Missberi, I've never had a problem with you.  I hardly EVER smite people.

But you were joking after the shooting yesterday, and then went ahead and pointed your joke out once again -- asking why people didn't laugh.  And then today you made a comment about how his parents probably don't speak English...like that was a valid point.

Your comments were ignorant and offensive, and it bothered me.

THAT is why I smited you.  Got it?

I would've done the same thing had it been anyone else.

Now most of you know that I have a thick skin.

And much of what is happening today might be related to people being messed up over the incident at Virginia Tech.

But does anyone else feel the tension among members?  Perhaps I never noticed that so many people have hot tempers on here.
Does anyone feel that they need a hug?

And affirmative action is a very nice term for racial discrimination against better-qualified white people in jobs, employment, promotions and scholarships, and college admittance.

    Re: Hostility?

Hostile? Reminded me of this joke......

A female reporter, interviewing an American Indian chief, asked the significance of the varied number of
    feathers in Indian headdresses.
"Feathers show number of sexual partners," the chief
replied. Indicating a nearby young brave, he
continued, "Him? One woman, one feather. Him?"
pointing to a second, older man, "Three women, three
    feathers."

The reporter looked at the Chief's headdress. "But you
    have so many feathers!"

The Chief proudly slapped his chest. "Me Chief. Sleep
with all women. Big, small, fat, tall."

Horrified, the female reporter said, "You ought to be
    hung!"

The Chief said, "Damn right. Me hung big like buffalo,
    long like snake."

The offended reporter said, "You don't have to be
    hostile!"

    The Chief replied, "Hoss-style, dog-style, wolf-style,
    any style!"

    The reporter cried, "Oh, dear!"

"No deer", said the Chief. "Ass too high, run too fast!"

    Your joke redeems your hostility.
And I'm still considering your request.
If I find it in my heart to STFU, I'll undoubtedly get some work done.

So Peavey..what do you consider hostile? Speaking an opinion? Or the name calling over in the VT thread? I'm curious.
    [/quote]
Never speaking an opinion!! I'm an academic, and I think that its IMPERATIVE to listen to a different perspective.  I get persuaded by strong and lucid arguments all the time.

Name calling -- not so good.
Jumping to conclusions with very little evidence --not much better.

And although I'm not idealistic enough to think that any community can get along all the time, I hypothesized that today might make it more congenial on the boards.  I think that DBD is right though, fear evokes a (often emotional) response from folks.
