Suicidal mum hangs herself with scarf she won at mental health hospital bingo

A SUICIDAL mum of two hanged herself with a scarf she won in a mental health hospital's bingo session.

Carolyn Hughes' family are demanding to know why the hospital sanctioned the prize - and let her keep it in her room - in light of her medical history.

The 56-year-old had suffered depression for decades and was a regular inpatient at Glasgow's Leverndale Hospital, where her history of suicide attempts was well-known.

Carolyn's most recent admission was after she tried to hang herself at home.

Her daughter Lisa, 36, a nurse, last night demanded to know how her mum could have died in a unit which was supposed to be "suicide-proof".

She said: "There should have been nowhere my mum could have tied a ligature in her room."

Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board (GGCHB) are urgently investigating.

Lisa, her brother David, 24, their dad John Docherty and other family members are calling for a fatal accident inquiry to be held into Carolyn's death.

John said: "She used to go to the bingo in the hospital once a week at the recreational therapy unit."

"Two days before her death, Carolyn told me she had won a scarf at the bingo. She was happy she had won it. I never gave it a thought at the time."

"The nursing staff took things like phone chargers away for the safety of the patients. They didn't want them to have anything with cables for obvious reasons. But they thought it was OK to let her have the scarf in her room."

On January 15, Carolyn?s brother Harry was contacted by Leverndale and told she had been taken to the city's Southern General Hospital.

Lisa said: "I thought she had probably had a heart attack."

"I never thought for a moment she could have harmed herself in a hospital where staff were supposed to be watching her."

"I didn't think that under their care and with her history she would be able to do that."

Carolyn was pronounced dead days later.

Lisa said: "Leverndale should have been supervising her more closely because of the suicide attempts."

Carolyn, from Nitshill, Glasgow, started showing signs of depression when Lisa was at primary school.

She attempted suicide many times over the years. And her problems escalated when she lost her home through a neighbour dispute a year ago. After that, Carolyn spent more time in hospital than out.

She and John were partners for 26 years, but lived apart.

Carolyn lived with Harry, 66, and Lisa before mental health charity SAMH managed to get temporary accommodation for her.

Lisa added: "We always worried about mum. But when she was in Leverndale, we thought she was safe."

Scottish Labour health spokeswoman Jenny Marra said: "A fatal accident inquiry should be held. It won?t bring Carolyn back but it may help in learning lessons and preventing a further tragedy."

A Scottish Government spokesman said: "All suicides are reported to the procurator fiscal, who determines if a fatal accident inquiry will be carried out."

A health board spokeswoman said: "We have launched an urgent investigation into the circumstances of this patient?s care and treatment and this will include a full significant incident review, the findings of which will be shared with the family."

With her being a regular at the hospital for suicide attempts, maybe a staffer was helping her out, so to speak.

Also, it's a little weird that she tried to hang herself and told her children's father she had won a scarf, and he didn't even think about that being dangerous. I feel like that would've set off alarms in my head, but who knows.

If someone is determined to commit suicide, they'll find a way. If it hadn't been with the scarf, it would've been some other way, some other time. Blaming everyone but the person who committed the act is ridiculous.

Bingo seems like a super weird choice for a place where so many are struggling with addiction. "I have a great idea, GAMBLING!" Next up, casino night! I know people who could actually be in the psych ward FOR bingo addiction.

??/A psych ward is not a rehab center, it's for people with severe mental problems. Yes, they may have drug addictions but those addictions are a symptom of their insanity, which is what's being treated.

At least I'm sure that Carolyn Hughes thought this was the greatest gift.

I do transcription for a psych ward of a hospital. Probably 90% of the 72 hour holds are drug addicts or alcoholics or both. Almost every suicide attempt also involves substance avise.

    Abuse. Substance abuse.

I have the only iPhone in the world that autocorrects to things that aren't even real words.

Yeah but that's not what they're being treated for. A few of my friends work as social workers and psychologists at facilities and regale me with the tales. Trust me, enabling gambling addiction is the least of their concerns.

ETA to clarify, they are alcoholics and drug addicts but that's not why they're admitted.
