Emma Fillipoff - missing since 28 Nov 2012

I am surprised we don't have a thread on this. Here is the rundown -

Emma was living in Victoria, BC, Canada. She had been becoming increasingly erratic - her mother suspects she had a mental break and was anorexic. CCTV footage shows her acting paranoid - entering/leaving the same building 14 times in 4 minutes (or something along those lines). On her last day, she was spotted by a friend who saw her at a crosswalk, afraid to cross. He called the police and said she was in distress. They came, found her shoeless and spoke with her for 45 mins but let her go. She was reported missing later that night. She had phoned her mother a bunch of times that week and had asked her to fly out to help her, but would ring back and change her mind. Her mother eventually decided to fly out anyway, and arrived hours after Emma went missing.

A really good documentary about Emma

    Fun facts!

Emma had been seeing a guy called Julien. She met him back when she lived in Ontario and according to him, they saw each other for awhile and she broke it off because she was moving 'out west' . Coincidentally, he too then moved out West and coincidentally ran into her a bunch of times, including the day she went missing. He also sent her father a FB message, apologising for stalking Emma. Julien's first language is not English and that is his excuse for using the word stalking.

A guy in Vancouver went into a clothing store in 2014 and tore down a missing person reward poster about Emma, and said she was his girlfriend and that she didn't want to be found because hated her parents.

TWIST - In March 2016, Emma's mother, who has been the main force behind finding Emma, was charged with money laundering, drug and weapons offences.

My interest in this case has been renewed as I have been listening to the Night Time Podcast's coverage of Emma - he has done three really good episodes so far, with the most recent one being an interview with creepy Julien. Highly recommend listening if you're into true crime, missing persons etc. Emma's mother Shelley was also interviewed on the podcast about her drug charges and she has said that her son Matthew was using her house as a drug den and that's why they have charged her - she was apparently unaware of it and will fight the charges

    Thanks Liv.

The coincidences with the boyfriend are just too odd.

She actually has a wiki page:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disapp...Emma_Fillipoff

Didn't get to watch the video on her yet, but found an article from 2014 that had some interesting facts that I guess don't seem to jive for me:

Fillipoff was a trained chef, held several jobs, was not into drugs or alcohol, and is described as a loving, emotionally sensitive woman who was planning to go home to her family.
She bought a prepaid cellphone, but never activated it. Even though she had money in her bank account, she was staying — as she did several times in the past year — at a women’s shelter.

Those who knew Fillipoff said she occasionally seemed confused in those final days, according to her mother, who spent two months searching Vancouver Island for her daughter before returning home Feb. 5.
Just seems very odd to me that from those descriptions, she was high functioning, had money and a decent job. Why would she be staying in women shelters several times over the past year before disappearing? I understand people can have sudden psychotic breaks, but everything I've read states that she had no history of mental health or drug abuse issues, so there wasn't any kind of red flag from that behavior?

Sounds like everybody just thought she was a "free spirit" when it really sounds like she had an undiagnosed mental illness. Mom also thinks she was anorexic. I don't know a lot about anorexic but doing a quick google search tells me that it usually comes/co-exists with other mental issues such as
Anorexia nervosa often co-exists with major depression, anxiety disorders, or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).These are called co-occurring disorders, and they are difficult for many treatment providers to diagnose accurately and treat effectively in conjunction with an eating disorder. Patients whose anorexia nervosa treatment fails to address co-occurring disorders will face a vastly more difficult treatment path and more complex challenges in recovery.

As far as having money but still staying in women shelters- maybe she was just a money hoarder?
Some people are just cheap. Personally, I think it's a little tacky. You're taking what could be an available bed from somebody who may actually need it.
