Woman killed by flying plywood from NYC construction site.
A woman was killed in a freak accident as she was walking down a Manhattan street Tuesday - when a gust of wind dislodged a piece of plywood at a nearby construction site and it struck her near, authorities said.
The 37-year-old woman was chatting on her cellphone as she made her way down West 12th Street in the West Village, near the former site of St. Vincent's Hospital, when the 4-foot-by-8-foot piece of wood flew up Seventh Avenue at a high rate of speed and slammed into her just before 6 p.m.
The woman was thrown into a wall outside a parking garage, striking her head, cops said.
She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she later died, officials said.
The piece of plywood was ripped from a security fence across the street from where the woman was walking as high winds swept through the area Tuesday evening.
The construction site is the former home of the now-shuttered St. Vincent's Hospital, which is in the process of being converted into a luxury condominium complex called The Greenwich Lane.
