I can't stop thinking about it either. Because it was so unnecessary. 298 innocent people that had nothing to do with it die in a war that they weren't fighting. That's why regardless of who the hell pulled the trigger, I blame both countries. I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing about the various wars going on day in and day out. If I were smart, I'd stay off the internet today. All of this crap is making me seriously depressed.

I rarely post on this site, but some of details which are emerging now are horrific.

From the BBCs live update feed (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-28360784):

14:36: Residents of the Ukrainian village of Rassypnoye, where parts of the Malaysian airliner came down, have described seeing "people falling from the sky". One of them, Nikolai, told Reuters: "It was about 17:00. There was a very strong plane rumble, then there was a sort of explosion or flap, and then people started falling from the sky. People were appearing right from the clouds. Then the plane's fuselage appeared and landed there, 50m away from here."
At cruise altitude, people would have had their seatbelts off, and going from the quote above, it seems the plane disintegrated quite high up - rather than being pierced and crashing.

I've taken this route myself in the past, so I guess it's hitting close to home.

Yeah ... damn those Ukrainians. How dare they try to maintain their independence from Russia. They should just roll over and let the Russians take over again ... ya know, since it worked out so well for them the first time, what with all the genocide, ethnic cleansing, mass deportations, people purposely starved to death, etc.

Sorry, but you don't seem to have a very firm grasp on what's going on over there (or the history).

Millions of innocent Ukrainians have been killed by the Russians over the years.

And ... YES, it DOES matter who pulled the trigger.

    MH17 Took Abandoned Flight Path
    Updated: 6:49 pm, Friday, 18 July 2014

The Malaysian airliner apparently shot down over rebel-held eastern Ukraine was flying over airspace that a number of other Asian carriers and Australia's Qantas abandoned months ago because of security concerns.

South Korea's two main airlines, Korean Air and Asiana, as well as Qantas and Taiwan's China Airlines said they had all re-routed flights from as early as the beginning of March when Russian troops moved into Crimea.

'We stopped flying over Ukraine because of safety concerns,' Asiana spokeswoman Lee Hyo-min said.

Korean Air re-routed its flights 250 kilometres south of Ukraine from March 3 'due to the political unrest in the region', an official for the carrier told AFP.

A Qantas spokeswoman said its London to Dubai service used to fly over Ukraine, but the route was changed 'several months ago', while Taiwan's China Airlines diverted its flights from April 3.

Quizzed as to why Malaysia Airlines had not taken similar precautions, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said international air authorities had deemed the flight path secure.

'The aircraft's flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organization. And (the) International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions,' he said.

Re-routing would have involved a longer flight-time and therefore higher fuel costs.

Singapore Airlines said in a statement that it had been using Ukrainian airspace, but had 're-routed all our flights' to alternative corridors away from the region.

It was not immediately clear when the route change was put into affect.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific said it had not been using Ukrainian airspace 'for quite some time'.

According to the European flight safety body Eurocontrol, the Ukrainian authorities declared the east of the country a no-fly zone shortly after the Malaysian airliner went down with 298 people on board.

European and US airlines rerouted their flights as Kiev said flight MH17 was shot down in a 'terrorist' attack and a US official said intelligence analysts 'strongly believe' it was downed by a surface-to-air missile.

'Since the crash, the Ukrainian authorities have informed Eurocontrol of the closure of routes from the ground to unlimited (altitude) in Eastern Ukraine,' Eurocontrol said in a statement.

'All flight plans that are filed using these routes are now being rejected by Eurocontrol. The routes will remain closed until further notice,' it added.

According to Eurocontrol's information, the doomed plane was flying at a level known as '330', or approximately 10,000 metres or 33,000 feet, when it disappeared from radar screens.

The route itself had been closed to level '320', but was cleared for those flying at the Malaysian plane's altitude.

Thai Airways said it had started re-routing flights away from Ukraine from Friday as a direct result of the crash.

'Some of our flights used to pass through Ukrainian airspace ... but as of today all of our flights are totally avoiding Ukrainian airspace,' a Thai Airways spokeswoman said.

Air China and China Eastern Airways had a total of 28 flights a week passing over eastern Ukraine, but China's Civil Aviation Administration said on Friday it had ordered all carriers to circumvent the region.

Vietnam Airlines said it had suspended four long-haul flights to Europe in the immediate aftermath of the Malaysia Airlines incident.

The flights resumed on Friday, but on re-drawn routes that 'completely avoid' eastern Ukraine, the airline said.

Other Asian carriers such as Indonesia's Garuda, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways said their routes had never crossed Ukraine.

Meanwhile Malaysia Airlines says it has now changed the route its planes will take on flights to and from Europe.

The airline said in a statement on its website that all of its European flights 'will be taking alternative routes avoiding the usual route'.

'The usual flight route was earlier declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation' the statement reads.

'International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions.'

Even though there were no restrictions, Malaysia Airlines may still face questions about why it continued with flight paths over eastern Ukraine - at the heart of a violent rebellion against Kiev - when some airlines decided months ago to change routes to skip around the area.

This one is a little more accurate

Roger Guard was travelling with his wife Jill Guard onboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 when it was shot down over Ukraine.
Officials initially reported nine Queenslanders were among the almost 300 people who died in the crash. The figure has been revised to seven.

    Helena Sidelik

The other Queensland victims are Helena Sidelik, from Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, who was returning from a European holiday and Albany Creek couple Howard and Susan Horder who were on holidays, mainly in Ireland.

The Guards were also returning home from an overseas holiday aboard MH17.
Roger, a pathologist of 44 years, was due to return to work on Monday.

Roger and Jill Guard's children Paul Guard and Amanda Koopman said on Friday evening the loss of their parents was devastating.

"Mum is the best grandma in the world and she was really looking forward to seeing Ella walk for the first time tonight," Amanda said holding back tears.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it appeared Russian-backed rebels were responsible for shooting down the commercial flight over eastern Ukraine and was strongly critical of "the bullying of small countries by big ones".

Reddit conspiracy threads - always the place to go for major incidents. So many eyes. So many screenshots.

A Spanish air controller working in Kiev wrote on Twitter that the plane was escorted by two Ukrainian fighter Jets minutes before the crash.

Twitter account from spanish air traffic controller working in Ukraine, reported 2 fighter jets near MH17. Account is down now.
Anyone has more screenshots? Here is one.

Anyone able to verify the interpretation?

Figured I'd just throw this in here
"Soon above Ruin(I guess some derogatory name for Ukraine - "Ukraina" is Russian for Ukraine and "Ruina" is Russian for a ruin) an airliner stuffed full of euro-tourists will be shot down. This will be the reason for official NATO invitation. That's the way I see it"
    Posted exactly a month ago.
My Russian isn't that good but I think I got the translation about right there (feel free to correct).

    Flight path deviation

    [?]Username3636 23 points 15 hours ago*
I will only mention the most important information he?s said, and in order, i took in account the time they were sent and stated it if i though it was important, it was done very quickly im sorry if i make some grammar errors:
The planes crashes (sent 8 hours ago)
Kiev authorities are trying to make it look like it was done by rebels.
It might have been taken down (sent 8 hours ago)
He mentions military personnel from Kiev got to the control tower and there?s foreign people with them.
He says two fighter jets escorted the plane until three minutes before it disappearead.
As soon as the plane disappeared the military personnel informed the people on the control tower that it was taken down, then he says it took hem seven minutes after it disappeared.
It was recorded on the radars that it was taken down by Kiev, they know it and the miitary personnel know it.
The military personnel are saying it was done by someone in the army they dont know whom, but certainly it wasnt pro-russian.
The minister of interior knew what the jets were doing there but the defense minister didnt.
The military personnel (MP from here on) confirm it was shot down by ukraine, but dont know where the order came from.
He says he mentioned in previous tweets that some MP are against the actual ukranian president.
Militar control officially confirms it was shot down (sent 3 hours ago).
He says the official reports doesnt mention where the missile came from but it wasnt from autodefense on rebel areas.
The high commanders are saying it came from the army but dont know where the order came from.
The MP at the orders of the minister of interior knew everything that was going on at any time.
The MP confirm it was taken down by ukraine.
Some MPs knew everything about what was going on, some didnt.
The way the MPs took control of the command tower minutes after it happened and them knowing all the detais made us think it was them.
The "what have you done?" face of the MPs that arrived later didnt leave any doubt.
The MPs that are accompanied by foreign people are asking the people in the control tower to tell their version.
Our response was this radars dont pick up on missil signals, but military do, there isnt any doubt left.
The military report states where the missile came from, which is false.
If theres something new i will translate it. I know some thing dont make sense because of the chronology but i just translated what he said
Edit 1 : Some formatting. Edit 2: More formatting, corrected some gramatical errors and changed interior minister to minister of interior.
Edit 3: apparently i cant see his tweets now or follow him, does someone have access?

[?]bearju 26 points 18 hours ago
This is good info. All the previous flights between the same destinations took a different route. Flight MH17 was the only one in the past week to fly over the Ukraine/Russia Border. All the other flights went through the Sea. Interesting.
    http://flightaware.com/live/flight/M...000Z/EHAM/WMKK
The other image is from another flight tracking site that says the flight was canceled:
    http://www.flightradar24.com/flight/mh17 -screenshot if link isn't working http://i.imgur.com/yz6e071.png

ETA in case some people don't follow the links, "Carlos'" Twitter account was hastily disappeared when comments were made questioning his identity & asking how it was that a Spanish national was working in the tower when only Ukrainian nationals are employed in those positions.

And ... YES, it DOES matter who pulled the trigger.
Russia took over Crimea (Southern Ukraine) immediately after the Moscow Olympics. Then they started on the eastern Ukraine border. They claim there are ethnic Russians in the area who want to be part of Russia.

It's those ethnic Russians who have been shooting down Ukraine's military aircraft, and shot down the Malaysian airliner.

Obama's saying now that the separatists had to have military training to use the weapons that shot down the planes. He blames Putin.

At least one U.S. citizen was killed aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, President Barack Obama revealed today.
Quinn Lucas Schansman, a dual U.S. and Dutch citizen, was on his way to meet family members who were vacationing in Malaysia when his plane was hit by a Russian-made surface-to-air missile.
His Facebook page shows that he studied at international business at Hogeschool van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) and also lived in the Dutch capital.
After news of his death broke, in girlfriend, Floor van Dranen posted a touching picture of the couple lovingly kissing. Condolences poured in for the young business school graduate.

In an incomprehensible twist of fate, a Queensland woman who lost her brother in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 discovered on Friday that her stepdaughter was on the plane shot down over Ukraine.

Kaylene Mann's brother Rod Burrows and sister-in-law Mary Burrows were on board flight MH370 when it vanished in March.

On Friday, Ms Mann found out that her stepdaughter, Marie Rizk, was killed along with 297 other passengers on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which U.S. intelligence authorities believe was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Ukraine government advisor Anton Gerashchenko today released a horrific image of a dead baby lying in field (bottom right image) that he said was a victim of flight MH17. He said: "I was thinking for a long time if I should publish this picture. In the end I decided to do so. I want the whole world to see where appeasing an aggressor led us. We don't know this baby's name or nationality - perhaps from Netherlands, Malaysia or the USA. No-one would be able to imagine the horror this baby felt falling several kilometres. We can only hope that he or she was sleeping in the mother's arms and didn't wake up until dying from the crash. This baby's death is on your conscience - Putin, and on the conscience of the terrorists you nurtured that are now stomping over our - until very recently - peaceful land. Damn you for centuries! Meanwhile President Obama said the plane was shot down by Russian rebels 'under Putin's control'. He said no further sanctions would be imposed until after a full investigation. Meanwhile the grim hunt for bodies continued at the scene - as evidence also emerged that a Russian missile launcher was smuggled into and out of separatist territory just before and after the tragedy.

Ummmmm. Yeah. I'm not too keen on a country using a dead baby to further their cause. That's SUPER shitty to do.

Obama's saying now that the separatists had to have military training to use the weapons that shot down the planes. He blames Putin.

Yes, I'm aware of the Crimea situation. And yes, the Russians have been both arming and training the ethnic Russian rebels. Russia gave the rebels the anti-aircraft weapon.

I blame Putin, too. He's a dangerous man. It's a terrible situation for the 83 percent of the Ukrainian population who are not ethnic Russians.

No. What I'm saying is that I'm well aware of what is going on over there, but rather than derail a thread debating the history of the former Soviet Union and the current state of the independent nations that sprang from it, I am choosing to discuss what the thread is about. A civilian plane shot down during a war killing almost 300 innocent people. And the last time I checked, most wars require at least two to tango. So I do blame both countries involved in the WAR responsible for killing these people. And I don't think most families give a rat's ass regarding the blame game going on. Just that their loved ones are gone for no good reason of theirs.

If you want to debate who is right or wrong in this particular war, start a thread on it.

See, that's where I'm different. I refrain from personal insults unlike some people. No mud on my side.

What 2 countries? If anything, it's a civil war with Russia supplying the rebels. What the hell were they doing with a missile that could shoot down a plane from over 30,000 feet! Why didn't MH17 make a detour over the war zone, like everyone else, including the previous MH17?

Sorry BB, you don't know what's going on. This is a Current Events thread. Yes, there are 298 innocent victims, but this crash can have global implications.

TH - I was just expanding on your thought, not disagreeing.

In my opinion, Russia is very much involved. And using the rebels to their advantage. If it was Russian rebels, using Russian arms that they were trained to use by the Russians? I would say that two countries are involved here.

IMO....and this is just my 2 cents....I think the Russian soldiers that fired the missile were like BEVIS and butthead almost. "hee hee let's fire this thing and make it go boom. Uh oh. We fucked up."

12 hours later Bevis and Butthead have bullets in their heads for doing something stupid.

    That's just my 2

    I'm probably stupid
