Search warrants detail history of abuse against Erica Parsons

(Aug. 16, 2013) A day after authorities searched the home of missing teen Erica Parsons, search warrants reveal a history of abuse by her adoptive parents, Sandy and Casey Parsons.

Erica, 15, who disappeared nearly two years ago, was reported missing July 30 by the Parsonses' son, James.

In warrants filed Thursday, investigators with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office say Sandy and Casey Parsons are said to have "routinely abused Erica both mentally and physically."

The warrants list the items officers seized from the Parsonses' home ? including pants, a section of drywall, baseboards and carpet that may be stained with blood and two large knives wrapped in plastic.

Investigators also found a collection of magazines about JonBenet Ramsey, a Colorado child murdered in her parents' home in 1996. That crime has never been solved.

Investigators with the sheriff's office, SBI and the FBI served the search warrants Wednesday around 10:15 a.m. on the Miller Chapel Road home. They searched the home's interior, the backyard, an enclosed garage apartment and the couple's Dodge minivan.

The search continued well into the night, with investigators even moving an above-ground pool and digging in the backyard.

    FBI Questions Husband

On Thursday, the FBI questioned Casey Parsons' husband, Sandy, for nearly five hours at the office of the couple's lawyer, Carlyle Sherrill.

Sandy quickly left the office without comment around 1:30 p.m. after the interview. Sherrill spoke with members of the news media a few minutes later.

The attorney said Casey Parsons is a patient at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, taken there Wednesday for emergency surgery related to stomach and colon issues. She went to the hospital sometime before investigators finished the Wednesday search of the house.

Sherrill said he wasn't sure if stress triggered Casey Parson' need to be hospitalized, but she was in surgery and her husband would be heading to the hospital to "be by her side."

Hospital officials did not release information about Casey Parsons' condition.

Sherrill said he doesn't put trust in the allegations of abuse found in the warrants.

Investigators with the SBI and the Rowan County Sheriff's Office said in court documents that family members of Casey Parsons told them "she couldn't tolerate her and she does not claim Erica as her daughter."

The warrants describe a troubled childhood and home for Erica. Family members told investigators they often saw bruises on her that the adoptive parents said were caused by other children.

The Parsonses adopted Erica when she was 2 years old. The teen's biological mother, Carolyn Parsons, was married to Sandy Parsons' brother.
    Relatives Share Info

The family members cited in the warrants, who are not named, said "Erica was small for her age and rarely interacted with family or extended family," and that she was often harshly disciplined by Casey Parsons.

"Family members stated another child in the home told this family member that Casey took a toy gun and broke it while hitting Erica with the toy," the warrants say.

At one point, a family member told investigators, Casey Parsons sent Erica to live with someone else, the warrants say.

"One witness said they took custody of Erica for about eight months after Casey contacted them and said she could not stand to look at Erica. This witness said Casey had brought Erica to their house. They said Erica had bruises on her bottom and Casey said she lost control and beat Erica.

"This witness said that after about eight months, Casey resumed custody of Erica and she was afraid DSS would find out she did not have her and was still getting money for her."

The family member said while staying with them, Erica told them that Sandy and Casey hit her, the warrant says.

A family member said Casey told them she could not stand to look at Erica because the girl "reminds her of Carolyn and she hates Carolyn," the warrants say.

    How It Unfolded

James Parsons reported Erica missing after he was kicked out of the house. Casey Parsons has said she and her husband asked James to leave after he physically assaulted her and pushed his younger brother against a hallway door.

James Parsons said he woke up and realized that Erica wasn't in the house. He asked his parents where the girl was, and they told him they had taken her to Asheville live with Erica's grandmother.

The Parsonses told investigators Erica went to live with her biological grandmother, Irene "Nan" Goodman, in Asheville.

Authorities have not been able to verify that claim. The warrants say the Parsonses told investigators they took another daughter with them when they dropped off Erica, but the daughter, Brook, told investigators in a separate interview that she did not go on that trip.

Also, investigators say Casey Parsons told them she had been contacted by the grandmother through Facebook, but she was unable to provide any proof.

The warrants also say bank records show the Parsonses continued to cash support payments for Erica's care after the girl had left the home. The couple told reporters last week they continued to take the payments because Erica's health insurance was tied to the payments.

Investigators say the couple's fear of authorities finding out about the payments led to a delay in reporting Erica as "missing in a timely or reasonable time frame."

One neighbor said she had never seen Erica since the family moved into the home in April 2011. Erica was home schooled and according to Sandy, his wife liked to keep the children at home and safe.

The search warrants detail a number of items that were seized from the property, including a desktop computer, laptops, cell phones, bank account information, digital cameras, a diary, photographs, an envelope labeled "Erica Theeth?" on it, letters and other papers.

On Monday, the couple and Sherrill had taped a segment for the "Dr. Phil" show. The episode is not expected to run this week.

Super-long story, so click the link if you want to read the whole thing.

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...nd-no-one.html

(Aug. 20, 2013) SALISBURY In recent days ? and perhaps for the first time in her life ? someone outside her family is paying attention to Erica Parsons.

In 2011, her adoptive parents claim she went to live with her grandmother. Nobody has heard from her since.

Relatives who found Erica's absence odd never bothered to alert authorities.

No favorite teacher intervened because Erica was home-schooled.

No Facebook friend grew suspicious because Erica, at times reclusive, didn't have an account.

None of the government agencies that could have acted in the child's behalf appears to have broken any rules. Erica shows up as a name on an adoption decree. She turns up again on a long-ago child-abuse complaint that closed with no charges being filed.

In a widely distributed photograph from 2010, Erica stands before a family Christmas tree, her expression blank.

But now, six months shy of what would be her 16th birthday, Erica has become the subject of a widening hunt by Rowan County, the state and the FBI. Her story has dominated TV news and is about to debut on a nationwide talk show.

Foul play is suspected. No charges have been filed.

Investigators say the child's adoptive parents, Casey and Sandy Parsons, aren't cooperating.

They have been called to court to face an allegation that a juvenile in their care has been abused or neglected. It's unclear whether that charge involves Erica, whom the Parsons say they dropped off in Asheville around Christmas 2011 to live with her biological grandmother, Irene Goodman.

But according to search warrants in the case, the Parsons weren't able to provide contact information for Goodman. An Observer search of public records found no Irene Goodman within 50 miles of Asheville.

Erica?s biological mother says on her Facebook page that Erica "has no family in Asheville."

Casey and Sandy Parsons' attorney, Carlyle Sherrill of Salisbury, said Saturday that the couple's court date on the abuse allegation has not been set. He said their other minor-aged children have been placed with Casey's mother.

Meanwhile the swirl surrounding Erica's disappearance continues to grow. For much of her life, the child's world appears to have been a narrow and private one. Small for her age and quiet, she was born to a mother who couldn't support her and a father with a long criminal record.

By age 2, she had been adopted into another side of her fractured family. A short time later she went to live with another relative after Casey, her new mom, told family members she "couldn't stand to look" at the child, according to search warrants in the case.

After eight months Erica was taken back by Casey and Sandy Parsons only because they were afraid of losing the state check they received each month for Erica, the warrants say. Those payments ? which would be at least $634 a month for a child Erica's age ? are reserved for adoptive parents of special needs children.

The parents kept collecting the check, even after their daughter no longer lived with them, because they expected Erica to come home "at anytime," their lawyer says. In doing so, investigators say, the Parsons may have committed a crime.

Once Erica was reported missing, her relatives stepped forward to describe the Parsons' household as violent and abusive. They say the child often displayed bruises and lumps that Casey blamed on Erica's siblings, warrants say. Family members have since told investigators that Casey beat her daughter regularly.

Late last month, perhaps due to a family dispute, Erica's stepbrother James filed a missing person's report.

During a search of the home Wednesday, investigators took pieces of wall and flooring they believe could contain blood stains and collected two knives wrapped in shrink wrap.

They also seized books and magazines about JonBenet Ramsey, a child beauty queen found murdered in her Colorado home in 1996.

This week, much of the country will have the chance to catch up with Erica's case.

The syndicated TV show "Dr. Phil" will spend its Tuesday and Wednesday episodes on her disappearance.

The title: "Missing or Murdered: Where Is 15-Year-Old Erica?"

According to the advance publicity, Dr. Phil will be interviewing her adoptive parents.

    All in the family

Erica was born Feb. 24, 1998, "a happy baby," says Crystal Owensby, who was being raised by Erica's biological mother, Carolyn Parsons.

Owensby, 25, says Carolyn didn't have the money to keep Erica, but was never at peace about giving her up. Now, with Erica missing, she's heartbroken about the decision.

"It bothered her every day," Owensby said. "She feels maybe if she had kept her, this would've never happened. She blames herself."

On her Facebook page, Carolyn Parsons wrote: "I nor her dad have no clue where she is and we love her and want to find her and know she is safe."

Carolyn Parsons did not return Observer phone calls for comment. She had been married to Sandy Parsons' brother, and records show that Casey and Sandy took custody of Erica a few months shy of her second birthday.

Mecklenburg County Superior Court Judge Lisa Bell says adoption placements within the same family normally take less time and often are seen as being in the best interests of the child.

Cabarrus County approved Erica's adoption on March 23, 2000, finding that Casey and Sandy Parsons were "fit to have the care and custody of said child."

That designation took place despite Sandy's two convictions in the 1990s for assaulting Casey. According to court records, the second incident took place in 1997, two years before the couple took custody of Erica.

A spokeswoman for Cabarrus County Department of Social Services said officials cannot discuss the specifics of Erica's case because adoption records are legally sealed.

I want deep down in my heart to think that some real parents stole her away from the hell she was living in and now raises her as their own, in a world far removed from the one she knew at the Parsons'.

There are times when I want to forego the whole Bill of Rights and just shake the shit out of someone to get them to talk. They know what happened to her. If they didn't, we'd have heard her name on news reports two years ago, because that's what responsible fucking parents do. Both Casey and Sandy Parsons need to be dragged through the neighborhood behind a truck on fire until they agree to tell the fucking truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Some people don't approve of that, I don't rightly give a shit. We have a responsibility when we care for children, to do what is in their best interest, sometimes foregoing our own in order that the kids get what they need to grow into self sufficient, amazing, productive, happy adults. We sacrifice for them because that's what you do when you love someone.

Fuck these subhuman pieces of shit. Cut their limbs off until they start to talk.

This probably wasn't the thread to read before bed.
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

This is honestly the worst. That poor girl. I can't believe these two have the balls to go on Dr Phil and just act like they couldn't give a flying fuck. Their alibi is awful: the mom got emailed by someone on Facebook claiming to be her grandmother and just left her in a McDonalds to get picked up by a total stranger? I mean what the fuck. And the Jon Benet shit? weird.

That poor little girl. A short life of misery. Such a sad sad face with eyes that reflect a lack of hope.
By an accident of birth any of us could have had the misfortune of being born into such horrible circumstances.

    Update about Dr Phil's discoveries:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...polygraph.html

A polygraph test carried out on the adoptive father of a 13-year-old girl reported missing was found to be 'strongly deceptive' when he described how he had nothing to do with her disappearance.
I find it weird that these people even continue with public appearances. Every word out of their mouths seems horribly illadvised.

Today's was part 1 for me...I guess (I didn't see the end of today's because I was cooking but had my boyfriend DVR it) so if they've drawn the lie detector results out into another episode and you get it...let me know!

Aahh thank you. Was posting at the same time. I'm surprised they went at ALL! If there was any suspicion on me about anything, the last place I'd wanna go was to spend quality time with Dr. Phil. Come to think of it, even if there weren't...but the fact she said her pain was a 9 out of 10 the day of the test?

They said she could go home, take her pain meds, then take the test the next day. She still refused. If her pain was that bad why wouldn't she have her meds with her? I'm actually surprised she made up the whole "Nan" thing and didn't blame the murder on her son.

It makes no sense. The police have confirmed that the woman she claims she was talking to has been dead for five years. Which means if there is a grain of truth to her story, she handed that girl off to someone PRETENDING to be the grandma. Wouldn't that concern you? They're doing a horrible job of seeming innocent in my eyes. And then they say the son is just crazy and hates them...but also justify not taking the girl back because she called the mom a bitch. Like, wtf. They're just trying to paint their kids as villains. You raise a kid until thirteen and then get one phone call about her whereabouts and never bother to call again? These people are amazing.

I wanna know WHOSE mother she supposedly is. Did they say that? Because the bio parents are closely related to the adoptive parents. NO ONE else in the family knows who this Nan is? It's some woman PRETENDING to be Nan who died 5 years ago, is that the story?

I don't even think they (Erica's adoptive parents) know whose mother Nan supposedly is. They are pretty much pulling a Casey Anthony and making shit up. The mom didnt even say she met the lady who she turned her daughter over to. She just dropped her off at McDonald's, then Nan supposedly picked her up there.

"Nan's" real name matches the maternal grandmother, but died five years ago. They're just making shit up, and it's not a very good series of lies.

WARRANT: Teeth, hammer, video found during new search in missing teen case

(Updated Aug. 22, 2013) SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - Investigators in Rowan County have release another set of search warrants in the case of a missing Salisbury teen, who was reported missing nearly two years after she was last seen.

On Wednesday investigators searched a red wooden storage building at a home along the 200-block of Sutton Road in China Grove.

The building is described as a "small, red colored one-story wood-frame structure with a shingled roof" behind the home. It has a single-door in the front, the search warrant states.

WBTV has learned that the storage building belongs to Erica's adoptive father, Sandy Parsons.

Rowan County tax show the home and property have been owned by William and Janet Parsons, Sandy Parsons' parents, since 1995.

According to the warrants, investigators seized a video tape, pieces of a vacuum cleaner, teeth, a hammer and school records.

This is the second property search that investigators have done since Erica was reported missing.

A search was done on August 16 along the 200-block of Miller Chapel Road, the home of Erica's adoptive parents Casey and Sandy Parsons.

During that search, investigators logged information about 68 items that they removed from the house.

That list includes a "plastic bag with JonBenet Ramsey magazines" and a "JonBenet book with notes inside about remodeling house."

The warrant says there was drywall cut and removed from a closet area with red stains. The section was tested for blood, the warrant states. Investigators also took baseboards from the closet with red stains.

The second set of warrants, which was released on Wednesday evening, references the initial search that was done.

"During that search, investigators failed to located any evidence of Erica Parsons still living here or any evidence that her room or personal living area still remained in the home," the warrant stated.

Investigators say the evidence in the home indicated that Casey and Sandy Parsons knew Erica would not be returning home.

In addition to finding photos and books about the death of JonBenet Ramsey inside the Parsons home, the new warrant states that investigators also found material on the "South Carolina Susan Smith case."

On Wednesday, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office announced a $15,000 reward for information in Erica's disappearance. The Sheriff's Office offered $10,000 and was joined by talk-show host Dr. Phil - who offered a $5,000 after Casey and Sandy Parsons appeared on his show on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Erica is believed to be just over four-feet tall and is known to be small for her age. She had brown hair and brown eyes with fair skin. Casey and Sandy Parsons have insisted Erica's biological grandmother Irene Goodman is with their daughter. WBTV discovered Erica had a biological grandmother Goodman, but her name was Cloie Goodman and she died in 2005.

This is the most half-assed story, but it's even sadder that two years passed and no one realized this girl was gone.
