State to seek death penalty in Hailey Owens case
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -
Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson says he will seek the death penalty against the man accused of kidnapping and killing 10-year old Hailey Owens. Craig Michael wood pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Greene County Circuit Court Friday morning.
Wood has also been charged with sexually assaulting the Springfield fourth grader in February. A Greene County judge ruled in May that prosecutors do have enough evidence to try Wood for the crimes.
Earlier this week, the court reporter involved with the case died of natural causes. Prosecutors say it is not clear if she finished transcripts from Wood's preliminary hearing before she died.

If there was ever a case for the death penalty, this would have to be it. I am opposed to the DP for various reasons, but I can completely understand why people would want this guy put to death - the crime is beyond horrific and the evidence against him is so strong. Poor Hailey.
