At the time I had a baby with no epidural, I didn't have a choice. I got induced and they expected it to take twelve hours. It took 2. The baby was also a lot bigger than they expected (she was 9 lbs 5 oz). Having given birth both ways, I recommend without the drugs. Once the contractions and the delivery is over, the relief is astounding. There is no wait to get up, go pee, or eat. The baby wasn't groggy from drugs and the delivery wasn't slowed from the epidural. All in all what I thought would be an absolutely awful experience when I was refused drugs, turned into a totally awesome one.

I think it's pretty specific to the individual.  There are not enough drugs in the world for me to do it twice.  I have never forgotten the pain as the drugs had no effect whatsoever.  Charming I know.  The damage to my lower back was just a bonus  :|
