    ISIS Discussion

I thought maybe we could start a thread on ISIS related stuff.

Put yourself in the shoes (and sixth-century black robes) of ISIS' Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the mysterious boss of the terror group that is striking fear into the hearts of leaders around the world.
In the past couple of years you've managed to avoid drone attacks and survive civil wars, unify militant groups in two different countries under your banner, raise an army of jihadis from across the globe, and seize a chunk of land stretching from northern Syria to central Iraq.
Your newly-declared "Islamic State" is the size of Pennsylvania, so how do you govern it? You compartmentalize.
New data from the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium (TRAC) has revealed that ISIS is putting governing structures in place to rule the territories the group conquers once the dust settles on the battlefield.
The research shows how ISIS has gone from being a purely military force to building a system that can provide basic services, such as making sure that gas and food are available, to its new citizens.
From the cabinet and the governors to the financial and legislative bodies, ISIS' bureaucratic hierarchy looks a lot like those of some of the Western countries whose values it rejects -- if you take away the democracy and add in a council to consider who should be beheaded.

Baghdadi, his Cabinet advisers and his two key deputies comprise the executive branch of the government, known as "Al Imara."
The two deputies -- Abu Ali al-Anbari and Abu Muslim al-Turkmani, veteran Iraqi military officials who served under Saddam Hussein -- oversee Syria and Iraq, respectively.
ISIS has probably split the governance of the "Islamic State" into Syrian and Iraqi branches simply to make it easier to run, according to Jasmine Opperman, TRAC's Southern Africa Director.
"They see the caliphate as one state, yet there are two different governments," Opperman told CNN. "I believe this split is purely administrative at this time. They don't want to be seen as downplaying the caliphate, but to make it easier to govern they were forced to make a separation between Syria and Iraq."
The two deputies deliver orders to the governors in charge of the various sub-states in Syria and Iraq under ISIS control, who then instruct local councils on how to implement the executive branch's decrees on everything from media relations and recruiting to policing and financial matters.
The Shura council -- which reports directly to the executive branch -- is the caliphate's religious monitor, appointed to make sure that all the local councils and governors are sticking to ISIS' version of Islamic law.
The recent murders of Western hostages James Foley, Steven Sotloff, and David Haines would have fallen under the Shura council's purview, according to Opperman.
"Let's say a significant execution is going to take place, something that will get ISIS on the front page of the newspaper," Opperman said. "It cannot be done without Shura council approval."
The Shura council also has the power to censure the leadership for running afoul of its interpretation of Sharia law, according to Opperman.
"The Shura council has the right to tell Baghdadi to go if he's not adhering to ISIS' religious standards," she told CNN. "It would most probably never happen, but the fact that it's possible indicates the council's prominence."
Baghdadi -- who was once imprisoned by U.S. forces in Iraq -- seems to have incorporated the American military's own counter-insurgency mantra of "Clear and Hold" to win territory, establish control over the area, then get the locals to help govern it.
As time goes on, ISIS is evolving into a government whose political decision-making cannot be separated from its military capabilities, according to Opperman.
"It's two sides of the same coin," she said. "We've seen the military side, with the war cabinet that directs brigades. But now on the other side we're seeing how ISIS wants to govern. The two processes inform one another."

Austrian teen who joined jihadists in Syria thought to have been killed: report
Two teen girls from the Austrian capital of Vienna fled their home country to join jihadists, according to reports in Austrian media. A spokesperson from the country's Interior Ministry said the government has information that indicates one of the girls was already killed but it has not been confirmed officially.

Samra Kesinovic, 16, is thought to have run away to Syria to join the Islamic State

Sabina Selimovic, 15, fled Austria to join the jihadists, according to local reports.

Authorities fear that the teens were being used to recruit other young girls.

Two Austrian girls reportedly ran away from home in April to join ISIS in Syria — and one might already be dead.

Samra Kesinovic, 16, and Sabina Selimovic, 15, vanished from their homes in Vienna and started posting troubling images of themselves online, according to Austrian media.

These pictures show the girls in burkas standing beside terrorists clutching Kalashnikov rifles.

Many fear these images are being used to recruit other young girls to become jihadists.

Alexander Marakovits, spokesman for the country’s Interior Ministry, said that they have received intelligence that indicates one of the girls might have been killed during the ongoing fighting in the region, reported The Salzburger News.

Government officials have not officially confirmed this claim.

"We also have this information and have checked it, but cannot say with absolute certainty that it is true. But the parents have been informed their daughter could be dead," Marakovits told the German-language paper, as translated by The Local.

It is not known which teen was thought to have been killed.

The rumor about the girl's death was challenged by other reports claiming she was actually alive and pregnant.

The girls come from Bosnian refugee families who settled in Austria after the Bosnian War of the early '90s, reported Central European News.

Both girls were born in Austria. Authorities are investigating how the pair was persuaded to flee Austria for Syria. The Daily Express reports that up to 130 people from Austria are thought to be fighting abroad with Islamic terrorists.

Two more teen girls from Austria also fled the country allegedly to join terrorists in Syria, according to the British paper.

Huge raids in Sydney & QLD last night. It's whipped up a lovely anti-muslim frenzy on most news sites & the NSW Police's own fb page.

The raids involved ASIO (our sneaky, creepy anti-subversive spy guys - they've been snapping b&w pix of communist sympathisers since forever so I guess they needed a new hobby), the Australian Federal Police (not anything like the FBI, they deal with anything that breaches international or Federal law) & QLD & NSW state police.

They say there was an ISIS plot to drag people off the streets, behead them & post it on social media. Whether this was a serious threat or just a bunch of western suburbs school boys getting stoned, playing xbox & saying "heyyy, we should, we should, we should kill sum fucken Aussies hurrhurrhurr" remains to be seen. The riot squad definitely busted up a couple if 15 yr olds, & lots of young guys saw their mums & sisters cuffed by police. If they weren't all extremists, & there wasn't a serious plot to do this before the raids, things might've changed overnight.

(I know it's quite possible they did get it right but I'd be a lot more inclined to believe that if we had just about any other prime minister than the prick we've got right now. He wants to commit troops & he needs a reason & public support. Judging by the comments on articles he's got both now).

Video Shows ISIS-Affiliated Group Beheading Frenchman

A newly released video shows an al Qaeda splinter group in Algeria beheading a French citizen, days after giving French President Francois Hollande a 24-hour deadline to stop airstrikes against ISIS. Hollande confirmed the killing in an address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

The group, which calls itself Jund al-Khilafah — Soldiers of the Caliphate — had issued the deadline threatening the life of Frenchman Herve Gourdel, 55, in another video that appeared on social media Monday.

“Today I am speaking before you with a particularly high level of emotion because one of my compatriots has just been the subject of a cowardly assassination in Algeria,” Hollande said. “He was abducted and he was beheaded. This is what terrorism does.”

He went on to say that terrorists also kill Muslims and minorities. “They rape. They kill. It is for this reason that the fight that the international community needs to wage against terrorism knows no borders,” he said.

France's forces joined the U.S. in executing airstrikes on Sept. 19 against ISIS, the militant extremist group that has overrun parts of Syria and Iraq.

The Soldiers of the Caliphate pledge allegiance to the leader of ISIS, which recently beheaded two Americans, James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and a Briton, David Haines. They have threatened the life of another Briton, Alan Henning.

There were reports of planned "lone wolf" style attacks like the Boston bombing and the public beheading in London on the US and the west, including Australia. Also there are reports of many terrorists carrying western passports. Thousands of them from the UK.

    http://news.yahoo.com/us-syria-raids...085855998.html
Washington (AFP) - A US-led air attack against jihadists in Syria targeted Al-Qaeda's Khorasan group because it was on the verge of carrying out "major attacks" against the West, the US military said Tuesday.
The Americans pounded Khorasan targets in Syria with Tomahawk cruise missiles to counter the mounting threat posed by the group, said Lieutenant General William Mayville, director of operations for the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"Intelligence reports indicated that the group was in the final stages of plans to execute major attacks against western targets and potentially the US homeland," Mayville told reporters.
The strikes against the Khorasan militants early Tuesday were separate from a wave of bombing raids led by the United States and joined by several Arab countries that targeted the Islamic State group.

Earlier, the Pentagon had said that US air strikes killed Khorasan members hatching plots against Western targets.

US Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East, had announced that American forces carried out eight air strikes against Khorasan group targets west of Aleppo.

Mayville said more than 40 Tomahawk missiles were launched from naval ships in the Gulf and the Red Sea, and that "the majority of the Tomahawk strikes were against Khorasan."

The Khorasan group was not focused on battling the Syrian regime or aiding the Syrian people but instead is "establishing roots in Syria in order to advance attacks against the West and the homeland," he said.
Speaking of the broader air campaign that included Arab states, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said "our initial indication is that these strikes were very successful."

And he signaled that more bombing raids in Syria were to come.

"I can tell you that last night's strikes were only the beginning," Kirby said.

President Barack Obama ordered the bombing raids in Syria last Thursday, a day after conferring with commanders at Central Command headquarters in Tampa, Florida, the White House said.

    - Three waves of air strikes -

The US military was "unaware of any civilian casualties" from the strikes and the air attack was planned to minimize the risk to civilians in the area, Mayville said.

The general acknowledged there was evidence IS fighters were already dispersing and moving towards population centers to hide from the sights of US attack aircraft.

But he said there was no need at the moment to bring in tactical air controllers on the ground to direct bombing raids to avoid civilian casualties.

The first wave of strikes Tuesday featured mainly Tomahawk cruise missiles, the second wave had US fighter planes and B-1 bombers hitting targets and then the third wave included Arab warplanes and American F/A-18 jets flying from an aircraft carrier, the George H.W. Bush, in the Gulf, Mayville said.

IS group leaders were not specifically targeted in the raids but US and Arab aircraft aimed at "command and control" centers, he said.

The operation broke new ground with four Arab countries sending in aircraft to take part, which US officials said demonstrated regional states were committed to fighting the IS extremists.

Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates played direct roles in the operation while Qatar played a supporting role, officials said, without providing details.

The "preponderance" of bombs dropped were from US aircraft, Mayville said.

The Damascus regime views the IS group as an adversary, and the White House said President Bashar al-Assad's government was told in advance about the plan to attack -- but in general terms.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, passed the word to her Syrian counterpart, said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser.

But he and other officials insisted the air strikes were not coordinated in any way with Assad's army.

Asked if Syrian regime air defense radar locked onto to US or allied aircraft, Mayville suggested the regime did not target the incoming warplanes.

The general said "radar acquisition on the part of Syria, I would characterize as passive."

The overnight operation was the first in which the US military's costly, new F-22 Raptor fighter jet was used in combat.

The general showed reporters aerial photos of targets bombed by the stealthy F-22s, with the planes unleashing precision-guided bombs on an IS command and control site in a building.

"This strike was the first time the F-22 was used in a combat role," Mayville said. He said the F-22s "destroyed" the intended target.

The Real Reason We Are Bombing Syria (according to dennis kucinich)

The administration's response to the conjunction of this weekend's People's Climate March and the International Day of Peace?

    1) Bomb Syria the following day, to wrest control of the oil from ISIS which gained its foothold directly in the region through the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Jordan funding and arming ISIS' predecessors in Syria.

    2) Send the president to UN General Assembly, where he will inevitably give a rousing speech about climate and peace, while the destruction of the environment and the shattering of world peace is on full display 5,000 miles away.

Nothing better illustrates the bankruptcy of the Obama administration's foreign policy than funding groups that turn on the U.S. again and again, a neo-con fueled cycle of profits for war makers and destruction of ever-shifting "enemies."

The fact can't be refuted: ISIS was born of Western intervention in Iraq and covert action in Syria.

This Frankenstein-like experiment of arming the alleged freedom-seeking Syrian opposition created the monster that roams the region. ISIS and the U.S. have a curious relationship -- mortal enemies that, at the same time, benefit from some of the same events:

    a) Ousting former Iraqi President Nouri al Maliki for his refusal to consent to the continued presence of U.S. troops in his country.

    b) Regime change in Syria.

    c) Arming the Kurds so they can separate from Iraq, a preliminary move to partitioning Iraq.

What a coincidence for war-profiteering neo-cons and the war industry, which has seen its stock rise since last week's congressional vote to fund the rapid expansion of war. We have met the enemy and he isn't only ISIS, he is us.

Phase two of the war against Syria is the introduction of 5,000 "moderate" mercenaries (as opposed to immoderate ones), who were trained in Saudi Arabia, the hotbed of Wahhabism, at an initial installment cost of $15 billion. These new "moderates" will replace the old "moderates," who became ISIS, just in time for Halloween.

The administration, in the belief that you can buy, rent, or lease friends where they otherwise do not exist, labor under the vain assumption that our newfound comrades-in-arms will remain in place during their three-year employment period, ignoring the inevitability that those "friends" you hire today could be firing at you tomorrow.

One wonders if Saudi training of these moderate mercenaries will include methods of beheading which were popularized by the Saudi government long before their ISIS progeny took up the grisly practice.

    The U.S. is being played.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia can now overtly join with the U.S. in striking Syria, after they have been covertly attempting for years to take down the last secular state in the region. We are now advancing the agenda of the actual Islamic States -- Saudi Arabia and Qatar -- to fight the ersatz Islamic State of ISIS.

Now U.S. bombs and missiles might inadvertently "make the world safe" for theocracy rather than democracy. Today we read reports that Israel has shot down a Syrian warplane, indicating the terrible possibility of a wider regional conflict.

What does this have to do with the security of the 50 States United? Nothing!

Last week Congress acted prematurely in funding a war without following the proscriptions of Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. (The day of the vote, I urged Congress to resist this dangerous and misguided legislation.) But even while the funding was given, the explicit authorization to go to war was not. To authorize a war, Congress must vote for war. It has not done that yet.

To sell its case, the administration is borrowing from the fear mongering tactics of the Bush administration. ISIS poses no direct, immediate threat to the United States -- The White House even said so yesterday, just hours before bombing commenced - yet we are being sold make-believe about ISIS sleeper cells.

This attack on Syria, under the guise of striking ISIS, is by definition, a war of aggression. It is a violation of international law. It could lead to crimes against humanity and the deaths of untold numbers of innocent civilians. No amount of public relations or smooth talking can change that.

And yes, members of this Democratic administration, including the president who executed this policy, must be held accountable by the International Criminal Court and by the American people, who he serves.

But as we know, war is a powerful and cynical PR tactic. I expect the bombing of Syria will momentarily boost the White House's popularity with self-serving heroic accounts of damage inflicted upon ISIS (and the U.S. equipment they use). Stuffing the November ballot box with bombs and missiles may even help the Democratic Party retain the Senate.

But after the election the voters will discover that the president played into the hands of extremists, hurt civilians, and embroiled our country deep into another conflict in the Middle East.

There were alternatives. The U.S. and the international community could have contained and shrunk ISIS by cutting off its funds and its revenue from sale of oil on the black market. We could have looked to strike a deal with Syria and Iran.

In foreign policy, the administration has failed. Congress has failed. Both the Democratic and Republican Parties have passed the national checkbook to their patrons in the war contracting business. And passed the bill to future generations.

The American people, who in 2008 searched for something redemptive after years of George W. Bush's war, realize in 2014 that hope and change was but a clever slogan. It was used to gain power and to keep it through promoting fear, war, the growth of the National Security state, and an autumnal bonfire of countless billions of tax dollars which fall like leaves from money trees on the banks of the Potomac.

It's nuts down here right now, first the major terror raids a week ago - 800 officers resulting in 2 arrests

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-1...t-raid/5754276

An arranged meeting in a police station car park between the AFP, Vic Police & a teen missed in last weeks raids resulted in the officers stabbed & the teen shot dead. It's being reported as the first attempt at beheadings

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/in-d...-1227068708254

Then claims he was monitoring the P.M's travel schedule

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k_eL-LHgXRE

Members of parliament warned to keep their blinds closed as a defense against sniper attack

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-2...inds-s/5768036

It's getting really nasty. I don' t doubt there's an element that will attempt to carry out these acts, but the way it's being hyped means moderate Muslim & Middle Eastern Christian Australians are going to be at greater risk of attack than every other Australian is from ISIS supporters - & any kids claiming ISIS allegiance out of teen stupidity might just get alienated enough to get serious about it.

It's reminiscent of the hysteria over German & Japanese immigrants in the 40's - we locked them up in internment camps & shot quite a few during a breakout into the bush at Cowra.

Meanwhile other major stories (like a possible - & incredibly rare - non-family child abduction from a stretch of tourist coast at the start of school holidays - something that would normally be front page news) are barely being reported. Shit's getting crazy - & I mean the venom-spitting reactions, not the threat itself. Our media & gov't are issuing a steady stream of hate & fear - it hasn't let up, it's like the clock's been turned back 50+ years & people are leaping at the chance to call for violence & deportation against anyone who's Muslim

I haven't seen Sarah Palin in action but I've seen this shining example of our federal politicians called "Jackie Lambie : Australia's Own Sarah Palin". She's got lots of supporters in "certain" sections of the population - basically because they think alike - which is not a good thing to admit to

(& of course shit like this isn't going to offend moderate Muslims & create ill-feeling)

9 Arrested in UK Part of Investigations into 'Islamist Related Terrorism'
    http://6abc.com/news/9-arrested-in-u...rorism/323480/
    Thursday, September 25, 2014

Police in London arrested nine men today as part of ongoing investigations into "Islamist related terrorism," the city's Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement.

The men - ranging in age from 22 to 51 - are accused of being members of a banned group and encouraging terrorism.

Several homes and businesses in London were also being searched, police said.

The statement said that the arrests and searches "are not in response to any immediate public safety risk."

A prominent female Iraqi human rights lawyer and campaigner has been publicly executed days after posting anti-ISIS messages on her Facebook page, the U.N. said Thursday. Samira Salih al-Nuaimi was killed by a masked firing squad in a public square in the city of Mosul, an act described as "horrifying" by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. She was tortured before her death on Monday, the U.N. said.

Al-Nuaimi, a well-known figure in Mosul, was remembered for her courageous work promoting the rights of women and helping the poor. "She used to stand before courts in order to defend those who were detained by U.S. forces, and she did that for free," a Mosul resident told NBC News. Al-Nuaimy was detained Sept. 17 after she posted messages on Facebook describing ISIS' bombing and destruction of mosques and shrines in Mosul as "barbaric." She was accused by the self-styled Islamic court of apostasy and sentenced to death by ISIS fighters. Her body will be handed to family who have been warned against conducting a funeral ceremony, a local journalist told NBC.

Okay I am just now checking out this thread, and reading about the 2 teen girls who fled Austria for Syria, and I'm all "WHAT?!" I will totally admit I don't follow any of this sort of stuff (I know, bad American!) but I just don't why 15 or 16 year old girls would want to do this! I mean, my 15 year old self wouldn't even know how to get to Syria! I just....don't get what the deal is....just...why?!?!

    & it begins

    http://m.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/ne...-1227071322109

A GROUP of men have threatened to “run over” and “behead” a bearded man they believed was Muslim in a terrifying anti-Islamic attack at Ashmore overnight. The disgusting Gold Coast attack comes as a 66-year-old Logan man was charged for allegedly abusing a Muslim woman with her children at a supermarket this week. Coast police have confirmed about 8.30pm last night four men in a white commodore threatened a bearded man who was stopped at the lights at the intersection of Benowa Road and Wardoo Street.

GOLD COAST MOSQUES PATROLLED AMIDST TERROR FEARS

The bearded man was told he would be “run over” and “beheaded” despite explaining his background — New Zealand. Police believe the commodore had P-plates but do not have registration details. Queensland Police patrol services Superintendent Mat Rosevear slammed the attack and warned the perpetrators, if caught could face multiple charges, including assault. “Even making threats of this nature is still threatening to harm someone and this means they can be charged with assault,” he said.

"We cannot blame people’s race or religion for the actions of a select few who may have similar backgrounds. “We are monitoring this situation and will be following it up.” The attack comes just two days after police were ordered to regularly patrol the Gold Coast’s only mosque at Arundel for fear of “hate attacks”. Investigations into the incident are continuing, anyone who witnessed the abuse or with information are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Note the headline in the middle says mosques are being patrolled amidst "terror" fears - implying police are making sure Muslims don' t attack their fellow Gold Coast reisdents.

When you actually read the article it says the patrols are to prevent "hate" attacks against Muslims.

Counterterrorism Chief: Parents Should Watch For ‘Sudden Personality Changes’ In Children
    April 18, 2014 10:53 AM

Delivering a speech at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government on Tuesday, White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser Lisa Monaco said that local communities have to be aware of terrorist threats where the government cannot, noting that parents should watch for “sudden personality changes in their children at home.”

Cambridge, Mass. (CBS DC) – Delivering a speech at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government on Tuesday, White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser Lisa Monaco said that local communities have to be aware of terrorist threats where the government cannot, noting that parents should watch for “sudden personality changes in their children at home.”

In the speech at the Harvard Kennedy School Forum entitled, “Countering Violent Extremism and the Power of Community,” Monaco made mention of the Boston Marathon bombings anniversary and the Kansas shootings at Jewish community complexes.

“President Obama has been laser-focused on making sure we use all the elements of our national power to protect Americans, including developing the first government-wide strategy to prevent violent extremism in the United States,” said Monaco, in a transcript made available by the White House. “At the same time, we recognize that there are limits to what the federal government can do.”

Monaco continued, saying that local communities have to share some responsibility in awareness of possible terrorist threats within the U.S.

“Local communities are the most powerful asset we have in the struggle against violence and violent extremism,” said Monaco. “We’ve crunched the data on this. In the more than 80 percent of cases involving homegrown violent extremists, people in the community—whether peers or family members or authority figures or even strangers—had observed warning signs a person was becoming radicalized to violence.”

Monaco said that many of these warning signs are ignored, and that local communities and parents should be more wary of problems developing domestically. She listed a series of behaviors that may indicate a growing threat.

“Parents might see sudden personality changes in their children at home—becoming confrontational. Religious leaders might notice unexpected clashes over ideological differences. Teachers might hear a student expressing an interest in traveling to a conflict zone overseas. Or friends might notice a new interest in watching or sharing violent material.”

“The government is rarely in position to observe these early signals, so we need to do more to help communities understand the warning signs, and then work together to intervene before an incident can occur.”

Monaco said that in addition to citizen alertness, the Department of Homeland Security is increasing its partnerships across the country and making hundreds of millions of dollars in grant money available annually to local law enforcement to help improve anti-terrorism security at the municipal and county level.

Headline yesterday that was run by multiple Aus news agencies & article blatantly accompanied by pix from the attack on police in Victoria by an ISIS terror suspect (in the unlikely event readers failed to make the leap from "middle-eastern appearance" to terrorist)

Uniformed Australian Defence Force member allegedly attacked by men of middle eastern appearance in western Sydney

Praise for police as terror tensions rise

Police investigating incident in Bella Vista at 6am
    Punches thrown, ?beheading? threats made
Defence force members told to be on their guard
A MEMBER of the Australian defence forces has been assaulted and threatened by two men of Middle Eastern appearance in Bella Vista in north-western Sydney.

The attack follows the knife attack on two police officers in Victoria that ended with an 18-year-old Islamic extremist being shot dead in Victoria.

Members of the Defence Forces have been told to be careful where they wear their uniforms in public

    Today's far smaller headlines

    http://www.9news.com.au/national/201...-men-in-sydney

Police investigating a claim that an Australian navy officer was assaulted by two men who threatened to cut his throat in Sydney?s north-west yesterday morning have announced the allegations have been dropped. Despite the withdrawal, police will continue to examine the circumstances that led to the allegation being brought to their attention. Chief of Defence Mark Binskin has this afternoon apologised to the Middle Eastern community for any angst the allegations caused.

Allegations a uniformed navy officer was assaulted and threatened in Sydney have been withdrawn. (AAP) "On behalf of the Australian Defence Force I would like to apologise to the Australian community and, in particular, the Middle Eastern community for any angst that this has caused," he said.

In response to officers being told to use their judgment when considering going out in uniform, he said they needed to make an assessment depending on the situation. "They know through common sense where they should wear uniform and where it might not be right to wear uniform. "They're proud of the uniform that we wear. They're proud of what we do globally, day in and day out but they are aware of the situation, they're not immune to what's going on and they continue to keep an eye on their surroundings."

The 41-year-old sailor told police he was in full uniform when he was assaulted at Bella Vista at 6.30am yesterday. He allegedly suffered minor bruising in the attack. The men were described as being of Middle Eastern appearance. Defence last week raised the alert level at all its bases and establishments after the national terrorism public alert level was increased to high.

I'm not in the city so don't know how bad it's really getting & if these people are just drama queens, but in southwestern Sydney where I grew up posts are beginning to appear from mothers of teenage boys/young men saying their pleading with their sons to shave their beards because they're afraid they'll be mistaken for teens of middle eastern descent & attacked.

((there are parts of Sydney where this wouldn't be surprising, so it' s probably true)

People are being whipped into such a frenzy over anyone who "looks Muslim" that their attention is going to be too unfocused to notice the ones who really are a threat. The moderate Muslim community is going to be so distracted by defending themselves & their children against hate attacks that they could mistake worrying extremist comments as someone who's just rightfully emotional about the hate & propaganda. Everyone loses when shit gets like this (except the people pushing new security legislation through parliament, that works out just fine)

ETA only just started, but once incidents start being reported - & "decent Aussies" start trolling the page it'll provide an ugly little snapshot of the great uncensored public

Just a tiny look at what the "War on ISIS" has meant for Australia in recent days

Following the stabbing of AFP & Vic Police officers & while anti-Muslim hysteria ensues, this was rushed through our parliament & is now law

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/on...-1227071116071

SPIES will have ?infinite? reach to monitor Australians? activities online as part of a new suite of anti-terror reforms that the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) has branded as of ?enormous concern?. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has been granted the power to essentially monitor the entire Australian web with only one warrant, with the government?s first set of national security laws passing the Senate with bipartisan support last night.

With Australia on high alert for terrorism on domestic soil, the government has been able to beef up the surveillance powers of our domestic spy agency quickly. ALA spokesman and barrister Greg Barns has slammed the laws, saying ?they can essentially do an enormous amount under one warrant?.

?They can dress up a warrant to give themselves major leverage,? he told news.com.au. Australia has no specific laws that protect privacy, so innocent people who may be monitored have ?very little by way of redress in legal terms?. Mr Barns said the law had been drafted in ?such a shoddy way? as to allow the agency to spy on as many as 5 million Australians with one warrant

I guess this is ISIS. IDK.

Sharia law is coming': Facebook rants of fired Muslim convert store-worker who beheaded female colleague and stabbed another woman before being shot by CEO
Alton Nolen, 30, allegedly beheaded Colleen Hufford, 54, at Vaughan Foods
He also 'stabbed co-worker Traci Johnson, 43, during attack in Oklahoma'
Seconds later, Nolen was shot and wounded by firm's CEO Mark Vaughan
Co-workers revealed that Nolen, who has an extensive rap sheet, had recently converted to Islam and had tried to get them to convert as well
He apparently celebrated terrorism on Facebook in months before attack
He posted image of Pope Benedict XVI, saying: 'SHARIA LAW IS COMING!'
Also uploaded photo of 9/11, writing Statue of Liberty is 'going into flames'
FBI is investigating whether conversion to Islam linked to alleged killing

Salute: Alton Alexander Nolen, 30, attacked Colleen Hufford and Traci Johnson after he was sacked from Vaughan Foods in Oklahoma, police said. Above, Nolen (centre) apparently performs ISIS's one-finger salute

Under the name 'Jah'Keem Yisrael', the suspect posted an image of Pope Benedict XVI to the social networking site, accompanied by the caption: 'SHARIA LAW IS COMING!!'.
Meanwhile, in another, he uploaded a photo of the Joker from the Batman series alongside a message criticising the 'wicked' U.S. for not helping the people of Gaza against Israel.

Other posts saw Nolen reading the Koran, donning Muslim religious clothing, praying in a mosque and seemingly performing the one-figure salute of the Islamic State terror group.
Earlier this year, Nolen, whose Facebook 'cover' photo appears to show several Taliban fighters, posted a photo of the 9/11 attacks, writing: 'A future prophecy revelation 18.8. She (the Statue of Liberty) is going into flames. She and anybody who's with her',

He also apparently posted images of Osama bin Laden, deadly weaponry, a poster reading 'Islam will dominate the world' and children learning how to shoot guns.
The FBI is investigating Nolen's recent conversion to Islam to determine whether it was connected to the beheading and stabbing at the food processing plant in Moore on Thursday.
The bureau will work in conjunction with the Moore Police Department to chart Nolen's background as his motives are still unclear, Fox News reported.
Following his sacking on Thursday, Nolen returned to his SUV before smashing it into another vehicle, Moore Police Sergeant Jeremy Lewis said.
He then allegedly climbed out and entered the building, before attacking the first two people he saw - Ms Hufford and Ms Johnson - with a knife he had used at work.
On Friday, 911 calls revealed the panic of employees, with a caller telling the dispatcher: 'They're in the office, front office of the building. Yeah, we can hear a lot of screaming.
'We don't know where the person went and he went through our front office, went through the shipping office and stabbed a woman in our customer service department.'
Nolen could then be heard running, before three gun shots rang out,KFOR reported. 'Stay down! Stay down!' the caller told his fellow employees.

Yesterday, authorities applauded Vaughan, an Oklahoma County reserve deputy, for his shooting of Nolen, which was deemed to have saved Ms Johnson's and other employees' lives.
'This was not going to stop if he didn't stop it,' Lewis said. 'It could have gotten a lot worse.'
Sheriff John Whetsel with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office added in a statement: 'These were heinous criminal acts that were ended by the quick response of Oklahoma County Reserve Deputy Sheriff Mark Vaughan.
'I am extremely proud of the actions of Deputy Vaughan and I am convinced those actions saved the lives of several other employees.

'Mr. Vaughan, who serves as CEO of Vaughan Foods, was at work and when he was alerted that a man was attacking employees with a knife, Mark didn't hesitate. He quickly responded.
'Mark put an end to the threat by shooting the suspect and saving the life of a second victim who was being actively attacked by the suspect.
'There is every reason to believe that the lives of untold others were saved who would have been targeted by the suspect if it hadn't been for Deputy Vaughan's actions.'
Sergeant Lewis, who said he does not know why Nolen was fired, added that police are waiting until he was conscious before they move forward with charges.

On Friday, Lewis said that Nolen had been trying to convert co-workers to Islam and that local police had contacted the FBI to help investigate the man's background, KFOR reported.
Co-workers said Nolen himself had only just converted to Islam, according to News9. It is not yet known if his beliefs played a role in the attack.
There were no immediate indications of a link to terrorism, officials said.
Announcing the FBI's involvement in the case, police released a statement saying: 'After conducting interviews with Nolen's co-workers, information was obtained that he recently started trying to convert several employees to the Muslim religion.
