I tossed condoms in my son's christmas stockings when the were 15ish. It made for a light hearted opening to a more in depth conversation during Christmas vacation. Also we open our stockings on Christmas morning with just the 4 of us so it didn't embarass them at all.
As they got older if we went to the pharmacy to pick up something up for a school project or a prescription I would bring them to the condom section and say pick some up while we're here!

Thats a good way to be open and honest though. I'd rather know my kid is safe and has a smaller risk of getting pregnant/ getting someone pregnant or getting diseases.

What's the age for a pap test there or does it differ from state to state? Its 25 here and I think its bullshit. My doctor won't even think about forwarding me for one.

Wow. I think the standard here is 1) as soon as you are sexually active or 2) age 18.

25? i was 16, i was going on BC and they require you have a pap for that first. otherwise i think you should start getting them as soon as you're sexually active.
has anyone seen the movie teeth? i will never have a pelvic exam without thinking of that movie ever again.
From the CDC:
When to Get Screened
You should start getting regular Pap tests at age 21, or within three years of the first time you have sex—whichever happens first. The Pap test, which screens for cervical cancer, is one of the most reliable and effective cancer screening tests available.

I don't think there is any age the insurance won't pay for if there is a supporting diagnosis. I think I started around 16ish because you had to get them to get birth control pills.
Thanks emmie..I will read up on it!! Whatever saves money on tampons! They are expensive.
Were you ever regular or did you always get your period 4 times a year?
No I was never regular. It wasn't until I started trying to get pregnant that I actually realized it though. Most women have like 28 day or so cycles and mine are like 90 days, so it's like once every 3 months that I actually ovulate and have a period. But ya know, once my OB/GYN put me on Metformin and Clomid, it worked and I got pregnant on the first round. So even if you have PCOS and have trouble getting pregnant, it may be an easy fix! I have 2 beautiful babies, one I needed help to conceive, and the 2nd I got lucky.
Hayalet-I started getting them when I was sexually active. So around 17 or 18. I get them every year because cervical cancer runs in my family. I have never heard of having to wait until you are 25, that is crazy!
Dood!! Sorry for the double post, but I think I am going to order that diva cup. It seems WAY cleaner, AND you don't have to take it out nearly as often. Reading the raves on the website, I think I am sold. I am so ordering one. It doesn't hurt to at least try, right!? Ooh I am excited! I do have a question though, they make it sound kind of hard to put in and take out, is it easy to learn, emmie?

yes, it is very easy to use. just make sure to pinch it when you remove it to release the suction or you might have some issues. ;)
let me know how you like it, i think you'll love it!
I am going to be asking my oncologist about this but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about breast cancer patients using birth control. My cancer is hormone related and I am not sure if there is something out there that I should be using.. I know nothing about birth control.

Let me know how it works for you (haha in the least creepy way possible). I've pondered this several times, but can't decide if it would be way messier and gross.

I can't tell if it's disturbing or a great idea.
My mom MADE me have my first pap when I was 18, even though I was still a huge virgin and didn't really feel like I needed one. She had some sort of fixation on having to have one when you turn 18. I just think she liked to torture me.
Also my periods were crazy irregular when I was a teenager. I never knew when I was going to get it.

are you on it now? i would think drs would tell you what is ok to take and what might not be. i would think you'd be fine with a progesterone only bc like depo, or a POP, or implanon. of course there are hormone free options as well.
if you take any bc that is estrogen free it is always a good idea to take calcium and vit d to avoid bone loss.

Ok I will do that! Only I am going to give you the nitty, gritty details.Ha ha just kidding.
I have been sexually active since i was 15 and have been on bc since i was 16. Yeah it's 25 here, so that's 9 years past the legal sexual age, even if you go private NO doctor will do it. It's so frickin stone age.
My doctor personally disagrees with it, but if he gets the nurse to do it, no lab will test it. Jade Goody's death opened the debate up again but i doubt it'll change.
I couldn't explain or sum it up better than this woman the same age as me- http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/mar/05/health-health
Too old for the HPV jab, too young for the test...

that makes complete sense.
i'm 30 and getting the HPV vaccine. i talked to my dr about it today (i've been getting the shots through planned parenthood, not her) and she said i'm the only person she has heard complain about feeling ill after the shots. i have two friends who said the same thing, that they were ill feeling for a day or too after the shots. it was enough that one of my friends only got the first shot and another never went in for the final shot. i don't know if it has to do with age that we felt ill, but i'd rather feel sick for a day or two than end up with warts or cancer so i'll be sure to go in for my third shot in december. :)
i believe the only reason the FDA chose to test people up to 26 was to save health insurance companies money by leaving them with the choice to deny coverage to those of us who are 'too old.'

It's something that actually worries me often. The idea that it could have spread and killed me before i am even old enough to be tested is bs.
Hmm wondering why the shot here is only under 18s, surely you would bring the test age down or jab age up so there isn't this 8 year limbo i am stuck in. Get that shot in! Most jabs have a side effect of a few days but as you said, it's nothing compared to the suffering it can cause.

I cannot believe even if you go privately the doctors won't do it. Is the rate of cervical cancer death higher there? Maybe we do it too young and it's not necessary. There must be information they based their decision on, right? You wouldn't think they would put the entire country in danger like that. I don't understand that at all.

The reasoning-
http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/07July/Pages/Cervicalscreening.aspx
I pay towards nhs every month out of my wages, i think if i go in and ask for this test, i should get it.
I am so angry I could scream. :2angry:
Why the fuck do I pay $150.00 for insurance every month? It's basically worthless. I went to my PCP earlier in the year to get on anti depressants. He gave me a 2 week trial of effexor and I felt like it worked really well. When I tried to fill the prescription, I was told that my insurance wouldn't cover it. My doctor fought with them saying that he had tried me on other things in the past and they hadn't worked. (he had, although it had been a few years prior). They still wouldn't approve the prescription and then on top of that, I got a bill from the dr's office because my insurance wouldn't cover the 2 visits I made to the office because they said it was for a prior condition (since my dr had told them he'd tried me on other medicines in the past and I switched insurances last year). So there went $200 down the drain to my PCP with no results.
A few months ago my gyno thought I might have PCOS. She sent me for some blood work and then sent me for a transvaginal ultrasound. After I had the bloodwork done, I got a bill in the mail for $175. When I called my insurance company, they told me blood work wouldn't be covered until I met my $750 deductible. So there went another $175.
Yesterday, I got a bill from the place where I had my ultrasound. $500.I haven't called about it yet (quite frankly I don't feel like dealing with it today) but I'm sure they're going to tell me fuck you, it's your fucking problem. My gyno wants me to have another ultrasound before I have my cyst removed. Fuck that. I don't have another $500. I don't have the first $500 for fucks sake.
Ugh I'm just so frustrated. So far I've paid $1,500.00 in insurance premiums this year and it seems like I've gotten nothing out of it. FML.
tl;dr
