THIS MIGHT BE TMI!
well he called me today and told me I had a yeast infection, lovely.
I couldn't even tell...usually I know when I have one, it's so obvious.
I also had a lot of discharge so I was pretty worried and wondered if I had an STD or something, but I don't.
I guess my cooter is just sensitive.
he didn't really tell me much as to what caused it, but next time I get a pap done I will need to go to the gyno and have them check it out more thorough I guess.

Glad to hear it wasn't anything extreme!! And I don't think it's abnormal that you have a lot of "womanly problems." There are some women who just do, and some women who (lucky them!!) just don't. I used to get yeast infections kinda frequently, and that was even before I began having sex (and when I did begin having sex, I found out that a certain type of Trojan condoms gave me yeast infections, too!), so I guess I'm just sensitive down there, too. Anyway, I went to a gyno quite a few years ago when I had a pretty painful infection (I usually just self treated, but I could barely walk with this one). She gave me a prescription for Diflucan, and ever since I took that tiny little pill, I have never had a yeast infection again. Have you tried anything like Diflucan to see if it'll beat the bad yeast outta there? LOL.

Same here. Every single pap, since I've started going to the gyno. I read an article a few months ago, and forgive me, don't have the link, but it suggested that certain birth control pills make the cells look "abnormal," and even though they don't look like cancer cells, they are shaped a bit differently than normal and known cancer cells, so even though they don't look like cancer, or progressing into cancer, they are red flagged. I am going to search for it now, from what I remember it looked legitimate. That would be the only explanation for why I can't have a normal pap, I tested negative for HPV and all other STDS, have very little cancer in my family, etc.

Here it is! It's actually not the exact article I was referring to, but here it is...

Basically, I think this happened to me..(the stuff I bolded) my first gyno basically told me that I had HPV, but never did a test for it, and instead referred me to an oncologist. I still see the oncologist gyny just because I LOVE him and he is super thorough. He did the actual HPV test, and told me I DIDN'T have it after all.

Birth Control Use Linked to Abnormal Pap Test Result Posted 2/2/2004
| Watch Watch (.wmv format)

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Women on birth control pills who get abnormal Pap test results may want to double check the findings if their doctor uses one of the new, liquid-based testing systems.

Pathologists in the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute – Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University recently tested 84 Pap smears that had been obtained using the ThinPrep testing method. All of the specimens came from women using birth control pills and all were found to contain signs of dysplasia, a condition that indicates the presence of human papilloma virus infection (HPV), a precursor to cervical cancer.

When pathologists went a step further, however, and performed specific tests to confirm the presence of the sexually transmitted virus, only a third of the samples were found to be infected.

“In essence, we found out that we had been telling two-thirds of the women we were testing with this method that they had a venereal disease, when, in fact, they did not,” says Dr. Gerard Nuovo, an expert in HPV infection, who led the study.

Nuovo says liquid-based Pap tests are superior to traditional Pap smear methods because they filter out blood, inflammation and mucous that can complicate diagnosis. But he says the ThinPrep method, which is widely used, uses a high-pressure filtering system to eliminate unwanted material that alters the appearance of the squamous cells that line the cervix to look like they are HPV-infected when, in reality, they are not.

Normal squamous cells may contain glycogen, which can easily be seen in conventional Pap smears or in tests done with systems that use gravity, and not high pressure, to remove unwanted cells. With the ThinPrep, the glycogen can be distorted and may produce a halo-like effect that is often cloudy. In HPV-infected cells, the halo is clear.

Nuovo says hormonal therapy, pregnancy, or even different phases of the menstrual cycle heighten the effect, so women who fall into these categories may want to be especially careful in evaluating their Pap test findings.

Nuovo and his colleagues have now switched to a gravity-based Pap testing system that eliminates the unwanted material through a centrifuge, a process that does not appear to alter the cells in any way.

“The bottom line is that women need to ask what kind of test their gynecologist is using when they go in for a Pap test,” says Nuovo. “If it is a ThinPrep, and they are told they have low-grade dyplasia – which indicates HPV infection – they should simply ask to have HPV-specific testing done, or request that the test be repeated using a different method.”

HPV testing costs anywhere from about $50 to $150 and is often covered by insurance. Currently, if a woman is diagnosed with an abnormal Pap smear, she usually has to have a colposcopy, a visual examination of the cervix, and possibly, additional testing.

“Clearly, fewer false positives would eliminate inconvenience for the patient and costly and time-consuming follow-up procedures,” says Nuovo.

Pap tests are credited with reducing the incidence and deaths from cervical cancer by 50 percent over the past 35 years. Still, roughly 15,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year, and one-third of them will die of their disease.

Nuovo had help on the study from colleagues Carl Morrison, Patricia Prokorym, Clara Piquero and Paul Wakely. The study was published in the journal Cancer Cytopathology and supported by a grant from the Lewis Foundation.

The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University, is the only freestanding cancer hospital in the Midwest. It is a national and international leader in translational research and clinical care, and one of the charter members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked The James as one of the nation’s best cancer hospitals.

I get UTIs all the time. It's very frustrating! I do everything I'm supposed to do to keep from getting them, but I guess I'm just sensitive.

So recently, I felt like I was getting another one. I didn't want to get antibiotics (I was literally on antibiotics from Nov.-Apr. for an intestinal infection and I seriously hope I never have to take them again). So I "googled" home remedies for UTIs, and found out that if you drink half a teaspoon of baking soda in 8 oz. of water, it helps regulate the Ph balance downstairs. I tried it and it totally worked! The infection went away.

Of course, I would go to the doctor if it were a more serious infection, though.

you're always supposed to pee after sex. that's what my gyno told me when i kept getting them (UTI's)... the only time i ever get one now is if i have a sex filled weekend and i can't pee after every session.

and they also have an amazing otc UTI medicine. it's called Azo. it makes your pee turn bright orange but if you catch it early and drink lots of water and cran juice, you won't have to go to the doctor.

Pee before and after. Spermicide also makes you susceptible to UTIs.

I've never known anyone who used spermicides, but a lot of condoms come pre-lubricated with a "spermicidal lubricant." I have no clue about diaphragms.. my knowledge ends at the Seinfeld episode where Elaine tells the virgin girlfriend of Jerry's that her diaphragm went flying out of her purse somewhere. Good times.

[/quote]I suspect spermicides are more used by [s]older[/s] mature women, as they are among the contraceptives of last resort that one can use to improve the effectiveness of a condom. This becomes important if you can't take the pill because you have high blood pressure, are over 35 and smoke etc.
