At least one gunman holding hostages in Sydney Australia cafe

Sydney Cafe Hostage Update: Terrorists' Sign Reads "There Is No God But Allah"

Several gunmen took a group of people hostage in a Sydney cafe on Sunday. Although a confirmed number of hostages is not available, multiple reports cite at least 13 people being held. Two of the hostages were immediately forced up to a window and ordered to hold an Islamic flag.

A terror expert appearing on 7 News said the flag belonged to the organization Jabah Al-Nusra, however, that has not yet officially been confirmed.

Local authorities are currently working on defusing the situation. It has been reported by multiple sources that at least one of the men inside was using a young cafe worker as a human shield.

7 News also reported that "The Sydney cafe siege may be part of a larger plot," but has yet to elaborate on that.

We will continue to update this story as more information comes in.

An unidentified man took visitors to a Sydney central business district cafe hostage Monday morning, locking them in and reportedly using a young waitress as a human shield. Several other hostages are being forced to stand in front of one of the Lindt Chocolate Shop and Cafe's windows, holding a black flag bearing the Muslim declaration of faith.

There is no indication yet that the hostage-taker is affiliated with any terrorist groups. Although ISIS-related raids have been occurring regularly in the country and more than 70 Australians have gone to join the terrorist group, the Black Standard displayed in the shop's window bears a markedly different style of calligraphy. Grainy images of the suspect show him wearing a black headband with Arabic lettering.

Prime minister Tony Abbott described the "disturbing incident" using cautious language. "Australia is a peaceful, open and generous society - nothing should ever change that and that's why I would urge all Australians today to go about their business as usual," he said. Abbott suggested that the incident might by "politically motivated," but did not call it terrorism. As a precaution, though, the iconic Sydney Opera House was evacuated, as has a nearby U.S. consulate.

At a press conference, regional police commissioner Andrew Scipione said that the incident has not been classified as a terrorist attack, and that they haven't yet made contact with the armed hostage-taker. Few details are available about the situation inside the cafe, and the number of hostages is still unknown. The armed man is said to have gone into the shop after a woman pointed out his bag and weapon to police.

This is terrifying. The work colleague of my best friend was trying to get into the cafe to get a coffee when the gunman went in - he pushed her out with the gun and she ran away. It's on every news channel here. It's 9pm, so the siege has been going for almost 12 hours. The gunman has just turned out the lights in the cafe so it's pitch black.

Apparently the police have identified him. 5 people have gotten out (not clear if they were released or they escaped) and they are saying probably 10-15 more left inside.

Also, rumours are that he tried to get into the reserve bank and couldn't. A lady saw he had a gun and yelled out, and i think he possibly panicked and ran into the cafe.

"Police are scouring social media, including Twitter and Facebook, to get a better idea of what is happening inside the Sydney siege.

At least one hostage appears to have posted on Facebook about Monday?s siege and some of the gunman?s demands.

The post has since been taken down.

Scores of police officers are monitoring social media channels for posts like these that help shape how they handle the tense stand-off.

?We are monitoring what is happening (on Twitter and Facebook) and that is forming a part of our tactical response in how to handle this,? NSW Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said"

Gunfire erupted as police stormed a chocolate shop where a self-professed sheik was holding hostages in Sydney early Tuesday.

An intelligence source named the gunman as Man Haron Monis, who is also known as Sheikh Haron. He appeared to be making demands to negotiators through Facebook, YouTube and local news media.

Monis has been convicted of penning offensive letters to the families of Australian soldiers slain during the war in Afghanistan. A black flag used by Islamist groups in the Middle East had been shown in the window of the Lindt cafe.

Just after 10 a.m. ET, at least five more hostages escaped, dashing from the scene with their hands in the air. Moments later, the cafe was raided.

Flashes of light could be seen coming from inside the cafe and glass had blown out onto the street.

At least four stretchers were carried from the site. One woman, visibly distressed and bloodied, could be seen taken from the building by police. Officers could also be seen performing CPR on someone at the doorway.

Image: Man Haron Monis in 2011 DEAN LEWINS / EPA, file
Man Haron Monis arrived at a court in Sydney, Australia, on April 18, 2011.

About 20 minutes after the building was stormed, a bomb-disposal robot was seen outside the entrance.

The drama began shortly after 9:45 a.m. local time (5:45 p.m. ET Sunday). As night fell, police would not confirm how many were still being held inside the cafe. Five other people had fled the building to safety hours earlier.

Monis is described as a "cleric and activist" on a website in his name, which also likens him to WikiLeaks Julian Assange.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the gunman was "claiming political motivation." Police said they were "operating according to our counter-terrorism protocols" and ex-FBI agent Don Borelli told TODAY that the suspect appeared to be inspired by ISIS.

Radio station 2GB and television channel 10 News said they each been contacted by hostages to pass on the gunman's demands.

"We are monitoring all forms of communication — Facebook, Twitter — for any information that might assist," said Catherine Burn, deputy police commissioner in New South Wales state. "We're monitoring what is happening on Facebook … that is forming part of our tactical response."

The suspected gunman inside the Lindt cafe in Sydney, Australia, on Monday.

Speaking before the site was stormed, New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said "the very best negotiators in the world" were trying to end the standoff.

Asked about reports that hostages were being forced to use Facebook and YouTube to pass on the gunman's demands, Scipione said: "There's no place on earth that doesn't have access to social media. Our plans are built around that."

Scipione said reports of bomb threats in other parts of Sydney had been investigated but there not did not appear to be legitimate. "We are only at this stage dealing with one location we are not concerned at this stage about any other," he added.

Lindt Australia Chief Executive Steve Loane told Sky Business there were "probably 30 customers" in the cafe and 10 workers. Police refused to confirm the numbers involved.

Chris Reason, a journalist with NBC News' Australian partner Channel 7, said the hostage-taker had forced victims to "stand against windows, sometimes two hours at a time." He added that the suspect seemed to be "getting extremely agitated" after the first five hostages left.

Nearby streets and office buildings were cleared and police were seen using ladders to rescue bystanders — including babies — from the building's other floors. The U.S. Consulate in Sydney was evacuated and all U.S. personnel had been accounted for, the State Department told NBC News.

The Lindt Chocolate Cafe is in Martin Place, a busy tourist, transportation and shopping district home to several major banks — including the Reserve Bank of Australia — as well as the state Parliament. The nearby Sydney Opera House cancelled Monday night's performances.

The flag shown in the cafe's window as the hostage drama unfolded appeared to be the Tawhid Banner. NBC News terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann, added that it was frequently used by Jabhat Al-Nusra and other armed Islamist groups in the region — but not ISIS.

Grand Mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, the highest Islamic office holder in Australia, said in a statement that the Muslim community was "devastated" by the incident, adding that "such actions are denounced in part and in whole in Islam."

The hostage incident comes after police carried out a series of major anti-terrorism raids throughout Sydney in September. ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani has also urged Muslims in Australia to carry out "lone-wolf" attacks against civilians, according to terrorism analysts at the SITE Intelligence Group.

Channel Seven reporting two people dead and three injured. Other reports state five people being treated for injuries.

Reports that 11 hostages have been rescued - added to the five earlier today. Several of the hostages were carried away on stretchers.

Angry Two hostages die along with fake cleric who was previously famous for soldier hate letter campaign

Australia has been shaken since it was announced yesterday morning that people had been taken hostage in the Lindt (chocolate) cafe in Martin Place, Sydney.

Today we wake up to find out two hostages died along with that pig. Sorry for overdramatics including the headline. Its made my blood boil. In a way I hope none of the hostages were tourists.

Sydney siege: Two hostages and gunman dead after heavily armed police storm Lindt cafe in Martin Place

Two hostages and the gunman at the centre of a 16-hour siege at a cafe in Sydney's CBD have been shot dead, police have confirmed.

About 2.10am (AEDT) there was a confrontation between police and Iranian cleric Man Haron Monis, who had taken 17 people hostage inside the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Martin Place on Monday morning.

Police said shots were fired and as a result, the 50-year-old gunman was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

The two hostages killed, a man aged 34 and a woman aged 38, were also pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

VIDEO: Sydney siege: Hostages flee Lindt cafe in Martin Place (ABC News)

Monis, who was granted political asylum in Australia, took staff and customers in the cafe hostage shortly before 10:00am (AEDT) on Monday.

He was on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

This morning, NSW Premier Mike Baird addressed a media conference and said: "I come before you with the heaviest of hearts. Unbelievably overnight, we have lost some of our own in an attack we never thought we would see here in our city.

"In the past 24 hours, this city has been shaken by a tragedy that none of us could have ever imagined. The values we held dear yesterday we hold dear today. They are the values of freedom, democracy, and harmony.

"These defined us yesterday, they will define us today, they will define us tomorrow. Our first thoughts and prayers this morning are with the innocent victims of this horrendous, vicious attack."

Following the confrontation, two women were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while a male police officer is in a non life-threatening condition after a gunshot wound to his face.

The police operation has concluded and the investigation into the entire incident will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command, a police statement said.

"All information will be provided to the coroner who will determine the cause of, and make any findings about, the events leading to the deaths," the statement said.

Loud explosions and yelling could be heard from near the cafe at about 2:00am (AEDT) before officers rushed inside.

Just before police stormed the building, at least five hostages came running from the cafe with their hands up and one man lay down on the floor as police patted him down.

Minutes later what appeared to be gunfire and explosions could be heard.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the situation changed suddenly inside the cafe, allowing more of the hostages to escape.

Police then made the quick decision to put their emergency action plan into place and they moved inside the building.

Paramedic crews who had been stationed at the scene throughout the day were then seen carrying people out of the building on stretchers, and onlookers said one patient was being resuscitated.

ABC reporter Siobhan Heanue said there were two volleys of gunfire and loud explosions, in the middle of which screams could be heard.

"The sound ricocheted throughout the tall buildings around the area... and hostages started pouring out of the building," she said.

"Some running, some able to walk, some with their hands up, and some being carried by ambulance staff."

The cordon remains in place, with roads still closed, but the police presence has significantly diminished.

ABC reporter Nick Dole said the dramatic end to the siege came without warning.

He said there was a lot of yelling then a group of five hostages ran out of the western end of the cafe with their hands above their heads.

"There were a few more minutes of quiet then it was broken in dramatic fashion...with police using what could have been stun grenades.

"It was dark as the lights in the cafe had been turned off earlier.

"Officers ran inside, followed by paramedics once the area was declared safe.

"If there was live fire involved, which it appeared to be, it would have been a very dangerous situation inside the cafe."

He said police were now working to secure the scene.

"Exactly what is going on inside we don't know but we have seen evidence that perhaps police from the bomb squad would be in there," he said.

"So police are working through the Lindt cafe to at least make it safe for investigators to go through.

"We've seen a robot - what looks like a police robot.

"Police are working very hard to make the crime scene safe so the investigation can continue."

Hostages have been taken to a number of hospitals in the city.

'Sheikh' Man Haron Monis and partner in court in connection with woman's murder

[b]A SELF-styled Muslim sheikh who sent offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers has faced court in connection with the murder of a woman. [b/]

Man Haron Monis, 49, fronted Burwood Local Court yesterday charged with being an accessory before and after the fact to the murder of Noleen Hayson Pal, who was stabbed and set alight in a western Sydney apartment stairwell earlier this year.

Monis, also known as Sheikh Haron, was arrested in Campsie yesterday along with his partner Amirah Droudis, 34, who has been charged with murdering Ms Pal.

Dressed in black tracksuit pants, Monis did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. Droudis, wearing a black blouse, also did not apply for bail.

Police say the three people knew each other.

Emergency workers found Ms Pal's body in a Werrington apartment block on April 21 after responding to a fire.

The 30-year-old had allegedly been stabbed multiple times and set alight.

The pair will appear in Penrith Local Court on November 22.

Monis caused outrage when he sent letters to the grieving families of seven soldiers killed in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2009, likening the dead diggers to murderers and killers.

    Thanks Bowieluva (and sorry again)

Some info about his previous crimes-

Haron Monis had violent criminal history

Monis, who was granted political asylum in Australia, was on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

He was also facing more than 40 sexual and indecent assault charges and had a conviction for sending offensive letters to families of deceased Australian soldiers.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-1...-siege/5969246

The following bail hearing was from late last year.

'Hate' sheik Man Horan Monis and girlfriend Amirzh Droudis granted bail on murder charges

A SELF-STYLED sheik accused of colluding with his girlfriend to murder his ex-wife tried to plead guilty in court yesterday - to stealing a breakfast pack in prison.

During a lengthy and at times bizarre bail application Man Horan Monis, 49, interrupted the bail hearing of him and his co-accused, Amirzh Droudis, 34, who is charged with murder, to tell the court he wanted to plead guilty.

Monis is charged as an accessory before and after the fact to the murder of Noleen Hayson Pal, 30, who was stabbed 18 times and set alight outside a western Sydney unit in April.

He asked to be brought up from the cells at Penrith Local Court to "plead guilty to a crime I've committed".

Mr Monis' lawyer Manny Conditsis told the court his client's outburst was to plead guilty to stealing a breakfast pack in Silverwater Jail - which he hadn't been charged over - not to the charges before the court.

Prosecutor Brian Royce said Monis' claims the Iranian Secret Police and ASIO were trying to frame him for the murder was "fanciful".

Magistrate Daryl Pearce said all theories needed to be examined, adding the prosecution case was weak. He granted bail as a "simple matter of fairness".

The court heard Ms Hayson Pal had pleaded with her murderer to stop.

The Crown's chief witness, who allegedly watched the attack unfold through his peep hole, opened his door to ask "what are doing?" when he saw Ms Hayson Pal having fluid poured on her and set alight only to be told to "go back inside" by a woman wearing a "black cape" and a headscarf that didn't obscure her face.

The court heard Monis and Ms Hayson Pal had been involved an "acrimonious" custody dispute.

Mr Royce told the court Monis went to "extreme and elaborate lengths" to create an alibi while Ms Droudis committed the "brutal" murder.

Mr Royce said Monis deliberately filmed a clock, while asking for the time, at a Penrith pool before the murder and faked a car crash outside Penrith Police station after which he claimed he had chest pains and was taken to Nepean Hospital.
He said Monis made no attempts to contact his ex-wife after the accident.

Mr Conditsis said outside court the magistrate "made a courageous decision" granting bail. "It is important to note that he assessed the Crown case as weak. Mr Monis and Ms Droudis will strenuously fight these charges," he said.

The pair will reappear in court on January 22.

Kelly-Jane, I am so angry this morning that something like this has happened, so I promise I write with respect but... your post made me note the irony (? - looking for the right word) of the situation that it's been done before.

Um, already been done. Port Arthur, Martyn Bryant, Broad Arrow Cafe ... sorry, couldnt help myself.

On the bright side this helped me put it in perspective. I feel just as helpless, sad and angry at this senseless loss of life as Port Arthur and erosion of our 'freedom'.

So I'm not bigoted like a lot of commentary elsewhere would have me believe :-)

Again, no disrespect, Kelly-Jane, and I totally agree with what you said.

This is really boring Imo but if anyone wants to read the court case about his hate mail to the families of soldiers killed in action it's here:

    http://www.hcourt.gov.au/cases/case_...oibW9uaWVzIjt9

Would 4 Chan be interested in starting a similar one just so his family can see what that feels like? If I could stoop myself to his level, I would start that.

So much anger this morning, I'm going to try and calm down.
