What are the symptoms of PCOS? I would look it up, but anything I look up on the internetz sounds similiar to everything else. I would like an in-depth perspective
    [/quote]

My personal symptoms were the typical ones (not the same for everyone, mind you, TPT [I believe] has said she has it too but by looking at her physically you'd never guess):

    - Very heavy periods, but very spontaneous and probably only 2-3 times a year.
    - Hair where there shouldn't be hair on a woman - yes I've done laser hair removal ($4k worth) but it's well well worth it.
Weight that comes on very very easily, but is hard as hell to get off.  The thing is, once you LOOOOSE weight, the symptoms tend to get better.
    - Problems with fertility is also a symptom, I never tested that - only accidently found out that I'm not completely infertile by taking the metformin.
    - Also, you can get an internal ultrasound done on your lady organs, mine have gobs and gobs of cysts.

That's about all I know about it, it's kind of like a HERE WE'LL PUT YOU ON SOME BIRTH CONTROL - TRY TO LOSE WEIGHT GOOD LUCK - type of deal really.   :|

Yeah, infertility is a huge symptom (tell that to my 5 kids  and the several pregnancies I miscarried), excessive hair, weight gain, heavy periods. I just want to be able to go out in public when I'm ragging and not have to wear a super plus tampon and an overnight pad and STILL manage to bleed on my pants because I was out for 2 hours.  :2eyesbleed:

Do you know how they find out if you have PCOS, just by the symptoms?. Because I told the obgyn that I have infrequernt heavy periods & gained weight and all he did was give me medication to induce a period and that was it. I guess he did normal tests and they came back normal.

Thank you, I hope I'm just irregular. I know alot of people with PCOS need IVF to have kids & it scares me.

The only thing I'm on right now is mega doses of vitamin D3. I have to take one 50,000iu cap twice a week because your level should be 40 or more and mine was like 14.  :2huh:
The doc did mention metformin but any other meds are pending until we get the results from a bunch of blood work.

Re: Birth Control, tampons, and other women's stuff. Beware!

So, I read a little bit about teens when their periods first start, that they're not every month to start *whew*. Me and my kid were talking about it, and I told her if she has sex, she will not know if she's pregnant or not. She promised me that she would tell me if she does ever feel the inkling to have sex so we can get her on BC and buy her some of her own condoms to have, is this a bad idea? The condoms?

Also, when is THE time to take girls in for their first pap? I'm still a little torn over Gardasil, cos a local girl had serious problems with it. However, I'd like her to be protected, just in case. I know Emmie is a huge advocate, and she knows her shit, so I just may do it. Emmie you'd also be happy that she is willing to try the diva cup, if I do it as well. She had a bad experience with a tampon. She put it in, and felt sick. I don't know if it was panic or not. But being as athletic as she is, she needs something that'll be inside. God forbid her pad falls out when she's running the 800m!  I'm also on the fence of cloth maxis after Nat mentioned it.

I just hope that my girls don't think I'm telling them they can have sex if they want to. I made sure to tell her I'd rather her NOT have sex, also, I told her my experiences with it in high school (which weren't good at all, but whose are?), and she told me not to worry, that she'd tell me for sure. Plus she said watching Teen Mom and all the drama that happens on that show makes her wanna cross her legs and never uncross em near a boy

I'd just rather be open with my girls so I'm not a grandma too soon. Sara really has no interest in dating yet (well cept for ONE boy). But Skyler, she's popular at school, and already has somewhat of a boyfriend that comes to the door every Valentines Day and brings her a ring. (Awwww!)  She's the one I'm really worried about when she gets older. She's as boy crazy as they come.

That's just a cruel trick nature plays on teen boys so they can share the joy of periods.

haha! I wondered why I saw ya post in here.  Ahhh, boys and men alike get to share the joy via PMS though. She has it BAD. She even swore in front of me, TWICE last week cos she was so pissed off at her sister. I'm all like "whoaaaa!" She got NO Eminem earpleasure for a few days. Hell, I listened to worse than Eminem growing up, and didn't cuss in front of my parents till I was older, and that was only my Mom. My Dad woulda still knocked the snot out of me

Bettie, I think the condoms are a good idea. You said you don't want her having sex, but I would just try to make sure she's not scared of your opinion enough to not talk to you about it.

That's exactly how I hope I come across to her. I mean, there is worse than just babies. I think the distance she keeps from boys comes from the STD pics I showed her when she started her period.

Re: Birth Control, tampons, and other women's stuff. Beware!

I don't know if her dad is gonna agree about the condoms, he's like, you have sex I'll kill you! I just feel this day and age it's an appropriate thing to teach the kids/teens. Thanks for the input guise :)

ND haha, you should have seen her dry heaving when I was showing her this stuff and telling her how it'd burn when she peed and what not. I just may be raising her to be a Nun.   I just wish my mom had told me when I was that age. She actually caught me in the act, and nothing was ever said about it after she told the guy to get out or the police were coming!  :-o

She also found a positive preggo test that I thought I'd hidden, she (said she) threw up but didn't say anything either way, and I ended up miscarrying. Luckily I didn't have to have a D&C cos I couldn't have gone to her to even ask.

I think if it weren't presented as such a taboo subject, things would be better.

Re: Birth Control, tampons, and other women's stuff. Beware!

bettie, i had weird irregular periods when i was young.  hell i still do.  and my 20 yr old sister only bleeds every couple of months.  my mom went months without periods even in her mid twenties after she had me.  after that she stayed on BC just to know she would be regular.

and i'm pro-gardasil just because hpv is so prevalent.  i am pretty much the only girl i know that doesn't have it and i'd prefer it to stay that way so i'm getting my shots.  they do make me sick when i get them.  a lot of my girlfriends only got the first one or two shots because they didn't like the fact that they felt ill for two days after the fact and the shots burn.  the nurse who gives me mine warms them up for me and i've never had a problem getting the actual shot itself, she says it just burns because they keep them refrigerated.

i understand some folk's aversions to vaccines.  i have my own qualms about them, but if i'm gonna end up with the virus in me one way or another i'd prefer an inactive strain.  i'll take being sick to my stomach for a few days over cancer and/or warts any fucking day of the week.

i love my fucking diva cup.  i've had the same one almost six years, hell maybe longer.  its much healthier and you only have to worry about it twice a day.  i only empty mine twice and i'm a bleeder.

My issue with the Gardasil is we have no idea what it's going to be causing down the line. I feel more comfortable with my daughter just having pap smears yearly and not having some weirdo stuff they probably know very little about injected into her body.

yeah, i thought about it long and hard before i decided to get it.  but i've accepted my role as a guinea pig to modern medicine, just short of the stuff that creeps me out and i don't agree with that is.  i still see my medicine man when i need something actually fixed and not just a band-aide.

Girls down the road will appreciate your sacrifice.   I feel like on the off chance she does get cervical cancer it can be cured with surgery, but if something happens because of this shot it may not be fixable. The benefit doesn't outweigh the risk in my mind. Now something like meningitis vaccine I feel more comfortable with because if she gets that she can be dead overnight, so it's more worth the risk to me.

Of course she's 18 now. I could let her decide and dump the responsibility and blame on her.

see, they're linking HPV to lots of other cancers these days.  throat/mouth cancers and penile/rectal cancers.  surely there is still a risk of any other kind of cancer but i'm interested to see what some further research on HPV will being over the next decade or so.  its the warts that really scare me.  i had a wart on my finger once and it was fucking horrible.  i cannot imagine having them elsewhere.  fuck that.  :|  obviously i'll still be getting my annual exams.

I am late to the party...I also have PCOS, and had to use Clomid to get pregnant with my son. After I had him I lost a bunch of weight and of course the 1 in 4 times a year I ovulate I got pregnant with my daughter. I am not regular at all and I stay on birth control just because I want to be regular!

Also, Hellbettie, I plan on being the same way with my kids. I will let them know that they can come to me, but they are going to know EVERYTHING about the subject. STDs, pregnancy, etc. I think buying condoms is a good thing...cuz if you think about it, if people are going to have sex, they are going to have sex whether they have a condom or not. You are doing a good thing by making sure she knows to be safe about it.

Emmie-What is a diva cup??? I have never heard of it, but I am interested.
