also from Florida, said Friday that her nephew came to live in the United States three years ago. Playing soccer was his passion, she said through tears.

Sini said Friday authorities are ?making real progress in this investigation,? but declined to provide more details. He said police would ?devote the necessary resources to solve these brutal crimes.?

?All hands are on deck,? Sini said. He added that police also would enhance patrols in the area and said anyone with information shouldn?t fear approaching authorities because of immigration issues.

?If you come to us as a victim or a witness, we don?t even inquire into your immigration status,? Sini also said
at a news conference Friday evening.

One of the leading theories of investigators is that one of the four victims, or a close friend, had been close with MS-13 members and had angered them when he tried to back away, sources familiar with the investigation said Friday. They stressed authorities hadn?t reached any definitive conclusion about the reason for the killings.

Under the theory, the marked person ? whose identity was unclear ? was invited to the field and took friends with him for what he believed was some sort of party.

Once there, they were met by a number of MS-13 members who were armed with bats and machetes and pounced on the planned victim and his companions in a frenzy, the sources said. The MS-13 members assumed the others were potential witnesses to the crime or potential defenders of the targeted victim under this working theory of the crime.

Sources familiar with the investigation previously told Newsday the victims? bodies were mutilated with both blunt and sharpened weapons, presumably bats and machetes.

Some family and friends of the victims paid tribute to them Friday morning by laying crosses and flowers at the park.

?It just gives us peace in our hearts, and makes us feel better,? said Fuentes, the cousin of Banegas and Villalobos.

In Llivicura?s home, his family honored the homicide victim Friday with a display of candles with images of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Jesus, along with a framed photo of him as a 10-year-old boy.

His father, Marcelo Llivicura, said the 16-year-old loved listening to traditional Ecuadorean music and working on his white Scion ? still parked in the driveway Friday.

The man paused as photos of his son, a Bellport High student, and Tigre flashed onto his television screen during a News 12 Long Island report on the murders.

?There he is,? Llivicura said. ?The blue shirt.?

The father said the family often keeps the TV on to see if there are any updates on the slaying case.

Llivicura?s family last saw him Tuesday night, when he said he was going to a party in Manhattan. They reported to police that he was missing on Wednesday evening.

Tigre?s family has said they reported him missing Wednesday afternoon. His brother, William Tigre, 21, previously said he then got a call from a friend at 7:30 that evening saying his brother was hurt and at the park. He later spoke to investigators at the scene.

Authorities are offering a $25,000 ?fast cash reward,? to be paid within three days, for information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers.

The FBI has asked anyone with information to call the agency at 631-501-8600.

The discovery of the victims Wednesday comes six weeks after more than a half-dozen members of MS-13 were indicted in the killings of Brentwood teens Kayla Cuevas, 16, and Nisa Mickens, 15, and MS-13 member, Jose Pe?a-Hernandez, 18.

Sources have said previously that the street gang?s members are under pressure to ?put in work,? or kill rivals who belong to other gangs or people believed to have disrespected the gang.

There also are scores of gang members who have recently come to Long Island, mainly from El Salvador, who have to prove their worth to the syndicate with acts of violence, sources said.

The killings of Cuevas and Mickens and the discovery of several sets of skeletal remains of other young victims, prompted Suffolk police to execute a monthslong sweep that yielded more than 100 arrests.

Sini on Thursday had declared that law enforcement?s efforts locally against gang violence would be ?a long-term war.P?

    RECENT VICTIMS
Suffolk police have said they believe at least 11 homicides in Brentwood and Central Islip since September 2016 are gang-related.
Nisa Mickens, 15, found Sept. 13 in a wooded area in Brentwood.
Kayla Cuevas, 16, found Sept. 14 near where Mickens? body was found.
Oscar Acosta, 19, found Sept. 16 in a wooded, industrial area in Brentwood.
Miguel Garcia Mor?n, 15, found Sept. 21 in the same area near the LIRR tracks as Acosta?s remains.
Dewann A.S. Stacks, 34, found Oct. 13 in Brentwood. Stacks had been walking along American Boulevard when he was assaulted, police said.
Jose Pe?a-Hernandez, 18, found on Oct. 17 in a wooded area of the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in Brentwood.
Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla, 29, shot and killed inside a Central Islip deli on Jan. 30.
Four young men, found in a Central Islip park on Wednesday. Family members identified two of them as Justin Llivicura, 16, of East Patchogue, and Jorge Tigre, 18, of Bellport.

From last year (September) when everything started up again . . . two girls, friends, went missing. They found one then found the other the next day or so. In the investigation they started finding more bodies - one boy who had been missing for a few months.

    http://www.newsday.com/long-island/c...und-1.12314648

The bodies of two teenage girls — believed to be close friends at Brentwood High School and the victims of a “brutal attack” — were found in the community a short distance apart over a span of less than 24 hours, Suffolk police said Wednesday.

Police said the body of 15-year-old Nisa Mickens was discovered Tuesday night by a passing motorist. The following evening, there was another shocking discovery: a body matching the description of Nisa’s missing friend — Kayla Cuevas, 16.

Police said both victims appeared to have been beaten. No arrests had been made late Wednesday.

“Let me be extremely clear: This brutal attack of a teenager will not stand in Suffolk County,” Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said before the second body was found. “We are going to put an enormous amount of resources to catch this depraved perpetrator.”

The grim news stunned the community, with grieving friends and family members gathering on street corners to console one another.

Sini said Nisa, a junior who would have turned 16 Wednesday, “suffered at least 10 injuries, mostly to the head and face.”

An autopsy by the medical examiner’s office found evidence of lacerations and head trauma and determined the cause of death to be “homicide by assault,” Sini said.

Information on the other victim’s injuries was not disclosed by police.

While a positive identification hasn’t been made, homicide Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer said the Cuevas family had been notified.

Beyrer emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages, but said the girls probably were together when they were beaten.

“It appears they were both killed where they were found,” he added.

Detectives worked late into the night trying to piece together what happened. They are looking into whether the girls were grabbed as they walked on the street and probing possible motives, including whether the homicides are gang-related.

Sini said only that there are “some indications there was gang involvement” in the attack.

Nisa’s body was found on Stahley Street at Ray Court in Brentwood at about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday. The second body was found at 5:14 p.m. Wednesday in a wooded area off Ray Court, police said.

Beyrer said a woman who lives near the woods saw the body and called 911. Police had been searching the area with cadaver dogs and helicopters.

Kayla was with Nisa before she was killed, Sini said, and earlier in the day investigators encouraged anyone with information about Kayla’s whereabouts to come forward. Police posted a $5,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer or the safe return of Kayla.

On Wednesday, Nisa’s parents, Rob Mickens and Elizabeth Alvarado, visited a makeshift memorial on Stahley Street that had been decorated with flowers and balloons.

Mickens said his daughter had gone to visit Kayla and texted him around 8 p.m. Tuesday asking to be picked up later. Mickens said he went to get his daughter, but she wasn’t there. He said he called her cellphone, but got no answer.

He left a basketball at the memorial, recalling how his daughter loved the game and often wore a basketball jersey.

Nisa was thinking of becoming a nurse or veterinarian, her father said. “Already she had her goals set,” he said.

Alvarado said Nisa didn’t want much for her birthday — just three balloons, brought to her school.

The mother said her daughter was “the best thing that ever happened to me. . . . There was nothing that she couldn’t do.”

The bubbly teen loved snacking on Doritos and cinnamon buns and had conquered her fear of roller coasters during a recent trip to an amusement park, according to Stefanny Fernandez, a close friend.

“She had a bright future — everything going for her,” said Fernandez, 24, of Central Islip.

“With a heavy heart,” Brentwood schools Superintendent Levi McIntyre sent a letter to parents Wednesday informing them of the grim news.

McIntyre urged parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times and said school counselors would be available “to provide emotional support to students and staff.”

Outside the home of Kayla’s family, more than a dozen friends and neighbors gathered Wednesday night, some hugging, others crying. The girl’s older sister was taken away in an ambulance, apparently overcome with grief.

    “Everybody’s mourning,” one youth said.

Kayla’s parents were too distraught to talk, friends said.

Suffolk County Legis. Monica Martinez, who represents Brentwood, said she knew both girls when they were at East Middle School, where she had been an administrator.

“They were good girls, always together, rambunctious,” Martinez said at the crime scene. “There are no words for how I feel in my heart. We have to come together as a community,” she said.

A group of the girls’ friends gathered at one corner and said they learned of Nisa’s death when school officials announced it over the loudspeaker and asked students to bow their heads for a moment of silence. Later they learned through social media that another girl’s body had been found.

One of Nisa’s 11th-grade friends said the teenager called her about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to ask her what she was doing.

Nisa and friends had planned to go out to a restaurant Saturday to celebrate her Sweet 16, the friend said.

Residents remain on edge in Brentwood, Central Islip
    Updated September 19, 2016 9:12 PM
    By Joye Brown joye.brown@newsday.com

The discovery of skeletal human remains in Brentwood Friday likely won’t do much to quell community concern over this year’s spike in killings in Brentwood and neighboring Central Islip.

Neither will any more short-term efforts to bring gang violence in the communities under control.

This is all probably new for Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini, who spoke to residents at a vigil last week and who is expected to stand before the community again, Tuesday night, at a school district meeting.

But for Brentwood and Central Islip residents, gang-related murders and violence is something they’ve suffered through before.

In 2010, there were six murders in six months. Then-County Executive Steve Levy, in a meeting at a community church, promised change.

In 2012, Lenny Tucker, then head of the Brentwood Association of Concerned Citizens, traveled west to Huntington Station to hear newly elected County Executive Steve Bellone say he had redeployed the county’s anti-gang officers to the county’s seven police precincts, rather than having one centralized unit.

Part of that reorganization pulled detectives — credited with solving some of the area’s most brutal gang-related murders — from a federal gang task force. Less than a year later, Bellone reversed course and Suffolk rejoined the federal group.

How did those changes play out in the community?

Last week, some of the residents gathered at curbside memorials for Nisa Mickens and Kayla Cuevas, students at Brentwood High School’s Ross Center, said they had noticed a decrease in gang activity a few years ago — only to see it ramp up again, with the deaths of Mickens and Cuevas, who were beaten to death.

“We had some relief for a couple of years, and now that’s gone,” said Robert Aviles, who has lived in Brentwood for more than 50 years.

Police found one set of skeletal human remains in a wooded area off the Regis Park neighborhood in Brentwood on Friday, a police department spokesman confirmed after the department issued a news release Monday.

The spokesman, Justin Meyers, said the remains were at the medical examiners office. He said he would have no comment on their condition, or whether they were related to last week’s slayings.

The remains were found in an area west of Emjay Boulevard, a winding stretch of road that reaches south from Suffolk Avenue to Eisenhower Avenue. On a map, Emjay looks like the left-brace symbol on a keyboard, separating a residential neighborhood from an industrial park.

On one corner of Eisenhower — one of a grid of streets named after eleven generals — a couple of houses are covered in gang graffiti. But there was no sign of activity at those houses Saturday morning, and most neighbors appeared to be content going about their business.

Still, should the medical examiner determine foul play as the cause of death for the remains, that would bring the number of deaths investigated by police in Brentwood and Central Islip to seven, so far this year.

Meyers said increased police presence would ensure that the community’s streets, and schools, are safe.

The bigger job, however, is to ensure they stay that way.

Suffolk police: Gang members rounded up after remains found
    Updated October 20, 2016 9:33 PM
    By Nicole Fuller nicole.fuller@newsday.com

Suffolk police have found the skeletal remains of a Brentwood teenager ? a known MS-13 gang member ? who police believe was beaten to death by gang members, police said Thursday.

The discovery of the remains of Jose Pe?a-Hernandez, 18 ? unearthed by Suffolk police on Monday in a wooded area on the grounds of the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center ? marks the sixth gang-related homicide by assault in Brentwood discovered by police in the last month.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said Thursday that investigators have rounded up more than 30 MS-13 gang members since the gang-related beating deaths of two teenage girls last month, in what Sini has described as a mission to ?decimate? the violent gang that has terrorized the community.

Sini said police, in conjuction with federal authorities, have put five ?violent? gang members in federal custody, and another 25 gang members have been arrested on state charges since Sept. 13. A sixth gang member was taken into federal custody soon after the slayings.

Pe?a-Hernandez, who according to school district officials dropped out of Brentwood High School?s Sonderling Center in 2014, was a known MS-13 gang member who was reported missing June 13, police said.

Pe?a-Hernandez is one of three teenage boys who were reported missing this year and whose skeletal remains were found in the last month near the psychiatric center in an apparent MS-13 dumping ground. Police believe all three homicides were likely perpetrated by gang members, but wouldn?t say whether they believe the killings were committed by the same person or persons.

The teen boys? remains were found following the gang-related killings of Brentwood High School students Nisa Mickens, 15, and Kayla Cuevas, 16 ? best friends whose deaths sparked both community outrage and an aggressive police response.

The commissioner would not identify the alleged gang members or specify whether the charges are related to the six deaths, except to say that those in federal custody were facing RICO charges, a federal statute created to prosecute the mafia that in recent years has been used to target street gangs.

Sini, who before becoming police commissioner was a federal prosecutor, called the statute ?a good tool to dismantle criminal enterprises.?

The commissioner also declined to directly link any intelligence that may have been culled from the 31 arrests to the discovery of the bodies of the three teen boys, but said, ?you don?t just stumble upon skeletal remains.?

Sini said breaks in the cases were ?a result of additional intelligence that we?re collecting as this investigation progresses.?

?We didn?t find him by accident,? Sini said. ?We didn?t find those remains by accident. We are putting an enormous amount of pressure on the criminal element in the Brentwood area.?

In the days after the killings of Cuevas and Mickens, Suffolk police investigators began conducting grid searches with K-9?s and shovels on the grounds of Pilgrim and in an industrial park area nearby.

When the teenage boys went missing, police believed early on in the investigations that ?foul play was involved,? Sini said, and Chief of Detectives Gerard Gigante transferred the missing persons cases to the Major Case Unit for investigation. Sini declined to specify what indicated foul play to investigators. One of the six gang-related killings involved an adult, Dewann A.S. Stacks, 34, who was beaten to death on Oct. 13 where he had been walking along American Boulevard, police said.

Family members of Pe?a-Hernandez could not be reached for comment.

Cops: Reward in slayings increased to $10G

?This is very devastating news on our community here to trying to heal from the other murders we currently have,? superintendent Levi McIntyre said in an interview. ?This again puts us in a very difficult situation, particularly to know he was a former student of ours. We just have to work with our community in order to support each other and try to make our schools safe.?

He added that security remains at a ?heightened? level. ?They should not be afraid to come to school because our schools are safe,? McIntyre said.

Citing added security measures brought in September after the discovery of the first bodies, McIntyre said, ?things are quiet and calm in our schools.?

Officials: MS-13 gang members charged in killings of Brentwood teen girls
    Updated March 2, 2017 10:06 PM
By Robert E. Kessler and Nicole Fuller

    HIGHLIGHTS
Gang members ?meting out their own death penalty,? U.S. attorney says
Kayla Cuevas, 16, and Nisa Mickens, 15, were found slain in September
More than a half-dozen members of the MS-13 street gang ?whose primary mission is murder? were indicted Thursday in the brutal killings of two teenage Brentwood girls and a fellow gang member ? part of a wave of violence that has terrorized the community, officials said.

The Brentwood teens, Kayla Cuevas, 16, and Nisa Mickens, 15, were killed in September by a group of gang members ?swinging baseball bats and machetes.? Eastern District United States Attorney Robert Capers said Mickens was beaten so badly that her face was ?almost unrecognizable.?

?For far too long on Long Island, members of the MS-13 have been meting out their own death penalty,? Capers said at a news conference early Thursday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Central Islip.

Capers said the slayings ?exemplify the depravity of a gang whose primary mission is murder.?

In the months before those slayings, Cuevas ?was involved in a series of disputes with members and associates of the MS-13, including disputes over social media,? federal prosecutors John Durham, Raymond Tierney and Paul Scotti said in court papers.

The prosecutors said four of those indicted as well as two juveniles charged in the case had gone ?hunting for rival gang members to kill.? They inadvertently came across Cuevas, and her friend Mickens, and killed them, prosecutors said.

?Kayla Cuevas, she ran for her life. She was beaten about her face and body with baseball bats and machetes,? Capers said.

The prosecutors said that the MS-13 member, Jose Pena-Hernandez, 18, was killed because he was suspected of ?violating the gang rules in several ways, including talking to law enforcement.? Pena-Hernandez was also marked because he was believed to be gay, sources said.

From left, Brentwood High School juniors Nisa Mickens,15, and Kayla Cuevas, 16, were killed in what a police official called a "brutal attack." They were found dead, less than 24 hours apart, in mid-September 2016.

The skeletal remains of Pena-Hernandez, found on the grounds of the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, ?bore the marks of repeated stab wounds,? Capers said.

?Whether you live in Brentwood or the Hamptons, you have a right to safety and security in your neighborhood,? FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney Jr. said. ?That?s why we?re here today, and it?s the reason we?re not going away.?

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said that the day the girls ?were heinously murdered,? the department ?made a commitment to their families and to the residents of Brentwood that justice would be served.?

The 41-count indictment was the culmination of a multi-jurisdictional effort targeting a violent gang that ?continues its efforts to expand and entrench itself in our communities, both by sending gang members to illegally enter the United States from Central America, and by recruiting new members from our schools and neighborhoods,? Capers said.

Involved in the six-month investigation were federal prosecutors, the FBI?s Long Island gang task force and Suffolk and Nassau police.

Two other juvenile gang members, not publicly identified, were also charged in the September killings of the two teenage girls and one other juvenile was charged in the October killing of Pena-Hernandez, sources said. Juveniles are not usually publicly identified in federal court proceedings.

While federal law allows the prosecution of youths under 18 as adults for violent crimes, it would take a judge?s ruling to permit such action.

Two other adult members of MS-13 who were charged were already in custody and two others charged are being sought in the killing of Pena-Hernandez, officials said.

The new charges were added to an indictment last year charging five members of the gang with four other murders between 2013 and 2015, officials said. As many as three to six other recent unsolved killings and disappearances of people in the area may also involve MS-13, sources say.

Investigators believe the recent violence is related to the arrival in the Brentwood area of about a dozen members of MS-13 from Central America in their teens or early 20s, the sources said.

The relative newcomers are steeped in the extreme violence of gang culture in countries such as El Salvador and they have found a niche because federal prosecutions have taken a number of longtime MS-13 members off the streets, the sources said.

Ten were residents who came in to the country illegally, two were United States citizens and one was a green card holder, Capers said. The cases were combined in one superseding indictment.

Charged publicly yesterday in the killings of Cuevas and Mickens were: Alexi Saenz, 22, of Central Islip, the leader of an MS-13 chapter or clique; his brother, Jairo Saenz, 19, of Central Islip, the no. 2 in the clique; Enrique Portillo, 19, of Brentwood; and Selvin Chavez, 19, also of Brentwood.

They pleaded not guilty at arraignment before U.S. District Judge Joseph Bianco in federal court in Central Islip and were held without bail as a danger to the community and a risk of flight.

Their attorneys declined to comment afterward, as did Durham, Tierney and Scotti.

Because the four are eligible for life in prison or the death penalty, the judge said he would also appoint for each a second counsel who specializes in death-penalty cases, as is typical in such proceedings.

The two people charged publicly in the killing of Pena-Hernandez, German Cruz,18, of Brentwood, and Elmer Alexander Lopez, 19, of Central Islip, are scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment at a later date, according to officials.

Mickens? father, Robert, 39, learned about the arrests shortly before 9:30 a.m. when a Newsday reporter called him for comment.

?Wow!? Mickens said. ?I hadn?t heard anything. I?m shocked because usually cases like this take a long time, and this is moving pretty fast.? Mickens said the arrests will bring some relief to himself and his wife, Elizabeth Alvarado, and Nisa?s siblings, brother Andres, 22, and sister Eliza, 25.

?It?s justice,? Mickens added. ?That?s all we want is justice, and for this gang violence to end in America and across the world.?

Federal agents and Suffolk police began an intensified crackdown on gang members in the Brentwood area after the September killings.

Police officials said that since the killings of the two girls, 125 MS-13 members have been charged with state crimes, including drug and gun possession, and seven have been handed over to federal officials for federal prosecutions.

After the Cuevas and Mickens killings, investigators found the skeletal remains of three teenage boys, in or near the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center grounds, two of whom had been reported missing several months before ? and all possibly linked to further MS-13 killings.

In addition to Pena-Hernandez, those reported missing were Oscar Acosta, 19, of Brentwood, a student at the Ross Center, whose remains were found on Sept. 16; and Miguel Garcia Moran, 15, of Brentwood, a student at Brentwood High?s Sonderling Center, whose remains were found on Sept. 21.

Also in October, Dewann A.S. Stacks, 34, of Brentwood, was found beaten to death on American Boulevard, in what police said was a gang-related killing.

The gang-related violence continued this year, police said, when Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla, 29, of Brentwood, was shot to death on Jan. 30 in a Central Islip deli on the Brentwood border.

Since 2002, federal prosecutors working with the FBI task force and local police have convicted several hundred MS-13 members, officials have said. The MS-13 membership, however, is often refilled in several years by ?the brothers? of those convicted, referring to younger gang members from Central America, sources have said.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – Before a judge decided that the 17-year-old girl accused of stabbing a 15-year-old girl to death would be tried as an adult, an FBI agent testified that the suspect told the victim she would "see you in hell," reports the Washington Post.

Venus Romero Iraheta is accused in the stabbing death of Damaris Alexandria Reyes Rivas, apparently linked to the notoriously violent gang MS-13. CBS affiliate WUSA reports that police believe Damaris, who was from Gaithersburg, Md., was likely killed in January but her body was found in Virginia a month later.

WUSA reports that Iraheta is one of 10 suspects charged in the murder of Damaris. Police originally listed her as charged with abduction and gang participation. Investigators have called Iraheta an associate of the gang.

Both Iraheta and Damaris were originally from El Salvador, where the MS-13 gang is headquartered.

According to the Post, Iraheta and Damaris had both been romantically involved with 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas, who law enforcement says was killed by MS-13 gang members around New Years 2017. The newspaper reports that a search warrant states Iraheta thought Damaris may have lured Sosa Rivas to the location where he was killed. His body was found on the banks of the Potomac River.

A search warrant says Sosa Rivas was targeted by MS-13 leaders because he was claiming to be a leader of the gang, the Post reports.

The Post reports that Damaris had run away from home in December 2016 and become involved with the gang. According to testimony during Wednesday's court hearing Iraheta stabbed Damaris 13 times after she was allegedly lured to a park in the snow by an 18-year-old named Jose Castillo Rivas, who is also charged in the case.

Police: MS-13 members in Maryland stab man more than 100 times and decapitate him

Police say a man whose body was found in a grave at Wheaton Regional Park was wearing this sweatshirt with a church logo on it at the time of his death. He was stabbed more than 100 times, police said. (Montgomery County Police)

By Dan Morse and Dana Hedgpeth November 22 at 2:47 PM

As many as 10 members of the MS-13 street gang lured a man into a park in Wheaton, Md., spoke with one another over walkie-talkies as he arrived, stabbed him more than 100 times, cut off his head, and buried him in a grave dug ahead of time deep in the woods, officials said.

One of the alleged attackers, Miguel ?Timido? Angel Lopez-Abrego, 19, was arrested recently in North Carolina, and was held on no-bond status after his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Montgomery County.

The gang members allegedly had planned the killing for two weeks, according to court documents.

The victim was stabbed, decapitated, dismembered, and ?his heart had been excised from his chest and thrown into the grave,? police said in court records. An autopsy ruled his death a homicide from ?sharp force injuries,? police said.

Police have arrested and charged Miguel A. Lopez-Abrego, 19, with first-degree murder in connection with a MS-13 gang killing. ( Montgomery County Police)

Detectives learned about the killing in early September from an informant, charging documents state, and about a specific site to search in Wheaton Regional Park, where they found the grave and remains.

The victim?s identity has yet to be confirmed, police said.

On the day of the killing, one gang member allegedly ?waited near the edge of the wood line with a handheld, walkie-talkie radio to alert? other suspects when the victim arrived, according to court records.

Police wrote in court records that they think Lopez-Abrego was the first attacker to stab the victim in the chest with a 15-inch knife.

The charging documents do not cite a motive for the killing.

In late September, patrol officers for Montgomery County stopped a vehicle in which Lopez-Abrego was the passenger, police officials said. At the time, Lopez-Abrego was interviewed by detectives and he denied he was involved in the death of the man at the park, the court records state.

Police said they tried to locate Lopez-Abrego after that interview but could not until he was found Nov. 4 in North Carolina with two other reported MS-13 gang members from the D.C. area. How and where he was located in North Carolina is not detailed in the charging records.

Lopez-Abrego did not speak during the court appearance. Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a statement saying ?Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, a citizen and national of El Salvador, is illegally in the U.S. and currently in immigration proceedings. On Nov. 4, ICE lodged a detainer on Mr. Lopez-Abrego with the Avery County Sheriff?s Department in North Carolina after his arrest by local authorities.?

The victim killed in the Wheaton park was described by police as a Hispanic man possibly from Annapolis, Md. He was about 5-foot-2 and weighed about 126 pounds. He had short, dark brown hair and was missing a bottom tooth near the front of his mouth. Police said the missing tooth would have been obvious when he was speaking or smiling.

Authorities said they think the man was killed in the ?early spring? of this year.

At the time of the killing, the victim was wearing a gray sweatshirt with ?First United Methodist Church Laurel? written on the upper left side. A rosary or necklace was also found on his body, said police who had previously distributed photos of the victim?s sweatshirt and muddied blue shorts in an effort to identify his remains.

The brutal murder at the Wheaton park is a part of a resurgence of killings in Montgomery County that police and prosecutors attribute to MS-13.

In one case, assailants armed with knives lured a 34-year-old to his already-dug grave. A 22-year-old also was taken to a wooded area and ordered to his knees before he was shot in the face. And in another case, an 18-year-old was ambushed near a stream and stabbed and stoned before he died under a bridge of the Capital Beltway.

what a cunt. The poor woman already had gone through enough. Is the placement of the memorial really a bother? Such a bother, that you had to kill the poor mother of the slain girl? FFS
