My how that place has changed since I lived there I had my own tiny house for $700/month on avenue 50. Even had a tiny garage at the bottom of the hill. Fuck of a climb up ten thousand stairs to get to my place though. I would have lived there forever if they hadn't sold, remodeled and kicked me out because of my dog. I think they upped the price to around 1200 after the remodel.
Yeah, it's all hipsters and gentrificated up the Ying Yang. I give The Cave credit because they've been there for over a decade and now the neighborhood is catching up to them. York is all together completely changed. You wouldn't recognize it around the Sparklettes plant now. It's Vegantastic.
Probably my house, that's where everybody with no money seems to show up.

No Ron you can't stay with me, and Boston I'm not allergic to dogs I've got 2.

When the housing collapse happened here, I remember tons of people were buying up property and raising the rents. One of our local officials came out and warned that legal steps would be taken if anybody gouged without a legitimate reason for upping the price on housing. Almost like what they do with gas prices when a hurricane hits.
They don't do stuff like that there?
Seems like that should have happened. The only way I can ever see a raise in rents is if a landlord completely remodels a place or property taxes go up.
Of course, I live in bumfucked Ohio too. You can get a decent 2 bedroom bottom floor apt for 500mth. That's expensive around here because your even lucky to find a job that pays a few quarters over minimum wage.
That's exactly what happened and the second step of that is exactly was didn't happen. Trust me, rarely do landlords upgrade their properties, especially in the lower income areas. As a matter of fact, LA passed something that required tenants to share the cost of retrofitting old properties to bring them up to earthquake code. They expect US TO PAY to upgrade properties we don't even own. That's how protected we are here.
Criminal.

I very recently realized that I went to high school and Jr. College with Brandon Wittenauer. He went by Chase when I knew him, most of the articles list him under his stage name Nex Iuguolo. We ran in the same circles but were more acquaintances than friends. Fucking hell. ( I may have had a fat crush on him in school) so sad.
Authorities arrest 2 in deadly Ghost Ship fire that killed 36
http://www.kcra.com/article/authorit...led-36/9977473Two proprietors of the Ghost Ship warehouse in Oakland where 36 people died in a fire in December were arrested Monday morning and face criminal charges related to the deadly blaze, a source familiar with the investigation told The Chronicle.
Master tenant Derick Almena and the art space’s creative director Max Harris were arrested in counties outside the Bay Area on suspicion of 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter, the source said.
Almena was arrested in Lake County and Harris, who uses the name Max Ohr, was arrested in the Los Angeles area. Attorneys for Almena and Harris were not immediately available on Monday morning.
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley announced that her office will file criminal charges Monday related to the deadly blaze, but she would not elaborate on the details of the charges or who would be charged.
O’Malley will announce the charges at 1 p.m. at the Alameda County Courthouse.
The fire on Dec. 2 erupted during an unpermitted electronic music event inside the ramshackle art space.
In the two years before the fire, police were repeatedly called to parties at the warehouse that was a bohemian collective and living space for around 20 people in the city’s Fruitvale neighborhood.
Teresa Deloach Reed, the now-retired fire chief, had said her department was unaware what was going on at the Ghost Ship, despite the calls to police, complaints from neighbors and a fire station just blocks away.
Deloach Reed retired on May 5 amid criticism over her management of the department and inspection procedures.
This is some bullshit
The only people facing consequences for this are basically kids just like the victims. There's been a massive crackdown on DIY spaces in LA, and there are no alternative venues for local artists and musicians. It's super fucked. A really great venue that was 100% safe got completely shut down earlier this year and then everyone was so scared that they stopped booking shows. It's crippling the live music scene.Teresa Deloach Reed, the now-retired fire chief, had said her department was unaware what was going on at the Ghost Ship, despite the calls to police, complaints from neighbors and a fire station just blocks away.
