A Cypress man racing away from police early Thursday crashed into the barriers leading to the Manhattan Beach Pier, propelling his car into a lifeguard station and careening about 100 feet along the structure, police said.

Devin Ashley Chavez, 28, was arrested on suspicion of evading police, possession of cocaine and driving under the influence following the crash, Manhattan Beach police Officer Stephanie Martin said.

It wasn?t clear what the suspect was up to when a police officer spotted his car traveling slowly, without any lights on, near Pacific School about 1 a.m.

The officer pulled in behind him to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver sped off west on Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The police officer backed off as Chavez accelerated to a high rate of speed, Martin said.

Moments later, his 2003 Honda Civic crashed through the concrete safety bollards at the base of the pier and smacked into the lifeguard building.

?The vehicle then continued onto the pier and collided into a cement bench, propelling it approximately 100 feet down the pier,? Martin said.

The badly damaged car came to a rest on the pier.

Firefighters treated Chavez, who was taken to a hospital and released for booking into jail.

Orange County Superior Court records show Chavez has had problems with the law before. In September 2005, he was charged with spousal abuse, but ultimately was convicted of battery against a cohabitant. He was sentenced to two years of probation, but six months later was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

In 2006, he was ordered to attend an alcohol program at Orange Coast College, received three days in jail and lost his driver?s license for a year, apparently resulting from a driving-under-the-influence case.

In 2009, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend counseling programs.

Department of Motor Vehicles records show his license has been suspended three times since 2009, including for drunken driving.

Following Thursday morning?s crash, the pier and immediate area were closed temporarily so they could be evaluated by lifeguard and public works officials.

The crash caused minor damage to the door and stucco on the lifeguard building, Martin said.

Are we sure the linked accounts are the same guy? He looks kinda different facially & not particularly strung out - unlike mugshot guy. He's also got massively high follower numbers (hundreds of thousands on IG) & seems to be some kind of exercise/dietary supplement flogger - plus his accounts are active & posting & pier crash guy's locked up?

Does someone actually know him in real life to know for sure? I guess it could be, but if we're only going by the mugshot & first name then I'm not so sure??

An Orange County man pleaded no contest today to charges stemming from a police chase that ended when he crashed his vehicle at the Manhattan Beach Pier about two months ago.

Superior Court Judge Thomas R. Sokolov immediately sentenced Devin Ashley Chavez, 28, of Cypress, to 16 months in state prison following his plea to one felony count of driving against traffic while fleeing a pursuing peace officer?s motor vehicle and one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.

Police tried to pull Chavez over Nov. 6 after spotting him driving in the dark with his vehicle?s headlights off, according to Deputy District Attorney Candace F. Smith.

Chavez sped away along Manhattan Beach Boulevard and eventually crashed his vehicle into a barrier at the base of the pier, then into a concrete bench.

Unless he completely changed the shape of his head, it's not the same person.
