Hunt for Rista: missing teen has 'no source of income' July 20, 2009 - SMH

Missing ... Rista Chathavixay. A teenage schoolgirl has been missing from her suburban Sydney home for almost four months, police say. Rista Chathavixay, 16, was last seen by her boyfriend on March 24 at Mount Pritchard, in Sydney's south-west. "At the time [of] her disappearance, Rista failed to attend school and the fast-food restaurant where she worked part-time," police said in a statement. Advertisement: Story continues below "She was reported missing ... by her family after she failed to contact her friends or family for several months." Rista has not accessed her bank accounts and has "no source of income", police said, sparking serious concerns for her welfare. She is described as being of Asian appearance, about 160 centimetres tall, thin, with brown eyes and long black hair. Anyone with information about Rista's whereabouts is urged to contact police.

SWEET SIXTEEN AND MISSING: PLEA TO FIND RISTA

    Arjun Ramachandran - SMH 22 July 2009

Missing ... Rista Chathavixay. Schoolgirl Rista Chathavixay had fallen out with her parents and had been living with her teenage boyfriend just before she went missing, police say. She has not been seen since March 24 in Mount Pritchard, near Liverpool, and police are concerned for her welfare. The 16-year-old has no source of income and has not accessed her bank account, used her mobile phone, contacted family or friends or been to school or work (at a local McDonald's), said David Hatchwell, acting crime manager at Green Valley Police.

"We do have concerns for her wellbeing, she's a young Asian girl ... and [we don't know] whether she's found another boyfriend and being kept by him or whether she's met [with] some foul play," he said. Rista was reported missing by her boyfriend a few days after she broke up with him on March 24 at his Mount Pritchard home, Detective Sergeant Hatchwell

She had been living there with him and his family since last November after a "run in" with her father at their Heckenberg home, he said. The boyfriend reported Rista missing a few days after the break-up, after he did not see her at their school - Ashcroft High - or at nearby hang-outs, he said.

"She was a fairly quiet girl. She used to go to Liverpool shops and Mount Pritchard he said.

"There was no history of disappearance, only that she had a run-in with her dad.

"We have contacted all her known friends and the people she used to hang out with, and also people that the ex boyfriend might know." Rista's ex-boyfriend had been helpful in the investigation and was not considered a suspect, Detective Sergeant Hatchwell said. The pair had argued and Rista had suggested the pair take a break from the relationship, he said. "There were no major dramas. It was a fairly amicable break-up from our investigations.

Prior to her disappearance, Rista had only limited contact with her parents, mainly with her mother, he said. There was an alleged sighting of Rista in the Campbelltown area a few months ago, but this could not be verified, Detective Sergeant Hatchwell said. Rista's manager at Bonnyrigg Heights McDonald's said she was working there only once a week, and had been there for only a few weeks before her disappearance.

Since making Rista's case public earlier this week, police had received no new leads, Detective Sergeant Hatchwell said. Teenage girls frequently went missing from their family homes in the Green Valley area, but Rista's case was of concern because she had not been sighted in a long time, he said.

Gone and Fairfield families left baffled

BY CHRIS BOULOUS - Fairfield City Champion 29/07/2009 5:50:00 AM NOT knowing is like living in darkness. That is the theme for this year's National Missing Persons Week which begins on Sunday, August2. There are approximately 35,000 people reported missing in Australia every year, including 900 people in NSW every month. As the theme suggests, the worst part is not knowing not knowing where they are, not knowing if they're safe. Not knowing if they are alive. That is the situation facing the family of Rista Chathavixay, who was last seen by her ex-boyfriend at his home in Mount Pritchard on March 24 this year. It is believed the pair had an argument about the status of their relationship.

Police are concerned that Rista could have been the victim of foul play, as she has not accessed any of her bank accounts and has no known source of income. She has also failed to attend school and the fast-food restaurant where she worked part-time. ``We have concerns about Rista's welfare and encourage anyone with information to contact the police,'' Green Valley detective Mark Kneipp said. ``We have heard rumours she may be in Campbelltown but we need more help from the community. The family just needs to know they need closure.''

Rista's case is one of several unsolved in NSW, with 80 long-term missing persons reported in the south-west alone. Missing persons unit manager Kelly Kortlepel said National Missing Persons Week was a chance to rekindle the search for long-term missing persons and raise awareness about the growing problem. ``The week is an opportunity to raise awareness of the growing problem of wandering especially for older people who may go missing due to the effects of dementia or memory loss,'' she said. ``Just as sightings from the public helped police locate British backpacker Jamie Neale when he wandered off the track in the Blue Mountains, we hope this week will remind people that our ageing population need us to keep an eye out for them too.'' National Missing Persons Week is from August 2 to 8.

Coronial inquest into missing NSW teenager

POLCE hope a coronial inquest will solve the mystery of a Sydney teenager who went missing three years ago.

An inquest will begin on April 17 into the disappearance of Rista Chanthavixay, who was 15 when last seen at Apex Park in Liverpool on March 24, 2009.

NSW police issued a statement on Thursday appealing for anyone with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

"(Detectives) hold grave concerns for the welfare of Miss Chanthavixay and are hopeful this appeal and subsequent coronial inquest will help provide information about her whereabouts," the statement said.

At the time of her disappearance, she was living with her boyfriend in Mt Pritchard in Sydney's west.

She was expected home that day but failed to arrive.

Ms Chanthavixay is of Asian appearance, 160cm tall, with brown eyes, medium length dark brown hair. She had a slim build at the time of her disappearance.

Anyone who has information about her disappearance or whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police renew appeal to find missing teen – Mt Pritchard By NSW Police Force

Police are renewing their appeal to find a teenage girl who went missing from her home in Sydney’s southwest three years ago.

At the time of her disappearance, the then 15-year-old was living with her boyfriend in Mt Pritchard.

She was due to return to her home the same day but failed to appear.

Police will put the case before the NSW Coroner on Tuesday 17 April this year, following a number of public appeals over the past three years.

They hold grave concerns for the welfare of Miss Chanthavixay and are hopeful this appeal and subsequent coronial inquest will help provide information about her whereabouts.

Rista is of Asian appearance, brown eyes and at the time of her disappearance had a slim build, was 160cm tall, with medium length dark brown hair.

The photo police released today was taken in the week she disappeared.

Busby & Mt Pritchard are very, very close & this kind of stuff is very, very rare here. There were suspicions about her boyfriend at the time, based (I believe) on nothing other than his claim to have left her at a local park at night. I doubt this guy woke up one day in his 75th year & decided to do this for the first time though, so I hope they at least rule him out.

ETA Actually, there's a short but steady list of still missing girls in Sydney's western suburbs since the 1970's - including a girl my age who disappeared a few streets away in Leumeah when we were teens, little Helen Kapidis(?) from Marrickville (both 1980's) & much more recently the toddler who disappeared from her bed - also near Liverpool like Rista. None have ever been found, not in 40 years.

I forgot Katrina Bohnenkamp in 2012. She was from Greenacre - right near Busby & Mt Pritchard, 3 suburbs almost in a row. (Uggh. I always mix up Green Valley & Greenacre - it's not next door but it's still western Sydney & less than 30 mins)

"Get the f*** in the car now": 75yo man charged with kidnap attempt

A 75-year-old man charged with attempting to kidnap a 13-year-old girl as she walked to school and allegedly yelling for her to ‘‘get the f*** in the car now’’ remains in custody.

After the arrest of Frano Baldic of Busby on Friday, Green Valley police said they had discovered a street directory with maps of the area and surrounding suburbs with "numerous" locations circled.

"These areas all depict locations where children’s schools, playgrounds, or sporting fields are located,"
    the document states.

"Police have a very real and immediate concern that the accused is a danger to all children within the community and at an extreme risk of reoffending."

The girl was walking to school in Busby at 8.35am on Wednesday when a man in a white van passed her several times, she told police.

She hid behind a car on Orchard Road and tried to run away, but court documents state the man pulled into a driveway in front of her, leaned over to the open passenger window and yelled, "get the f*** in the car now".

The girl was able to again run away and told police the van passed her once more before she arrived at school unharmed and alerted teachers.

Baldic appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday charged with attempted kidnapping and stalking and intimidation offences.

He did not appear via audio-visual link before the court and his solicitor did not apply for bail.

Details of the incident were not discussed in the court. Bail was formally refused and the matter adjourned to Liverpool Local Court on June 25.

Most of these are the only unsolved underage missing cases in NSW for their year. NSW is slightly bigger than Texas so it seems a little weird these are all 5 - 30 mins drive apart.

The state of the big vanish..

The most simple answer is usually the right one in these cases. So therefore the majority of my suspicion is going to have to rest on the boyfriend / ex boyfriend, especially considering the circumstances. Perhaps it has the slight stench of a gang-related sex trafficking/prostitution thing . . . but obviously that sort of wild speculation is based on literally nothing whatsoever.

Those links to those other unsolved missing persons cases are interesting to the say the least. I've always thought there was strong links and some eerie similarities to a number of the unsolved cases across Australia. And considering the vastness of Australia (and the corruption/incompetence of the police force in missing person cases), I think an intelligent and organised serial killer(s) could potentially operate for a quite a long period of time without ever raising any suspicion, particularly if they are transient and moving across state borders.

Are you aware if there is also any previous unsolved murder cold cases that are connected to any of those areas??

Hmm. Good point. I'll have a dig around - an obvious one would be Wanda Beach, but that was the 60's. A relative of mine went missing from Bargo in 2001& was found murdered at Gerroa the next day (Rachelle Childs - her boss is really the only POI).

There's Reveille Balmain too. She went missing after appearing on the first issue of Marie-Claire magazine. Investigation was slow to start because they thought it was a dodgy publicity stunt.

It's National Missing Person's Week down here right now. Rista was chosen as one of the NSW Police profile cases for south west Sydney.

NSW Police has launched its annual campaign to raise awareness of the problems and effects of missing people.

For National Missing Persons Week, police plan to highlight one missing person each day this week.

Detective Superintendent James Johnson said Green Valley police were appealing for help to find a young woman who had been missing for five years.

Rista Chanthavixay, then 15 years old, was last seen in Mount Pritchard, about 4.15pm on March 24, 2009.

Miss Chanthavixay, who would now be 21, was reported missing after she did not attend school.

Police say that Miss Chanthavixay was spotted by a friend at Campbelltown station a month after her disappearance.

She is believed to have been heading to Melbourne.

Miss Chanthavixay is described as being of Asian appearance, 160 centimetres tall, of slim build, with black hair and brown eyes.

Detective Superintendent Johnson said police would never give up searching and the community's contact with police would save a lot of anguish.

"People go missing for a number of reasons," he said.

"These could relate to health-related issues or disputes within the family.

"There are some people who choose to distance themselves from family due to other reasons which we will never know — but in all circumstances I urge any missing person to at least make contact with their local police to let us know that they are safe and well."

National Missing Persons Week runs until Saturday, August 9.

Anyone who knows of Rista Chanthavixay's whereabouts or who has information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
