"Dexter" fanatic Steven Miles (16) stabbed and dismembered Elizabeth Thomas (17)

Steven Miles, now 17, killed Elizabeth Thomas at his family?s home in Oxted, Surrey, in January. He pleaded guilty at Guildford Crown Court on 9 September.

The Press Association reported that Miles, who was 16 at the time, stabbed Thomas in her head and back before cutting off her legs and arm, wrapping the body parts in clingfilm, and placing them in bin bags.

The teenager, who had been diagnosed with an autistic syndrome, reportedly had an alter ego called Ed. When his sister returned home shortly after Thomas?s murder, Miles told her: ?Ed made me do something bad.?

PA said the boy had used tools and saws from his father?s tree surgery business to cut up Thomas? body.
Guildford crown court heard how the teen was a fan of horror films and Dexter, the TV series about a fictional forensics expert who is a secret serial killer.

Lewis Power of the defence said: ?This was a truly gruesome killing ripped from the pages of a hit TV script. The evidence points to the defendant trying to emulate the actions of the character Dexter, who he idolised.

?The case is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched in modern TV blockbusters involving violence which shockingly led to a copycat killing in real life.?

Judge Christopher Critchlow said he would have passed a whole life term if Miles had been an adult.

Judge Critchlow told Miles in court: ?You decided, at the age of 16, you had to kill somebody. You chose Elizabeth Thomas, who tragically befriended you and who had stood up for you when people described you as different. It?s chilling to read that you described her on occasion as your project.?

Psychiatrists declared that Miles is not schizophrenic, and therefore the defence of diminished responsibility could not be claimed.

I don't remember. I think it was more of what he did to her body afterwards that they are comparing to Dexter. I could be wrong.

yes he killed serial killers, but then he dismembered them and put them in bags.

dexter would have killed normal people if it wasn't for harry's code. it seems that this kid had no such code.

His mugshot looks like it's from a ladies prison.

That aside, I feel for this girl and her family. It seemed she went out of her way to befriend someone who was a bit different and paid for it. I wonder rig since the family knows about " Ed" if the guy has a history of these acts, or if Ed was just a show he put on for them based on what he watched. How did they determine no diminished capacity? I am interested to know more.

Teen Obsessed With 'Dexter' Given Life Sentence After Dismembering Girlfriend

Steven Miles did it just like the fictional character "Dexter" did.

He murdered his victim for the thrill, then dismembered the body and hid the parts in plastic bags. The difference between Miles and "Dexter" is that Dexter killed other serial killers. Miles killed his girlfriend and will spend the rest of his life behind bars in England, unless he makes parole after 25 years.

Miles was just 16-years-old when he killed his girlfriend, Elizabeth Thomas, according to the BBC. He admitted in court that he stabbed her in the back of the head on Jan. 24 in his parents Oxted home, then chopped up her body. He put the parts in plastic bags but was arrested the same day.

He said he was trying to emulate the "Dexter" series, in which a forensics investigator turns serial killer.

"This is a case of the utmost gravity, the horrific features of which are rarely heard in any court," Judge Christopher Critchlow said before sentencing Miles this week, according to the New York Daily News.

"Nothing this court can say or do, no sentence this court can impose can alleviate the pain suffered by Elizabeth Thomas' family for death in such a terrible manner. There must be a life sentence."

Miles had been diagnosed with autism in the past and sought mental health services when he heard voices. Police say he told his family that his alter ego named Ed told him to murder someone.

"Ed made me do something bad," he reportedly told his sister shortly after the killing.

Miles pleaded guilty to murder on Sept. 9, ABC News reports.

Thomas was described by family members as "really pretty, really funny and really kind," Surrey Police told ABC.
