A MOTHER is in police custody after her six-week-old daughter was allegedly found dead with her throat slit at a home in Newcastle.
The woman’s sister-in-law rang emergency services about 9am after finding the baby girl inside the Wallsend home.
“Police are investigating the death of a baby outside Newcastle,” a police spokesman said.
“A woman has been taken to a local police station and is assisting police with their inquiries.”
When ambulance and police arrived at the scene the baby was confirmed dead, the police spokesman said.
It is believed the girl’s father was at the home of the alleged murder in a suburb in Newcastle’s west.
Distraught relatives were being comforted by police and neighbours outside the white fibro cottage in the quiet street.
The baby’s mother is currently at Waratah police station being questioned by police and is expected to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
The street has been closed off as detectives and forensic teams go through the house.
Several children continued to play nearby, oblivious to the alleged crime.
Shocked neighbours said it was the first time anything like this has happened in the normally quiet street.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
