I wouldn't say paps hurt, really. Just sort of uncomfortable. It's hard to explain, but I'd say don't worry about it, honestly. As long as it's just the smear, and you aren't getting your cervix clipped or anything fancy, it should just be one of the most awkward and uncomfortable experiences of your life, but no pain  My first time, I was soooo nervous and embarrassed, but you get used to it.
I apologize if this is no help.

nery pretty much hit the nail on the head, tough maybe that's not the best way to put it.
they're uncomfortable at best. usually quick and totally painless. don't go in if you're crampy or anything, i wouldn't recommend that. make sure to get one annually, that is the best advice i can give.
ps my sister has her period. ![]()

And yes, what the others said. It's quick and easy. Try to relax - I find it more uncomfortable if I tense. Less than 5 minutes and you're done.
Do you open really wide during a smear? I have always wondered how that works. I mean i know you spread your legs but does the doc help open up the area in any other way?

Interesting. What do you think was going on? Was she making up being pregnant or do you think she's actually having a miscarriage?
FWIW, I take a book or magazine along to read during the pap so I don't have to just stare at the ceiling. Like everyone else has said, it's just a bit uncomfortable, not painful, and a bit weird to have someone all up in there.
And like Nery, I'm paranoid that I'm going to get pinched, but it's never happened.

i can only assume she was since she tested positive, twice. i think she really wants to be pregnant, since she isn't now i believe she will be very soon. it is hard to say though, honesty isn't something she is all that good with. she also has been very unhealthy recently, she lost a ton of weight pretty quickly and has, i would say, pretty severe depression due to her father's death and a million other factors.
i've never been pinched. but even after all these years i'm not convinced i won't be. ha.
I've had a pinch or two, then I realized that men have no idea what going on with my bidness down there, and switched to a female gyno.

We have butterflies on the ceiling at mine.

I have to go tomorrow for another colposcopy. I should change my facebook status then: "Catherine is right now having little pieces of her cervix removed, it hurts :( "
Awesome.
I have seen the future and I'm fairly relieved to say, it looks nothing like me.

I'm really sorry -- it sounds like she's having a rough time. I'm sure it's not easy being supportive if she can't be completely honest with you. I hope she'll decide to get some help soon.

UGH! I hope it goes ok. They won't actually do a biopsy, though, since you're pregnant, right?
I had ONE biopsy done by a male doctor who said I was going to feel a small pinch. A small pinch isn't enough to make me hang off the ceiling by my fingernails. Fucker. I've never trusted male OB/Gyns since then.

Are they going to give you something to take before you go in? Make sure to ask if they didn't suggest. They can at least write your script out for pain medication early and you can take a couple before you get in. Or, if you are a nervous person like me, maybe a script for a couple of xanax. I had NOTHING. The whole 'numbing' process with the needle is what scared me the most.
Also, be super diligent with the antibiotics. Although, I took mine..I wasn't the best at taking them as directed. That's what caused me to come down with the nasty infection that turned into PID and I ended up in the hospital.
I'm sure you know this stuff already, I'm just suffering from PTSD from mine

THIS. When I was in the hospital and was examined by a female OB/Gyn and told her how I had nothing, she was like, "WTF???"
I've always had male OB's. I hate to switch because he delivered Marisa and knows the ins and outs of me (literally) but I think it's time for a change.

They won't give me anything since I'm pregnant, they didn't give me anything last time either (when I wasn't pregnant). He seems like the sadistic type who likes to see women in pain. I took it like a champ and didn't make a sound until I got to my car and called my mom. "Mommy, it huuuuuurttttss. What the fuuuuuccccckkkk? Waah."

Whaaaa?
I remember they made me take a pregnancy test before hand. When I busted my ass on the sidewalk when I was about 8 months pregnant, my doctor gave me vicodin. I'm assuming it was safe to take for the fetus since Marisa isn't a slowie. I would seriously demand something.
I also did the same thing when I got in the car, immediately called my mom. However, I was crying before and during the procedure. I think they took me out of the waiting room early on purpose so I wouldn't scare the other women. When my doctor was like, "Oh you're nervous..you should have called and we would have written you an anti anxiety script" I was like, "OH THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION NOW". I didn't even cry/scream when I gave birth. I remember how he said I was super good about going through labor. Then I totally wimped out on this.

Dang! If it were me, I'd be telling them that they'd better not snip anything off my cervix until I'm no longer pregnant and they can drug me to the gills. And if they didn't want to drug me? "Hello, New Dr? I'd like to make an appointment."
I can go through childbirth with no drugs, no problem, but if someone's diddling around with my cervix, I don't want to feel it or think about it.

Hell yeah, you could listen to your iPod! You could probably even sing along and it wouldn't make a difference to the doc. He or she will let you know if your attention is needed.
And mum's don't lie! That whole thing about getting pregnant by kissing boys is 100% true.

Where are you at? I have the BEST doc in the chicago area. Gynecologic oncologist, just got a colpo for the first time without insurance.. he charged me $21. He's an Angel. Besides that, I had a woman Nurse practioner before him who BUTCHERED me during a colpo, so don't choose your provider based on gender, ladies! The women will hurt ya too ![]()

i'm getting my mirena out january 5th! i'm so nervous. i will be taking klonopin and percocet before my appointment. i'm thinking i'm just going to stay off bc for a few months and let my body get back to normal and then get on the pill but i need some suggestions. i think someone here recommended estrostep? what are some other good bc pills that don't have horrible side effects like craziness and depression and all that?
I've never had a colposcopy and I am terrified. When do I have to get one? Do I ever?
