The backpack might mean the mother is a teen (not shocking, I know) who was definitely trying to hide her pregnancy. It is so sad that this kind of thing is still happening even though there are protections in place, Safe-haven laws.

The Sheriff’s Office is concerned for the health and well-being of the mother. This mother may possibly be in need of medical care and other support. We realize there are unforeseen circumstances that can lead to these types of incidents and at this time care for the mother is paramount.

UPDATE: Police Continue to Search for Mother of 'Baby Hope'

WHEATON, IL — The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to ask for the public’s help as authorities try to identify the mother of a baby whose body was found in a backpack along Plamondon Road in Wheaton.

DuPage County Sheriff Chief Anthony Romenalli made the following statement on Thursday afternoon in regards to the ongoing investigation:

Yesterday the Sheriff’s Office provided an important update related to our ongoing death investigation of a new born baby girl who was found along a private drive in unincorporated Wheaton on Monday August 15th.
Today, we have the highest hope we will learn who this baby is and who she belongs to, which is why we’ve decided to name our newborn, Baby Hope. Hope had no choice in what happened to her and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office continues to use every resource at our disposal to determine what occurred.
If you were traveling along Plamondon Road in Unincorporated Wheaton on Sunday Night August 14th, between 9 and 11 p.m., we would like to hear from you.
We also would like to speak with anyone who may know of an expecting mother who appears to have lost their child or may have simply disappeared herself.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the Newborn Infant Protection Act, also known as Safe Haven. This law allows newborn babies to be turned over to personnel at a police station, fire station, or hospital without repercussions. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is a safe haven location.
Sheriff Zaruba is asking our citizens, religious and community leaders, and support groups to help us help Baby Hope by continuing to share and talk about this case.
Please encourage anyone with information to contact the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 407-2400 or text us anonymously at 274637 with the word SHERIFF and your message.

WHEATON – Susan Walker believes the newborn found dead Aug. 15 in a backpack near Wheaton deserves an evening of hope.

Walker is founder of the Wheeling-based nonprofit groupRest in His Arms, which provides Christian funerals and burials for abandoned babies. The group will host An Evening of Hope to remember "Baby Hope," a nickname given by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office during its investigation of the case, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 15 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton.

"We know that the community is grieving," Walker said. "The community is grieving the loss of that child. And for a lot of people, that has stirred up some additional emotions, perhaps their own experience with an infant loss or infertility, or the idea that maybe they wanted to be adoptive parents and that represented a lost opportunity with that baby's passing. So we want to bring some healing to the community. It's to remember Baby Hope, but also it's for anybody who has ever experienced the loss of a child."

An Evening of Hope will include prayer, silent reflection and messages of hope, compassion and understanding. There also will be a chance for people to talk to pastors and grief counselors. Prior to the event, the pastor at St. Michael Catholic Church, Rev. Daniel Hoehn, will offer a Holy Hour of silent prayer from 6 to 7 p.m., ending with a Benediction in the Catholic tradition.

Pastors from nearby churches also are being invited to the event, Walker said. More information is available by going to the event's Facebook page at shawurl.com/2ssj.

Community remembers Baby Hope during An Evening of Hope

WHEATON – As a new mother, Katrina Michaelis said she couldn't imagine someone abandoning their baby on the side of a road, such as what happened when a newborn was found dead Aug. 15 in a backpack near Wheaton.

"I couldn't see anybody wanting to harm their kid like that," said the St. Charles mother, who has a 4-month-old girl, Cassidy.

Michaelis was among those who attended An Evening of Hope on Sept. 15 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheaton to remember "Baby Hope," a nickname given by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office during its investigation of the case.

An Evening Of Hope was for anyone touched by the loss of Baby Hope and for all those grieving their own experience of infant or child loss. The Wheeling-based nonprofit group Rest in His Arms, which provides Christian funerals and burials for abandoned babies, hosted the event.

Burial of Baby Found Abandoned in Wheaton Set For This Week

WHEATON, IL - A baby girl found dead in a backpack on a private drive near Wheaton will be buried on Thursday, authorities said Monday.

Baby Hope, the name authorities gave to the currently unidentified infant, will be buried at St. Michael Cemetery, 1109 Warrenville Road, on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. The plot where the young infant will be laid to rest has been donated by St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wheaton, according to a sheriff's office press release.

Meanwhile, an investigation continues into the death.

The baby was found on Aug. 15 by landscapers on a private drive in the area of the 25W400 block of Plamondon Drive in unincorporated Wheaton. The baby's body was in a black Everest brand backpack. Authorities are still searching for Hope’s mother.

Last Thursday, a non-denominational, multi-faith service hosted by Rest in His Arms, and organized with the help of several local moms, was held at St. Michael’s Church to mourn Baby Hope.

The service was also meant for all those grieving their own experience of infant or child loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, failed adoption, illness or accident or any other similar instances, said Susan Walker, founder of Rest in His Arms.

Newly released DNA evidence may show the likenesses of the parents of "Baby Hope," an infant found dead in August in unincorporated DuPage County near Wheaton.

In a news conference Oct. 20, the DuPage County Sheriff's Office presented computer-generated likenesses created by Parabon NanoLabs, a DNA technology company, with hopes members of the public would come forward with their identity.

"Baby Hope is not only a member of the community, but a member of our family," Sgt. Jeff Christiansen said at the conference. "We believe somebody in the community holds the key to bring closure to Baby Hope. Baby Hope needs her community to share her story and bring her closure so she can rest in peace."

The child was found dead Aug. 15 in a backpack alongside a brown toilet seat cover and rug in the 25W400 block of Plamondon Road. Christiansen described the area as a fairly isolated, privately maintained road with seven residences nearby – suggesting the parents were likely from somewhere in the nearby area.

The baby was buried Sept. 22 at St. Michael Catholic Church's cemetery in Wheaton.

Christiansen said tips had been steadily flowing in regarding the investigation since it was released to the public, but he hoped the images would serve as a catalyst for someone to step forward.

"If you know someone who was pregnant and now does not have her baby, we need to hear from you," he said.

He noted the images of the parents, both believed to be Latino or Hispanic, were "scientific approximations" and may not be exact, including differences caused by lifestyle choices or body hair.

The DNA test also revealed the baby's mother used the drug Lamotrigine, an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder and sleeping disorders. The sergeant said the prescription was a fairly common one.

He also said the office worked with the Wal-Mart corporation, the location the rug and toilet cover were purchased from, to gather leads from purchase history and security tapes, but did not comment further due to an ongoing active death investigation.

Christiansen said many in the department and community had taken the death of Baby Hope to heart and wanted to see the investigation through to the end.

"Most of us are fathers, uncles, and we're very sad to see what happened," Christiansen said.
