Crocodile bit off part of vet's arm

Thought you might be interested in this topic - very clear picture!

POLICE in Taiwan were forced to shoot a crocodile after it bit off the arm of the zoo veterinarian treating it.

Dramatic television footage showed a police officer firing on the animal to wrest the severed limb from its jaws.

Chang Po-yu, 38, from the southern Kaohsiung city's Shou Shan Zoo, was injecting the sick crocodile with anaesthetic when it attacked him.

He was said to be in a stable condition after being rushed to hospital for an emergency operation to reattach his arm, an local official said, although it was not immediately clear whether Chang would recover.

I got it from a news site and they had a graphic picture warning before you open it. I assume it's real.  I would not think your fingers would curl into a fist when your arm gets eaten by a crocodile.  You learn something new every day!

Where was Steve Irwin when you need him?
He could have got that arm out of the crocs mouth without using deadly force.

Ok, maybe I will get smited for this, but is this not what tranquilizer darts are for?  Tranquilize FIRST then administer the meds or whatever?  I have never heard of any wildlife/exotic vet dealing with an alert wild animal unless they were properly restrained or incapacitated so that there would be no relative danger.  RIP Crocy!  Killed for doing what comes natural.

im just guessing... but probably because they needed that ARM ASAP!!! i know tranq's work fairly fast but i dont think that they wanted to take any chances that the croc was gonna chew and swallow that arm (i know they dont really chew - they bite and then start swallowing)
They probably had the tools to kill him and not to tranquilize him.

I meant before the attack.  Any vet worth his salt that I have ever heard of wants a wild animal either properly restrained or tranqed before they work on him.  Killing animals always bothers me, especially when incapacitating the croc before trying to treat him would have seriously decreased the risks of this accident...imo.
