Phoenix police: 7 dead in 8 attacks by "serial street shooter"

PHOENIX -- A seventh homicide and three other shootings are related to the same serial shooter or shooters believed responsible for six other fatal shootings in recent months, Phoenix police said Tuesday as they called on residents to be vigilant and appealed for tips.

"Someone out there knows who did this," said Police Chief Joe Yahner.

The killing of 55-year-old Krystal Annette White is the additional homicide now listed by police as believed to be linked. White was found dead early on April 19 along a street east of downtown after neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

That location is miles from the Maryvale area of west Phoenix where the other homicides occurred between April 1 and June 12. Those victims included two women and a 12-year-old girl shot at one location in the most recent incident.

Police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the victims all were outside or in a vehicle when shot in or near residential neighborhoods during hours of darkness but have little in common in terms of age, race or gender and there's no known motive. Police have publicly referred to the unidentified gunman as a "serial street shooter," reports the Arizona Republic.

The revised list added three non-fatal shootings in addition to the killing of White that police believe are linked, for a total of eight incidents that included seven fatalities.

The additional four incidents were added after investigators reviewed all possibly related incidents since Jan. 1, a police statement said. "All of these incidents were already under investigation but have now been included in the series of violent crimes previously linked and reported," police said.

Two of the newly listed shootings involved people wounded late at night on back-to-back nights in March. One of those two shootings occurred east of downtown and two miles from where White was found.

The fourth newly listed shooting involved an unoccupied vehicle on the west side.

The wider geographic spread means all residents should heighten their awareness and be sure to report suspicious activity, Howard said. "I'm not asking people to be fearful. I'm asking for them to raise their level of awareness to a healthy level."

Evidence includes a suspect description provided by a wounded victim and physical evidence left at scenes, Howard said.

He declined to elaborate on the physical evidence but he said the description is of a thin or lanky young man, possibly in his early 20s. A police sketch showed a male with dark hair, and Howard said witnesses reported seeing a car leaving shooting scenes, possibly with more than one person inside.

The 2016 shootings follow an unsolved 2015 series of Phoenix-area freeway shootings which resulted in a 13-year-old girl being cut by glass. Howard told CBS affiliate KPHO there is no evidence to link the shootings this year to the freeway shootings last year.

In 2005 and 2006, two men randomly targeted people in the Phoenix area, killing five and wounding 16. During the same period, another man killed nine people.

The Silent Witness Program has offered a $30,000 for information in the current case.

The addition of White brings the death toll up to seven, days after the sixth victim, 33-year-old Stefanie Ellis, died of injuries stemming from a June 12 shooting.

Police also believe that the gunmant is responsible for three additional shootings that, until Tuesday, were not publicly linked to the gunman:

On March 17, at about 11:30 p.m., a 16-year-old boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while walking down the street in the 1100 block of East Moreland Street.
On March 18, at about 11:30 p.m., a 21-year-old man received non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while standing outside of his vehicle in the 4300 block of North 73rd Avenue.
On June 12, at about 2:35 a.m., an unoccupied vehicle was discovered shot in the 6200 block of West Mariposa Drive. The shooting was within 6 miles and less than an hour from when Ellis, her daughter Maleah, and friend Angela Linner were gunned down in a car in Ellis? driveway.
Prior to Tuesday?s announcements, all of those believed to have been killed by the shooter were targeted within the area between 55th and 67th avenues and Campbell Avenue and McDowell Road in the Maryvale area of west Phoenix. Five of the people were shot within a 10-day period, from June 3-12.

In addition to Stefanie Ellis, the victims include:

Diego Verdugo-Sanchez, 21, who was shot and killed at about 9 p.m. April 1 outside a home in the 5500 block of West Turney Avenue.
Horacio De Jesus Pena, 32, who was shot and killed at about 9:50 p.m. June 3 while standing outside a home in the 6700 block of West Flower Street.
Manuel Castro Garcia, 19, who was fatally shot at about 9:30 p.m. June 10 in the 6500 block of West Coronado Road.
Angela Linner, 31, who was shot and killed at about 3 a.m. June 12 outside a home in the 6300 block of West Berkeley Road.
Maleah Ellis, 12, the daughter of Stefanie Ellis, who also was shot and killed at about 3 a.m. June 12 outside the same home.

PHOENIX -- Authorities investigating the first serial killer in Phoenix in a decade said Wednesday that they have linked a non-fatal shooting to the case, bringing the number of attacks under examination to nine.

The latest attack occurred in a central Phoenix neighborhood on July 11 when someone fired on a vehicle occupied by a 21-year-old man and a 4-year-old boy. Neither was injured, said police spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard, who declined to reveal other details of the shooting.

In all, seven people have been fatally shot and two others wounded in attacks that began March 17. Most of the attacks occurred in the blue-collar Maryvale neighborhood, though two shootings -- including the latest -- occurred in central Phoenix.

Police say the victims were attacked as they stood outside their homes or sat in vehicles after dark. They were fired upon by someone who was sitting in a car or had just stepped out of a vehicle.

"It's occurring within a residential area in front of a home," Howard said to CBS affiliate KPHO. "A vehicle, related in the sense that people are either near or in a vehicle, as well as in or next to the street."

    No motive has been established.

Investigators declined to reveal the evidence that they say ties the cases together.

They believe the crimes were carried out by a lanky man in his early 20s, but they are leaving open the possibility that someone else may have participated in the attacks. The suspect is believed to have used several vehicles, including a black 5 Series BMW sedan.

Police have few other leads about the suspect and are appealing to the public for tips. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.

"Our best hope for the identity for this man will come from the community," Howard said.

"It doesn't make me comfortable," said Michelle Drips to KPHO. He lives in the area where the latest incident took place. "It doesn't matter where you go, anything can happen to you. Me, personally, I carry around a stun gun."

Investigators continue to ask that residents remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, including unfamiliar people or vehicles, in their neighborhoods.

The last Phoenix serial killing case was in 2005-2006 when six people were killed and 19 wounded in a series of seemingly random shootings. Two men were convicted.

    another shooting

    PHOENIX
A man has been killed in a Phoenix neighborhood that’s been hit by a string of fatal shootings that authorities say appear to be the work of serial killer, reports CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV.

Police told the station a man was shot at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, then walked to a house in the Maryvale neighborhood, and collapsed and died outside.

Maryvale is one of two predominantly Latino neighborhoods in which a total of seven people have beenkilled and two others wounded in shootings from mid-March until mid-July.

Police haven’t tied this killing to the investigation of the other shootings in Maryvale.

According to KPHO, police say they don’t know where the man was shot or the identity of the attacker. A police officer told the station investigators found shell casings.

Police haven’t released the name of the victim.

The latest gunfire came as a recently released police report said detectives investigating the apparent serial killings found 10 shell casings outside a home where one of the seven victims suffered at least five gunshots.

Horacio de Jesus Pena, 32, had just returned home the night of June 3 from his job at an assisted living facility and had his keys in hand when the attacker known as the “Serial Street Shooter” opened fire, said the report released Monday after journalists requested that reports on the killings be made public.

Police found no witnesses who saw the shooting, but one reported seeing a white sedan with shiny wheels or wheel rims parked near Pena’s house before the shooting.

After hearing the shots, the woman told relatives to retreat to the back of her house. When she looked out the front window again, the white car was gone, according to the police report.

Police described the suspect as a lanky Hispanic man in his 20s. Six of the seven killings occurred in the poor neighborhood of Maryvale. The killer always gets out of a car and shoots people at close range from the street or fires from within his car.

His victims include a 21-year-old man whose girlfriend was pregnant with their son and a 12-year-girl who was shot to death along with her mother and a friend of the woman.

Authorities do not believe the attacks are racially motivated but have not identified a motive and have said it’s possible the killer has an accomplice.

Police have repeatedly declined to say they linked the various cases. The cars used by the killer include a late-1990s brown Nissan with a spoiler, a late-1990s black BMW, and a white Cadillac or Lincoln.

Detectives scouring the Pena crime scene discovered the 10 shell casings and also found three projectiles. He was hit by bullets and bullet fragments at least five times - in the shoulder, abdomen, back, head and right eye.

Pena’s sister told detectives she was mystified as to why her brother might have been targeted, because she said he did not owe anyone money, did not do drugs and was not involved with gangs.

In another serial killer report released Monday, a witness told authorities he saw muzzle flashes for seven or eight gunshots when the killer shot Manuel Castro Garcia dead on June 10 in Maryvale.

Garcia died as he sat in his sports utility vehicle outside his girlfriend’s house, waiting for her so they could go out to dinner.

It was unclear what else the witness sitting on front porch nearby may have seen because the police report was heavily redacted.

Another witness told police of seeing someone fire shots at Garcia’s SUV, but the description given of the suspect was also redacted.

Garcia was shot as his girlfriend was turning off the lights and locking it to go outside and meet up with her boyfriend. He died a short time later at a hospital.

The last Phoenix serial killing case was in 2005-2006 when six people were killed and 19 wounded in a series of seemingly random shootings. Two men were convicted.

    PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -
For the first time, Phoenix police are commenting publicly about a man they looked at as a potential suspect in the serial shooting case. This comes just ahead of the one-year anniversary of the start of the spree.

"There were several tips that came in on Frank Taylor," Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.

If that name sounds familiar, it might be because Frank Taylor was involved in an attempted armed robbery last August that made headlines. Glendale police say he pointed a gun at a woman and her two friends outside of a Circle K and demanded her gun, which was holstered. The woman, fearing for her life, shot Taylor.

"He was killed in an armed robbery attempt a couple of weeks after our last incident, so there were people pointing us to Frank Taylor," said Sgt. Howard.

Taylor was 27. He did have a criminal past. He also had access to a gun and listed several addresses in the Maryvale area where five of the seven serial shooting victims were killed.

Tipsters also pointed out his resemblance to the sketch and the fact that after Taylor's death, the shootings stopped.

"Our detectives did research that. They did investigate, but they were unable to gather enough evidence to link him to this crime," Sgt. Howard said.

As that tip and many others fizzled, investigators continue to work on the case and the anniversary is something they're keenly aware of for a few reasons.

"There's going to be a lot of families mourning the loss of a loved one again here in the next few months," said Sgt. Howard.

March 17 marks the one year since the first incident in what would become the serial shooter case.

During a four-month period, seven people were killed, four others injured in nine shootings, as the gunman opened fire seemingly at random.

I might have posted the story above in the wrong thread, but I am confused. I think they are two separate cases, and I posted in the wrong one.

I missed your post until now. If Merritt, guy in your article is innocent, then surely the 2015 Phoenix freeway shootings & the 2016 Phoenix shootings have to be the same guy & Merritt was wrongfully arrested for Saucedo's crimes? So the threads are linked, even though they're about seperate series of shootings?

Juan Martinez Gets More Time to Mull Death Penalty for Serial Street Shooter Suspect

(June 16, 2017) Deputy County Attorney Juan Martinez has been granted more time to decide whether to seek the death penalty for suspect Aaron Juan Saucedo for the first murder that police say kicked off the Serial Street Shooter slayings, according to court filings reviewed this week.

More than a month has passed since the Phoenix Police Department named Saucedo, 23, as the man responsible for a dozen shootings and nine deaths in 2015 and 2016.

So far, Saucedo has only been charged with the murder of his mother's boyfriend, Raul Romero. County prosecutors are biding their time before seeking charges in the other eight deaths.

If convicted of all nine murders, Saucedo would share the distinction with Baseline Killer Mark Goudeau as the deadliest serial killer in Arizona history.

Typically, the team of prosecutors reviewing a case gives itself 30 days to file charges, Martinez?s boss, County Attorney Bill Montgomery told reporters the day after Saucedo was named. That arbitrary and informal deadline came and went last week, to much media musing.

The reporting pack paid less attention to Martinez?s motion on May 30, when he asked a judge to give him 60 more days to declare if he would seek the death penalty. The judge granted the request.

Martinez has a courtroom reputation for being brash, sarcastic, and aggressive. Some defense attorneys would add sneaky to that list, but Martinez is unapologetic. He?s trying to win and take a brutal killer off the streets, he often says.

He earned an international reputation and legions of critics and admirers for putting boyfriend-killer Jodi Arias away for life in a sensational 2013 trial.

In the Saucedo case, his legal filing did not explain his thinking.

What comes closer to explaining the case against Saucedo is another recent court record outlining the possible witnesses.

In the motion filed June 5, prosecutors say they could call any of three dozen Phoenix cops, detectives, and crime-scene specialists.

In addition, prosecutors listed employees of two pawnshops on Indian School Road in Phoenix. One was Mo Money Pawn, where police said they traced a 9 mm Hi-Point pistol used in Romero?s shooting.

But authorities revealed for the first time publicly that Windy City Pawn Shop, just over a mile to the west, also played some role in the case.

Nothing hints at the possible significance of the second pawn shop. In court documents filed to establish that police had sufficient evidence to hold Saucedo for the other 11 shootings, police said their suspect used three guns. They did not say where he bought them.

Also June 5, authorities listed an employee at First Transit. Saucedo worked there as a city bus driver in 2015 and received a traffic ticket after being caught on camera running a red light.

Police said unidentified coworkers recognized Saucedo from the artist?s sketch they released a year ago. He apparently left that job around the time police first questioned him in December. Court records at the time of his April arrest showed he was a laborer since around the new year.

Prosecutors disclosed as possible witnesses a man who lives about three miles east of most of the killings, and another who lives near Interstate 17 and Camelback Road.

Two men living near the crime scene at 920 East Montebello Avenue in central Phoenix also likely will be called as witnesses. Saucedo?s mother, Maria Saucedo-Ramos and two women with her dead boyfriend?s surname were also listed.

In filings earlier this week, Saucedo's lawyers began mounting a defense for the only crime he's been formally charged with, Romero's murder.

Saucedo?s team says that the state lacks evidence, that he didn?t do it, and that he was mistakenly identified. They also say he has good character and lacked motive.

So that lone case against Saucedo churns slowly toward trial. And the case involving the murders of eight other victims? Watch this space, as they say.
