    Oh Florida...

How can one state provide us with so many fucked up, wacked out, interesting, shit-can't-be-true, how-is-this-state-still-here stories? Well, Florida does. Regularly. Let's discuss here!

Judge Threatens, Allegedly Attacks Public Defender During Hearing

A judge in Brevard County, Fla. allegedly attacked a public defender in a hallway outside a courtroom after threatening him— "I'll beat your ass"—during a hearing.

A camera in the courtroom captured Judge John Murphy challenging public defender Andrew Weinstock on Monday after Weinstock refused to waive his client's right to a speedy trial.

"You know, if I had a rock I would throw it at you right now," Murphy told Weinstock. "Stop pissing me off. Just sit down."

"You know I'm the public defender. I have a right to be here and I have a right to stand and represent my client," Weinstock replied.

Murphy then asked Weinstock if he wanted to step out to the courtroom's hallway, where there are no cameras. "If you want to fight, let's go out back and I'll just beat your ass," he said.

The two left the courtroom together, and, in the video, you can hear as they angrily confront each other in the hallway.

    From WFTV:

Weinstock's supervisor told Channel 9 Weinstock thought they would just talk out the problem, but he said there were no words exchanged, just blows thrown by Murphy.

"The attorney said that immediately upon entering the hallway he was grabbed by the collar and began to be struck," said Blaise Trettis, public defender of the 18th Judicial Court. "There was no discussion, no talk, not even time for anything. Just as soon as they're in the hallway, the attorney was grabbed."
Two deputies broke up the fight and Murphy returned to the courtroom. "I will catch my breath eventually," Murphy said. "Man, I'm an old man."

No charges are expected to be filed against Murphy, though the public defender's office plans to report the fight to the Florida Bar Association.

A Florida woman was arrested early Saturday for battering her live-in boyfriend after he refused to ?cuddle? with her when they went to bed, police report.

Shavonna Rumph, 31, and Henry Price, 33, ?had been drinking together at their residence and had been doing so throughout the night,? according to a Manatee County Sheriff?s Office report.

The couple subsequently quarreled, a deputy reported, ?over Henry refusing to ?cuddle? with Shavonna when they went to bed.? The argument ?turned physical when Shavonna grabbed Henry by the shirt, causing it to tear.? Price then attempted to leave the couple?s Bradenton residence to ?prevent any further argument and Shavonna didn?t want him to leave.?

?At one point during the argument Shavonna had picked up a kitchen knife as if she was going to use it to hurt or stab Henry,? noted investigators, who added that neither party was injured during the confrontation.

Rumph, pictured above, was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and booked into the county jail, from which she was released Sunday.

Florida man allegedly caught on video having sex with roommate's dog

On Friday, a Florida man was arrested at a Palm Bay Papa John's?where he worked as a delivery driver?for allegedly having sex with his roommate's German shepherd.

The roommate became suspicious after she noticed the dog?described to Brevard County police as a "family pet"? showing obvious fear of the roommate's family members and friends. Suspecting her roommate?22-year-old Joshua Lee Werbicki?was to blame, she set up an in-home surveillance system, which eventually recorded one of Webicki's alleged encounters with the dog.

Werbicki is facing one felony charge of animal cruelty and one misdemeanor charge of sex with an animal, according to Florida Today. As of Friday, he was being held on $2,500 bail.

I know y'all love that gif of Bugs sawing off Florida. But ... no! Here's why:

    1. Nobody wants to vacation in extreme South Georgia. Trust me. (Florida's coastline is almost three times the length of the coasts of Ga., N.C. and S.C. combined. The loss of Florida would wipe out a lot of beach.)

    2. Palm trees. I fucking love palm trees.

    3. Florida is a great hurricane buffer for us Georgians.

    4. With Florida gone, Floridians -- and all of their crazy -- would naturally head north. (We don't need anymore Gator fans around here. This is Bulldog country.)

Woman who shot missile in to car has most Florida name EVER..... EVER!

This woman's name is so amazing I had to call the sheriff' s department to confirm.

A Florida woman was arrested in May for shooting a missile into a vehicle. While this already raises some interesting questions (how did someone get access to a missile and why would she waste it on a car instead of selling it to the Russians), what's even more interesting is the woman's name, which appears on her booking record as, well, here's a photo:

While I couldn't get any information on the actual arrest, I had to confirm that the name was real so I put on my reporter hat and started making phone calls. After talking to a worker who wouldn't give me her name at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, I was directed to the*Polk County Sheriff's Office, where I spoke with Sharon (not interested in talking to me) and Linda, tireless public servant. keeper of the records and star of this particular story.

    Here's how our conversation went:

Me: Hi, I'm calling to ask about a name of one of the people you booked and released in May.

    Linda: Not yesterday?

    Me: No, May.

Linda: Okay, what is her name?

    Me: Crystal Metheney.

Linda: Hmmm. And what is your question, sir? (Linda calling me sir was the highlight of my day because usually my high-pitched nasal twang gets a "ma'am" or an "are your parents home?")

Me: Is that her real name? And was she arrested for shooting a missile?

Linda: That's what it says here.

    Me: Not an alias?

    Linda: No.

Me: That's a pretty amazing name.

Linda: (Sighs) Sir, this is Florida. We have a lot of interesting names here.

It's unlikely that we'll ever know more about Metheney ? she was released on a $5000 bond and is hopefully not using her money to buy any more missiles ? but Linda will live on through the ages. In fact, if anyone deserves a sitcom (or a documentary on TRU TV) it's Linda.

Premise from an editor: It will be a new FX sitcom starring Elisabeth Shue as Linda, a small-town florida sheriff trying to keep control of her team of madcap meth-fighting officers. Brilliant!

Rockledge police are investigating a case involving a baby left in a hot, locked car -- apparently for several hours as the father went to work.

The incident was reported to police at about 4:50 p.m. as a black Dodge pickup parked at Barton Plaza at 660 Barton Blvd. Co-workers heard the father screaming as he opened the truck and found the toddler, believed to be about 9-months old, police say.

The baby girl may have been in the closed truck without air for several hours, said Donna Seyferth, spokeswoman for the Rocklefge Police Department.

"It's beyond tragic," Seyferth said. Officers and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the toddler but were unsuccessful. An investigation is ongoing.

How on earth do you leave a baby in a PICKUP? I can understand, sort of, how you can leave one in the backseat of a car, but a pickup?

A lot of trucks have extended cabs with back seats now.

I saw this article on HuffPo yesterday and thought of this thread. It probably deserves its own thread, though.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...ef=mostpopular

A Florida accountant has been accused of confining three women in his home as sex slaves, prostituting them and posting a video of himself raping at least one of the victims.

Gainesville resident Timothy Deegan, 53, was charged with three counts of human trafficking June 6th, the Gainesville Sun reported last week and could face additional charges.

Deegan owns a tax business and a sizable home sporting a fountain and statues of lions near a large driveway.

But inside the house, investigators said they found traps, running cameras and weapons, which Deegan allegedly used to subjugate the three women.
