William Tyrrell, 3, Missing From His Grandma's Front Verandah, Mid North Coast NSW

A special message that embarrassingly, only seems to be needed for threads on Australian cases
    ************************************************** ************************************************** *********

    New to MDS?

This little boy was initially thought to have wandered into the bush & become lost like so many others before him. It's happened so often that there's been stories from the 1800's about kids being lured by the Min Min & songs written about it.

But this little guy is wearing a bright blue & red Spiderman suit. He should stand out in the Australian bush. There are hundreds of SES volunteers, police & others looking for him & they've been searching 5 days now. They've got dogs & choppers these days too - they should've found him by now.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-1...yo-boy/5745982

The search for three-year-old William Tyrell is being expanded to three kilometres around the spot where he was last seen five days ago.

William vanished on Friday while playing in a Spider-Man suit on the balcony of his grandmother's home on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers, police and members of the local community have been combing nearby bushland since his disappearance.

It is believed he wandered into thick bushland while playing at his grandmother's home at Kendall.

Police Superintendent Paul Fehon said investigators would be revisiting ground already covered in the search.

"Yesterday they covered and recovered over the 1.5-kilometre diameter area around where William was last seen and today we'll be expanding that thorough search out to three kilometres," he said.

"Our investigative teams have been bolstered. We have 30 investigators out there working.

"They will be conducting canvasses of the areas and they will be following up on any information that has been provided to us."

Family friend Nicole said the boy's family just wanted him back.

"The family [is] grateful that the police are looking at everything that will help to bring him back," she said.

"There's extra photos out there now of William and they just want people everywhere to see his face, to know what he looks like and to just say and tell the police anything that they might know or any slightest bit of information that they have if they've seen him."

    When did he go missing?

William disappeared from the balcony of his grandmother's home in Benaroon Drive, Kendall, at 10:30am on September 12. Police said he disappeared in a five-minute window while he played with his sister.

The house where William was last seen is directly across the road from the Kendall State Forest. Kendall is about 35 kilometres south of Port Macquarie.
    What does he look like?

William has dark hair and hazel eyes. The three-year-old was last seen wearing a Spider-Man costume.
Who is searching and where have they searched?

Police, SES volunteers and members of the public have searched an area of more than 10 square kilometres, including bushland, dams and waterways.

    How did he disappear?

Police are treating the investigation as a search for a missing child, but have not ruled out the possibility of abduction.

Superintendent Fehon said the search had not yet become a recovery operation despite the boy having a diminished chance of survival.

"Our search and rescue coordinators, they are advising us [that] with expert medical survival information, with water, with food, the chance of survival would be much greater," he said.

"We don't know but whilst ever there's a possibility if young William is out there and he does have some water we'll continue to search for him whilst that survival state is still there."

Police divers have already searched dams and waterways, and searchers on trail bikes and horses have spent hours scouring scrub near the house where he disappeared.

Up to 300 people have been taking part in the search.

Police have said they cannot rule out the possibility the boy was abducted, and the ABC has been told police are also speaking with all known sex offenders in the region.

Police strike force Rossann has now been set up to investigate the disappearance.

Superintendent Fehon said 30 police investigators were consulting with the state crime squad.

"We are appealing for anyone who saw any people or vehicles in the vicinity of Benaroon Drive or in the Kendall township on Friday to contact police," he said.

"The search to locate William and his survival is definitely our priority, but we have an open mind and we are broadening our investigation teams at present.

"We just ask if there's any members of the public at all that know of anyone that was in the Kendall area or was visiting the Kendall area last Friday before 11:00am, any information at all, if they could contact CrimeStoppers 1800 333 000.

"We are after any lead whatsoever to try and find where young William is."

William's family has urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact police.

"The family want to extend a heartfelt thankyou to all of the police, the SES, every volunteer, every community member that has come together over the last few days to help with the search," a family friend told reporters yesterday.

    SES volunteers on grid search

He's almost as far north, minus a few hours drive, as NSW's most famous Little Boy Lost.

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boy_Lost_(song)

William's already been out a day longer now though. It's a damn shame NSW Police don't use black trackers anymore. Those guys knew the bush like no-one else.

ETA Some old Australian Country from 1960. It's not exactly the same kind of bush, but it'll give you an idea what this little guy's walking through - if he's out there.

Wow. Just five minutes and he was gone. It seems like it would be hard for him to get very far so quickly. Surely he isn't holed up somewhere in/under the house, maybe stuck somewhere?

Serious question, though. If the police brought in dogs to locate someone, would the dog be able to differentiate between the scent of the actual missing person and, say, a room in that person's house? I dunno how to word it. Like, say the kid was hiding in a closet in his parents' room. You bring the dog in the house, does it head for the kid or does it go to the kid's room?

Lol. In most of Australia that would actually be a possibility, but luckily for this kid, not in NSW, well, not since 1885 at least. Thanks to the Dingo Fence. I had a cousin who worked on it about 20 yrs ago. They have to cruise along in the middle of nowhere checking for holes. If you've seen the movie "Rabbit- Proof Fence", you've seen the Dingo Fence. It's 3355.404 miles long & was originally made to stop the bunny plague.

& don't forget to shut the gate.

    Ever

(seriously - anyone thinking of travelling down here. NEVER leave a gate open. It might look like the paddock's empty, but that's because it's 20,000 hectares & you can't see the 6000 head of sheep. Shut is always better than shot).

ETA derp. Forgot I posted this. Was reading another site & have been reminded there are still some wild up north (& pets everywhere that got snuck through as red cattles - my favourite doggies)

I alternate between thinking he was abducted and thinking he just got lost.

This sux. There's a vid of a family spokesperson being interviewed at this link. Sounds like right from the beginning the family were doubtful he would just wander off. I guess it was the best case scenario though. I don't know the Nth Coast real well so I'll have to see if there any major public entrances to the State Forest where he disappeared. If not, it makes the abduction look very opportunistic & probably a local.

    http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/more-inves...16-10hfbq.html

Sex crimes detectives have joined the investigation into the disappearance of three-year-old William Tyrell, who vanished from his NSW mid-north coast home last week in what police now fear may be an abduction. More than 30 investigators are working on the case and hundreds of people continued to scour the small town of Kendall and nearby bushland for a fifth day on Tuesday. Superintendent Paul Fehon said it remained unclear whether William, who was last seen wearing a Spider-Man suit, had wandered off of his own accord or whether something more sinister had occurred.

Strike Force Rossann has been formed to investigate the disappearance.*It's understood this includes the State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad and specially trained investigators who are experienced in the unexplained disappearances of young children. Advertisement The investigation has been widened to include the possibility that someone came in and out of the area. "We are appealing for anyone who saw any people or vehicles in the vicinity of Benaroon Drive or in the Kendall township on Friday to contact police," Superintendent Fehon said.

I guess they could've fucked up the search, but to find that kid faster in the New England ranges over half a century ago with nothing but a black tracker & locals searching on foot & horses - compared to all the resources they have now? Plus the fact he's in highly visible bright red & blue? It doesn't look good. That stretch of coast up the top of NSW & into QLD is starting to get a bigger history than Belangalo - & worse, none of them seem to be linked.

ETA I'm doing the same thing now Olivia. Everytime I look at how thick the bush is & how high the native grass is in there I change my mind again. If he crawled unded that grass to keep warm they might never find him.

'We can't find a scent': Police baffled that sniffer dogs can't find a trace of missing boy William Tyrell

There are hundreds of people on the ground who are searching for William, as well as resources on land and in the air, on horseback, trail bikes and 4WD and we still haven’t found him yet,' he added. Strike Force Rossann, based at Port Macquarie, was established on Tuesday and comprises of special investigators from Mid North Coast and Manning Great Lakes local area commands as well as personnel from State Crime Command and Forensic Services Group.

Ambulance Paramedics, fire fighters from Fire & Rescue NSW and Rural Fire Service volunteers, SES volunteers and community members from across NSW are also involved in the search after being moved by William's disappearance.

    <<snipped>>

He is a happy, cheeky, adventurous little boy who doesn’t wander off,' a friend speaking on behalf of William's parents, Nicole, told the Today show. 'William is pretty much always happy. He was happy to play in the garden and be with his family.' 'We don’t know of anyone who has had prior contact with William,' he said. 'He was playing in the backyard and running around the house with his sister. We are going to continue to comb the area trying to come up with something.' Police have interviewed William's little sister, but she did not know anything about what happened. 'She knows William is lost, she knows there is lots of people looking for him and she wants him back… she misses him,' Nicole said.

Not mum, this is a family friend doing the media appearances for the mum

Not sure how much weight to put on "no scent" given its the DM. Do they mean none at all, not even on the verandah where he was playing? Or do they mean noneentering the scrub or leading from the house? & if they mean none leading away, does that indicate he was carried by a person on foot or to a car? Or should there still be a scent regardless?

Also, I think a lot of people are assuming this is the parents. I did. It's not, no-one from the family has been seen by media. The woman is "Nicole", a family friend acting as spokesperson, the guy is John, I think he's a neighbour mentioned articles from down the road who was home when the first call went out & helped search with his dog the first day

This Nicole lady is creeping me out. She seems like she is loving the attention. Also, if it were my kid I would be begging and pleading everywhere.

Fears are growing that three-year-old William Tyrell may have been abducted, as it's revealed police are investigating reports that a man asked for directions to the street the toddler was playing on before he disappeared from the front yard of his grandparents' home six days ago.
A man asked staff in a local shop for directions to Benaroon Drive, in Kendall, on the mid north coast of NSW, on Friday before 10.30am when the toddler went missing, Fairfax Media reports.
The news comes as experts have advised police there is no possibility missing boy William Tyrell is still alive if he is lost in the bush.
Investigators have found no trace of the missing three-year-old six days after he was last seen on Friday wearing a Spiderman costume.

Yeah. I was getting that vibe too. I'm hoping all the shots & interviews were done within a short period of time & it's just giving us the wrong impression. There was an article that said he was living with his grandmother, not visiting? But then others say he wasn't from Kendall & wasn't a kid familiar with the bush. I can't find the first comment again thoiugh, so maybe it was bullshit & they amended the article.

I expect resources are a little stretched up north - have you seen the other case re the 2 missing brothers this week? I'm going to post it in a sec

William Tyrell could not survive six days in bush, police say
    Updated 33 minutes agoWed 17 Sep 2014, 12:48pm

    MAP: Kendall 2439

Police say they no longer believe it is possible a three-year-old boy could still be alive if he was lost in bushland on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

Three-year-old William Tyrell was last seen wearing a Spider-Man costume and playing with his sister last Friday morning at their grandmother's house at Kendall, south of Port Macquarie.

Since then hundreds of police, State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service (RFS) and members of the community have searched day and night for the child.

Superintendent Paul Fehon said if William did wander into the bush, he was unlikely to still be alive.

"The experts cannot substantiate that survival in the bush would be there at this point in time," he said.

But he said there was still no solid evidence that he did wander into the bush.

The house where William was last seen is directly across the road from the Kendall State Forest. Kendall is about 35 kilometres south of Port Macquarie,

Police are treating the investigation as a search for a missing child, but have not ruled out the possibility of abduction.

Specialist police, including the sex crimes squad, have been brought in to investigate the possibility the boy was abducted.

They have formed Strike Force Rosann and are continuing to canvass local residents, as well as examine possible sightings from all over the state.

Police said they were following a lead from shop owners in Kendall who have reported that someone was asking for directions to the street where William disappeared.

"We're grateful of all the information that's been provided to us at this point in time and we are following up on all those leads of information," Superintendent Fehon said.

"We need to go through that information, collate it, analyse it and we need to substantiate or discount that information that's provided to us.

"We're still open-minded in regards to what has happened to young William.

"As I've indicated, we have no indication whether young William is out in the bush or whether other forms of human intervention have been involved.

"So again, we're appealing to any member of the public that may have known of any person or any vehicle that was to be in the vicinity of Benaroo Drive at Kendall or the township of Kendall, if they can provide that to Crime Stoppers."

PHOTO: Missing three-year-old boy William Tyrell loved everything about Spider-Man. (NSW Police)
Police said they had no plans to scale back the search as yet.

Today the search area has been extended to a three-kilometre radius from the grandmother's house, while trail bikes and four-wheel drives will look beyond that area.

Police divers will continue to wade through local waterways after spending the past few days searching dams on nearby properties.

"As the search continues, of course the number of volunteers have diminished, but in regards to our resources that we have here we've continued with the numbers," Superintendent Fehon said.

"We will be looking at different facets of searching as I've indicated - trail bikes, four-wheel drives - as the ground search in this area is completed we will look at the broader area in the vicinity."
Someone no-one recognised asking for directions to William's grandma's street that same day is a little odd.

Here's a map showing how out of the way Kendall is. You'll find it just below the word "Hastings" which is in red. The map of NSW at the bottom will give you scale for the big Port Macquarie map at the top.

Police have widened their search for a three-year-old boy missing on the NSW mid-north coast to any unknown people who may have come into the tiny town of Kendall.

Five days after William Tyrell disappeared from the front yard of his grandparents' house on Benaroon Drive, police launched Strike Force Rosann on Tuesday and appealed to anyone who may have seen unknown people or vehicles in the area.

Fairfax Media believes that one line of inquiry is a man who asked staff in a local shop for directions to Benaroon Drive on Friday, before William went missing.

The boy was last seen at 10.30am wearing a Spiderman suit. His older sister, mother and grandmother had gone inside for a matter of minutes when he vanished.

Hundreds of SES, RFS and local volunteers scoured thick bushland on Tuesday and searched nearby dams and waterways for a second time; however, there has been no trace of the boy.

Sniffer dogs and cadaver dogs found no scent in the yard, fuelling fears he may have been abducted.

The Sex Crimes Squad and investigators with expertise in unexplained disappearances of young children joined a team of 30 investigators on Tuesday.

Police are examining possible sightings from as far away as Casino.

Superintendent Paul Fehon said it was "totally baffling that there's no lead at this time".

"We would have thought we would have had some indication of something," he said.

Shop owners on Kendall's main street said they had been told not to comment on a man who asked for directions to Benaroon Drive
    .

Family friend Nicole, speaking on behalf of William's parents, described William as a "happy, cheeky, adventurous" boy who "loved everything to do with Spider-Man", fire engines and police cars.

Nicole said William had not been known to wander away on his own before. His parents were "devastated", and his sister knew her brother was "lost", she said.

Janelle Nosworthy, owner of Miss Nellie's cafe, said community members were feeling "discouraged" as the search concluded with no results for a fifth day.

"It's a very close country town and it has really struck a chord; but people are getting a little bit discouraged now," she said.

If you use Port Macquarie to find Kendall, this map shows where the possible sighting was at Casino - way up north near the QLD border (366.7 km/227.856 miles)

It's been six days. He could be in the middle of Arnhem Land or Tasmania by now.

This page has locals & searchers posting

    - & assorted idiots mentioning blessed angles & suggestions such as searchers dressing in Spiderman costumes so that he feels safe approaching them (to be fair, we have had kids lost in the bush hide from searchers out of fear, but the image of a line search in Spiderman costume, even a lone Spiderman, is a little outlandish)

    https://m.facebook.com/MidNorthCoast...eline&filter=1

(there's also been comments that have had to be deleted, not sure what, but one news site had something along the lines of "why no mention of his life in Sydney & his father")

ETA just read they've even had a tracker out & still no sign so this is looking pretty grim.

Not certain it's Barry Port but his name was mentioned on one of the pages

Oh wow! A psychic! How incredibly unforseen ...

The only way she can be wrong is if he's in a body of water.

Hi Everyone, I've had a number of people contact me in regards to the little 3 year old boy who has gone missing - I don't in any way profess to be an expert in finding people or things, however the first thing I got when I heard he had gone missing is this:- I saw a little boy curled up on his side, but in a dark spot, under a bush, down a hole, in a cave possibly IN something, I'm not sure if there is anything he could be in near where his grandparents live. I then got the word 'well' not sure if that meant he was down a well or he is still well, when I saw him he was asleep. Lying on dirt, I think or what he is lying on is dirty. I'm sure the people looking have checked car boots etc. If anyone is able to pass this on, I hope it helps but again, it's not something that I believe excel at

Nope. It's ok. 2nd poster has now covered all possibilities

This story has been on my mind over and over, i can't stop looking for updates, i decided to a reading last night on him, all i get is water and circling around water. i dont know if its helpful i know police have searched everywhere, hope his alright

ETA this was a pretty useless post so here's the link to the NSW Police fb thread on this case

    Damn. They're scaling back.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-09-1...d-back/5751682

A search for a three-year-old boy who went missing from his grandmother's home on the New South Wales mid-north coast last week is to be scaled back.

Hundreds of people have spent days scouring bushland around the property at Kendall, south of Port Macquarie, looking for William Tyrell.

Police said the search would continue into its seventh day on Thursday but would be scaled back.

William was wearing a Spider-Man costume had had been playing with his sister when he vanished last Friday morning.

Police officers, State Emergency Service (SES), Rural Fire Service (RFS) and members of the community have searched day and night for him.

AUDIO: Police say they are baffled by the lack of clues. (The World Today)
Superintendent Paul Fehon said it was now a search rather than a rescue operation.

He said if William had wandered into the bush he was unlikely to still be alive.

There were 3 kids aged 4, 7 & 9 who made it 9 days in 1864 - in winter in Victoria. So it's not completely impossible, but they were kids who spent their time in the scrub alone often & William's only 3 with no older kid to help him.

In August 1864 the three Duff children, Jane, aged seven years, Isaac, nine and Frank, three, wandered from their home in the Victorian Wimmera and became lost in the bush. It was nine long days before they were found: they had survived after their initial picnic of damper and treacle, on a few quandong berries and by sucking the morning dew from leaves. Jane had taken off her dress to keep all of the children warm at night. After the first search by the children's father failed to find the children, other men joined the search. By the third day 30 men were searching and finally an Aboriginal man, Woorroral, an expert tracker was brought in to assist.

hw could have been taken in by a band of friendly wolves and is suckling from the mother wolf for sustenance. that's my guess anyway. it would explain why the dogs couldn't get his scent... wolf rider.

Damn. This is one of those situations it's hard to decide what you are hoping happened. I mean, if they are saying there is no way he is still alive if he is out in the brush, then my first thought is "I hope he was kidnaped then" because maybe if he was he could still be alive. But then I feel crazy for hoping a boy was kidnapped. The whole scenario just sucks. I guess the best thing to think happened is he was kidnapped by someone who wanted a child and they are taking good care of him. But then they see he is all over the news, panic, and drop him off somewhere where he will be found immediately. I know, not likely. Would be awesome though.

People were saying "why does he have a bruise!!" "hmm, a bruised eye" "Keisha 2.0" etc & she posted very early on (I think the first day when peoplle were pretty optimistic about finding him) to say it was a long time ago & happened at daycare - which would be easy enough for police to confirm.

He looks a lot chubbier & younger in the bruise pic. & he looks clean, happy & very well cared for in all the others, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. My son was totally not a rough & tumble kid & ended up with a black eye & stitches at 3 (tripped on a rug & went face first into a huge teak wall unit on our way out the door to preschool) so it can happen right in front of you no matter how well you supervise.

It's a bit of a worry seeing comments that the sniffer dogs didn't get called in until day 4 (monday) & it was only people posting in the threads that hunted down Barry Port's ph no & then found a group of NSW trackers when they found out Barry was away until wednesday (& he's from 1000's of kms away anyhow) so they couldn't have been there til Tues or Wed at the earliest - after 300 adults in "strong footwear" had already been stomping for 5 days all over any possible signs left by a little 3 yr old.

There was a comment that someone talked to an interstate truck driver at a servo who said he saw "a large woman acting suspiciously" by a car on the side of the road the first day. He reckoned he called 000 but they weren't interested because they were sure William just wandered off. I hope the guy's not in W.A or something now with no idea that now they do want reports of suspicious activity.

The guy asking for directions is definitely weird. If he visited someone in the street surely they'd have spoken up by now. The only other legitimate reason he could have for needing directions to William's nana's exact street is if there's a public entry to Kendall State Forest in the street. Otherwise you have to wonder if this was planned by someone with prior knowledge that William would be at his grandmother's address

    ETA found the mum's post

William TYRRELL is my son anyone with any information please contact the police! Regarding the black eye that was from a fall and he no longer has it as this is a daycare photo from weeks ago, and has nothing to do with the terrible situation as of now. Thank you everyone who has shared this. Like ? 56 ? Sep 12 at 7:37pm

Doesn't actually say it happened at daycare, just that the photo was taken there. It also says it's weeks old when I thought it must be much older, so ignore half of what I said up top.

ETA for anyone just reading now, the claim that sniffer dogs took 4 days to be called in was also complete & utter bullshit. They were there within 3 - 4 hrs & lost his scent at the front gate.

For the tiniest moment I thought it was good news. Maybe they talked to that truck driver afterall.

    Search expanded

THE search for missing William Tyrell has been expanded to cover an even greater*area as it*enters the seventh day.

Hundreds of SES, RFS, police and civilian volunteers have set out for a seventh day of searching for William Tyrell, who was last seen playing in the front yard of his grandmother's home in Kendall wearing a Spider-Man suit.

Police said Middle Brother State Forest and surrounds will be searched from Thursday morning. The focus of the search since William went missing last Friday morning has been the Kendall State Forest and the area around Benaroon Drive.

Superintendent Paul Fehon said the State Emergency Service's volunteers will walk the forest's trails as they search for part of a vehicle that may have become detached.*

Teams of emergency services began the first of a two-day search of roadsides ‘‘in case something has been thrown’’, said NSW Police Rescue Sergeant John King.

‘‘It will be a sweep search of the side of the road,’’ he told volunteers at a briefing in Kendall on Thursday.

Sgt King told volunteers not to give up hope.

‘‘We look at those statistics and this is a stand-alone case, so we still hold promise and we are going to continue with that attitude,’’ Sgt King said.

Middle Brother's closest town is Rossglen I think. It's not really as close to Kendall as it looks here but I can't copy a better map.

Basically, if you were heading to Kendall from Sydney, you'd pass the turn off for Middle Brother on your way up.

Google Earth will give you a much better idea if you can be bothered looking. Just follow the Pacific Hwy up from Middle Brother, but zoom because Kendall is seriously tiny.

    What are the chances

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ive-fades.html

Police say bushland surrounding the grandmother's home has now been thoroughly searched, with no sign of William found. The three-year-old vanished without a trace from the garden at his grandmother’s house last Friday where he had been playing with his sister. His grandmother and mother went inside the home at about 10.30am and within five minute he was gone.

Neighbours say William, his sister and mother had only arrived in town the day before. William's grandmother is an active and well-liked member of the tight-knit Kendall community and had recently been in hospital. His grandfather died earlier this year and his grandmother needed someone to care for her in the house, so William's family had travelled from their home in Sydney to stay with her
    From the same article

Police have scanned CCTV footage from local businesses, searched neighbours' properties and questioned locals, in some cases covering the same ground more than 10 times. But no one has found a trace and police dogs failed to even locate a scent of the missing three-year-old. Police are still investigating a number of tips, including reports that a 'well-dressed, well-spoken' man stopped at a local shop on Friday morning to ask directions to Batar Creek Road, which leads to Benaroon Drive where William was last seen. But there have been plenty of false leads.

The Australian reports that Family and Community Services have also been called into the investigation as police admitted the only hope they hold for William being alive is if he had been abducted. On Tuesday, a crew of volunteers came across a patch of blood near a creek just over 2km from William's grandmother's house. Searchers were sent away and a forensics truck arrived to investigate, but test results showed it was not human blood. Bush trackers have found clues such as a knife sheath and a set of small footprints but police have investigated all tip-offs from bush searches and still don't have a solid lead.
FACS are our child protection agency.

    & also

Police and NSW State Emergency Service crews will conduct a 'more evidence-based search' in the Middle Brother State Forest, about five kilometers from where William was last seen. 'We understand William wouldn't have walked that far but with assistance he could have been taken there,' SES liaison officer Tim Richards told search crews on Thursday.

Authorities say that if William became lost alone in the bush he is unlikely to still be alive. Teams of officers in cars and on foot will scour roads in the 48 square-kilometre forest looking for items that may have been discarded from a vehicle, such as clothes or other clues to what happened to the boy
(sorry the article's all over the place, having major copypasta dramas)
