A SPA manager has been found frozen to death inside a liquid nitrogen chamber used for cryotherapy treatments at an unlicensed facility.
A co-worker discovered 24-year-old Chelsea Patricia Ake-Salvacion’s body at Rejuvenice Cryotherapy in Las Vegas on October 20.
“When they found her, she was rock solid frozen,” Ake-Salvacion’s uncle, Albert Ake, said.
Las Vegas police said the death did not appear to be suspicious and the case was closed without a criminal investigation.
Mr Ake said his niece texted her boyfriend on the night of her death, saying she was going to take a treatment herself after the store closed. She was also seen on security video locking the salon. The co-worker who found her body noticed Ake-Salvacion’s car in the parking lot and her belongings in the business.
The Clark County coroner said Ake-Salvacion’s cause of death will be determined when the results of toxicology tests are finalised in the coming weeks.
Nevada Occupational Safety and Health investigators determined that Ake-Salvacion shouldn’t have been sitting in the cryotherapy chamber after-hours for personal use, spokeswoman Teri Williams said.
“The facts indicate that the fatality occurred as a result of employee misconduct or non-complaint activity,” Ms Williams said. “The employer cannot be cited ... and further investigation is not warranted.”
Cryotherapy involves placing users inside a chamber with subzero temperatures for a short time to relieve pain. Athletes who have long used ice baths to ease their aches have turned to whole body cryotherapy as a quicker way to recover after exercise or competition.

The treatment also is promoted as aiding weight loss, improving healing and increasing blood circulation, leading some salons to offer cryotherapy facials as an anti-ageing remedy.
