Jason Fields (43) died of cardiac arrest, trapping his infant daughter under his body

A 10-month-old Louisiana baby survived for three days trapped under the decomposing body of her dead father after he suffered cardiac arrest, authorities said on Saturday.

The mother was in jail on misdemeanor charges at the time but was released on Saturday to care for the baby girl, Betty Jean Fields, and her five-year-old brother, who had alerted neighbors on Friday night.

"The baby was dehydrated," Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers said. "It was able to breath, expand its chest up and down ... We're very blessed that the baby didn't succumb."

Rivers said he found the father, Jason Fields, dead on a bed alongside a laptop computer at the home in the small town of Pleasant Hill. The baby was trapped between his body and the headboard.

The house had no air conditioning and Rivers said the ambient temperature was more than 100 degrees when he entered.

The infant was expected to make a full recovery after being taken to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The father, who was 43 years old, had a heart condition and died of sudden cardiac arrest, the deputy coroner said.

So what did the 5 year old do for three days while his dad was dead?

I'm glad both kids were ok.

So this 10 month old survives for three days in blazing hot temperatures, trapped under a dead body... while a 9 month old dies in her crib because her drunk parents slept until noon.

    Kids are scary.

Also, I grew up in Shreveport. /no one cares

PLEASANT HILL – A 10-month-old infant is being treated at University Health in Shreveport after being trapped underneath the decomposing body of her father for up to three days, Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers said.

The infant, Betty Jean Fields, was dehydrated and suffering from blistering skin. She also had a noticeably dark indentation on the right side of her forehead from being wedged against the wall and under the body of her father, Jason Fields, 43, according to Rivers.

Sabine sheriff's deputies were called to the Fields' residence Friday night on Marie Street in Pleasant Hill after Betty Jean's 5-year-old brother went next door to tell neighbors he thought his father was dead.

Rivers said he found Fields on the bed. His body was in an advanced state of decomposition, leaving Rivers to speculate Fiends had been dead several days. Box fans were the only source of cooling in the home.

"It looked like he was sitting on the side of the bed on his computer, fell backwards and died," Rivers said. "The fact that he fell on her and made no attempt to get up tells me he died instantly when he fell on top of her."

Fields had a history of cardiac problems, Rivers said. No autopsy will be performed because of the condition of the body. There were no signs of trauma.

The older child was checked out. He did not suffer any injuries. Rivers did not interview the boy so he was uncertain how he coped during the days before he went for help.

Fields' wife was incarcerated in the Sabine Parish women's jail with only a few more days to serve. District Judge Stephen Beasley granted her early release so she could care for the children, Rivers said.

Okay, 3 makes more sense. I was not understanding why the heck a 5-year-old wouldn't know to look for/help the baby.

Her mother was in jail on misdemeanor charges at the time of her daughter's rescue but was released on Saturday to care for the baby girl and her older brother.
That brother, 3-year-old Jeremiah Kelly, is credited with helping rescue his baby sister, KHOU reports.
Kelly discovered the body and then told neighbors he thought his father was dead.
No drugs or foul play are suspected in Fields' death.
Kristy Fields said her brothers health had been deteriorating in the years since his congestive heart failure and stroke.
'He's been downhill since then,' she said.
A funeral for Fields was planned for Saturday.
