A Calais, Maine, man died on the Fourth of July after he had placed a mortar tube for fireworks on his head and it exploded, the state fire marshal's office said.
Devon Staples, 22, was shooting off fireworks with friends on South Street when he suffered a fatal head injury and died around 10 p.m. Saturday, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
It it the first death attributed to fireworks since they became legal in Maine in 2012.
Staples had been drinking, McCausland said.
Fire investigators said people around the state suffered injuries from private fireworks incidents in Friendship, Jefferson, Lebanon and Woodstock. They included burns and eye injuries, McCausland said.
