Heather Mack (19) and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer (21) allegedly murdered Heather's mother while on vacation in Bali

    http://mydeathspace.com/article/2014...cation_in_Bali

An American tourist's battered body has been found in a suitcase at an exclusive hotel on Indonesia's resort island of Bali and her daughter and daughter's boyfriend have been arrested over the killing, police said Wednesday.

The body of Sheila von Wiese Mack was found Tuesday stuffed into a suitcase in the boot of a taxi in front of the five-star St. Regis hotel in the upscale Nusa Dua resort area of Bali.

The 62-year-old victim was half naked, had several wounds to her head, and appeared to have put up a struggle, a doctor said.

She had been staying in the hotel with her daughter, Heather, 19, and her daughter's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, local police chief Djoko Hari Utomo told reporters.

Mack and her daughter stayed in the hotel together for several days before the boyfriend joined them on Monday, Utomo said. Mack was recorded on CCTV arguing with Schaefer in the hotel lobby the same night, he said.

The next day, the couple were checking out and sent several suitcases down to a taxi, allegedly including the one that contained the victim.

The body was discovered when the couple failed to show up at the waiting taxi, Utomo said. They were seen on CCTV leaving the hotel via a stretch of beach at the back of the property, instead of the main entrance.

Police launched a hunt and the pair were found sleeping at a hotel in the tourist area of Legian, north of Nusa Dua, early Wednesday, Utomo told AFP.

"This is murder, and we will decide from our investigation whether it is premeditated or spontaneous," he said.

The victim's body was sent to the main hospital in the Balinese capital Denpasar for an autopsy. A doctor there said it had several wounds to the head, which appeared to have been inflicted with "blunt tools".

"Looking at the wounds, the victim must have fought back," said Ida Bagus Alit, adding that one of her fingers on her left hand was broken.

The hotel said that it was aware of the "terrible tragedy" and was assisting authorities in their investigation.

The US embassy in Jakarta said in a statement that it was "aware of the death of an American citizen that took place in Bali and we understand that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case".

The beachfront St. Regis is one of the most exclusive hotels in Bali with rooms starting at $470 a night and a 24-hour butler service, according to its website.

Chicago widow Sheila von Wiese-Mack had traded in her Starwood travel points to go on vacation halfway around the world to the posh and popular St. Regis Bali Resort in Indonesia. She took her 19-year-old daughter, Heather, as she had on every getaway, friends said.

But the pair had their tempestuous moments, and those same friends begged von Wiese-Mack not to travel with her daughter this time.

“She overindulged the child,” Mark Bacharach, a close friend for a quarter-century, told NBC News.

The mother and daughter arrived Saturday for their 10-day-plus trip. On Tuesday, von Wiese-Mack’s half-naked body was found stuffed inside of a suitcase that had been left in the trunk of a taxi parked in front of the hotel, police said Wednesday

Now, Heather Mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, who checked into the hotel Monday, have been detained in the grisly murder. No charges have been filed.

Von Wiese-Mack, 62, didn’t hide the rocky relationship she had with her only child, and friends say she struggled as a single mom after her husband died in 2006. She had appreciated her late husband’s love of music and the arts. James L. Mack was a composer and producer who worked with well-known jazz musicians and symphonies both in Chicago and internationally.

The family had lived in the affluent Chicago suburb of Oak Park, but von Wiese-Mack only recently moved to a high-rise condo in the city after taking a financial hit from the real estate market in 2008, reported NBC Chicago. Von Wiese-Mack continued to patronize the arts and had amassed degrees in business and social work.

In 2013, she was featured in a newsletter of a local bibliophilic society called the Claxton Club. She spoke about how she had once majored in political science at Simmons College in Boston and worked for Sen. Ted Kennedy.

“He had me doing research for him, and lots of miscellaneous jobs the political life requires,” von Wiese-Mack told the Claxtonian. “I even poured tea for Rose Kennedy a time or two."

    <<snipped>>

Before leaving for Bali, the mother and daughter had been fighting. Heather Mack had dropped out of college, moved out of the house and was living in a hotel, von Wiese-Mack told her friends. She managed to track the teen down, but barely recognized her anymore, Bacharach said.

“She tried to hope when it came [to Heather],” he added. “That was my friend’s most outstanding characteristic.”

CCTV footage showed von Wiese-Mack in an argument with Schaefer in the lobby of the St. Regis on the day he checked into the hotel, said local police Col. Djoko Hari Utomo, according to The Associated Press.

Heather Mack and Schaefer were arrested Wednesday morning after they were found at a hotel about 6 miles away from the St. Regis. Both were being questioned but were refusing to talk until being joined by attorneys, Utomo said.

Jail in Bali is going to be quite a reality shock for these two. She's a foreigner and she murdered her own mother. That's going to go down real well

Some shots of Kerobokan, a prison most Australians know well because we have so many stupid kids end up there

Jakarta: Bali police have revealed gruesome details of the murder of an American woman who was bludgeoned to death, then had her body stuffed into a suitcase and loaded into a taxi. They have also questioned why a Bali taxi driver waited for an hour outside the woman?s hotel before checking the suitcase in the boot of his car, as blood dripped out of it and soaked the hotel bed sheet it was wrapped in.

The dead woman is Sheila Von Wiese Mack, 62, of Chicago. Her daughter, student Heather Mack, 19, and daughter?s boyfriend Tommy Shaeffer, 21, were transferred at 2am on Thursday, local time, from the South Kuta police station to the Denpasar police lockup. They will be questioned for ?deliberately causing someone?s death? which, in Bali, carries a 15-year sentence.

Heather Mack was laughing and joking as she was led from one room to another the police lockup on Thursday, smiling and saying "Britney Spears" at one point, and later, "Oh my God" as she laughed, apparently at the media attention.

Denpasar police chief Djoko Hariutomo told Fairfax Media that Mrs Mack and her daughter had arrived in Bali and checked into the St Regis luxury resort on August 4. Mr Schaeffer had joined them on August 11. On Tuesday morning - the day of the death - police say the group had publicly argued over who would pay the hotel bill. Mrs Mack was heard saying she had paid for Mr Schaeffer?s flights to Bali, so the couple should pay for the hotel.

Tommy Schaefer is brought to a police station for questioning about the death of his girlfriend's mother. Photo: AP Hotel CCTV footage then shows that at 11.26am on Tuesday, the young couple came into the hotel?s reception area carrying a large suitcase wrapped in a hotel bedsheet. They were booked to leave on Thursday, but asked to check out immediately, Mr Djoko said. They refused to let the hotel staff handle the suitcase, instead taking it straight to a taxi they had pre-ordered, and loading it themselves into the boot.

Mr Djoko said the couple then told reception staff that they would not pay the bill because Heather?s mother would pay when she checked out later. They also demanded that hotel staff open a safety deposit box at reception and give them the contents. The staff refused both requests. Mr Djoko said Mrs Mack had left clear instructions that only she should be able to open the safe, which staff believed contained her jewellery.

After the argument, the couple went back into the hotel, saying they needed to get more bags. But they did not return. Instead the couple slipped out the back entrance, then around to the side and ordered another taxi. They went directly to Ngurah Rai airport and the immigration counter, saying they had lost their passports and needed new ones to fly out. Mr Djoko speculated that their passports were also locked inside the safety deposit box at the hotel. But immigration staff told them they would need to report the loss to the US consulate.

The suitcase displayed at a police station in Nusa Dua, Bali. Photo: AFP From there the couple took another taxi to the hotel Risata, near the airport.* Meanwhile, after about an hour, the taxi driver, tired of waiting, tried to unload the suitcase from his car. He saw the blood soaking the sheet wrapping the suitcase, so he and the hotel staff went looking for the couple. Only after they could not find them did they go to police station, arriving at about 1.45pm.

Police opened the suitcase and found the body of Mrs Mack stuffed inside. The blood was coming from a number of wounds to her head, which Mr Djoko says were caused by blunt force trauma. They do not yet have a murder weapon, but suspect that broken glass in Mrs Mack?s room, number 616, suggests it was a heavy glass object. Mr Djoko says CCTV footage shows no people other than Mrs Mack, her daughter and Mr Schaeffer, entering the room. Mr Djoko said hotel gardeners also found three suitcases full of the family?s belongings hidden in the garden. When they opened the suitcases they found a number of blood-soaked hotel towels that had apparently been used to try to clean up the blood in the room.

Police put out an alert to all taxis and hotels. Staff from the Risata hotel responded and, at 8.30pm on Tuesday night, police raided the room in which they found Ms Mack and Mr Schaeffer asleep. CNN reported that the couple told police they had been taken captive at the resort by an armed gang whose members killed Mrs Mack, but that they had managed to escape. Heather Mack and Mr Schaeffer were officially named suspects on Thursday based on the CCTV evidence from the hotel, but Mr Djoko said police had still been unable to question the pair as lawyers were arranged.

"We have done several tests - blood and urine tests, a psychological test and we will conduct physical tests too," he said. Of the suspects' initial statement that they had been kidnapped by six gangsters, Mr Djoko said: "That is inconsistent with the facts we found at the scene". The couple have so far refused further questioning without a lawyer, Mr Djoko said. They had refused to be accompanied by the duty solicitor, but are waiting for their own lawyer in Chicago to appoint a local representative.

The Chicago Tribune reports that police from where they lived in Chicago had confirmed that they were frequently called to the home where the Mack mother and daughter lived. "Between January 2004 and today, officers had been called to that residence 86 times," said David Powers, spokesman for the village of Oak Park. "The last call was in June 2013, and they basically said they were a wide range of calls, mostly for domestic trouble and theft. There were several missing person calls, and a few 911 [emergency call] hang-ups that police responded to." After Mrs Mack's husband, James Mack, died in 2006, the mother and daughter continued the family tradition of taking exotic family vacations, the newspaper reported, "maybe trying to make it work", according to a neighbour.* "Since her dad died, it was ongoing," said the neighbour. "Your typical teenage stuff would blow up into major, major stuff.?

Laughing & joking? This kid has no idea the hell that awaits her.

Tommy recently lost the love of his life. In April, Tommy’s long-time girlfriend, Rachel Smylie, passed away in a car accident in Cape Town, South Africa.
'I guess Tommy and Heather started dating after Rachel’s death and I’m saddened that he got caught up in Heather’s insanity. Sheila was an incredibly nice, educated woman.
'She was always dressed to the 9s, even while running errands. If I close my eyes and try to visualise her, an image of Sheila wearing a fur coat and stiletto heels while shopping at the local Jewel-Osco comes to mind.'

This kid is in for such a rude awakening. Wow.

ETA I should add that Bali courts are very big on contrition. The only way to get even a slight sentence reduction - like life in a rat-infested hellhole rather than death, is to throw yourself on the mercy of the court, express your shame, beg forgiveness & promise to lead a dutiful life forever after. When the court sees her behavior she is screwed, no matter what spin her Bali lawyer tries to put on it.

    Silly, silly arrogant little girl.

ETA why does spell check change to & two to too. Agggggghhhhh

I'm not buying this "eptopic pregnancy" story, not one bit. Spoiled little bitch is probably finally seeing what her future has in store, and is desperately trying to get back to the US.

The pregnant teenager accused, along with her boyfriend, of the gruesome murder of her socialite mother has complained about the couple's 'racist' treatment after they were given KFC chicken in jail.

It is believed that Mr Schaefer was particularly angry with the offering as he suggested KFC was a meal for the lower echelons of society, newscom.au reports.
Police were taken aback by the allegation, claiming that in Bali KFC is expensive for the average income earner and not at all for the lower wage earners.
Djoko Hari Utomo, chief of police for the Balinese capital, Denpasar, said: 'Heather complains about the food and that she is not being well-treated in jail, nevertheless police treat the prisoners all the same.'

Countering the couple's bizarre claim, he added: 'We have already given treatment that is more than normal. We give special attention to her as she is still young. This is a transition period for her.'

So apparently she really is pregnant. I was hoping not, mainly because of this:

Wiyanto said ultrasound and urine tests had confirmed that Mack was pregnant, as she had said. Authorities had earlier suggested her pregnancy might have been a ruse to ensure she was sent home.
'... In Indonesia there are a lot of cases of pregnant prisoners, if they are already processed through the courts and they are jailed,' he said.
'So if found guilty, the baby will be born in prison. The baby could grow up in prison with its mother.'

I'm guessing this was just a spur of the moment rage killing, but it looks like there was still money from her father's estate floating around.

Also, it looks like she wasn't dead when they put her in the suitcase. She suffocated. :(

    http://riverforest.suntimes.com/2014...ne-settlement/

The estate left behind eight years ago by James L. Mack, whose wife was found stuffed in a suitcase in Bali last week, didn?t amount to much ? at first.

Mack left behind a $150,000 Chicago condo and a bank account worth about $1,800 when he died in 2006, according to court records filed by his now-deceased widow, Sheila von Wiese-Mack.

The windfall came about five years later, when a Cook County judge in February 2011 approved a $1.5 million settlement in a decade-old lawsuit between the couple and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

They sued the cruise line before Mack, a highly regarded jazz and classical composer, died at age 76.

Sheila von Wiese-Mack immediately netted $340,667 after legal fees for her share of the settlement, according to court records.

But another $500,000 went to James Mack?s estate.

James Mack signed his will five days before his death, records show. And in it, he said it was intended ?only to provide for Heather Mack, my child, and for no other children.? At the time, Mack was age 10.

But in June 2011, a judge authorized von Wiese-Mack, the executor of her husband?s estate, to pay herself the remaining $500,000 as the estate?s ?sole beneficiary.?

Now, three years later, 18-year-old Heather Mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer are in the custody of Indonesian authorities after von Wiese-Mack?s body was found last week on the resort island of Bali.

She was stuffed in a suitcase in the trunk of a taxi parked outside the upscale St. Regis Bali Resort, where von Wiese-Mack, her daughter and Schaefer had been staying.

Schaefer and Heather Mack could be charged with premeditated murder, which could carry the death penalty.

An autopsy found von Wiese-Mack, 62, died of asphyxiation from a broken nose bone resulting from a blunt blow, authorities said. She also had a broken neck.
Her body is expected to be returned to the United States.

It?s not clear how ? or if ? the settlement with Royal Caribbean Cruises affected the undisputedly contentious relationship between von Wiese-Mack and her daughter, Heather Mack.

The two allegedly quarreled often at their Oak Park home over homework, chores ? and the mother?s accusations that her daughter stole cash and credit cards, according to police reports.

Records indicate the Royal Caribbean lawsuit, filed in 2001, revolved around a swimming pool injury to James Mack?s foot as well as alleged negligent medical treatment by a physician on a cruise ship.

Heather Mack?s attorney, Michael Elkin, declined to comment on the settlement. The attorneys who handled the lawsuit and James Mack?s estate didn?t return calls.

A second executor named in James Mack?s will ? von Wiese-Mack?s brother, William Wiese ? would only issue a written statement that said his family is ?saddened and heartbroken.?

?We would also like to thank the Indonesian police, the FBI, the U.S. State Department and all the other people who are assisting in the quest for justice for our sister, Sheila,? Wiese wrote.

Two years after the settlement, a pair of banks released outstanding mortgages totaling $384,000 on the upscale Oak Park home von Wiese-Mack shared with her daughter. The mortgages were taken out in 2005 and 2006, before James Mack died.

Oak Park police said they made 86 visits to that home since January 2004, often to deal with what neighbors described as constant screaming matches between von Wiese-Mack and Heather Mack.

Von Wiese-Mack repeatedly accused her daughter of abusing her, according to police reports obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times. She said Heather Mack bit her and punched her in a previously broken ankle. And Heather Mack was arrested after allegedly breaking her mother?s arm in January 2011.

Von Wiese-Mack eventually sold the Oak Park home last year for $650,000, Cook County records show, and moved to a Chicago high-rise.

But just last month, police found Heather Mack and Schaefer partying with seven other people in an eighth-floor room at the Conrad Chicago Hotel on Rush Street, a law enforcement source said.

Von Wiese-Mack?s credit card company told her the card was being used to pay for the room.

Heather Mack told police she had permission to use her mother?s credit card.

    Von Wiese-Mack denied it.
