Joanie Laurer (45), AKA Chyna of WWF/WWE fame, found dead in her home.

This is a really sad one. She was brilliant during the attitude era, and a lovely woman.

"FORMER WWE and WWF wrestler Chyna ? real name Joanie Laurer ? has died aged 45.

Her management posted a statement on her Twitter and Facebook account confirming her death.

?It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero,? the message said.

?She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her.?

Pro Wrestling Sheet reported Laurer?s manager found her at her home in Redondo Beach, California, but the exact cause of death is unknown at this stage. It has also been reported the 45-year-old had been taking medication to help with anxiety and sleep deprivation, and according to TMZ Sports, police officers at the scene were investigating the possibility of a drug overdose.

She became a wrestling star and debuted in the WWE in 1997, and later wrestled in the WWF."

Note; I really am feeling for this one. Joanie had a very rough journey. This is my first thread, if it's not correct, or I missed it already up elsewhere please delete or edit!

This is one of the hardest celebrity deaths for me. She was my idol growing up. I've always been a wrestling fan. I had her pictures taped up in my locker. No other female in the wrestling world has done what she's done and held the titles she has. She's been a hot mess but I still loved her and she has always been kind to and interacted well with her fans. May she RIP. I feel like a part of my childhood and inner child has died.

She had just recently reemerged on social media. She was very active on Twitter and engaged with her fans. She seemed like she was finally getting her shit together this year :(

TMZ is reporting it as an overdose.

She, like most of us, had her demons.

RIP Chyna 9th Wonder of the World

I remember watching her on Celebrity Rehab. Isn't she like the 5th person to die now that was on that show? I get that it shouldn't be surprising, considering the show was about addicts and a lot of addicts will end up passing away, but still...

I remember watching her on there too. She was one of the ones that really made you root for her to get better. I hated to see this in the news. Another one I hated to see was when Mike Starr.

    Mick Foley posted a great post for her, it makes me happy that she had spoken to someone in WWE and they let her know she was beloved;

    "GOODBYE JOANIE
My heart is aching. My eyes are swollen from crying, having just talked to Joanie Laurer's manager Anthony Anzaldo on the phone and been told that Chyna, the 9th Wonder of the World was no longer with us; gone at only 45.
I will always be grateful for the friendship I shared with her, but particularly so for the kindness she showed my children, especially Noelle when she was younger. I will never forget those moments where Joanie would take Noelle by the hand at WWE events in the late 90's - off to have her makeup done, her fingernails painted; bonding time between big, strong Joanie, and her tiny sidekick. A father doesn't forget that type of kindness.
I didn't know whether to post a classic photo of Chyna in her WWE prime or of Joanie from the last time I saw her - about 10 months ago at a convention on Long Island. I went with the photo from the convention because of the emotion; because it was taken at the exact moment I saw her for the first time in many years. I was told later that Joanie wasn't sure how I would react to her, and that it meant a great deal to her to be accepted. Like I said, a father doesn't forget. I called home on my way back from the convention ? only about 40 minutes from my house. "I'm bringing a friend over to watch the pay-per-view" I said to my wife.
    "Who's that?", my wife asked.
    "Chyna"
    "Chyna?"
    "Yeah, Chyna!"
And that was pretty much that. A mother, you see, doesn't forget the kindness shown to her child, either.

I am so glad we had that night with Joanie. A night to let her know how much we cared about her, whether it was politically correct or not. A night to let her know we loved her - and always would. RIP my dear friend. I pray that somehow in death, you can find the peace that eluded you so frequently during the latter years of your remarkable life."

That video is sad. I'm wondering what all her pills were. She seemed to be drugged...maybe drunk too? I dunno...that was sad.

Laurer was born in Rochester, New York. Her childhood was erratic from the get-go: Her parents divorced when she was about four, and she eventually grew up with three different stepfathers and one stepmother, moving around frequently. Laurer claims in her autobiography that she was kissed by a teacher in seventh grade, around the same time she began purging after she ate. She ran away from home at 16 and eventually finished her last year of high school in Spain.

Laurer majored in Spanish Literature at the University of Tampa, graduating in 1992. She claimed she was raped by two men at a party during her time in school, which also including a stint in the ROTC. Laurer later served in the Peace Corps in Central America, from 1993-1995.

Returning to the States, she held a number of odd jobs: Cocktail waitress/bartender, rock singer, 900-number chat line worker, beeper saleswoman and belly dancer. Eventually, her passion for weightlifting (which started as a teen) took her to professional wrestling at a gym owned by 1950s wrestling star "Wladek "Killer" Kowalski in Massachusetts. By 1995, she'd had her first match, and by 1996, was involved in something of a bidding war between the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) and World Championship Wrestling after meeting WWF performers Paul "Triple H" Levesque and Shawn Michaels after a show.

Laurer made her WWF debut in 1997 as a "bodyguard," billed as "the Ninth Wonder of the World." She played a "heel" or villain, frequently interfering in matches on Triple H's behalf, usually by uppercutting his opponent in the groin at a crucial moment. While in the WWF, Laurer broke ground for female wrestlers: She was the first woman ever to enter the WWF's yearly Royal Rumble event and the first female Intercontinental Champion.

Laurer posed for Playboy in 2000, which was eventually worked into her storyline within the WWF. Eventually, Laurer told The Sun in 2005, she discovered that Triple H, by now her fianc?, was having an affair with WWF owner Vince McMahon's daughter, Stephanie.

"I found out about it," she said, "confronted Vince and lost my job … I was told face-to-face by Vince McMahon that we would be renegotiating contracts and how grateful he was that I was part of his company and how professional I had been about the whole thing, after Paul and Stephanie had been lying to me. I was then faxed a letter saying I would not be needed for the rest of my contract."
The rest of the article. It goes on about previous suicide attempts she made. Drug use and warning signs.
    http://www.people.com/people/article...001662,00.html

L.A. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter tells PEOPLE that Laurer "died of either natural causes or an accidental overdose ... There was evidently some medication [around her] but I think people are surmising."

Chyna's manager has claimed he planned to put the WWE wrestling legend on the TV show Intervention before she died of a medication overdose.
The 45-year-old star, whose real name was Joan Marie Laurer, had become addicted to prescribed sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, Anthony Anzaldo revealed last week.
She died last Wednesday at home in Redondo Beach, California.
Now Anzaldo has told TMZ he was trying to get her help - by striking a deal with producers of the A&E documentary-style production.
'An interventionalist was already lined up as was a facility that was going to take her for 90 days,' Anzaldo told the site.
He added that the episode would have featured some of her high-profile friends from the WWE, including Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mick Foley.

Though I wasn't a huge fan, I respect that she made a name for herself in an all-male sport. I didn't know people actually spit and threw batteries at her, that's terrible.

    RIP Joanie

From what I understand she was doing good while living in Japan and teaching English but coming back to the states brought the fame back and reemerging on social media prob brought back some bad times for her triggering a relapse. Just imagine your boss' daughter stealing your man at the height of your career then you get let go and the company forgets you exist.

Damn! Steroid use maybe? Weird that she'd even want to show that thing in porn movies.
