I loved the Norplant while I had it. It was easy and I never had to think about birth control. I kept it for the full 5 years. Now, the insertion was a piece of cake to me, but the removal was terrible! The tubes had adhesions (scar tissue) attached to them. All of that tissue had to be snip snipped little by little until all of the tubes were free. The entire upper arm was black and blue for weeks!
Aaaaaannnnnndddddd...to top it off. A year later I had to have laser hair removal because I started to grow coarse hair on my chin. I was 24. :| It was directly related to the hormones in the Norplant. Not sure what hormones are in the new version though. I dont think any doctors in this area offer it.

implanon is progesterone only. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etonogestrel this one is also in the nuva ring, but the ring includes estrogen.

norplant also was, just a different syntheic hormone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levonorgestrel

I had my implanon implant taken out a few weeks ago. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a little rod that is inserted under the skin in your upper arm and it lasts for three years. I really wouldn't recommend it! It causes scarring when they put it in and take it out and it's kinda traumatic when they pump your arm full of local anesthetic and you can watch them cut it open with a scalpel. It really fucks around with your menstrual cycle. I had the lightest periods I have ever had for the first two years and that was great but during the last six months they were really heavy and erratic. I am going to try the ring next!

bringing and old quote. i have implanon, you've traumatized me & im scared shitless to get it out now :2huh:

I'm already having the worst side effects ever but I think I'd rather suffer through it than get it taken out. This shit blows. :-(
Constant bleeding/moderate-severe cramps ever since I got it. It is the absolute most effective thing out there, and those side effects apparently only happen to 4% of people :x , so I wouldn't let that sway your opinion. It's just really annoying for me to go from no period to a freaking permanent one.

Did your insurance cover paying for it? I know that when I started looking for more info on them, they were pretty expensive.
Yeah, due to a glitch in my school system I do not currently have health insurance and therefore it was free for me at PP- any option was free so I obviously went with the most effective one. :-D It runs $900-$1200 usually, at least in CA (I know it's different state to state but probably very similar), which does sound high but when you think about $30 for a pill pack every month for three years, it's pretty cost-effective.

Wait, wait, wait if you don't have insurance it's free at PP? Whoa, thats where I went and they gave me a sheet of paper with prices of birth control. The pill was like 20 for a month and that iud thing said either 500 or 600. I've always had insurance but since I lost my job, I also lost my insurance and I'm clearly in the dark about how PP works.

ETA: nevermind, this is what the PP website says

"Remember, Planned Parenthood strives to make health care accessible and affordable. If you do not have insurance, staff at your local Planned Parenthood health center can talk with you about your payment options. In some states, you may qualify for a state-funded program or a lower fee scale."

So I guess I'll have to call and see what options for me they have.
Yeah, what I have is state-funded. They gave me a card and everything. Like two months ago I had insurance so I would have had to pay the whole thing out-of-pocket (because my insurance didn't cover reproductive health), but now that I don't, it was completely free. And it wouldn't have been at another PP ten minutes away. Makes no sense at all, but yeah, I suggest you call and set up an appointment at several PPs in your area to talk to someone about it (I doubt they can do it over the phone). Good luck!

I can't really set up appointments at other ones, which sucks for me. They have one in Birmingham luckily but the next closest one to me is like 150 miles away. So hopefully these ladies will be giving me some free birth control. Thanks! Cross your fingers for me definately.

ETA But if they CAN do it over the phone, I'll totally drive 150 miles for a free IUD. haha
Shit. There's literally ten here within a 20-mile radius. Make sure to set up an actual appointment to discuss your options with them, though. They can't tell you much over the phone. Even if they won't cover all of it, it's more than likely they'll give you a huge discount.

Back when I worked at PP, everything was free if you couldn't afford it. You know, back when it was a priority to ensure women didn't have children they couldn't afford. Thanks, Republicans! /rant

this is why i want it. i was on depo for forever and i loved it, until it all went horribly wrong that is. :| but three years back on progesterone only wouldn't be so bad.

i'd love to do something hormone free, but i'm even more scared of what a copper iud may do to my already diseased and tortured uterus. :|

it's been nearly two weeks since i took my last pill and i have two massively painful zits on my face. stupid hormones.

Don't want to pay for BC? Then stop having sex. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and forcing your man to finish inside of you.

Switch to anal, or stick to oral.
