A man who was shot multiple times and killed inside his West Side home was identified Tuesday by San Antonio police as Rodolfo Espinoza, 31.

Investigators believe Espinoza had been fighting with his common-law wife, Maraliz Medina, at some point before the shooting.

Police said they found Espinoza?s body in the bedroom of their home in the 10500 block of Dugas Drive after 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Sgt. Javier Salazar, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, said although it appears there may have been a physical struggle, investigators ruled that the death was murder.

"We knew very early on that this case was going to hinge quite heavily on evidence, forensic evidence found at the scene," Salazar said. "And so as it turns out, that's in large part what led to the charge. Any claims of self-defense, the evidence just doesn't lend itself to that.?

Medina, who turns 28 on Wednesday, was charged and booked into jail Monday night.

Salazar would not discuss the detectives' findings in depth for fear of jeopardizing the investigation.

Tony Juanes, who lives a few houses down from the murder scene, still has questions about what happened. Juanes said the violence seems out of character for the couple, who he often saw strolling together past his home.

"They used to walk through here with the dogs. They seemed to be a nice couple, a young couple, but I don't know what happened," Juanes said.

According to police, Espinoza and Medina had a child living in their home. It was unclear whether both were parents to the boy, who is younger than 10.

Police said the child was home at the time of the shooting.

SAPD records show two prior calls to the couple's address earlier this year. One in January was listed as a disturbance involving a neighbor.

The second call, in June, was for an unspecified police emergency.
