Wake Forest basketball coach charged in deadly Queens attack on tourist (Sandor Szabo, 35)

    https://nypost.com/2018/08/09/wake-f...ck-on-tourist/

A Wake Forest basketball coach was arrested in Queens on Thursday for landing a knockout punch on a drunken Florida tourist ' who later died in the hospital, sources said.

Jamill Jones ' an assistant to Danny Manning at the ACC basketball program ' allegedly slugged Boca Raton resident Sandor Szabo in the head early Sunday morning for drunkenly banging on his car in Long Island City, according to law enforcement sources.

Szabo ' in town for his stepsister's wedding ' had left his brother's LIC hotel and was looking for a cab he ordered, his family claimed. Szabo, 35, banged multiple cars in front of 41-10 29th St. at around 1:15 a.m., sources said.

A local resident heard the ruckus and came out of his home to confront Szabo, who then punched that person in the face, according to the sources.

Jones then approached Szabo and slugged him ' causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

Szabo was taken to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Police released surveillance video on Sunday that showed the assailant walking away from the scene.

Jones surrendered at the 114th Precinct stationhouse in Astoria on Thursday morning along with his lawyer. He was awaiting arraignment at Queens Criminal Court.

The medical examiner hasn't revealed whether Jones' punch led to Szabo's death. Law enforcement sources said the charges against Jones could be upgraded depending on the findings.

The 35-year-old assistant coach was hired by Wake Forest in 2017. He was previously an assistant coach at University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Wake Forest said Thursday night it has 'just been made aware of this matter' and is 'gathering information.'

Colleagues in Szabo's hometown of Boca Raton said earlier this week that they hoped their friend's attacker would be caught.

'I hope they find him and bring him to justice,' co-worker Josh Gillon told WPEC-TV on Tuesday. 'This was really a stupid, stupid act. It's a big family and he was an important part of it so everybody is just heartbroken.'

Ex-Wake Forest basketball coach convicted for ‘one-punch’ slaying in Queens

    https://nypost.com/2020/02/06/ex-wak...ing-in-queens/

A former Wake Forest basketball coach was found guilty of assault on Thursday for fatally punching a Florida tourist in Queens.

Jamill Jones, 37, could face up to a year in prison when sentenced next month for the August 2018 attack that left Sandor Szabo, 35, dead.

He showed no emotion when the jury delivered the guilty verdict at Queens Criminal Court, but friends and family of Szabo tearfully consoled each other when the announcement was made.

“I am so relieved it’s over,” said Donna Kent, Szabo’s mother. “I’m ready to sleep and move on. This has been my life for 18 months.”

Jones, a North Carolina resident, and his lawyer declined to comment to reporters after the verdict was handed down.

The former college hoops coach slugged Szabo in the head for drunkenly banging on his car in Long Island City.

Szabo, who was in town for his stepsister’s wedding, fell and hit his head on the pavement.

He died at the hospital three days later.

Ex-Wake Forest coach avoids jail after ‘one-punch’ death of Florida tourist in NYC

    https://nypost.com/2020/07/23/ex-wak...f-nyc-tourist/

The former Wake Forest basketball coach whose knockout punch led to the death of a Florida tourist in Queens two years ago avoided jail time at his sentencing on Thursday.

Jamill Jones, 37, will serve three years of probation, 1,500 hours of community service and pay a fine of $1,000 in the August 2018 death of Boca Raton resident Sandor Szabo.

Jones had faced up to a year in prison after being found guilty in February of assault in the third degree.

Then an assistant to Danny Manning at the ACC basketball program, Jones had slugged Szabo in the head for drunkenly banging on his car in Long Island City.

Szabo — an online-marketing exec who had earlier in the day attended his stepsister’s wedding — was looking for his ride-share vehicle when he knocked on Jones’ window, his family has said.

The former college hoops coach pursued Szabo and socked him once in the face.

Szabo, 35, fell and hit his head on the pavement, causing a skull fracture and other traumatic brain injuries. He died at the hospital three days later.

“This was a tragic incident that ended the life of a man and devastated his family, a violent run-in that should never have happened,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz in a statement.

“Violence is never the answer to settling a dispute.”

Jones attended the sentencing hearing before Queens Criminal Court Judge Joanne Watters via Skype video link, surrounded by his relatives. He apologized to Szabo’s family.

“We’re very sorry to the Szabo family and happy with the judge’s sentence,” said one of his defense attorneys, Eric Renfroe. “[Jones is] a good person and we’re sure he’s going to continue to do good in his life.”

The victim’s mother, Donna Kent, and other family members also attended the hearing via video.

She ripped prosecutors’ decision to only charge Jones with third-degree assault, and the resulting sentence, as “inadequate and unfair for the crime of killing an individual.”

“Judge Watters had an opportunity to send a powerful message to society — but instead delivered a weak-willed message that repentance alone is enough to prevent justice,” Kent said in a statement.

She said the family is exploring options in the civil courts “to right this wrong.”

“[We] believe it will do what the criminal court was too afraid to do: punish Jamill C. Jones for taking the life of our beloved Sandor.”
