MARTINSBURG- Authorities charged an Inwood man on New Year’s Eve for allegedly overdosing on heroin and crashing his car into the rear of the Buyer’s Guide building.
Robert Randolph Athey III, 33, of Spindle Lane, was charged in Berkeley County Magistrate Court with DUI, first offense, for which he could receive between one day and six months in jail and up to $500 in fines.
Police say on Dec. 21, 2015, officers responded to 415 Wilson Street, Martinsburg-the Buyer’s Guide address-for reports of a man passed out at the wheel who had backed his car into the building. When officer’s with the Martinsburg Police Department arrived, they found Athey unconscious, with his foot on the pedal and the engine revving, according to warrant.
Athey’s lips were blue, his pulse was slight and he wasn’t breathing on his own, according to court records. After medics gave him a shot of Narcan, he was rushed to Berkeley Medical Center for further attention, records note. Besides a drain spout and a bit of stucco, the building was largely undamaged, the warrant claims.
Athey allegedly told police he did not remember the accident, however he did take heroin prior to the incident, police say.
