Ann Dadow (37) was riding in a car that plunged over the edge of a cliff in Hawaii

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...aborative_1_na
At the beginning of the decade, Alison and Ann Dadow were well-known yoga entrepreneurs who drove matching Porsches, as identical as they were, around West Palm Beach, Fla. In late May, the 37-year-old twins plunged over the edge of a cliff in Hawaii and fell 200 feet in a Ford Explorer, which crumpled like an old soda can when it hit the slick, jagged rocks peeking out of the Pacific Ocean below.

Ann, sitting in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister Alison was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and on Monday was charged with second-degree murder in Ann?s death. She?s been ordered to remain in jail without bail, according to court documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Sometime before moving to Hawaii, the two assumed new identities under the names Alexandria and Anastasia Duval. It?s unclear when the twins assumed new identities or if they legally changed their names. Court documents refer to them by both names. For the sake of clarity, The Post will refer to the twins by their given names, Alison and Ann Dadow.

On the afternoon of May 29, the two were cruising along Hana Highway, which snakes around the east coast of Maui for about 64 miles, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Despite such gorgeous scenery, an argument had allegedly grown between them, according to court documents.

Lawrence Lau, who was chaperoning a Boy Scouts troop outing, claimed to have come across the white SUV sitting motionless in the middle of the highway. According to court documents, the passenger was pulling the driver?s hair.

?You could tell that she was very violently swearing at somebody else in the car,? Lau told KHNL. ?She was mad and when she took off, it was in a rage. So she floored it and was in a rage as she sped past us.?

Alison allegedly drove straight off the cliff.

Alan Akina, a contributor to ?Wake Up Today,? told KHON he also witnessed the accident.

?They just sped up, drove right past our van and turned off the cliff,? Akina said.

According to the Explorer?s airbag control module, the car experienced a hard acceleration and no braking, even after it crashed into and over the rock wall on the side of the highway and plummeted to the rocks below, court documents state.

Alison was arrested at the Seaside Hotel last Friday, after she attempted to fly out of Hawaii.

?We had information after she was discharged from the hospital she attempted to fly out of the jurisdiction Wednesday night,? Maui Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Emlyn Higa told the Associated Press. The court documents state Alison had a flight booked to the West Coast.

Todd Eddins, Alison?s defense attorney, told The Washington Post she did have a flight planned but it was back to upstate New York to attend a funeral for her sister with her grandmother, ?to be comforted by the only maternal presence she had left,? as the twins? mother died when they were young.

?All we know is she was trying to leave the state,? Higa said. ?We were afraid she would try to leave the country as well.?

Eddins called the second-degree murder charge ?extreme and cold-hearted.?

?They were extremely close, even by identical twin standards,? he told The Post. Alison ?did not try to harm herself or the person she most loved and was closest to in the world.?

The two were more than just sisters ? they were business partners with a strange and winding past through the United States, stretching from Florida to the Upper Midwest and finally the Aloha State.

Long before moving to Hawaii, the Utica, N.Y.-born twins ? then known to all as Alison and Ann Dadow ? were yoga entrepreneurs, who opened their first location in South Florida during the ?worst economy, when everybody was closing,? as Alison told the Palm Beach Post in 2011. Their approach, which focused on the spiritual as well as the physical, led them to record a yoga DVD and to open a second location of Twin Power Yoga in West Palm Beach on Nov. 11, 2011. Alison said the goal was to gift yoga to the stressed downtown professionals of South Florida.

?Our whole life is focused on sharing this yoga,? Dadow told the Palm Beach Post. ?We hope we get it to the people who need it. That?s our passion.?

Their high-end studios were a hit.

?They taught each class with a passion and a knowledge of a more traditional Indian Ashtanga practice that you don?t always find in power yoga instructors,? Dalia Soles told the Palm Beach Post.

During those years, the twins also became a recurrent topic in GossipExtra, a South Florida tabloid which ridiculed them as the ?terrible twins of yoga.? According to the Star Advertiser, they lived a lavish lifestyle that included matching Porsches and frequent trips to Worth Avenue, an upscale shopping resort with roads lined with palm trees and dotted with stores such as Chanel and Giorgio Armani alongside the Four Seasons and Chesterfield hotels.

?They were very well respected here for a while,? Jose Lambiet, a former New York Daily News reporter and GossipExtra founder, told the Star-Advertiser. ?But when you get successful, it?s easy to start overspending. This is Palm Beach. Once you start shopping on Worth Avenue, it can get out of control pretty quickly.?

All of it ? the yoga, the cars, the shopping ? ended abruptly in 2014.

Following a Groupon special for their yoga studios, the twins closed both shops without warning. Clients puzzled over their worthless, prepaid memberships, while employees went unpaid. The twins were nowhere to be found.

?They just vanished overnight,? Lambiet said.

They reappeared later that year in a city with an extremely different climate: Park City, Utah. Although Twin Park Yoga had closed down unceremoniously in South Florida, the twins opened a location in their new town. Aside from Ann Dadow now appearing as Anna, according to a piece in the Park Record, everything about the studio seemed to be the same as the defunct Florida locations, including their mission to focus on the spiritual.

?We wanted the studio to reflect love and light,? Ann told the Park Record. ?That is the goal of our practice. It is a physical practice with a touch of spirituality.?

On weekends, they offered ?Doga,? which Ann said is ?just a time to come in and connect with your pet.?

But that didn?t last long either ? Ann filed for bankruptcy in December 2014.

After that, the two seemed to just disappear.

It?s unclear when they arrived in Hawaii, though Lambiet?s GossipExtra reported that Ann allegedly appeared at Family Life Center, a Maui homeless shelter, with her baggage in January.

?She had the craziest story about arriving in Hawaii a few days ago and getting robbed of her wallet and getting separated from her twin sister,? shelter worker Kahili Moniz told the site. ?She gave us a false name at first. She claimed she had no ID, no money, no nothing.?

It?s also unclear when or where the two changed their names, but police found Hawaii driver?s licenses for both, which stated their new names: Alexandria and Anastasia Duval.

?They wanted a fresh start,? Eddins told The Post. ?Their given names had become a liability.?

After all, aside from bankruptcy, both twins reportedly have had multiple run-ins with the law. According to the Star Advertiser, Alison was arrested in Utah on suspicion of drunk driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and disorderly conduct and in Florida for allegedly defrauding an innkeeper. Her sister, according to the paper, was arrested for public intoxication and assaulting a police officer.

Alison has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge in her sister?s death, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Twin Charged in N.Y. with Sister’s Murder – 6 Months After Plunging Their Car Off Cliff in Hawaii

A Hawaii woman who was behind the wheel of a truck that plunged off a cliff, killing her identical twin sister, has been arrested in New York state and charged for the second time with murder after being cleared in June.

According to a statement by New York state police, 37-year-old Alexandria Duval was tracked down and taken into custody Friday in Albany, New York, after Hawaiian authorities issued a murder warrant. The Maui News reports the warrant for Duval’s arrest was issued last month when a grand jury in Maui County, Hawaii, indicted her on a second-degree murder charge and set bail at $3 million.

According to the police statement, Duval was found inside an Albany residence but allegedly attempted to flee from police. However, she was arrested and is awaiting extradition back to Hawaii in a New York jail, the statement says.

Duval has not entered a plea, and it was not immediately clear if she has retained an attorney.

She is accused of killing her twin, Anastasia, by driving their SUV 200 feet off a cliff in Hana, Maui, on May 29. Witnesses reported seeing the sisters arguing with each other, with the passenger pulling the driver’s hair, the Associated Press reports. Witnesses also said that they saw the truck “accelerate forward and then take a sharp left over the cliff,” one prosecutor said.

Murder twins relationship booze-fuelled, ‘toxic’: Reports

The blond twins at the centre of a Hawaii murder mystery had a toxic relationship that was made explosive when booze was involved, a former boyfriend told People.

Yoga gurus Alexandria Duval was charged with murdering her sister Anastasia in Hawaii earlier this year.

Police believed the pair were fighting in their car when it was deliberately driven off the road.

Florida chef Keith Weiss dated Anastasia for about a year and saw first-hand the duo’s difficult relationship.

“The first time, Ann was driving, and they just started fighting,” he told People.

“She let go of the wheel and they were going back and forth with each other, oblivious to the obvious danger and the other cars around us. She almost lost control of the car.”

A second incident prompted Weiss to ditch Ann.

“We were driving home and they wanted me to stop so they could get some wine,” he told the magazine.

“But I didn’t want to stop, and Ann, she started kicking my hands ... kicking them off of the steering wheel. Alison (now known as Alexandria) was kicking the windows and they were screaming, ‘I want you to stop!’ I told them, ‘You’re going to end up killing us’.

    “They didn’t care.”

Witnesses who had been driving behind the twins told cops that the pair were engaged in a physical fight; Anastasia (in the front passenger seat) was pulling her sister’s hair in the seconds before the fatal plunge.

The twins achieved minor, local fame in southern Florida and Hawaii with their yoga studio. In Florida, it was clear Alexandria was jealous of her sister, Weiss said.

“It almost seemed like Alison was jealous of Ann, who always got the guy,” he told People. “Alison was just a bystander, basically. Alison was always the one who was tagging along.”

He added: “There was just so much drama. They would really get into it. I remember this one time, the three of us were at the mall, and Ann smacked Alison in the back of the head. Hard. They raged. They went back and forth with each other, pulling hair, pinching each other ... it was as if they had blocked everything out around them.”

In the days before Anastasia was killed in the crash, the twins were reportedly at a crossroads of failed businesses and money woes. And underneath was a crazed darkness.

“They were wolves in sheep’s clothing. They used yoga as a mask. They wanted nothing more than to be rich and famous,” one former employee told The Palm Beach Post. “They were very authoritative and not empowering.”

Alexandria is fighting efforts to extradite her to Hawaii. She is scheduled to reappear in court on Dec. 16.

Woman wants charge of killing twin in cliff crash dismissed

A murder charge against a woman accused of deliberately driving off a cliff in Hawaii and killing her identical twin sister should be dismissed because prosecutors misled the grand jury that indicted her, a defense attorney said.
Birney Bervar, Alexandria Duval's defense attorney, filed a motion last week seeking to dismiss the charge, and a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. A prosecutor says it will be up to a jury to decide on the evidence.

The defense motion says a witness to the crash did not testify before the grand jury, instead a detective took the stand to describe what that person saw. The witness had told police he saw the passenger pulling the driver's hair with both hands and heard yelling.

The detective testified incorrectly that the witness said the passenger was no longer pulling the driver's hair when they went over the edge, the defense said. The witness, who the defense interviewed, said the fighting and hair-pulling continued until he lost sight of the SUV as it drove past him and off the cliff, according to the motion.

Autopsy results showed that "long, loose blond hairs" were found on both of Anastasia Duval's hands, the motion said.

The defense attorney also said an officer provided inaccurate testimony that data from the SUV showed Alexandria Duval didn't brake before the crash.

An accident reconstruction expert hired by the defense said data from the air-bag control module showed she "most probably did not push and hold the throttle to the floor and make a hard left towards the wall as stated in the grand jury testimony," according to the motion. "It is probable that having the drivers' head pulled firmly to the right from the pulling of her hair could have caused some erratic driving."

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Emlyn Higa said in response to the motion that the hair-pulling had no effect on Alexandria Duval's ability to drive the SUV safely and didn't contribute to going over the cliff. The conflict between the experts for the prosecution and defense is what a jury trial is meant to resolve, Higa said.

"This case is clearly a tragic accident," said Bervar, the defense attorney. "My client is devastated by the loss of her sister. It's not intentional murder by any means."

    No effect eh?

I was just asking myself what kind of idiot would even try to argue something like that, but then I found a picture of Emlyn Higa & it all made sense.

Murder trial starts for Palm Beach yoga studio operator charged in twin sister’s death

The murder trial of Alison Dadow began in Hawaii on Monday, almost two years after the former operator of two Palm Beach County yoga studios drove over a cliff in Maui in a crash that killed her identical twin sister and business partner.

Dadow, who recently has gone by the name Alexandria Duval, is not expected to testify in the trial, which is expected to last all week, a defense attorney said to the Associated Press.

A woman accused of deliberately driving off a Hawaii cliff and killing her identical twin sister was acquitted of murder Thursday.

A judge found Alexandria Duval not guilty after a trial that started Monday. Duval opted to have a judge instead of a jury decide the case.

Authorities described the 2016 crash as a hair-pulling fight over the steering wheel. The sisters were seen arguing on the narrow, winding Hana Highway on the island of Maui before their SUV plunged 200 feet over a cliff.

The crash was a tragic accident, Alexandria Duval's defense attorney, Birney Bervar said in his opening statement.

Authorities said Alexandria was behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer when witnesses saw the sisters arguing on the perilously narrow, twisting route along a scenic stretch of coastline. A witness cleaning a family gravesite on the highway shoulder told police that he heard a woman screaming in the vehicle and that the passenger was pulling the driver's hair and the steering wheel.

Anastasia Duval was in the passenger seat and was killed, and her sister Alexandria Duval was arrested. A judge later ordered Alexandria Duval released after finding no probable cause for a murder charge. She traveled to upstate New York and was arrested months later in Albany after a grand jury indicted her.

Witnesses testified seeing the women arguing on the narrow highway. Duval did not testify.

"I'm disappointed," Maui County Prosecuting Attorney J.D. Kim said after the verdict. "The facts clearly show it was at least reckless behavior."

Duval left the courtroom without commenting, The Maui News reported.

"It's been an extremely emotional ordeal for her," Bervar told the newspaper. "You can't imagine losing your twin sister in that kind of catastrophic, tragic accident, then being charged with causing the death of your sister, which she didn't. She's extremely relieved."

Duval is going to take some time to figure out what to do next, Bervar told The Associated Press.

The sisters, born Alison and Ann Dadow in the Utica, New York, area, operated popular yoga studios in Florida before they changed their names. They moved to Hawaii in 2015 from Utah.
